A very nice evening in the 1927 dining car. I recommend the rib eye, and the signature corn salad is quite enjoyable as well. Service is good... Not speedy, but helpful and polite. I recommend this place highly.
Group on dinner was awesome! Everything from the appetizer to the desserts was fantastic especially our waiter Arthur! Only negative was my Old Fashion cocktail. Was just average.
It was the perfect steak meal. We stepped in early, and had the $55 steak - amazing !! Totally worth it. And the service was friendly and quick, made us feel at home. The salad starter was VERY good - fresh and crispy. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a great steak
Awesome service. Awesome food ! I'm from Chicago, a city known for their great steak houses, so if I want a steak this is my first choice
Excellent service, well prepared and flavorful. Sam in the bar was wonderful. We will be back.
Beautiful atmosphere and the perfect romantic setting for special occasions. The food is deliciously prepared to perfection and the staff is knowledgeable and courteous
Nice place to eat at. John served me and he was nice and quick. Always made sure I had enough water. It was 111 degrees today
Have been twice, once for weekday lunch and once for weekend dinner. Both times had great service, food and atmosphere. My three kids aged 13 to 27 really enjoyed it also.
We have been here several times and the quality of the food has always been stellar! If you like Monte Cristo sandwiches, I highly recommend sitting in the lounge to get one (I don't think they're on the dinner menu in the main restaurant). Cozy decor and nice atmosphere. Bon Appetit!
Great place for a business lunch, sit in the train car. It's a red caboose. The art is swankey people and cars from the 20's and 30's. A beautiful display in the historic Los Rios San Juan Depot area. I love San Juan Cap more than the beach. Horses, people with dogs, the Mission.
Splendid food, cozy environment and rare settings. My husband and I had our belated Valentine dinner at the restaurant. The food was amazing to say the least. We waited for our table at the bar and the bartender was very friendly with great attitude. Being able to see the real train swift by next to your table while having our wonderful meals was truly wild and fanciful experience. We had sea bass, rib-eye steak and desserts. The fish was very fresh and seasoning was perfect. Nick's steak was cooked to perfection along with veggies, mushroom sauce, and roasted mashed potato. For desserts, we had strawberry cheesecake, peanut butter creme brulee, and fresh raspberry sherbet. They were awesome! If you appreciate landmark places in OC with good food, this is the restaurant to visit for your special occasion.
I am at this restaurant at least twice a week during and after photo shoots. I am a photographer that loves shooting in San Juan Capistrano. The service is always 5 star never had poor service here. The owner is very friendly. The steak and fish dinners are really good and the desert and sweet potato fries are a must!!!
I had the pleasure of being waited on by an older gentleman named Burton . Very informative on the wines and just overall a very good waiter who treated us like royality . We will definitely be there again and hope we get seated in his section again . We had a wonderful time
Took my date on the train from Anaheim to San Juan. We walked around and needed a place to eat. Saw this place. Love the environment. Felt like we were taken back in time. Service was exceptional. Highly recommend.
I took my 93 year old Mother here for dinner. We used Groupon and had a wonderful dinner. The desserts are fantastic. We received great service and I would recommend Vintage to anyone.
Can't say enough good things about this place. The atmosphere is wonderful, the service is amazing, and the food was fantastic. My steak was cooked to perfection. Would gladly return!
Such a great time! The staff was amazing. The food was amazing. We sat next to the tracks and that just added to the evening. The live music was remarkable. Definitely going to be back!
A wonderful meal and experience for our weary family. We stopped in while waiting for a train next door. The kids loved the decor and dining in a train car. The staff, bartender from Montreal in particular, were attentive and engaging. My family's meals were good and my pizza was spectacular. A very pleasant surprise in our travel day.
Very cute and quaint restaurant. Definitely a cool place to go for a romantic dinner (must sit in the actual train). I had the New York Steak....and it was delicious! Servers were very quick and nice. Will definitely be back - gotta take the hubby! :)
Incredible steaks! Delicious food all the way around! My fave restaurant. Whenever we dine here it's more than having dinner it's a unique experience we really enjoy. We can sit in the dining room and watch the trains pass by just feet away from us and occasionally see people getting on and off. It's hard to decide if we will sit in the dining room side or the train car side where you can dine like passengers. Both are so much fun. The service is stellar. The best way to finish our evening is with a Vintage dessert. How about peanut butter creme brulee!
We held a corporate holiday event at The Vintage Steakhouse last Friday and it was absolutely outstanding!! The service was great, the room set-up was perfect, and the food and wine selection was excellent! Our guests were very impressed and mentioned that they will be returning on their own in the future! This venue is a true gem of San Juan and we are SO happy that we found it!!
We used a groupon and really enjoyed our night. The train car was cosy, clean, well decorated. The wait staff was very attentive and helpful. The meal was delicious and filling. We both had steak, a treat for us, and it was well cooked and tasty. The peanut butter dessert was over the top. Great meal.
