Compliments to the chef and wonderful waitresses! The chicken flautas on the sampler platter were awesome and the plate was plentiful, had enough left over to take home and eat Sunday. It's been a very long time since I've dined here, and it was beyond expectation! Thank you for a lovely experience.
Overall, OTB knocked it out of the park. My husband and I came in and we are both veterans. They showed us on the menu that the Pick 2 was free for veterans. Our watter, Jose, provided exceptional service. My only complaint is a fellow customer which had nothing to do with OTB staff. He was an old guy with long grey hair sporting a USMC hat. He was talking to the other two (young) people at his table and he was OBNOXIOUSLY loudly cussing about his pending charges and his political beliefs. I overheard the girl ask him how long he served and he got quiet and leaned in and said "I actually never served in the military believe it or not." I was utterly disgusted and told my husband it was time to go because I was out of patience and ready to go to battle with an elder, which I was taught never to do. Overall, I very much enjoyed my dinner. It's such a shame that some people have no clue about common courtesy and decency.
Tera is the best food was great gotta try the new sausa the best
It was a typical On the Border experience. Good food, not too bad on prices, really good chips and salsa. The reason I'm leaving this review is because my server Michelle that works in the bar, OR at least she does today. She is awesome!!! She's standing there looking at me while I'm ordering a to-go order for several people. Im changing things and adding things and canceling things and changing my mind. She never writes down anything. Just standing there smiling and answering my thousand questions. I was skeptical and I asked her "are you going to remember all of this?" She smiled and said "absolutely". And she did. She nailed the order. I was so impressed. So yeah, if you go here try to get Michelle as your waitress or sit in the bar area. She has an awesome personality with an addictive smile. Best Server Ever!!!Great job Michelle, I hope On the Border realizes that they have a true asset in you.
Kenzie is the best waitress! She is so friendly and made us feel so comfortable! Such a great person to work here! We really appreciate her’
Recently went with family for dinner and visit was well worth it. Food was awesome and our server Stacy made the experience that much better. With her attention to detail service, her patience even with the kids, and all around customer care, she has easily made "On the border" our new favorite place to eat. Atmosphere that is relaxed and friendly Service that is right on and Great food! Win win for everyone
Food was great! Service was pretty good. Watched as they made their own tortillas
Early lunch, beat the crowd by a few minures. Great service and folliw up. Check delivered moments after finishing eating. No delay on the rest of my day.
I went here with my mom, I loved it, good food, good people, and a amazing place to eat, especially their balcony with the colorful chairs. It was an exquisite place, the soft warm breeze of cool air blowing in your hair and you breathing in. Especially our waiter, she was amazing. Thank you Emily, you did your job very good and hope to see you again when we definitely come back again! Just remember go for a reason not just to eat but to spend time to make this time more enjoyable! Thanks you, Emily and On The Border!😄
I've been here multiple times and I've always had a good experience my favorite experience was last night when me and my fiance went there for dinner and we had the most lovely waitress her name is Vicky some call her grandma and you can tell she loves what she does she took the time to carry on a conversation and I can tell she works hard but cares for her customers yall go see Vicky
Stacy was amazing!!! The best server we have had in a LONG time! My son and I came in the other day and she instantly brought him chips and flour tortillas so he could munch. She brought out his food first and made sure his drink was never empty. She is the reason we keep coming back! Our food was amazing! It's always fresh and hot every time!
We came in pretty late to eat, our waitress Vicky gave us the absolute best service out of any restaurant I've ever really been at! She worked hard and fast to get our orders brought to us the fastest we have ever received our food, and everything was right! Didn't need to ask for more chips, they were already there! Our drinks stayed refreshed as well. Vicky/Grandma was the best 10/10
Last night we went to OTB, when we got there they were very friendly they sat us down as soon as we got there. We normally don’t go there just because the service is never great, but last night our server was amazing, I’m hoping I can add his name here (Jose Luis) he was super sweet not only did he get our orders right and he was very attentive to make sure we had everything we needed, but he also was having small conversations with us and my kids! When we left from there I told my husband that was the best service I have ever had there!!! We will be back for sure and ask for him!! Also the food was really great! We were very pleased.
