Great experience! Very educational and fun. We had a range of ages from 14-70 and everyone loved it and wants to learn more.
I have taken lessons here and I highly recommend it. Dave works with you not only to teach you the fundamentals but also to help you get to where you want to go with your blacksmithing.
Absolutely amazing time the teacher was hilarious and skilled and made sure we all had the time of our lives!
I had a great time and learned a lot of useful information and techniques. I would highly recommend their classes
I am local bladesmith and like many people who began their journey to make knives and swords, I concentrated on some techniques and neglected others. Taking traditional blacksmithing with Iron Rhino has really helped me move to the next level.
His classes are amazing! Exceptional experience. David is excellent in adapting to exactly what you want to learn.
Really fun class. It was really easy to follow and they were really helpful. Overall was a really good time and I will be coming back.
David rocks. He's a delight to be around and I look forward to all my sessions with him! 10/10 take classes from this guy!
Thank you for a great service! The craftsman understood exactly what I needed and created a beautiful, unique piece for our home. Will definitely order from you guys again! Thanks!!
Very educational but still fun. David was very good at keeping it educational and fun so no one lost interest.
Excellent craftsmanship in a welcoming environment, not to mention the most bang per buck for private, one on one lessons.
Great community, great place to learn (and expand) metal work and blade smithing in a supportive and safe environment.
David did a great job. Met my expectations on design, production and time frame.
David is great, my son loves his lessons.
Great teaching...takes his time and makes it personal for the students
Learned how to make a knife with a railroad spike, it was an incredible experience!
Once you come and try it. You will be part of the Family not just friends.
Had a great time and learned a lot.
Great atmosphere and a wealth of knowledge
I surprised my fiance with "Date Night at the Forge" where our blacksmith teacher, Matt, guided us through making knives from railroad spikes. Matt made the night really fun and memorable for us. He was full of helpful information for 2 people who had never done any sort of forging, answered all of my questions, he came well equipped with dad jokes (which are my favorites), and didn't even get upset with us for saying, "That's a knife" an excessive amount of times. We ended the night with our own knives to take home and display which was really rewarding to know we helped make them. I was pretty hesitant about potentially hurting myself or possibly messing up the project, but Matt did an excellent job of being encouraging and reassuring. It's probably a lot scarier for a trained professional to let someone who is unsure of how to wield a hammer so close to their face! Setting up the appointment was a breeze. I called and left a message about my interest and what day I was looking for. Within 5 minutes David had called me back and not only walked me through scheduling the appointment, but he was very accommodating with making sure the time worked for us. He also gave me the low down on everything Iron Rhino has to offer. I recommend checking this place out for date nights or even just any of their classes. Everyone was friendly, professional, fun, and passionate.
Awesome experience! We were given a date night as an anniversary gift. Fabulous learning experience. Owner is personable and knowledgeable. We can't wait to add to our new skills in another class. Definitely would recommend!
Myself and my sons have been taking classes with David and I couldn’t be happier with our decision to train at Iron Rhino Forge. David’s focus on adapting his teaching approach based on students needs made all the difference. David’s understanding on how to teach students with special needs made the learning experience enjoyable and we learned the skills that will take us to the next step in our education. I would recommend Iron Rhino forge for blacksmiths of all levels.
David was awesome! I took the 6 class package and the individual attention was incredible. Many other classes from other blacksmiths have 5+ Students per class. David’s classes are 1 on 1 where I feel you can learn the most. Each session you make something then take it home. I’m hooked! Thanks David!
Just what I was looking for. I learned 10 times more in the 1st of 4 classes with Dave than in an entire 8 week large group class at the MAC. He's an excellent teacher and willing to customize classes to fit your goals whether your just starting out or need to work on more specific skills. He made it fun, was concerned about making sure I got what I needed out of the class and gave me a great foundation in technique. Will definitely be returning.
Bought a class for my husband! It's so fun and David is an awesome teacher. Definitely going to continue taking classes! The one on one sessions for 4 hours are such a great deal to learn from a master craftsman!
