Stepped into this little bar on a seedy block of 6th & Market to use the restroom. (It’s steps from legendary Tu Lan Vietnamese where Julia Child once ate.) Stayed for a smooth glass of Japanese whiskey neat, $17.30 before tip. Apple Pay accepted. I tried the friendly bartender’s recommendation, and she was on point. Good liquor and draft beer selection. Good atmosphere inside that belies the chaotic street scene outside. Hip music. I liked my visit here one Thursday midnight before Halloween. Satisfaction delivered, straight up!
The Rumpus Room is a gem. Cozy, dimly lit, and effortlessly cool—exactly what you want from a neighborhood bar in SF. The drink selection is excellent, especially if you’re into well-poured beers and solid cocktails without any pretension. The vibe is relaxed, the music is just right, and it’s a place where you can actually have a conversation. Bartenders are friendly and know their stuff, which makes the whole experience feel welcoming and unforced. Easily one of my go-to spots in the city.
For a dark and stormy done right this is the right place. Love my bartender she was raised in the building above the bar. Was able to speak on the area knowledgeably and I loved that.
Such a cool place with cool vibe! Really nice staff :) Had a few moscow mules and jell-o shots, so good!
Don't let the rough exterior fool you - it's all part of the charm of this gorgeous dive (said with the most love and meant as the highest compliment) bar. The owner Roxanne slings drinks behind the bar that many brings many of the locals in. Their happy hour is nothing to scoff at either, where else can you find a $3 draft? It's a beloved place where people come in and know each other by name. The drinks are stiff and the interior is gorgeous art deco. The Warfield is right across the street, a prime music/concert venue. Roxanne can give you the history of the place - the building itself is from the 1900s - and has a strong claim to be one of the oldest gay bars in SF (but don't take my word for it). The neon was commissioned (not to give it away) to look authentic and it does. They have bands and DJs, and karaokes on Tuesday nights. Take a deep breath, think of how thirsty you are, and lean into it: the rumpus room awaits.
"This is my kind of place", declared one of our party. We all heartily agree with the sentiment, but remain divided in the best thing about the Rumous Room. Was it the photo booth, or perhaps the 70's acid blues that provided the soundtrack to our confab. The sprinkling of friendly locals, and knowledgeable bartender who put us at ease and concocted the perfect Paper Plane. Different strokes, something for everyone. Pour moi? The spiral staircase leading to inky heights.
The bartenders are cool people. The drinks are affordable. This is a good spot to swing by after work.
Fun little bar. Oldie music with a disco feel. Upper and lower levels. Nice and clean with good views.
Great find on our visit to SF!! Very retro decor. Good beer selection including local brews, also with full bar. Friendly staff.

$15 for a hangar one martini. Great little stop before heading to a show at the Warfield.
Love the lighting and the overall mood in here. It’s a great spot to just grab a drink and hang out for a while. Definitely has a cool, low-key energy.
Great Dive bar on 6th with a cool, dark retro feel. Double high interior. Generally good music. Cheap drinks for San Francisco (hey, it's on 6th Street). Cool bartenders.
Loved the place. This is a classic San Francisco bar. I have pictures of bars in the area from 100 years ago, and this place could fit right in. I didn't eat, so didn't give a rating.
Hey, it's a Dive Bar on 6th St. Just off Market St. keep that in mind. In other words it's a Great place for what it is and has always been. Don't expect to be awed by decor or drink menu. Do expect reasonably priced drinks served in a friendly an hospitable manner, without pretense or pressure. Joey (door guy) and Heather (Bartender) were both affable and attentive without feeling overbearing. They were great. Saying anything good about the environment just outside the door would be contrived. But, somehow once inside the Bar the depressing outside circumstances are for a time miles away. So... If you find yourself in the neighborhood and want a good drink. Pop on in and Enjoy.
This place has a great atmosphere, most delish and affordable drinks IN SF, great DJ, and Bri is a great bartender!
Amazing experience here :)! We were able to bring our own food so hubby and I got a slice down the block and ate and had a few drinks. Bartender was very nice and service was quick. Even got a shirt for memories. Will be back next time I am in SF!

This dive bar is peak San Francisco. One night it’s German house, the next it’s funk, then suddenly it’s Britney. Total chaos—in a good way. There’s karaoke, an upstairs bar with some seating, but I recommend grabbing a stool at the ground floor bar. Great people-watching and a wildly mixed crowd. It’s not polished, not trying to be, and perfect for a late-night drink in the Tenderloin. You’ll either stay for one or accidentally shut the place down. No two visits are ever the same.

Great service for a dive bar.
This place is exactly what the other reviews say it is. A simple little dive bar with good customers and good staff. It's location is not great but that's what makes the drinks affordable. Managed to go on a Tues. night and it was Karaoke night. It was a blast.

I can’t say, that the bar is bad. We tried to get there and gone through the Taylor St. As we stand in front of the door, there was a lot of creepy people. We felt very unsafe and the entrance was very dark and dirty. A lot of police and crime around the door. It’s possible that the bar is more than ok. We won’t visit this side of the city again.
