Owner Bruno is very kind and welcoming. I used to live around the corner from Rolling Out and studied for the Bar Exam at the cafe. Even though I now live farther away, I still make it a point to visit regularly. The Hawaiian sticky buns are a household favorite, but all the pastries are amazing. Everything is very reasonably priced. Update: Bruno made me a black sesame cheesecake for my birthday (pre-ordered). It is soooo good. I can't stop raving about it. I will definitely go to Rolling Out for all my cakes from now on.
Simply put, the mochissant is a work of art. The comforting delight of mochi with the delicate, buttery joy of a croissant. If these were sold in the Ferry Building, they’d go for $10 and be sold out in 30 minutes. Here on Taraval, they’re a little over three bucks so, yes, I’d like to buy them all, thank you.
This bakery is amazing. The tag line is "baked with love and creativity" and it is totally accurate. This is one of those San Francisco hidden treasures. Why it isn't in every tour guide as a must go to stop I have no idea. The black sesame croissant and veggie quiche were insanely good. Run, don't walk, to Rolling Out.
These were amazing! I got one of everything Asian and pre ordering was really easy. It’s one baker and he responded super fast! He was also really nice and asked me about my day and gave me recommendations on how to reheat the pork kouign amann. I picked up even more once I got there because everything looked so good! Would be a good place to study too as it’s chill and quiet. The mango kouign amann was my favorite. His croissants are very flakey and delicious! And the egg tarts are yummy too! I think this is my new go-to spot for delicious treats!
There are only a few bakeries where originality, creativity, and good food come together. Rolling-Out Cafe is one of these few. After my 1st visit several years ago when my friend told me about it, I've gone back many times. My most favorites are the egg tarts and the quiche. Their quiche is the best I've tasted so far. The mini egg tarts have just the right sweetness; and are perfect for enjoying alone or for sharing. Sometimes if I go late during the date, I might be able to find one or two left if I'm lucky. I'm so glad there are more flavors now--original, cream cheese, sweet potato, chocolate, & bacon. And they are all delicious. Other food are also good, like the sausage roll, croissants, star-shaped donut (kids would love this), etc. The rosemary mac and cheese is definitely recommended too. It's made to order, and when it's baked, the aroma fills the whole cafe. During my recent visits, I was happy to find that they have a holiday special--a more sophisticated version of the traditional sweet potato pie. It's made with rum, and can be made as smaller individual pies if ordered in advance. I brought them to a party, and whoever tried it just loved it. Thank you for making such good food available for people to enjoy!
This is a very delightful place to go. Since Taraval Street was closed for construction all the surrounding business has suffered and the neighbors should support local businesses. Right now the road improvements in the area are done and you can park confortable at the door now. They sell one of the best croissants and pastries at reasonable prices. Come and check them out
TLDR: Bruno is such a great local business owner to support, he has a few items that literally no one else has and all the pastries are delicious He owns the copyright for mochi-ssant which are awesome and has a few flavors including lychee, strawberry and more. He also has a different type of Portuguese egg tart where the crust is a bit crispier than most but very good. He also has mochi biscuit as well and some regulars like chocolate croissant, cinnamon rolls, etc
Rolling Out Cafe isn't your ordinary corner cafe on Taraval but a creative bakery and keeps me coming back for its interesting pastries. Featuring Asian flavors such as matcha, black sesame, Thai tea, ube, Rolling Out Cafe combines the subtle sweetness of Asian treats and the delicate texture of croissant and egg tart into something really fun for the tastebud. Try their Thai tea mochissant, or mango sticky rice kouign amann, or ube egg tart, or even just the goat cheese croissant. I also like the "mini" size of their pastries so I can really enjoy my guilty pleasures. There are plenty of other items on the menu but the lovely pastries are all that I have had so far. The owner is genuine and down-to-earth, always offering friendly and no-frills service.
The black sesame croissant was CRISPY. I was surprised it didn't need to be warmed up. Then I realized that this was simply the delight of eating a truly fresh baked pastry. Not soggy at all. And not too sweet. I could see and taste real sesame seeds! 😋 I meant to save half of each pastry for my partner, but I couldn't help but finish the whole croissant that I started snacking on. Oh well, time to attempt put away the rest of them out of sight, so that I'm able to save at least some until he gets home.