The Queso is Absolutely delicious Just wish they had Pepsi instead of Coke now
I finally got to go back to on the border in Tyler and I got my favorite server Emily L. I absolutely love the homemade guacamole and queso and always enjoy the fresh tortillas. Even though Emily was busy, she always had time to come check on me, never making me wait for whatever I needed. If you want great service in top of delicious Mexican food, ask for Emily L’s section!!!
Wonderful the waitress was really good we never waited for refills she was great. Food was excellent and delicious so much food.
Our visit was as perfect as it can get. Max was our server and he saw to every need. He anticipated things we didn't think of and never forgot anything we asked for. My wife and I shared the beef fajitas this trip. They were very good. The chips were fresh and crispy as always, but I think the salsa tasted fresher than ever. Refried beans are rarely memorable to me, but theirs had a nice smoky flavor that was really satisfying. To add to it all, they were offering $2 margaritas. They didn't serve some watered down version, but their up-to-standard house 'ritas that are some of the best around (just a tad smaller). If they keep this up, other places around town had better watch out! Thanks for the great date night, OTB!
I wanted to leave an awesome review as we had a birthday dinner at the Tyler location this past week and MUST give a shout out to Pappas Brothers and their company acquiring the On The Border Restaurants! The menu change and food items were just like the Pappasitos menu items and all the food tasted fresh! Everything from the fire roasted salsa to fajitas (beef&shrimp) were cooked great along with the guacamole and queso. The floor manager Steven was very attentive and our waiter, Vicky explained the change of the menu as we were seated and took care of us. So glad to finally have here as the restaurants are really lacking in this region of Texas!
We had the Wed Fajitas Special. Chicken & Beef. Best we have had in a while. Skirt steak was seasoned and grilled to perfection. BIG strips of tender, moist and medium rare steak. Oh and my wife said the chicken was delicious. We will be back as soon as my scale gives me the ok.
We went for lunch to see if Pappas brothers had made changes. We were pleasantly surprised. Menu changes, salsa, chips were like pappasittas Fajitas were good and the cheese enchilada I ordered on the side was way better than when we went there a few months ago. Hopefully they will keep making On the Border more like pappasittas Tyler needs it
We have not been to On The Border for a long time. We found the menu offered many delicious looking dishes. We enjoyed what we ordered and will be back again. Wait staff was very cordial and attentive.
9/8/2023 update. Carne Asada was the best I've had. Thanks to our server, Angela, for a great evening! Starting with our server, Taylor, everything was great! I had the Ranchiladas (9 oz srip steak, 2 cheeses enchiladas, rice and beans), and my wife had the Chicken Enchiladas. We really enjoyed our evening!
Ive been told the chips and salsa were the exact same as the kind you can buy in the store, this isn't true. Luckily the chips and salsa they serve are still amazing, the tacos are a bit hard, the rice is pretty good, the big borduritto is massive and really good, I can't wait to go again and try the enchiladas
I always have a great experience here... Great food and great service... Things that keep people coming back. Jose Luis is one of the best servers I've ever had at a restaurant... He's one of the reasons why you feel comfortable and return over and over... Food is always solid as well... Definitely recommend this place when you're in the Tyler Texas area
We have dined in twice at this location. It is becoming a to go place to dine in for us in Tyler. Both time the foods were a delight. The waitresses were super helpful and friendly to provide accurate information about the menu and cratered the food to us exactly the way we requested as we have some dietary restrictions. The foods were reasonably spiced, not overly salty unlike other restaurants and very tasty. Their family fajitas platter is a must to try out! The atmosphere is family friendly.
Best Tex Mex in town. I know, I know its blasphemy to say its not a local place, especially in Tyler where its the staple meal. Note its not Mexican, its Tex Mex. Regardless excellent food everyime, a nice bar and an amazing location with space and colorful interior. Been a bunch. Great everytime
This place was amazing my wife and I got a good mixture of food during a busy dinner time and our server Carson was fantastically helpful and patient even though I talk to much! The salsa was even amazing here! Brisket tacos dos x fish tacos and more and all were super fantastic! My mouth is still watering even though I am stuffed full!
