The Pig and Whistle, San Francisco - A Delightful British Experience If you're seeking a taste of Britain in San Francisco, look no further than The Pig and Whistle. The food here is delightful, offering a true taste of British fare that will make you feel like you've crossed the Atlantic. From classic fish and chips to hearty shepherd's pie, every dish is prepared with care and authenticity. The atmosphere is as authentic as it gets outside of the UK. The cozy, pub-like environment is perfect for unwinding after a long day. There's usually a good game on to watch, adding to the lively and welcoming vibe. A special mention must go to the restrooms – they are impeccably clean, which is always a good thing and often a rarity in busy pubs. Bartender Steve is an absolute gem. Charming and helpful, he goes out of his way to ensure you have a great time. His recommendations are spot-on, and his friendly demeanor adds to the overall fantastic experience at The Pig and Whistle. Whether you're a local or just visiting, this pub is a must-visit for anyone craving a genuine British pub experience.
Not sure if I should give a dive bar a 5 star as it is a dive bar so I’ll give it 5 stars as it is a great dicey bar. The drinks are delish, plenty of screens to watch the game on the tele, your basic bar food. The place was lively even in the middle of the day and the bar keep was friendly enough. Cheers to The Pig and Whistle!
I love this place. It’s a little gem. It’s out in the windswept gray corridor of Geary, but it’s warm and cozy and fun on the inside. Steve’s the owner and he works the bar and serves the food. Great guy. Talkative with a good sense of humor. There’s some regulars that are a really diverse group of folks. All of the staff are cool. I’ve had some great conversations there. The fish and chips is amazing. They make their own. It’s real cod. They have appetizers, and small bites, and main courses. And it’s very affordable. They got all the popular beers and IPAs and hazys and you name it plus several traditional British beverages.
I was taking the long way back from Saragosa and did a flip flop on Geary blvd so I could see my old pal'et from my stompin days, Ol Hybiscuss Trotterdale. She's got a speakeasy there on Geary, so I thought I'd pop in for a pop and spotted The Pig and Whistle right up the street...how convenient, I can grab a quick dinner too. Ol Hybiscuss wasn't in, so I went straight to the Pig and Whistle, I went in for fish and chips but when I saw the beef pie on another table, that was it for me. It was spectacular! ☆☆☆☆☆
The best Fish and Chips in town. Lightly battered, large portions. Excellent service. Great Beer on tap. Cool vibe. Hidden Gem
Just moved into the neighborhood. Was warmly welcomed by the regulars in the corner as well as the owner. Bartender Seamus (sorry for the spelling)took care of not just us but the packed bar. Definitely coming back here again. Gotta try their weekend food specials. Bangers and Mash!! *They now offer Gift Cards Online... definitely a great idea if you want to get your friend, student a gift card they will use....be it liquor or food... either way it's good money spent here
Great Place to hang with friends and get some grub and brew!
Great neighborhood bar with a very good menu and great specials all the time. The staff are really awesome too.
Great place!! Good Irish coffee, amazing fish& chips…good verity of alcohol, nice music that still allows you to hear the person you came with😅 Good atmosphere and all in all we really enjoyed our evening there❤️🙏🏽
The Pig & Whistle is a classic San Francisco pub with a cozy, traditional feel. It's a great spot to grab a pint and some classic pub fare like fish & chips or bangers and mash. The food is solid and the portions are generous. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is lively, especially when they have trivia night. If you're looking for a taste of a traditional pub experience in San Francisco, the Pig & Whistle is worth checking out.
Nice to find a place to get a quick drink, use wifi and get some fresh air
Great hospitality and a friendly environment. The food is delicious. Besides the fish and chips, the cheeseburgers and the bangers and mash are favorites. Don't forget a Guinness.
Great local pub bar. Great prices.
Great pub with friendly, comfortable atmosphere and very good food. We've liked everything we ordered. Large selections of drinks.
