It’s not easy to find a vegan friendly restaurant in South Bay but Mayan kitchen surpassed all our expectations! They have authentic South American (mayan) food and lovely service. We have revisited multiple times and have never had any complaints.
The bao plus Mayan tacos tasted delicious. It was interesting to see bao served just like traditional Chinese style. Pricing felt reasonable overall, though a few items leaned higher. Service was smooth, leaving us happy while heading home.
First mayan restaurant I visited. I planned to come last month but didn't get a chance. Finally able to visit and try the food and drink. It has indoor and outdoor seating. It is located on closed street from vehicle. The interior is simple and you feel like you are somewhere at the restaurant in other part of America. It has plenty dishes and drink on the menu. This place will be "heaven" for vegitarian has it has plenty vegitarian dishes on the menu. We order mocktail which were refreshing. For appetizer? Yucca, tortillas chips, and elotes are yummy. The dipping for tortillas is very unique. It is not salsa. The bao and mayan tacos are yummy. Interesting the serve bao.it is exactly like Chinese bao. Pricewise it is reasonable but some are quite high. Service was good and we went home happy.
What an absolutely delightful restaurant with the most delicious food and amazing friendly atmosphere and service! Loved every dish and their awesome drinks and desserts! If you are craving high quality vegan food, definitely stop by here! Special mention to their Mayan hot chocolate which tastes like an absolute dream. Would love to be back!
They have plenty of vegan options. The food was phenomenal..I tried the vegan calamari taco (5/5). It's fried hibiscus. Loved it so had to try it again (so had 2 of them). (The service was great too, everyone seemed nice 🧁) P.S Don't alter/modify your order like I did. I modified one of the soft tacos to the crunchy one and didn't like it (too greasy).🥲 Vegan / Vegetarian / Veg review ☘️💚🌿
Located at 139 Murphy in Sunnyvale this very authentic restaurant is a delight with fresh vegetarian options and some meat options. The Yucatan fries are a must try.
We've eaten at Mayan Kitchen a few times, and we really like that they use whole local ingredients in creating their menu items. We typically get a few small plates because they have so many different options, from traditional Mayan fare to what seems to be Asian fusion. This last trip, I tried the quesa cochinita taco (pork taco with cheese grilled into the soft tortilla shell) and the wagyu beef empanada. They were both delicious in their individual ways. I loved the crust of the empanada and the mild savory filling. The Taco was bolder and the cheesy shell was delightful. My wife had the pollo bao bun, which was her favorite, along with the salmon taco. She said that was good. We also shared the chips and black bean dip. Their chips are made in-house and are the perfect blend of crispy and salty. The dip was also very tasty. The service was very attentive. We were able to chat with chef Correa, who was taking orders and circulated among the tables. Although we're meateaters, there were many options for vegetarians and vegans throughout the menu. The restaurant was clean and neatly decorated but not fancy. Still, it's nice to have a sit-down meal in a place that is designed for sitting and enjoying your food. We'll definitely be back!
We love Mayan Kitchen! The food is amazing, the service is great. I love that they have so many very clearly marked vegan options. We went there twice during our visit to Sunnyvale and will make it a regular stop when we are there visiting my son. This is a not to be missed restaurant for vegans and non-vegans alike. The Yucatan fries are amazing with the vegan aoili. Do not miss this.
Excellent small plate south American flavor restaurant. The service was quick and the taste of the food was well balanced. There are outside seating arrangements available and also large groups of people can be seated. A good quick bite place worth visiting.
An excellent local eatery. Excellent food and service. Food was flavorful and rich without being too heavy. Coming here, we were first greeted by welcoming and attentive hosts. They offered us a window seat so that we could watch our bikes. Throughout our meal, they were attentive and ready but not overbearing. I think this is a Hallmark of great service. The food was also prepared in the proper order and with great timeliness. As for the quality of the food, everything was top-notch. Mayan food will remind you a lot of Mexican, but it has its own flavors and takes that do set it apart. Nonetheless, the quality was there and I really enjoyed every item. There was a flavorful lightness to the food that left me happy and not feeling heavy. 10/10 recommend and I will be coming back.