If you haven’t taken a class from this guy you absolutely need to… I met him at one of the festival shows and his work is spectacular. I’ve had him do custom jobs for me and I won’t ever go anywhere else :-)
I have enjoyed my time taking blacksmithing classes at Iron Rhino Forge. David is a master of his craft and an excellent teacher. His patience and attention to detail will do wonders when you are seeking to refine your skills.
Forging experience was great! Bought the beginners session for my boyfriend (who is obsessed with forged in fire). He loved every minute of it! David also let me sit in to watch the process, it was so awesome. Highly recommend for those who are interested in blacksmithing!
My husband, father-in-law, and I did the Railroad Spike Experience with Jacie. It was the most fun the three of us had together in a while! Jacie is super knowledgeable about the history of bladesmithing and the techniques we were using. She is an excellent teacher with a passion for what she does. I left feeling like I had learned something and will be able to use these skills again. We have the bug and cannot wait to come back!
I started looking for knife smithing classes and started with the classes at the Mesa arts center. I left a little disappointed as we did no forging. I then found David’s class and it awesome. You leave with the basics of blacksmithing and with a finished knife. Lessons are tailored to your goals and what you want to create. Can’t recommend this forge enough!
After an amazing 1 on 1 blacksmithing basics lesson with Avi, I convinced my wife to join me for a date night at the forge and it was a fantastic experience. We got to make customized iron hearts together and join them for a decorative piece in our home. The private lessons are amazing and Avi really gives you the tools and the techniques to start your journey into Blacksmithing, and the date night was just a perfect way to show my wife the joys of my new hobby!
Super amazing experience! We got the couples package and it was so fun! It was just us and the hilarious instructor! 1000/10!! We will be going there again!
I originally chose Avi at the Iron Rhino Forge because he fit my scheduling and price needs. I have continued with him because of his mastery, humor, and especially his enthusiasm and patience as a teacher. He teaches the deep knowledge not just the parlor trick projects (though he can if you want). He is involved in the smithing community and I have met several types of smiths and craftsmen including Jacie (Red Front Forge) who is a witty & knowledgeable swordsmith who is working with him to take her already impressive (she does beautiful custom swords) skills to the next level. In short a consummate teacher of beginner and accomplished alike.
David created a great learning environment and has an amazing depth of blacksmithing knowledge. I had a wonderful time experiencing the trade and learning from him. I will be going back for more classes.
I had a serious emergency with my camper tiedown being warped after an accident. Called and fixed same day. I spent more time driving there than it to for them to fix! The place is perfect top to bottom. Super professional and knowledgeable with a mom-n-pop shop sort of feel. It was a fun time watching them work and it came out perfect. Thanks. I'll be back with my giant knife!
David is a very patient teacher. I’ve been interested in blacksmithing for a long time and finally took the plunge and jumped in the fire. I highly recommend Iron Rhino Forge. But you better be ready to have fun cuz making something with your own two hands and learning a new skill is a very rewarding experience. Thanks David your awesome!! I’d give more stars but 5 is the limit.
David Goodman is a true teacher of blacksmithing. He makes the learning experience fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't believe that I could have found a better teacher. Thank you David.
My wife surprised me with blacksmithing lessons with David at Iron Rhino Forge. I learned a lot about the fundamentals of blacksmithing and was able to make my own knife along with other little projects that teach the fundamentals. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and highly recommend Iron Rhino Forge to anyone who is curious about blacksmithing!
Wonderful time at Iron Rhino! Took my wife for our anniversary and made two beautiful knives. A unique and memorable experience for us both
I'm very pleased with the classes I took here. I highly advise anyone looking for a patient teacher who will teach you the fundamental skills of blacksmithing to look no further. I can't wait to come back, and do some more classes in the near future.
I can't say enough good things about Iron Rhino Forge, Great place to take classes, learn from master blacksmith and bladesmiths as well as meet other makers around the area. If you are already a blacksmith or want to learn check out Iron Rhino Forge.
