I greatly enjoyed a carne asada burrito. It was very tasty and moist. I've eaten a lot of burritos in my lifetime, and this one ranks at the top. I was only able to rate the food with a "5". It deserves much higher. I added the green avocado sauce at the salsa bar, and that too enhanced even more flavor. I can't imagine I'd order anything different, as this was the very best burrito I've ever eaten. My wife and I dined on the patio next to the SLO creek. I will return!!!

Our burrito and chimichanga tasted fresh and yummy! The portion size was big enough for almost two meals. They have outdoor seating and the staff was very friendly!

I have lived here for such a long time and I cannot believe I had never seen this place before. The food was amazing, the prices were better than fair, and the service was friendly and fast. In addition to all that they were also open later than any other place in town on Saturday night. I will definitely be coming back to Tonita's as my new go-to Mexican food establishment.

Polo Colorado burritos are the best I've ever had! Staff is friendly and makes you feel like you are part of the family. I highly recommend that you order a burrito as soon as possible!

The cashier has always been extremely kind and helpful even with the crazy 230am crowd the cooks always thank the customers too for waiting when it’s completely understandable that they take a few moments to get so many orders ready and they still get it all done quickly and done right. The only Mexican food place that never disappoints in San Luis

Great little place in SLO to get authentic, homey Mexican food. This place is legit. Their burritos are packed and flavorful, same for the tacos, and the horchata is fantastic. As some have said, sometimes the front counter workers aren't always the most friendly, but they're decently nice people, and the food is great.

D
Diana Rodriguez

My beef and chicken tacos were great. My friend didn't love her wet burrito but IDK why those exist tbh 😅 Service was great and the spot is very cozy serving fresh salsas.

R

The workers here are AMAZING! Tonita's is a family owned business and everyone there is friendly, humble, and kind. The food was excellent. I ordered the California Burrito (vegetarian style) and a Large Horchata and it was all good! The salsas are homemade and flavorful. One of the few Mexican food spots in SLO that you need to try!!

The only authentic Mexican flavors in San Luis county? I looked hard, far, and wide, and this is THE spot. So many saucey meats packed into FAT burritos, and the chips crisped to perfection. Kind of expensive, but I loved the people that run the place so no hard feelings on that front. Worth it! Hidden gem. That said, I never saw the "drunk rush", as I'm more of a luncheon kinda guy. So I missed a whole scene. Drunk people have good taste apparently...

Food is SO good, nice sized portions too! Salsa bar, chilled beers & wines & chips are not greasy... Mmmmmm!! Nice prices for excellent Mexican food!🍺😋🌮 P.S. Check out the back patio overlooking the creek with Madonna as a backdrop, nice shady spot to lunch!

I was so happy they were open late Friday night. My fiancee and I went in for a late night dinner and had the beef nachos and carnitas combo. Best Mexican food I've had in a long time. Very authentic and that guacamole was on point. Great job guys!

Definitely the place to get Mexican food on a sunny day. $8- $11 plates with counter service and plates delivered to your table. Inside has a few tables, but their patio over the creek is amazing. I wasn't expecting to be amazed by the food, but I was. Great customer service and fast.

Absolutely amazing. Just passing through at 11pm. Didn't have to wait. Easy to access and phenomenal food. Best salsa bar, great staff, carne aside burrito to die for. Not a local, but I will definitely be driving back just to eat here. Thanks Tonitas you made my night and my drive home much better!

Great place open late except Wednesday! Super nice family owns the restaurant and makes sure you have an excellent dining experience. Definitely the most 'socal' Mexican food in SLO. They do not pack rice rice and beans filler into all their burritos, amazing, what a concept!

R
Regina Cuevas

Authentic beans made the right way, same deal with the rice. Huevos a la Mexicana were very tasty and salsas were fresh and they had a good selection. Steady amount of people dining in and picking up. I'd definitely come here again. :)

Wonderful food and wonderful people. I love this place! Tacos have guacamole, everything is fresh. Good meat portion on tacos. I have nothing bad to say. Best place ever and I love them. I eat here at least once a week on my lunch break. Easy parking. Great prices. Also Creekside dining. Back patio is on the creek.

As a taco lover, this was a delight. Carne asada didn't have a ton of flavor but with the and the green sauce it was great. The chips were yummy, light and crispy. The BBQ adobado street taco was tasty. Loved eating on the patio overlooking the creek area and busy shopping area.

Haven't had anything I don't like from here yet and they are seeing me 2 or 3 times a week since I moved so close. Consistently good and quick food with friendly staff I would highly recommend. I get my post mountain bike ride nachos every Thursday night here. Salsa bar slaps as well.