I stumbled upon this place on my way to another steak house and I'm glad I did. It has a true steak house feel, dark, warm, and cozy; but there is wine and other novelties for sale there. The bar and bartender is much more than you would expect, elite for a restaurant in this area. The service was exactly what you expect from a good SoCal restaurant. The food was the star of the show. We went with recommendations from the bartender, super glad we did. We liked the bar tender and the company so much we decided to eat at the bar. I had the bone in rib eye and it was spectacular! As good a steak as I've had in all my travels. This place is as pricey, more so than most in this area, but it's so worth it. Great date night, great for special occasions, or any other instance.
This place is incredible. Music from the 40s, a beautiful bar, white table cloths, really well trained and impeccably dressed staff. It's been a while since I've been somewhere with trained servers - what an experience! We went just for ice cream and drinks with our two little girls and each got a bowl with two huge scoops! I definitely will go back next time I'm in SJC!
Great food. Hamlet 2 times we ate here the service was totally different. The first gentleman we had over a year ago was so knowledgeable about the menu very personable very attentive just an amazing experience. This time my drink went dry twice didn't come back often and just was not as pleasurable as the first time. The food is always good though enjoyed our meal immensely. Came here on a Groupon so got a good deal
Turkey was good not great. Attended Thanksgiving dinner at this time establishment. The service is top notch. The setting can't be replicated anywhere else. I felt like the Great Gatsby. However the Turkey dish was mediocre. Maybe it was just me missing Mom's classic feast. But I think they could have done better. My date had the ribeye. I suffered from plate jealousy most of the evening.
The food at the Vintage is almost always very good. The wait staff is not friendly. Then there is the patio, come on. Someone needs to look at the entrance. Rundown furniture on the patio. It needs to look inviting especially since the place next door opened.
It was good. We brought our kids to give them a fine dining experience. They got a kick out of the fact that half of the restaurant was a train car. The steaks were cooked as ordered, but I've definitely had better for less money. The steamed veggies and creamed corn were tasty. My wife want very hungry and ordered a cheesy noodle dish off the appetizer menu that was excellent. Overall good, but I think I expected more for my money.
Restaurant is in a nice location along the train tracks and it has a fun interior inside old train cars. The food was quite good but the steaks we ordered were undercooked. That did not take away from the taste, but still wasn't happy that they didn't cook them to our liking. Service was also extremely slow at times and our waiter had a tendency to be quite forgetful. Overall though it was a nice restaurant and I would come back to give it another try. Also, I don't recommend ordering the lemon drop martinis.
It was Mother's Day always a busy time for all the restaurants. The place was very inviting with families and friends seated in the dining room. The food and atmosphere was terrific only complaint is it took too long to get our food. Despite that situation, we had a great time and appreciated an attendant helping with the parking. Thanks for the rose and making mama happy. R
Really good food and a fun environment. I have not been there in many many years. This was a very pleasant surprise. Both our Server and the bartender went out of their way to accommodate us. We will be back.
Blown away! I took my husband here for a special occasion and admittedly had very high expectations. Every detail of the service was perfect. And the food was more than we ever could have hoped for. It's obvious Chef Igor knows his stuff. We'll be coming back to celebrate life's milestones (hopefully more frequent) for years to come.
The service was awesome and that's a huge thing for me nowadays. The food was ok but very expensive. Monday's not many food places open, but they were open and not crowded so we checked it out. Great vintage decor and once again great service. Will we go back? Maybe ....but if we do it will be for the lunch times.
The food and service were excellent. After a $200 dinner for two, the plastic bags and styrofoam containers took our dining experience to a very low (the food could have been all organic and sourced from regenerative farms too) we got lots of work!
A unique experience for sure, great area to walk around after. Food was good, better than I expected as the service started out rough. Fun to experience the idea of sitting on a train, but probably won't go back.
The food was fantastic, however the staff appeared to largely be new and lacking full training. There were enormous delays between standard expected interactions (placing an order, delivering bread, checking in, gaps between appetizers, entrees and dessert, delivering the check, picking up the check), leading to a more than 2.25 hour end to end experience.
The kitchen put forward really great tasting food! Nice ambiance and decor. Tables and doors felt sticky (not clean). Attention from the wait staff was not stellar.
The food was good here, but not as good as I had anticipated. We came for lunch and I was a bit disappointed that there was no steak on on the lunch menu. It is a steak house after all. The scampi appetizer is great, the sauce is delicious, but the wings were only so so.
The restaurant has it's own unique concept in which the guests can dine on a train carriage. It's right next to the San Juan Capistrano train station. It's perfect for travelers and tourists. The restored vintage train is perfect for anyone who enjoys history while dining. The menu is not so unique but still satisfactory. I had the philly cheesesteak sandwich and my favorite part of the dish was the fries. However, if you suffer from claustrophobia, this is not the place for you. It felt a little hard to breath and eat because of the confined space of the carriage. The service was pleasant but with one server during our visit, it was kind of slow. Worth a visit from history buffs.