What an incredible experience, David is a great teacher and we learned so much. We Will definitely come back for more training in the blacksmithing course.
Completely unexpected positive and enjoyable. Excellent teacher! I would encourage anyone to take this class and journey into the historic art of the blacksmith!
I took my Girl Scout troop to forge knives out of railroad spikes. What a great time. ALL the scouts really loved it. Highly recommend.
We could not have asked for a better experience! We booked a group event for our company and everything was amazing. Great info, great entertainment, amazing customer service. We will be back!
I booked a date night for my husband and I to celebrate his birthday! Neither of us had ever done any type of blacksmithing so we knew it would be interesting! Holy cow, where to even start! I love the shop, it was comfortable (as can be, it IS a workshop for blacksmithing, but I’ve always enjoyed the workshop vibes) and it was surprisingly pretty cool inside, temperature wise. Our teacher (Is that the right word?) for the session was Justin. Justin is GREAT! Extremely patient, clearly loves what he does and teaching, and just so open and fun to talk to. While teaching us, we had fun conversation and it eventually just felt like hanging out with an old friend. Everyone at the shop was wonderful and kind! My husband and I learned a lot, had such a fun time, and left feeling really happy and excited about the great opportunity we had to learn something new. We made some fun pieces, learned a lot, and met some wonderful people. Overall, I’d highly recommend Iron Rhino Forge, to anyone! Whether you’re looking for a fun way to kill some time, learn a new hobby, or are already familiar with blacksmithing, this place is great. I hope that I get a chance to go back sometime soon!
I had no previous experience with blacksmithing but wanted to try it as a hobby. Avi took the time to speak with me in advance of our visit so he could find the best way for me and my husband to get an introduction to it. We went to Date Night at the Forge, and Mike was super helpful. We got invited back to Open Night at the forge and got more training with Avi and other smiths and had a great time. It's a laid back, welcoming community. Met two people from the show in our two evenings there. Will go back next time we're in Phoenix.
Amazing experience learning the basics of blacksmithing and making my first blade with David. He’s an amazing teacher. Very patient and fantastic at teaching in a way that makes sense. Sorry it’s taken me a while to get your review up. It was amazing honestly. Look forward to working with you again sometime.
Amazing experience! I don't highly recommend too many things, but this one is a must! The wife and I made the railroad spike knives. The instructor was very knowledgeable and funny. Small class size was nice and we learned a lot. Can not wait until the next class.
My son is taking lessons here and wants to get his level 1 certificatation. His instructors are all very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions even outside of class. They offer group lessons and private lessons. So far my son has made hooks, multiple knives, a tomahawk, and tools for blacksmithing. Right now they have 2 locations. One in Tempe and the other in Deer Valley.
Found iron Rhino online could not have been any luckier. I had been making some knife handles and wanted to make a knife. I called iron Rhino and talked with David he understood what I was looking for and we scheduled a class. He explained there is more to making a knife. We started with basic skills making some Hooks and some leaves and ultimately we were able to make a knife. David is truly great at his craft. Very patient teacher with great knowledge. He instilled a desire to make more things out of metal I am a snowbird and only here a few months a year. I cannot wait to come back this fall to start developing my basic skills and hopefully make a couple more knives. I visited also on a Tuesday night open Forge and watched everybody working on many different interesting projects. David you are top notch and I enjoyed thoroughly working with you and into the future. This is the place you want to go to be introduced to, and start working on the skills of blacksmithing. Hopefully I have many more years of enjoyment coming. Thank you Iron Rhino Forge
I had a great time learning at Iron Rhino Forge. My wife gave me classes for my birthday and I had a great time. With no prior experience, I was excited and eager to learn. Dave was a great instructor and was flexible with my busy schedule. I enjoyed each of the classes and I had fantastic work to show off. Great classes. I highly recommend them to anyone wanting to learn.