Everything I’ve tried here has been exceptional. Particularly love the strawberry mochissant. The owner Bruno is a lovely guy too!
Love this place. Excellent craftsmanship, run by genuinely awesome people. I've never had a croissant quite like this, hard recommend!
Stopped by after getting some tacos down the street. Got the black sesame croissant and Hawaiian sticky bun. So good that we had to come back the next morning when they weren't sold out of half their pastries. The owner, Bruno, remembered us from the day before and thanked us for coming back. Definitely worth walking in the rain from our hotel. Got six other pastries and they were all good. A must try.
My coworkers brought me here and I am obsessed. It is fantastic! My favorite is the goat cheese croissant and the mango sticky rice kouign amann. I also tried the mochissant (reg and strawberry), mochuscuit, Portuguese egg tart, and classic cinnamon roll (with my coworkers of course). Highly recommend and excited to add this spot for for mid morning snack.
I had the most delicious croissant stuffed with ham and cheese and a little bit of spice here! The croissant was so light and flaky, it melted in my mouth. I can’t wait to go back! The Vietnamese coffee was bold and flavorful.
Omgodzilla! This place is fantastic! The tomato, mozzarella quiche... to die for. The mango sticky rice kouign Amann was so good, I would contemplate breaking the law for it. The egg tart, well, we are coming back tomorrow for more. Do NOT miss a change to stop here. Bruno is the best chef I've had the pleasure to meet in some time. He is very very sweet. OK, I felt the need to add to this review. I asked Bruno to make me a tomato/ mozzarella quiche and he did. He then froze it, wrapped it in plastic and held it for me to the day before I traveled back to Montana. I packed it in my checked luggage. It made it back to Montana in perfect condition. Nuke a slice for 1 minute, then toaster oven on 450 for 8 minutes. PERFECT! Like it just came out of Bruno's oven. The fact that he did this for me says he cares about his customers! Not to mention the fact that I drove by his business at 8pm and saw him in there cooking. He works very long hours to make the tastiest yummies for you. You won't be disappointed. Oh, the Vietnamese iced coffee packs a wallop!
Rolling out bakery is the absolute best. Pastries are the best. Favorite is the mango sticky rice Kouign-amann and the Hawaiian bun!
I saw the owner absolutely grinding and prepping at 8pm on Monday night and that level of dedication was the signal that it was going to be good. Went back the following morning to try the Mango Rice Sticky rice Croissant… incredible. The flakiness, not too sweet, texture. Must try if you’re into pastries.
Love this place! They have delicious baked goods, Vietnamese coffee, and their chicken pot pies are the very best I've tasted. Try and stop by before noon, though as they sell out quickly in the morning.
The baked goods made here are exceptional. If you are looking for a breakfast spot in San Diego or just a place to get a delicious dessert or treat, Rolling Out is the place! Their chocolate mochissant and the apple lychee croissants were amazing!
The apple lichi croissant has real apple slides and reall lichi in it ( instead of apple jelly and lichi flavor, etc) . The black sesame croissant is also great. Not too sweet. Best croissant I ever had.
Absolutely DELICIOUS freshly made pastries and treats! The owner and the staff are super friendly 💕 we got the ham&cheese, black sesame, goat cheese and chocolate croissants and they are so flaky, buttery and fresh out the oven!
The owner (I believe he is) is very friendly. We got Ube tart, Mango sticky rice kouing amann and mochi croissant. Everything was soooo good 🤤🤤
Just went with my coworkers and bought a couple of pastries. Delicious to say the least. Everything we tried did not disappoint. We had a couple other coworkers try a piece and everyone loved it. Will be coming back tomorrow!!!
Best apple lychee croissants not too sweet and Mango sticky rice kouign aman on Saturdays so yummy. Miss his pastries in the bay area!
Pastries are great - got the ham and cheese croissant (wonderful), mango sticky rice and chocolate croissant Vietnamese Coffee is strong and delicious friendly service
The egg tart and mochissant were absolutely amazing. This place smells like heaven when you walk in. I can’t wait to come back to try more pastries and bread.