What a great place for lunch. The menu is far bigger than most other Tex-Mex restaurants in town. The portions are huge and the prices are great. Our waitress was so kind and attentive. We sat in the bar area and really enjoyed the atmosphere there. Definitely recommend dining at this location.

I'm not sure if I've changed or if their food changed. I just didn't care for it. To me, it tasted funny. Of course, it can be very difficult for a chain to compete when there are so many mom and pop homemade places to compete against. So know. It's probably me, not them. But the 4 star was my experience with their food.
The food was good. The waiter was little on the slow side. Orders were messed up, and he got them fixed, and drinks were slow to fill. Was an extremely slow evening . Hostess at front did ask if we would sit at the bar area due to being slow, so all waitstaff have equal tables. Was good to see Hostess looking out for fellow workers. I will at the on the border chips in the store are a lot better than what had at the table
Came New Year’s Eve. Waiter was not thrilled to be there. Not very friendly. Mostly just seemed annoyed to be there which is fair but in the service industry…shouldn’t affect service. Food was good. Had to walk to the bar area for a second drink, bartender was MUCH friendlier. Wish I had sat in that section 🤣
This chain welcomed us with baskets and bowls of the chips and salsa that can also be found on grocery store shelves. I happen to like the salsa, so I was a happy camper. The menu options include some good picks. I particularly enjoyed the carne asada with rice and grilled vegetables. My wife, who had the same steak in a burrito, was also very happy with her choice.
Had a really pleasant experience at On The Border in Tyler! We sat out on the patio, which was a lovely atmosphere for our meal. A big plus was the service – our server was excellent, very attentive and friendly throughout our visit. We shared the sampler appetizer, which was a good portion for the two of us. Drink-wise, the 'on the rocks' margarita was definitely a winner, very tasty! My girlfriend tried the frozen margarita, and while okay, it fell a little short compared to the rocks version – just didn't quite hit the mark. Overall, despite the slightly underwhelming frozen margarita, the fantastic service and the enjoyable patio experience made for a great visit. Would definitely return, maybe just sticking to the rocks margaritas next time!
After being seated it took a little too long before anyone came over to our table, but our waitress Jessica was awesome and we were glad we did not decide to leave before she got to us. We understand places get busy.
I love this place. The people ate great and the atmosphere is perfect for a nice, sit-down dinner. I had a tropical Margherita and it was good. I don't recommend the taco salad. But, the salsa, chips, and tortillas were amazing. They took away all the things I liked on the menu like their chile rellano and the green chile selections. But, we had a great time.
After a doctor's appointment, we stopped for lunch. Hubby had fajitas and I with my lunch carnitas enchiladas. Service was friendly and enjoyable in a clean restaurant that was pleasantly lit any day decorated for Christmas. It quickly became busy as trays of foods went by . A great place for large parties, families, date night, girls night and a place to meet up!
Loved it! They've closed all locations in Houston so it was an unexpected treat to find this location on my trip to Tyler. Sat outside and enjoyed a wonderful watermelon margarita.. food came out quickly and was as delicious as I remember it. Chips were thin and crispy, salsa was fresh. Had the shrimp Tacos and it was soooooo good!!! It's a bummer I have to drive all the way to Tyler to get great Tex Mex. I hope they reconsider reopening a location here in Houston.

I ordered the fajita salad. The small portion of chicken was dry and the lettuce was brown. At my house we throw out brown lettuce
I enjoyed the decor and vibe of the place. They have a charming courtyard outside, in the front. We enjoyed the salsa and chips. The salsa has a bit of kick to it that slowly builds, but it doesn't take away the flavor. The chips are crisp and plentiful. I ordered a protein bowl and it was good! Very flavorful and filling.