Great spot, kitchen closes at 9 though so just a heads up re google search. Crowd is fantastic though- really great neighborhood folks
I absolutely love this place. My girlfriend and bonus son have told me about the P & W. What a find! The food is awesome, I've had the fish and chips, their NY strip steak and pork chops. Served with fresh made mashed potatoes and gravy and steamed veggies. I'm not going to say the price point, but I will say this, you will have a hard time finding a place where you'll get more bang for your buck than here. Staff is awesome, drinks are great and also reasonably priced and the atmosphere is casual and the patrons are friendly. As a matter of fact, I'll be there for dinner later today 3/8.
Great neighborhood bar vibe. Friendly, quick bartenders. I haven’t retired their food yet, but it always looks like good bar food.
Great pub. The sausage rolls and the tuna melt were great. And of course, fresh Guinness!
As far as pubs go, this pretty good. The food is what you would expect. Could be a little cleaner. The bar is getting a bit greasy
A coworker told me that she had been checking out British pubs in the city because she was preparing for a trip to England. I thought to myself why I had never thought about looking for a British pub. I am constantly reading all things British. After a hike I stopped by and wow, yes it was absolutely worth it. I absolutely love the Shepard’s pie. I love the ambiance. The bartender was great. I really am looking forward to stopping by again.
One of the best fish and chips I got! The portion was pretty big but it was really so tasty that somehow I manage to eat all! The fish was perfectly friend and juicy inside and the French fries were fried in a point! The service was really nice. The place was costly and quite empty when I was there. If you pass by and you are hungry it is your place!
Took my family to this place for Fish & Chips after a recommendation from Torry Bruce from USF. Really good fish n chips. Definitely will be going back for lunch one day.
This place has a pretty authentic full English breakfast. Admittedly it’s missing the pudding, but basically no American place gets it all right. I noticed that they did have HP brown sauce, for you Brits and Anglophiles. They also do a really good, spicy bloody mary.
We were there on Saturday after moving my son into USF. We had some much needed beers and some great food. The bangers and mash were amazing! If you are in the area, you have to try this place.
Great English pub with the yummy pub food. Came just for drinks during our last visit. Lots of folks eating dinner at the bar. They have outdoor seating for when the sun decides to come out. Have been coming here over the years. Great place to watch a game, a meal, or a drink. Not pretentious. Heartily approved by my expat husband and friends.
I really like this place for lunch. They do an amazing fish and chips amongst other things on the menu. They're authentically British and proud of it. Bartender Chris is a good guy! They've only two tvs so don't go expecting them to change the channel to "days of our lives" lol they do an amazing lunch!!!!
Came in on a random Tuesday afternoon after doing errands and really enjoyed the vibe. Locals were already there, more came in, good ebb and flow, great staff, had the premier league on while I got there and changed to darts after it was done. Ordered the fish and chips and they were some, I’d not the best I’ve had in the city. Very cozy and awesome.
Legit authentic, right down to the accent! Stopped in for lunch. Roast beef was good, the brown gravy was over the top. Never had a Bakewell Fizz - will definitely be back for another of those! If you're looking for a British pub experience (football is honored here) with good food, drink, and hospitality, this is your go to spot!
Updated review 3/29/2025: We've been here a few times since my last review. Trivia night and random weekends. The drinks, food and service remains excellent. They let me bring my bicycle into the restaurant which is great. This is my midpoint for my weekend bicycle rides. This time I brung friends and the place was full. We had, wings $9.75, sausage rolls $7.75 and jalapeno poppers $7.50 as our appetizers. Fish and chips $16.75, 2x cheese burgers $15.50, pork loin chops $16.50, New York steak $18.25 as our entrees. Love the bartenders here, the skinny lady, Gary and Steve. Original review: The Pig & Whistle serves goujon sized fish & chips $13.75. I would have preferred one whole piece like how they do it in London. The ratio of batter and fish was good. The outside was crispy and soft on the inside. This was delicious. Too bad they didn't have mushy peas or regular peas as a side. The sausage rolls $6.75 were also terrific. Bonus points for having HP sauce on the tables. They have a great selection of beers on tap. I enjoyed my few pints of Firestone Union Jack IPA, London Pride and Stella. Great job bartenders and chef at The Pig & Whistle. This is a fun bar.