INCREDIBLE! Bruno is an out-of-this-world talent! 3 thoughts go through my mind when I’m eating these pastries that food has never inspired: 1) This should be way more expensive; 2) I need to go back and change all my other 5-star Google reviews to be 3 stars because this is truly 5 stars; 3) This pastry makes me believe in the divine. I was in SD for a convention and stumbled upon this bakery on my first day, and came back many more times. Everything is amazing, but some standouts for me: Mango sticky rice kouign amann, apple lychee croissant, corn zucchini quiche. He also makes delectable sausage rolls with homemade sausage!
Wow, wow, wow! Literally the BEST croissants we have ever had! One of our most memorable meals for our trip to San Diego! The croissants were flaky, melted in your mouth, warm. It tasted as if they could’ve been from France. They had a variety of savory and sweet croissants. We loved the classic butter croissant, goat cheese croissant, and the chocolate croissant. The owner was so kind! It was so good we went back twice!
This place just relocated from the Bay Area and we heard about it from a friend. It's located in downtown on the corner of 1st and G street. There's only street parking and there's no indoor seating. It's just a pick up and go bakery. The staff was very friendly and answered all our questions. We got there around 10am on Saturday and half of the baked goods were already gone. We bought almost one of everything and pretty much loved almost all of them. Compared to other Asian inspired bakeries nearby, these baked goods are far superior in taste and quality. The croissant is flaky, buttery, with plenty of filling. The mochissaint actually has a mochi center! The kouign amann had a mild mango flavor with actually bits of sticky rice in it. The ham and cheese croissant could use a bit more ham and cheese though. For the price, we definitely recommend this bakery!
Really unique bakery items. We want to go back and try other things we didn’t try yet. I had the blueberry mochissant. Crispy on the outside, super soft inside. Not overly sweet. Also had a mango Kouign-amann. Just all very nice. Will definitely go back when in the area again.
One of my friends who lives downtown recommended this bakery, and I was drawn in by the Asian menu and reasonable prices, so I took the first opportunity I got to try it. I am so glad I did! I was so pleasantly surprised by the large variety of items which is impressive for soft opening. I had a hard time deciding and picked a large variety of items to try. Favorites: -mango sticky rice kouign amann: we loved the sweet and tart mango flavor and the actual pieces of glutinous rice in it. -chocolate and strawberry mochissants: the mochi stuffing inside makes sense and provides enough texture difference between the crispy buttery croissant which makes for a pleasant experience -black sesame croissant: there is so much black sesame filling in it and the croissant is so buttery and tasty -ham and cheese croissant: I thought it had a good amount of ham and love that the ham and cheese are baked into the croissant rather than stuffed after baking Needs improvement: Ube egg tart tasted like a plain egg tart. Overall, everything looks sweet, but actually they’re not too sweet at all and are perfect for Asian palate. That’s the best Asian compliment that not too sweet— meaning you can enjoy the underlying natural flavors. Can’t wait to go back and get more pastries! What an amazing bakery to come to San Diego
The owner is awesome. The employees are so friendly. They don't usually make the pop pie early in the morning but he made me one before I headed into work. I'm telling you. One of the best chicken pop pies I had. It was so delicious. Definitely going back. A Must try.
Wow ! Welcome to downtown! Really enthusiastic and talented owners/bakers. Flakey French pastries made with standard faves as well as unique Asian flavors. Loves the egg tarts and the black sesame croissant It’s a counter-serve place with tables and chairs outside.
Mango & Sticky Rice Kouign Amann is delicious omg, so is the goat cheese croissant if you’re up for something more savory. I got to try both in San Diego, place was recommended by my students in the sunset district. ♥️
Super friendly and super delicious! Walked in and was immediately helped and told about the different kinds of mochissants (mochi filled croissants!) and handed a cinnamon roll sample that was a full sized warm, gooey delicious roll. I got a strawberry mochissant, an egg tart and an Uber tart. Everything was crispy pastry and buttery and sweet and just decadent. Very yummy
I ate a breakfast sandwich here that I swear to god extended my lifespan by 5 years. The baked goods that are made at this place are nothing more than a gift of life itself. I want nothing more in life than to start my day at this bakery and be enlightened with incredible food.
It smelt glorious walking in and the breakfast sandwich I got truly lived up to the expectation. I love to support an independent shop and the service from the one man show was awesome. Would go back next time I visit SD!
Wow! The mochissant is insanely moist and flaky at the same time, buttery goodness. The breakfast sandwhich was devine, some of the most airy soft bread.