I feel like I paid more than the quantity of food that was provided. I got the mixed chicken and beef fajitas and was told the price was 17 dollars and some change. When I arrived to pay, the price was 24 dollars and change. The bartender waited on me as the to go order person went home shortly after taking my order. Now the bartender did an outstanding job and was super kind. On my way out, after paying, a manager asked me about my experience. I mentioned to him the price descrepancy, he volunteered to make it right after stating the to go person did not ring it up correctly. I declined the offer. I feel like that after a price is communicated, and it was an error made by the restaurant, the original price should have been honored originally. I understand mistakes happen, so a few dollars are not the issue. It is Moreso, that for 24.00 I got four chicken fajita strips and four beef fajita strips. It just seemed light to me.
We we're seated pretty quickly but out waiter took too long getting there. Overall, the service was very slow and we could have been sitting at any of the other open seats than the one right across from the family with noisy toddlers and a fussy baby. I mean I get it, I have kids too but that's not atmosphere we'd wanted. We were wanting a break from kids for an evening.
Excellent service. The Chips and salsa were frequently filled, fresh and tasty. The food was bland, and not hot. My husband ordered a steak bowl. The sauce over the meat looked disgusting. I had the soup and quesidilla, both were tasteless. The soup might have been good but the large amount of rice absorbed the flavor. I've never had white rice in tortilla soup.
Second time eating here. Food was okay. Server was very friendly and efficient. Not many people were there and it took 30 minutes to get my fish tacos from the kitchen. Fish had been chopped up to make sure it was cooked through. Not very fast on service or being able to pay your bill. I had to get up and walk through the restaurant to find the waitress hanging out with em other servers in a corner.
The food was satisfactory. Service was good. I had the cheese enchiladas. Dessert was great. Husband loved good food.
walked into restaurant no one there to sit you. Waited at least 5 minutes. It was ok will try it again. Hope it will be better. Manager was very friendly he would be why I return. Appetizer was good fresh chips. Not impressed with the enchiladas they were small and not very filled. The queso on top wasn't impressive I'd rather have the red sauce with cheddar cheese melted. Wouldn't order that again
We have not eaten at On the Border for many years so we were excited to eat here. However, we were mildly disappointed. The Barbacoa tacos were really good but the skirt stark that came with the cheese enchilada plate was disgusting. It was so rare and difficult to chew. Such a disappointment!
Upon walking in we were promptly greeted and then seated. Immediately our waiter came and asked our drink order and brought us chips and salsa, which were delicious. The menu I was not super impressed by. Perhaps if I would have been hungrier. There was nothing for the smaller appetite. I ended up ordering a side of beans and just had that with the chips and salsa. Reasonably priced and great atmosphere.
Bring your own salt shakers, and be prepared to ask for tiny servings of margarine. Our server was in a big hurry wherever she was going, but whatever it was was not to refill our drinks or salsa. Apparently the manager who holds the keys to the napkin vault was REALLY busy, because they were very protective of those. Our food got to us in a pretty timely manner, albeit the server just dropped it on the table and left without asking if we needed anything with it. I have to say I enjoyed the atmosphere of intrigue, as my wife and I were always fascinated by questions of, "Where did she go?" And, "Did they close and forget to tell us?" In conclusion, if you really enjoy the company you're with and don't want to be constantly bombarded by friendly servers annoying you with questions like, "Can I get you a refill on that?" You will absolutely love this establishment.
The most enjoyable part of the meal was the service our waitress was awesome. The fajitas well to be honest had no flavoring. William George sells better fajita meat than what they're serving and it's already seasoned and everything. Also some of the pieces were rather pink and a little bit bloody. Cheese dip typical queso Velveeta melted nothing special. Chips were great. Beans and rice mediocre . Sorry guys I'm still trying to wonder what keeps this place in business I highly doubt it's the food it must be the service in the alcohol. I really didn't want to complain what we are there because the waitress we had was so nice she was doing everything she could to keep up. Sorry gang we won't be coming back.
Order was super late and nachos were cold. Heated up queso and it was great. Guacamole is always fine cold. No offer of refund and will not order again. Super sad b/c this used to be one of my favorite restaurants .
Hello, my chips smelled stale and were full of grease as if someone dipped old chips in grease to make them hot. My chimi was not fried and my sauce was missing. Please bring back the good quality food you used to serve. I used to eat at OTB often but due to the last few visits being subpar I patron another Mexican food restaurant. I ordered today hoping it would be better. Sincerely A weekly Mexican food eater
Water and tea tastes like mud. Food is not as good. Server was great that was the only good thing today.