Finally got a chance to eat here, and I was not disappointed. I had to wait a bit to get a table, but that is a good sign that the meal and eating experience will be worth it, and it was. The vegan options are on the regular menu, but they have a vegan only menu, which the server was nice enough to bring me after I had asked about a few of the vegan options. I had the Vegan Calamari, the Vegan Bao Bun, and a slice of Vegan Cheesecake. All good portions sizes and each one was very filling. They provide water for you to drink, and have other options, but I only had the water on this visit. Overall a great experience, and I can't wait to visit again to try more of their vegan menu. But seriously, you should try the cheesecake.
We had an outdoor lunch here on a weekday. Great service, really good food and the prices were very reasonable. We started with a few appetizers. The potato-cheese croquettes are amazing and so is the vegetarian bruschetta with fig glaze! Tacos and empanadas are small enough where you can get 2-3 and enjoy different flavor profiles in each one (highly recommend the salmon tacos and vegetarian empanadas). Would come here again!
The ambience was beautiful and the food was spectacular. We ordered multiple dishes and all were amazing. This place is great for those who enjoy meat and also for those who are vegan/vegetarian. I myself am vegetarian and saw the menu was incredibly vegan/vegetarian friendly. The queso fundido was 8/10 The potato croquette was 10/10 The vegan and cheese empanadas 10/10

My husband's found this place googling for elote. We'd been meaning to come here for a couple of years. Now that I finally have, I'm sad that we've been missing out. I had the quesacochinita with pork, he had the crispy shrimp taco, and we shared a plate of elotes. I strongly recommend all three! Service was excellent and quick. They brought us a lidded carafe (that didn't dribble!!!!!) of ice water with lemon peel. The napkins are large, absorbent, and highly effective! (Like the almost cloth-like towels you find in fancy restaurant bathrooms.) We ate outside, as S. Murphy Ave is closed to cars. We walked through the restaurant, before leaving, and it is lovely (framed pictures of spices, etc.), immaculate, and spacious. I highly recommend you check this place out for yourself!
Fantastic food! Many very tasty vegan options. The staff members were very helpful: always there when we needed them and worked hard to accommodate all of our requests.
Mayan Kitchen offers tasty food and good service, but there are a few things to be aware of. Ordering was a bit challenging for me since the menu felt somewhat chaotic, with too many “top seller” or highlighted items competing for attention. We started with the Sikil P’ak and the queso fundido to share. Both were enjoyable, and the tortilla chips were especially good. For my main dishes, I chose the cochinita pibil and the blue churrasco tacos. The cochinita was great. The churrasco tacos were decent, but the raw peppers didn’t quite work for me. Finally we ordered churros, which is a great way to end. 1 or 1/2 per person was more than enough for us. Service was good throughout, and while the tacos aren’t cheap, the pricing feels fair for the quality of the ingredients. One downside was the seating: our table had a half-sofa, half-chair setup, and the sofa was a bit uncomfortable — whenever someone moved, the whole seat bounced. Cocktails here are wine-based, which is worth noting, but they offer a nice selection of Mexican beers to balance it out. Overall, a flavorful and enjoyable experience with a few minor drawbacks.