Friendly service, strong coffee and a delicious selection of pastries. I am so happy to have discovered a new favorite bakery in my neighborhood. The pastries are chewy, flaky, and buttery. What more could you ask for? I highly recommend the black sesame croissant!
My wife and I stumbled upon Rolling-Out after strolling through the Lunar New Year Celebration, been craving Mochi! This bakery offers a selection of unique pastries, like a Key Lime Pie Egg Tart (I could have eaten 10) and a delicious Black Sesame Croissant, WOW! They will blow your mind with flavor and texture. The classic Mochi-ssant is a must-try, chewy on the inside, flaky on the outside. Perfection. I would have left photos but we ate it all already...
Tried the coffee mochissant, and the texture was chewy and not too sweet (which I mean as a high compliment). Folks behind the counter were welcoming, kind, and professional. Location is perfect around lots of other things to do. Give the fusion a try!
This bakery has some of the most unique items I've ever seen and some classics. The owner is super friendly and is putting out some seriously delicious baked goods. My favorites so far that I've tried are: 1) Mochissants - both the chocolate and strawberry are great. Such a unique and delicious version of the classic croissant 2) Portuguese Egg Tarts - these are like the ones I've had in Lisbon but 10x better...they've got an egg custard filling that has such an explosion of french toast flavor. All in a perfectly baked and tasty shell. 10 out of 10 3) Quiche - amazing flavor, vegetable combinations, and just overall delicious This is a must try spot here in downtown!
Everything I've had here has been absolutely delicious! The chocolate Mochissant and the Apple croissant are among my favorites. I try something new every time and have always been delighted. So happy this business opened, it's been a great addition to the area. The owner is kind and friendly, you can really feel their passion is in this place.

Cashier was friendly and helpful, and grabbed me the best pastries out. Inside atmosphere felt a bit industrial, but there was ample outdoor seating.
Storefront was cute and welcoming. The manager was very sweet and threw in a free Mochissant for us since we were visiting; we tried chocolate, original, and strawberry. The flavor was light and none of them were too sweet. Strawberry one was reminiscent of a strawberry wafer or strawberry pocky. Recommend going in the morning when they are fresh and warm :)
This bakery has recently rolled into downtown San Diego. I came in for some croissants but they were already out of the ones I wanted so I settled for a slice of zucchini and corn quiche for $7. I found the corn inside the quiche to be interesting but it worked. Both the zucchini and corn were abundant in the quiche and tasty. My favorite part of the quiche was the pastry crust. It had that great texture and flavor. The egg portion was well seasoned and baked. They offer a variety of pastries and baked goods, including a mix of croissants, cinnamon rolls, sausage rolls, sticky rolls, biscuits, and much more. They also offer breakfast sandwiches. There is some outside seating, but none inside as of yet. The service was welcoming and friendly.

We visited after seeing the recent online news article that featured Rolling Out. It’s definitely true that this little cafe has some inventive bakes! But, we found the ambiance to be really lacking. It didn’t feel like the space had been designed with any intention at all as a space to hang out. Nothing matched, and everything was pretty run down. The pastries were pretty ok - I loved the combination of the lychee and apple together in a croissant - it was kind of like an apple turnover that wasn’t too sweet, which I liked a lot. But while it was buttery, it wasn’t very crispy like some croissants. The black sesame croissant I really struggled with - it didn’t have much flavor at all, and the texture of the sesame filling was kind of pasty. I think it’s probably better to visit in the early morning before the really popular stuff sells out. While it may be an interesting stop if you’re in the neighborhood, I wouldn’t go out of my way again to stop by.
I first read about mochissants when this bakery was located in SF so I was pleasantly surprised to find they moved to SD. Unfortunately, I was pretty underwhelmed with the items I tried. Black Sesame Croissant - nice flakey croissant, but I thought the black sesame filling needed more sweetness. It almost came off savory to me. Mango & Sticky Rice Kouign Amann - nice flakey pastry, but I don't feel like the filling added much to the kouign amann. It didn't taste very strongly if mango Mochiscuit (Mochi Biscuit) - nothing special Strawbery Mochissant - again, good pastry but the strawberry flavor tasted artificial and the mochi wasn't very discernable in the croissant Overall, I am glad I was able to try the pastries but I don't feel the need to go back.