I wasn't impressed with the food and the service was terrible. We had a group of 10 so tip was added on which was fine but then the waiter decided that 18% was not enough so he added even more to the tab. I have to give th manager credit when he found out he refunded everything, the whole tab. I don't know since I don't live in that area, but I would assume that waiter got fired.
we decided to come eat here as usual because we Love yalls food and always have great service and even this time we had great service but cannot say the same about great food. We where met with a changed menu. They didn’t have what my husband usual orders infact they got rid of half their menu. The tacos I usually get were falling apart from grease and had barely any flavor and the new food item my husband ordered had no flavor. we were very disappointed and probably won’t be coming back. We miss yalls old menu. The only reason I gave 2 stars is because yall still had the sopapilla and they were delicious!
The food was good and the service was great. However, my bill was $62 including the tip but my card was charged $65. I know $3 isn't much, but it is the principle of it and is bad/sloppy business. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt that it was unintentional and I hope the extra went to the server. (It is also odd that I was given an orange felt tip pen to sign the check, which is why I took a picture in the first place.) If I ever go back, I will definitely pay with cash.
Well, I wanted to go down memory lane so I choose to dine here, alone, tonight. Mistake? Some would say, yes. Me, nah, as I'm likely never to return. Honestly, I see a soon to be end to this Tyler OTB era. I feel they'll be gone within 6 months. If I'm wrong, good for them, maybe they can survive in Tyler. I don't believe so. It's a Saturday night, 7:45pm...on the corner of Broadway and the Loop. It should be packed, or at least full. There were 5 cars out front. That should have been a sign, but I'm generally optimistic. I sat at the bar. I'm the only patron in the bar area, period. Sad. Now there's several, I'm assuming wait staff sitting behind me (likely because there's no tables to work). They're just watching TV. Service, eh. The kid (bartender) is super nice (Cyrus), and he managed to stay busy making the occasional drink for the few tables out in the restaurant, or cleaning to back bar. It took several minutes to get salsa refilled, something that should be done without me asking and almost immediately. I like the kid, so manager...don't blame him. He's likely not well trained. But, I liked him enough that he should definitely keep what seems to be his first job, at least until you close your doors for good. BTW, it's now 8:30, on a Saturday night, and he's already cleared everything from the bar...the bar mats, put the cherries away, etc. Why? Because I'm the only one here? Sad. Food, well, eh...again. Now I see why it's empty. They no longer have much of the beloved OTB food from the 90's through 2010's. They recently changed the chips, bad choice IMHO. They changed the sangria in the margaritas, it's bland. My normal order of Queso Flameado is no longer on menu. I asked, they can make it, yay! I received it, it's mostly already chewed up beef fajita meat and sour cream. I believe there was at least 23 shreds of grated cheese...ok, maybe I'm exaggerating...but there's a photo. 🤷 The price, I'm too disappointed to properly comment...or better yet, just ready to go home. Oh wait, I was just joined by a dad and his little 5 year old kid on his tablet...beside me, at the bar. Why? I might sound shallow, but I'm at the bar in an empty restaurant and I guess I'm a little over this place. Maybe I'm picky. Sure. But I think the fact that hardly anyone is here, that speaks more than I can. Honestly, it's just really sad. I almost wish this place was just still Spaghetti's (does anyone remember that, here in this location...early to mid 90's?). I won't return, unless I see or hear of something better in the future. There's simply a ton of better options in the area. 😢
My mother and I were in town shopping and decided to eat here for dinner. Our server was very attentive and friendly. I ordered a drink and my mother ordered a margarita, mine tasted like straight tequila and hers was super strong as well. When we were done eating we asked the server if we could finish our other drinks on the patio outside; my mom asked if she could smoke a cigarette out there or if we’d need to step away, he said we could definitely smoke on the patio. A couple minutes later the manager comes out and says we can’t smoke to which my mom replied “Okay sorry the server told us we could” then the manager walks of saying “No no no” very disrespectfully. I went in to leave our empty glasses at the bar and on the way out I told the manager “Thanks again, we would have left earlier if we knew y’all were closed” (it was 15 minutes after closing time) he stays looking at his phone and says “ yeah yeah” i don’t know if he was having a bad day or something but that’s not my problem and is no excuse for the level of unprofessionalism displayed. Would have left a better rating if it weren’t for that manager. If he wants to avoid situations like what happened with the cigarette he should have no smoking signs on the patio, oh or better yet properly train his employees 😭😭 We felt very unwelcome at that point so we will definitely not be returning.