The Pig and The Whistle is a great neighborhood bar. Always a good time there. The food is pretty good as well. We always stop here whenever we are in San Francisco.
Everything here is outstanding !! Especially the customer service!! The food and beers were amazing, but I got to hand it to the bartender/server - - I left my wallet on table - - he chased me down half a block away to return it to me !! Thank you so much ! We will definitely be returning!!
Never been but what I can see based on the S.F. Chronicle and reviews/pics, is that this place is an absolute staple. Not my place to say I know, but I hope you and the private schools planning on kicking y’all out can work something out. I don’t even drink but the charm of a place to eat and drink and decompress at a reasonable price is essential for a neighborhood and a community. The Pig and Whistle has gotten 5 star reviews from hundreds of patrons for good reason. I hate the trend that rich folk are gentrifying and depersonalizing so many blocks of this city.
Quiet (during the day) neighborly place. Quiet efficient polite bartender (during the day). A few patrons on their computers, a group of guys drinking and talking in the corner. Simple well prepared inexpensive tasty pub food to accompany a glass of beer.
I had lunch here several weeks ago. The Bangers and mash was excellent. I washed it down with a Guinness too. The bartender was handling the entire bar and tables. He was very friendly and fast. There was a football match going on that had other customers hyped up. Great atmosphere.
The Pig and Whistle is a very atmospheric bar with a classic pub vibe that makes you feel welcome right away. The staff is excellent — friendly, attentive, and genuinely positive, which makes the whole experience even better. The food is solid and satisfying, perfect to pair with drinks and good company. I had a great time here and would definitely come back. It’s a fantastic spot to relax, enjoy the atmosphere, and spend an enjoyable evening in the city.

Lovely place great location. Walked there and had a nice meal for a good price.
The staff was friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was great. I wasn't impressed with the food. I had the fish fry n chips. I come from a place that's big on fish fry and maybe this one was just different. I Give it four stars still because at the end of the day it's a pub so it is what it is. They did the pub aspect well
The Pig and Whistle is as good a British pub as you can find in the City. The front room where the bar is can get loud, but there is a quiet back room where you can eat, drink and talk if you don't feel like bar energy. The fish and chips were fantastic. The fish was firm but moist and its batter was crispy and delightful. My friend had the Chicken Masala Curry which hit all the right flavor notes. They make a fine Manhattan.
Great food. Nice price. Old pub atmosphere
The fish and chips were wonderful! Tender and flaky fish, extremely light crispy batter fried to a perfect golden brown. It was a very satisfying meal especially with being able to eat at their outdoor tables. Would definitely recommend!

Nice and cozy spot. Friendly bartenders. The sausage rolls were great. I’ve had better fish and chips though. There was too much batter on the fish. Also, there was a baby mouse running around, and when my friend told the bartender, all he said was, it happens.

Showed up at 12:15 am on a Monday and it was closed. The area was pretty dead so I get it. Sucks cuz we ubered there and had to go back. Oh well. Just wanted to let you know. Looks and sounds like a good place. Maybe next time we are in town.
Went here for my birthday with friends, and as it was my choice to bring my friends here, a choice I made based upon all the positive reviews, I was mortified with the serving of each dish. Never have I been more embarrassed by the food that was served to my friends. The staff and drinks are top notch, and the atmosphere is great for an afternoon of drinking also. However, the food sucked! Really bad from start to finish. Don't know how so many positive reviews came to be. Also, could have been cleaner.....Like I say, fine for a drink or 3, but DON'T EAT HERE!
The staff and customers were incredibly rude. I can’t help but think that it’s because we were the only non-white people in the bar. We were grabbing post dinner drinks for my friends bday and the bartender tried to kick us out because not everyone ordered a drink. (Like half of the group did). We were only there for like 5-10 minutes, it’s not like we were parked there for hours. Then someone came up to us and said “isn’t it a bit late to be celebrating your birthday” as if we weren’t wanted there. Very unpleasant experience after we tried being nice.
