Following what starts as a small path just off the town center, follow the small uphill track for about 600m to the castle. When we went we were the only people there for about ,30 minutes when a family arrived so you get a real sense of peace and isolation. The primary selling point of this visit are the views which are quite stunning. Sarzana is mostly a modern town quiet town with far less tourists than many places along this coastal route. The cathedral is worth a quick visit, if just to see the oldest cross in Tuscany. There is also a second castle in bin the town itself, but the limited opening times make it difficult to visit both. We chose Fortezza di Sarzanello for the views and think we made the right decision. Interestingly we were going to have lunch in town when we finished but it seemed all the restaurants were closed in the afternoon!

This fortress is another hidden gem of Sarzana. This city really was the gateway to Tuscany. Both fortresses ordered built by Lorenzo di Medici and both are stunning. This one is a bit more magical since it has been overgrown by time. The grass and plants growing out of the fortress make for a majestic experience. I highly recommend the audio guide which takes you through all parts of the fortress, including the hidden underground.

Visiting the fortress of Sarzanello was an absolutely incredible experience! The beauty and grandeur of this historical site left me speechless. It took me almost an hour to walk up the trail from town. You should wear good shoes to walk the trail, not flip flops. There is an additional €1 you have to pay from what you see on the sign. The reduced price applies to anyone over 65. These are the prices and hours as of July, 2023.