Food was pretty decent, and service was about average. Server had a smile and was competent while performing her duties. I'd recommend the restaurant strictly because it was good average service and a pretty tasty meal. Meal was delightful minus the fact that my steak meat was way overcooked, and just a touch on the hard side when it came to chewing through it. On the other hand, my tacos AL carbon was a good meal. My wife had the chimichanga and said it was very good. My reasons for the 2 star rating are as follows: #1- the handicapped parking is off to the left of the front entrance and quite a further walk than it would be if those spots were directly in front of the entrance. Instead the "to go" parking spots are directly in front of the entrance. REALLY?? This is not desirable for my current situation since I'm handicapped from an accident at work. #2- the young lady who seated us ended up being our server, which was fine, except she sat my crippled butt at a table that off balance and super wobbly. To fix the wobblyness someone tried to cram napkins under 2 of legs. This didn't even come close to working. I almost fell while trying to get up using the table for support. So without the restaurants approval, I grabbed our belongs and set up on a different table. Give OTB a try. It's a great place except for the reasons I stated above, and if you sign up for the queso club, you get free queso for a year. Who doesn't love free food. I know this fat boy does.

Had the worst waiter. Asked for butter for hot sauce because it was super hot. They didn't have any. Had to ask several times to get refills on drinks. The waiter didn't even bring the food. Another waitress did. Never checked on us. Like I said had to flag him down to get refills several times, but only got 1 refill after we ate. Worst service I have had in a long time
Use to eat at this franchise when going to classes in different places. Was my first time in Tyler, I won't bother going back. The service was horrible, trying to get more tea or water was like asking for gold. The hot sauce was delicious but it was even hot for me and I can handle some hot sauce.. no squeeze butter, nothing milder to offer, one of the wife's quesadillas was filled with nothing but grilled onions.. so I have had way better for way less money and much better service!!! I didn't even order as it was so high, at my wife's salad with its one little cup of ranch dressing that I rather not had but wasn't offered anything else.. salad had a few other veggies but mostly lettuce, which my wife can't eat anyway..
First let me say that this is only the second time I have ever written a review. The first time it was after eating at the Coyoacan Mexican Restaurant in Valdosta, GA, where I had the best steak fajitas I have ever had and the service was fantastic. Unfortunately now I am writing a review for the worst steak fajitas I have ever had. I have been visiting from out of town for a few weeks. Because I enjoy steak fajitas I have been visiting different Mexican restaurants in town. Today I thought I would try out On the Border. My order was supposed to be ready at 6:09 p.m. I showed up right at 6:09 p.m. and I was directed to the take out counter. There I waited for a few minutes as no one was around the bar area. After waiting a few minutes I went back to the front and spoke to the rep that was at the front entrance. She came and was able to give me the food. I went to my car and started eating the fajitas. Immediately I noticed they were cold. Then I noticed that the meat was very tough and very chewy. ( I later noticed the same complaint about the fajitas from a different reviewer). Unfortunately I did not finish all of the fajitas; they were just very unpleasant, so I ended up throwing the rest away. Needless to say, it was a great disappointment, especially considering that I paid over $20 for the meal. I was tempted to take the rest of the meal back into the restaurant and try to get a manager to taste the fajitas themselves but I know they would not have. So if you are like me and you are visiting from out of town and you are looking for a good fajita dinner, I suggest that you look elsewhere. I gave the review two stars instead of one, in the area of "Service" because I wanted to give credit to the young lady that helped me get the cold meal even though it was not her job to do so.