We have been eating here for years, my wife's Grandma likes it. However, the service is uninspired and very slow. A club sandwich is 14.00 and the taste is avg at best. I would never eat here if it were my choice.
great tomahawk steak....too bad the service sucked. I'm pretty sure our waiter was high on meth. They forgot salads, one meal ands soups. Bill took 45 minutes to bring after we asked for it. . . . Then there were duplicates on the bill. *sigh* too bad too because the steaks were fantastic.
This place was 'just ok' - my girlfriend and I received a Groupon for this restaurant. They funnel all of their Groupon and Living Social guests into one room where there is a set menu with various choices for your meal. The smoked trout appetizer was fantastic and everything else was par for the course. The listed prices for what we ordered were way higher than the quality of food would indicate. And the service was consummate with the staff's knowledge of our being "Grouponers" - sub par at best and really should not have tipped the 20% on pre-discount bill. Your experience may differ when you pay "full price" but tbh the quality of food does not justify a second attempt.
Average food, average service, lousy setting. The restaurant was so hot my wife and I couldn't enjoy the food. My rib eye steak wasn't as good as I can make myself at home. We asked our waiter for some A/C. He complained of having to work in the heat and agreed that the restaurant was too hot for his customers. Maybe that's why we rarely saw him. I had to walk to the bar to get my own glass of ice water. In short, I'm not going back and neither should you.
Too bad. Owners seem indifferent to mediocre food. They also own Gemmel's at Dana Point where the co-owner really presses the cooks and staff. The food, staff are mediocre and the cook is a shame. Talked to the owner several times...he seems to have agreed but tourists need not return for the owner to make a good buck!
It's very sad that after seeing all these other great reviews on this place, we get to be the ones who get the bad side of the service. Took a while before we got greeted, had to ask for straws and our order came or wrong. We were offered bread for our meals which came at the end of the meal. We had to ask for our drinks to be refilled which again, took a while to get. Got checked on twice during our visit here. Very disappointing for the rating it has. Can't say I'll be back again. Where's Ruby's?
Extremely disappointed. Steak sandwiches were terrible...Bad cut full of gristle and fat and cooked to a crisp (we were asked how we wanted them cooked and ordered them medium rare). The kid's cheeseburger were also cooked until they were black. Waiter was nice and attentive but got several things wrong in the order. Why do wait staff insist on trying to remember the whole order instead of writing it down? They almost always get something wrong. I never speak up when we get a bad meal but we did complain about the sandwiches. The manager said that it's too thin too cook rare (then why'd they ask how to cook it?) If you can't cook it without burning it, change it. Spent way too much money on a terrible overpriced meal just so the kids could have the experience of eating in a trian car. We won't be going back.
Very dissapointed! Only two other tables at 7:30 on a Fri. night. That should have tipped us off. My wife ordered a flank steak. The meat had spoiled! Inexperienced waiter returned the plate to kitchen and came back to inform us that the chef was throwing out all the remaining flank cuts and would she like a different cut. Her replacement Top Sirloin was fine. At no time did a manager or the chef come to our table to apologize and they charged us for my wife's replacement meal. Standard would have been to comp her meal. Never returning here again.
Extremely disappointed for being our first time having dinner here. I was born and raised in San Juan. Not sure if it has to do with color, but very bad service and food was not too great. Our waiter did not come for almost 7 minutes, never introduced himself, forgot our salads, forgot our mushroom sauce.. should I keep going? yet it was not that busy at all. i'll leave it at that.
Expected great food. Especially at this price!! Giving 1 star cuz you have to give something. Only good thing was we sat in a restored pullman train car. The service sucked and the food was deplorable. Cocktails took forever to get and at different times. Wasn't packed so no excuse. Paid $125 for garbage. So pissed! The bernaise sauce which is usually a pourable sauce, was congealed in the serving boat! We literally turned it upside down and it stayed in it's container!! The Cabernet demi glaze was so salty, was also inedible and ruined the steak. The veggies were bland without ANY flavor at all and improperly cooked. The mashed potatoes were watery and sat in a puddle on the plate, were instant potatoes for sure. And the list continues. The server was rude when we told him of just a couple of the things wrong. My boyfriend is an executive chef for over 30 years and he says it was THE WORST food he's ever been served. Do not waste your money nor time here.
The service was very slow, the food was okay, steak was good. Tea was lukewarm and after we asked hot water we got a bit warmer SALT water. Chicken nuggets for kids came after starting dishes and was undercooked and burned on the outside. And they made a mistake with one of the side dishes. Waiter was nice and friendly, though that was more for his gratuity and less because of dedication to service, it seemed . Not sure if that's the reason but it's worth mentioning that we were dinning on a Groupon.