This is one of the best vegetarian options around. It's extremely hard to find Mexican style vegetarian food. If you never been here. There's only restaurants and bars.So it gets extremely crowded on the weekends. There's plenty of parking across the street. And a big parking garage near by. We ordered a bunch of tapas so we could try all of the different options. The waitress came back to refill our drinks. I understand that it gets crowded on the weekends, but I felt like the guys were clearing the small plates quickly. I can't tell if that's good service or they were trying to rush us out. This is definitely a spot to try for a great vegetarian options
Good food, drinks and dessert selection. Friendly staff. Relaxed atmosphere. Love the simple decor of the space. However, the furniture makes it feel like a cafeteria It's a bit overpriced in our opinion, but it's in a good location with lots going on outside on the main street. Parking can be tricky when there are events happening, but it's worth a try
If you're a vegan this place is 100% worth it. And to go for restaurant week I feel like it's worth. For the drink menu, if you'll drink alcohol, go for the sangria. The white sangria which is bubbling and popping. The margaritas here are meh and I wouldn't get them. Our favorites were the vegan calamari taco and the bao. We have some gripes with them but they're great. First off, the vegan calamari tacos are crispy, well-stuffed, double-shelled. We both thoroughly enjoyed them but my gf had a hair between one of her two taco shells and I think that kind of ruined her appetite. They fixed the order up quickly so that's nice. The baos were great. Only weakness was the bottoms were a big soggy. As for the other dishes, the salbute was nice and crispy but airy and soft. The wagyu beef empanadas are meh. I wouldn't get them again and the stuffing isn't that flavorful. The spicy salsa is spot on. It's like 1/2 a jalapeno worth of heat. I would ask for it because it adds another layer to all of these dishes. The staff here is all prompt and even the head chef is out there on the front lines. The place is kept clean and modern.
I appreciate them being VERY vegan friendly. However, flavor wise it was just "meh". The best dish in my opinion was the corn appetizer, it was delicious. The vegan calamari was not appealing look wise and wasn't tasty, we were a group of 8 and we didn't finish it, not sure why it's labeled as the most popular dish. Plantains were good but not wow, same for the potatoes. The tacos were ok, I make better ones at home, maybe guacamole would make them better. Non alcoholic drink was tasty but pricey.

Our team visited Mayan Kitchen in Sunnyvale’s downtown on Murphy Avenue for lunch. One standout positive was their surprisingly large selection of vegan options, which can be hard to find in Mexican-style cuisine. This made it a convenient spot for a group with varied dietary preferences. We tried a couple of their specialty drinks , the brown rice horchata and the tamarind agua fresca both of which were refreshing and nicely balanced. For appetizers, the fried plantains were delicious and well-prepared. However, the other starters, like the chips and salsa, came in very small portions for the price. The same goes for the charred cauliflower, which tasted good but included only 5–6 pieces and felt significantly overpriced. As for the entrées, the general consensus from both vegan and meat eaters at the table was that the dishes were just okay and nothing particularly memorable or standout in terms of flavor or authenticity. The churros were another letdown: we received just one, and it wasn’t especially impressive, yet priced on the higher side. The highlight of the visit was definitely the friendly and attentive service. Still, while the ambiance and staff were great, the food felt overpriced for the portions and overall taste quality. Overall, Mayan Kitchen offers great service and an admirable range of vegan options, but the menu could benefit from more generous portions and stronger flavors to match its price point.
I recently visited Mayan Kitchen in Sunnyvale and would rate it 3 stars. The restaurant offers a commendable range of clearly marked vegan options across appetizers, small plates, and entrées, making it a good spot for plant-based eaters. However, the ambiance left much to be desired. The setting was not as inviting, and it was one of the least crowded places on Murphy Ave on a Wednesday night. The service was impressively fast, but it didn’t give off a fine dining vibe, which was somewhat jarring considering the high prices. For instance, charging $7 for chips and salsa, a common freebie elsewhere, seemed quite steep. Similarly, an $8 vegan taco felt overpriced. If you want them in home blue corn tortilla that is another 75 cents extra. The food was a mixed bag. The jackfruit taco and vegan meat taco were decent, but they lacked the flavor punch I was hoping for. Additionally, unlike most places, there were no extra sauces or salsas provided on the side with the tacos. On a brighter note, the black beans were well-seasoned and enjoyable, but the cilantro rice was a letdown, being overcooked and overly seasoned. In summary, while Mayan Kitchen has its strengths in vegan options and speedy service, the high prices and lackluster flavors hold it back from being my top choice for dining on Murphy Ave. I might not rush back anytime soon.