I rarely leave a negative review, but today's experience was among my worst at a restaurant. It took almost 20 minutes to get our waters and kid drinks, over 25 minutes to get our bar drinks and 37 minutes to get our food. Our server was struggling with all 3 of his tables. It was hard to watch and even more frustrating to live. Even worse was he was snarky about the whole thing. We also watched the manager chatting it up with a table across the restaurant for an extended period rather than circulating to see if the other tables were satisfied with their experience. We will never be back again.
Our waitress Evalynn was not good. She was very rude and brought our frozen margs melted. We asked for a salt shaker and she never brought it. We never got drink refills or chip refills. She was nowhere to be found almost the whole time. When our food was brought out, my tacos were like a watery beef with flavorless rice. It was just terrible. I will probably never go to another on the border. Yucky food and terrible service.
Wes is an absolute nightmare of a manager. We had a party of 20 come in and they had one server on our table and they kept sitting him other tables while he was overwhelmed. We never got refills and we sat there for 3 hours waiting. All the while Wes (the manager) was walking past our table refusing to make eye contact or help out the server by seeing if we needed anything or comment on the extremely long wait. (45+ bar drinks and 2+ hour food) When we finally flagged him down he laughed and scoffed in our faces and said they don’t take tables this big? We had a reservation? And then just walked away talking under his breath. Our food was Luke warm and no tortillas for fajitas, missing items and etc. waited another 45 mins for tickets with no discount or comments about the situation. It was an absolutely appalling experience. The entire table was filled with servers/bartenders and restaurant managers so we are super forgiving when it comes to these situations but it was handled very poorly.
Just left OTB Walked in and asked for a table on the patio. There were people out there but the young man said the patio is now closed as the server is going home. It’s 545, really. No one can walk through a door so we can eat out in the nice weather. I said if cant eat outside we will go somewhere else. It didn’t even phase the host. He just let us walk out. I guess they don’t need customers or money even though the parking lot was completely empty. We just got to Javi’s to a patio table facing the pond with fountains. Much better view here anyway. We will not be back even though we used to eat there frequently.
Do not order delivery from On The Border. We used Door Dash to order, placed the order at 6:30 p.m., was given an ETA of 7:00 to 7:10. Over the course of the next 90 minutes, the ETA on our order kept getting push back. Three different drivers stopped at the restaurant to try and pick up our order only to be told that it wasn't ready, all three waited but eventually gave up. At 8:00 p.m., 90 minutes after the order was placed, and confirmed by On The Border, with the order still not ready to be picked up, I canceled the order. I don't know how it could take over 90 minutes to prepare two entrees. I am left to assume that the staff of On The Border simply didn't care if the delivery got made or not.
I'm usually quite forgiving when it comes to dining experiences, but my recent visit to this restaurant was far from satisfactory. Our evening transitioned into a nightmare once our primary waitress ended her shift for the day. She was absolutely lovely. Ending on a sour note with the new waiter, who had just started his shift, asked us for our method of payment when we requested the check. We informed him that we would be paying via QR code, a method accepted by many other establishments such as Chili's and On The Border. At which point, the waiter brought the receipt with the code on it for us. However, the real disappointment came as we were leaving. We were confronted by not one, but multiple waiters accusing us of not paying our entire bill. This was not only embarrassing but also completely uncalled for. We had paid our bill in full, as we always do, and to be accused of such a thing in a public setting was deeply unsettling. The lack of communication and trust between the staff and customers at this restaurant is BEYOND alarming. It's a shame because the food was decent, but the service left a lot to be desired. I'm afraid I cannot ever recommend this restaurant based on this experience.