My wife organized a a group of my friends for the pocket knife making class at the iron rhino North location. There was six of us, our instructor was Matt. He was informative, well organized, and he was incredibly knowledgeable. We all had an amazing time and we all walked out with pocket knives that we cherish. I can't say enough about how much fun we had. I plan on coming back to take the intro to blacksmithing course.
I consider myself an intermediate Bladesmith but seem to struggle with a couple steps in the forging process. I was in the Phoenix area on a short vacation and contacted the owner of Iron Rhino Forge. After the discussion with David, he lined me up with a 8 hour private lesson with one of his instructors (Mike) that specializes in Bladesmithing. I don’t believe there is a better/quicker way to learn, than to watch a skilled craftsman demonstrate a technique and then offer suggestions as the student Attempts to replicate the procedure. I highly recommend Iron Rhino forge for instruction which is individually tailored to the skill level and experience of the student blacksmith. Thank you Mike , I enjoyed the instruction and look forward to practicing the New techniques back at the home Forge.. Rick
Recently attended a team building event at the forge and it was amazing! David and Rona were patient and informative with 1:1 instructions, David made the learning process fun and engaging while also being filled with information and knowledge. My husband has never been forging and he really took to it! We really enjoyed and will be back!
Booked the Railroad Spike Knife experience for my wife and I and had a blast! Our instructor Jacie was super knowledgeable and personable, helping us make a sweet pair of knives! Super fun date night, 10/10 would recommend!
Absolute legends. I took the intro to forging class today at their shop, and the instructor was super friendly, very professional, and went the extra mile to make sure we had a stellar experience. Very safe, highly recommend it, it’s a very unique experience.
Had an awesome time! Learned a lot from Dave. My husband booked a date night class for our 6 year anniversary. The iron anniversary! What a great idea right? Anyways, we had a blast and created a unique piece of art together. We will definitely be back!
I was gifted the knife making and intro skills class. I walked away with not only the how but also the why. The instructors go the extra mile to help everyone. They are clearly passionate. I highy recommend the team and the classes for anyone regardless of skill level.
I’m so glad I found David! He was kind, funny, and an excellent teacher. My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time at our date night lesson. Neither of us had experience, yet we caught on quick thanks to David’s explanations. David was also so sweet and understanding when we ran late, and he went above and beyond to make sure we were having fun. It was such a good time! We’re telling all our friends about him. Would highly recommend taking lessons with him!
Like many others my desire was fueled due to the show forged in fire. I found Avi at Iron Rhino Forge and took my first lesson and learned so much more! It’s not just banging metal it’s also a healing experience with a great group of people. Open forge night is great to learn and grow and meet others as well as the classes and demonstrations. It became something I needed not just wanted.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I booked a knife making/blacksmith class for my boyfriend and he had a beyond-amazing time! When I called to book/decide on a class, they asked a lot of really good questions; not just about skill level but what we’d like to have at the end of the class/session (for us, learning the skills was super important, but having a functional blade to represent the learning was important too). I really appreciated that Iron Rhino smiths didn’t mind if I hung out and watched for a bit (we’re from out of town, so it was nice to not have to sit at Starbucks all day)! There are so many great things to say about this experience!
What a great time! Went for a railroad spike knife making session as a bachelor party. The boys at Iron Rhino didn't disappoint. We all went through the same process of master/apprentice hammering on our knives which was perfect because none of us had any experience whatsoever. What's really cool is each of us walked away with very unique knives that we were all really proud of. As fun as the knife making was the inappropriate jokes and references between us and David made the whole experience all the more enjoyable. Because it was my bachelor party and we got along with Dave so well he was kind enough to make me a custom "sexy leg" bottle opener and gave me an Iron Rhino t-shirt for free. Highly recommend for a good time and a sweet souvenir.
Surprised my boyfriend with a class here for his birthday and we had a wonderful time! I booked the railroad spike knife experience and it was so cool. It was both our first times doing this but it turned out wonderfully. Our instructor David was very knowledgeable and sweet. And the rest of the crew was great too! I would recommend it :)
What an amazing experience! Booked the date night for our 6 year anniversary (year of iron) and we had so much fun. Justin was knowledgeable, kind, patient, and just all around awesome. Can’t wait to do it again sometime!