Tonita’s Mexican Food is a hidden gem offering authentic, flavorful dishes with generous portions. Their tacos, burritos, and enchiladas are packed with fresh ingredients and bold, traditional flavors. The salsa is a must-try, adding the perfect kick to any meal. The staff is friendly, and the service is quick, making it a great spot for a casual, satisfying meal. Whether you’re dining in or taking out, Tonita’s delivers excellent Mexican food at a great value.

Handily the best Mexican restaurant in the County. Their tortillas are homemade and somehow fresh even when you order at 2am. The salsa selection is excellent, service is brisk and generally cheerful and I've yet to try a menu item that didn't hit me like a freight train from flavortown. Not everyone's favorite, because weakness exists in this world and must be purged by those strong enough to purchase a burrito when God himself is not awake to stop you. Sort of pricey for a taqueria and parking can get tricky, but well worth it for the food.

Absolutely blown away by the Pollo Colorado Burrito at Tonita’s Mexican Food! It was hands down the most amazing burrito I've ever had. The mole sauce was super mellow and complemented the burrito perfectly. The flavors were rich and authentic, making every bite a delight. The portion size was generous, and the service was top-notch. 12/10 experience. Highly recommend! If you’re a fan of Mexican cuisine, Tonita’s is a must-visit. The staff is incredibly friendly, and every dish is prepared with love and care, which shows in the taste. I can’t wait to come back and try more from their menu. #BestMexicanFood #AmazingBurrito #FoodieFavorites #MoleSauceMagic #12OutOf10 #MustTry #SupportLocalEats #TonitasMexicanFood #FoodLoversParadise #MexicanCuisine #AuthenticFlavors #HiddenGem #GourmetExperience #BurritoBliss #TopNotchService

Don't know why this place only has 3.5 stars. It's a great alternative to fast food for a late night bite. The ladies are so sweet and the back patio is cute and quaint. I got a huge California burrito for $8 and it was delicious. The fries were crispy, the chicken was good, and the guacamole tasted super fresh. It's not really authentic but it's good.

The tacos I ordered for my son and I were really big and filled with a lot of meat. They were really good and they even added some avocado on the side with some chips. Prices are ok. Great customer service.

Nice little Mexican place, it has the regular selections of burritos and tacos one would expect here on the Central Coast. My wife and I stopped by for a late lunch, the woman working the counter was very friendly and helpful. I had the Carnitas burrito with everything and my sweetheart had the Chile relleno burrito. They were both quite good, home made beans and sauces. The Carnitas tasted of pork and maybe a bit of lard, it was very good. The Chili relleno burrito was filled with a well made relleno and was also quite tasty. We could not finish all of them and plan on eating the rest for lunch today. College students seem to also like this place for late night eating. Not much room, just a few tables, order at a counter. Worth it for good eats.

Food is pretty good, would give it 5 stars but they forgot to put jalapeños in my torta and the young woman at the register today was kind of slow. It was clear she was new, but at the very least she should've learned the menu before ringing people up.

The only place with menudo! Drove almost everywhere around 10pm and no one had it or they were closed. Good place to go too. Unfortunately they didn't have cabeza or lengua because of the areas demographics. We also got tacos de asada

Great house-fried chips and house-made salsa! Good value combo plate. My wife and I could hardly finish the 3 enchilada plate, which included rice and beans. Too bad their fountain drink machine was broken! And they had bottled Coke, but not Diet Coke. Great patio dining over a creek.

Great little place to sit and enjoy some great Mexican food while sitting next to the creek. Food is delicious and the portions are generous. The folks that run the place are friendly and always have smile for you. My wife and I eat there often when errands take us to SLO. The food is great but the patio really makes it a wonderful place to eat outdoors. You have a great spot under the huge sycamore trees while listening to the babble of the creek below. The children's museum is across the creek so you get to hear those happy sounds too. Highly recommended. Go. Eat. Enjoy!

I really didn't get to fully experience the whole ambiance of the restaurant, but it's a nice little spot that is open until 3:00 a.m. what I could comment on is the one particular food item that I chose on their menu which was I believe it was called nacho fries. It is very similar to the carne azada fries that I had over in San Diego but these particular carne azada fries or "nacho fries" was not traditional layered how I envisioned it. The natural fries obviously had french fries and I substituted the meat from steak or carne azada, to Al Pastor. In this particular food item they added guacamole sour cream and queso fresco I believe. It was really good but it didn't compare to San Diego's carne azada fries. This dish is still good nonetheless for a night time Munchie meal. This place is easy to find and they do have a waiting area outside which is very convenient. Limited parking though but if you're from San Luis Obispo or attending Cal poly or going to college there I'm pretty sure a simple stroll to that Mexican restaurant is quite pleasant and very convenient. The two ladies that were working there when I ordered my food we're very nice, very knowledgeable of the food and could recite you pretty much everything on the menu and the ingredients that they have with ease. And if you were bilingual and organ Spanish then knowing the ingredients is a plus. Not only knowing the ingredients but also speaking with the staff as well. I would say that the item that I ordered was fairly priced. I cannot say anything else about their food or their prices because I did not pick up a menu. I say if you're in the area go check it out and they're open late too.