Attended an exceptional two-hour knife making class with David at Iron Rhino Forge. His expertise and passion for teaching were evident as he guided me through each step. I definitely got my money's worth and left feeling inspired. Highly recommend!
Had a great experience with Avi! He showed us how to make knives out of rail road spikes and we were able to participate. Very informative and he clearly knows what he’s doing. I went as a date and I’d recommend anyone goes, regardless if for a date or not.
This experience with Avi wasn’t just “Blacksmithing” it was truly educational, and I don’t say this lightly! Avi spent the time to get to know me and turned them things I learned in the past into the steps of forging. This allowed me to make the items below!

Iron Rhino Forge is absolutely amazing. I have two teens—one who is autistic and the other who is twice-exceptional (gifted and dyslexic). We have been attending lessons here for over 2 years, and the experience has been exceptional. David has created a workshop that is welcoming, inclusive, and truly centered on growth. Classes can be adapted to meet each individual’s needs, which has made a tremendous difference for both of my sons. They have grown significantly in their skills and confidence while working toward their ABANA certifications. Michael has been our main instructor, and he is flexible, kind, and extremely knowledgeable about the process. Our experience with both David and Michael has been incredibly positive—they are supportive, patient, and genuinely invested in each student’s progress. One of my teens has been so inspired that he is now developing advanced skills and selling the items he creates. David has also provided valuable mentorship in business and marketing, which adds another meaningful layer to the experience. This is not a transactional workshop where you simply drop your teen off to learn a skill. David has built a supportive community where people feel included, encouraged, and empowered to grow—not only as blacksmiths, but as individuals and entrepreneurs.
I had an incredibly positive experience with JC at Iron Ryno Forge, and I can’t say enough good things about the level of care and passion behind it. I originally reached out to JC after seeing her work on Forged in Fire, hoping she might be able to point me in the right direction to find a local forging teacher. What I received was so much more than I expected. JC personally took the time to call around, track down resources, and ultimately connect me with a knowledgeable forge instructor in my area, even though I’m all the way in Tennessee. She didn’t just send a quick message or link; she actually called me, and we talked for quite some time about blacksmithing, bladesmithing, and the craft as a whole. She generously shared advice on building a home forge, learning the fundamentals safely, and growing in the art of forging. Her forge is located in Tempe, AZ, but distance clearly doesn’t matter to her when it comes to helping others learn. She went far out of her way to support someone she had never met, simply because she cares deeply about the craft and the community around it. If you’re interested in bladesmithing, blacksmithing, custom blades, or learning how to forge the right way, this is a business run by someone who truly embodies the spirit of the trade. JC’s knowledge, kindness, and willingness to help are rare, and they left a lasting impression on me. I’m more motivated than ever to continue learning, and that’s entirely thanks to her generosity and guidance. I now have a mentor and friend I can call on while learning this craft. I can't recommend them enough. Truly, great people who will exceed your expectations.
I was so impressed by Avi and his entire team at Iron Rhino Forge! I learned so much about the skill set of forging and they made it fun along the way! Highly recommend for a corporate group who want to get hands on in a new way, OR for a fun date night/birthday with friends! Avi and everyone at Iron Rhino Forge are fun and relaxed while keeping you safe, too.
We booked recently for a corporate team building evening (families included). We were able to have our team of 5 plus their spouses and kids. We made camp mallow roasting forks-and everyone had a great time. David and Rona were great teachers! They had a lot of patience and gave every person personal attention tailored to each of us and our comfort and learning styles. We had so much fun that multiple of us are planning on a trip back to the forge soon. 10/10 would recommend for your team building or corporate event!

Amazing experience! I don't highly recommend too many things, but this one is a must! The wife and I made the railroad spike knives. The instructor was very knowledgeable and funny. Small class size was nice and we learned a lot. Can not wait until the next class.