Better than taco bell but not by much. The usual Sysco faire with Southern California style burritos. The patio is great but otherwise nothing to write home about.

Many will love it . I only liked it. Sorry. I'm no dummy but having no real in hand menu's is not very hospitable. We had chicken fajitas. Chicken was on the tough side , peppers were hardly even blanched much less cooked enough to be considered cooked more than maybe 5% And what's the deal with having to order an side order of rice and beans for most of your meals.. I've never been to a restaurant that did not include in the meal. At any rate it's a nice place but yeah not for me.

Delicious food, don't order on the phone. The ingredients taste fresh and delicious but I asked if the fish tacos came with avocado and the person on the phone said yes so I asked for extra avocado. Got it to the hotel, no avocado at all but what looks like extra extra sour cream. Super messy and definitely not as good as avocado. I also ordered chips and salsa but that didn't make it into the bag either. If I got what I ordered I'd have given 4-5 stars.

Foods good. But way over priced for what you get. Especially in a college town with lots of options.

DON’T DO IT!! Service was great but the food is not! My fajita burrito tasted bland and the rice was super mushy. My husband got a chicken quesadilla and it, too, was bland and just not good. The guacamole is not good at all!! It’s been years since we’ve eaten here and now we remember why. They get a two star instead of one because the guy working the counter was super nice and helpful. We won’t be back.

My wife and I ordered a chicken burrito each. The younger lady serving was polite and encouraged us to use the outdoor section at the back which we did. However the tables and chairs were grubby and wobbly. The Burrito seemed pretty good at first, a generous portion, however, the older man with the apron who may have been the owner/manager. Not sure, came out to the back of the restaurant, close to where we were sitting with a hacking cough and did a gross loud spit of flem over the fence. He continued to make all sorts of hideous ill-person noises and this really put us off our food. We left with our food half-eaten. I hope we didn’t catch anything!

So I tried to find something good to say, but could not my taco tasted like salt and oil with wet lettuce on top. Did not eat past the second bite, when looking at the food that my friends got it looked about the same. The taquitos looked pretty good, deep fried correctly.

M
Melissa

First of all their soda machine was out of syrup. Which wouldn't have been a problem had they said that before we paid for our drinks. Secondly they said that their avocado was fresh, it isn't. It's that spread stuff ehich is 🤢. He let us order, then told us sorry we are out of bread. Then when we finally get our food. My friends burrito had no meat!! It was my first & last time ever going there.

M
Matt Asche

The worst person working behind the counter taking your order. Needed a course in basic customer service. The food arrived with rice clumping together, from being over cooked, beans not hot, chicken taco not hot, and tasting odd. We were the only ones in the place , so no reason for food to be cold. We both ate very little of our food. I brought plate to girl working at the counter and told her how unhappy we were, …… she could care less. We both have had a lot of Mexican food in our days, and we both agreed that it was the worst we have ever had. I honestly don’t understand the five star marks it has.

A
Absalon Cabrera

On the menu they have “pozole” listed. They don’t tell you that it isn’t ready as they open their venue and they don’t tell you that you have to wait 2hrs for them to get it ready. $4.00 dollars wasted on parking that I could have saved if they were responsible enough to post and list waiting time(s) for specific dishes or at a minimum advertise that specific dishes aren’t available during specific hours. The clerk had to go ask if they plan on making it while the person she asked sat and ate! Traveling with a 2 year old and being told to come back in two hours is not the way to go!

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants. I just got out of work figured I'd buy food instead of cooking. Bought 3 plates didn't bother checking them. When I got home not one order was correct. The nachos was to have carne it was chicken carne fries had no cheese n the other order was completely wrong.

I am on vacation from Northern California, but originally grew up here in on the central coast and I am very disappointed and upset that I paid $35 plus tip for this poorly prepared meal. I had to endure rude, drunk and loud college kids and to top it off wasn't given any sauce I asked for and no tortilla chips. What kind of Mexican food place doesn't give you chips when you spend over $35? Maybe they are in business because of all the drunk college kids spending their parents money. I chose this place for my wife and I because of the good reviews and how they claimed the portion size was good. Well as you can see the burrito did not only taste terrible, but it was small and poorly wrapped. I hate leaving this review because it's not my style, but they struck out so many times with the food quality, customer service and overall experience. This has been a huge let down and forced my wife and I to dispose of the meal and go get food from somewhere else. If you want real Mexican good and a good experience then don't come here. If you want over priced greasy good then this is the spot.