Love the food. Love the bartender, Tara. She is a badass. So ver disappointed that happy hour got moved to 4. This is my place to go to after a hard day of work. Loved that it was at 2pm. Then it got moved to 3 pm which was a stretch for me. Now you moved it to 4 and that puts me and my friends out. We will have to go to another happy hour. So very disappointed!!! 😩
92$ for two of us in my family to never receive what we ordered and never get to eat. What we did receive was cold, dry and so tough that we couldn't chew or cut it even with a steak knife. The one piece that we attempted to eat was without a plate because even after us both asking for one (twice to the waitress and once to the manager) they were not brought to us until after everyone else in our family had eaten and was ready to go. The rice was hard and under cooked, as well as cold. Both the meat and the rice had zero flavor. The manager took off the price of the meat (that wasn't even what either one of us ordered), yet we still had to pay for 2 orders of rice and 2 fajita set ups (that again wasn't what we ordered). The meat that they brought for us both, had ZERO vegetables. It was simply dry meat on ONE plate for the two of us when we ordered two different meals! Neither one of us ever received a refill on our drinks as well. I have never been so disappointed and mad enough about the service I've received to write a review, much less a bad review. But for me to pay 92$ and two of (six of us total) us leave without eating, to have to go somewhere else for dinner is absolutely NOT acceptable!
Let me start by saying I love On The Border Restaurant, my most favorite restaurant, and I’ve been going to the one in Tyler since it opened, as have many members of my family. We live in Athens, so our choosing to drive 45 minutes to come to this restaurant tells you how much we love On The Border. We have almost all of our family celebrations there, usually a party of 7-20 people. Our check this time was $200, after tip, and this was one of our small groups. Last night, we were there celebrating my grandson’s 13th birthday at his favorite restaurant. We arrived around 7PM and I was greeted, after about 5 minutes, by the bartender. I told her we were a party of 7, why we were there, that we needed some extra space as we had gifts, balloon bouquets and a cake. Her answer was we only have 2 servers so your choices are in the bar or in the middle, where there weren’t any tables available to accommodate us. The patio and the other half of the restaurant were empty but were not open as they appeared to be ready for closing. She left to go talk with one of the servers in the bar, which I knew, and he was quite surprised that she was wanting to seat us in an already full bar that he alone was serving. When she returned, I explained to her again our situation, but she seemed uninterested in serving us or accommodating us. She said it’s going to be this table, that was dirty, and that’s all she had. She made me feel like she would just rather us leave as they were not going to “dirty” an area that was already clean and ready to close. They sat us in the bar area, at a bar table for 6 in the corner, a wall on one side, with a chair on the end. Nowhere to set our gifts or cake, much less food for 7 people, 3 teenagers and 4 adults. She said we could use the floor to set the gifts and cake, in front of the door going out to the patio, as it wasn’t open. The only thing positive about the meal was we had a good server, Matt, who I’ve known a long time, and he did the best he could considering he had at least 6 other tables. I thought surely, as she watched us unload all the balloons, gifts and cake and set it on the floor, crowd around a table in the corner, that she would offer us a different table, one that was 6 feet away in the closed room but with plenty of room for us. SHE DID NOT! We did our best to not let it take away from our celebration but it was difficult! I’ve never been so disappointed in a wait staff member. Absolutely ZERO interest in customer service. I very seldom write a review, especially a negative one about my favorite restaurant, but I wanted someone in their staff to know what happened, as I’ve never been treated that way at that restaurant. There didn’t appear to be a manger there, and if there was one, shame on them for seeing that kind of service and allowing that situation to go on. I know this is NOT typical service for that restaurant so it’s not going to affect my returning to it. However, if it had been my first visit, I would have walked out and never gone back. Yes we could have walked out, created all kinds of havoc, asked to speak to a manager, but we didn’t because this is where we wanted to be. My hopes in writing this review is the right people read this and appropriate actions are taken to make sure this doesn’t become the kind of service a patron can expect when they choose to have dinner at this restaurant. I don’t want a gift certificate, free food, refund, nothing….I just don’t want to see this restaurant close because of the kind of customer service we received last night becomes the “normal”! DO BETTER!!!
WORST RESTAURANT EVER!! Service was very rude & refused to move us to a different table when we asked to sit somewhere else due to the lightbulb being out & not being able to read the menu with my grandma. Afterwards the waitress continued to sit & take other couples orders after we were the first ones there. The food was very disgusting & cold. My grandma went home & was very sick to her stomach never coming back again I hate leaving bad reviews but this was the worse restaurant experience I’ve had hopefully their service gets better.
The food was nasty, and we found hair in the food won’t come back.
My order was placed wrong and I contacted the manager BO, who informed me there was NOTHING HE COULD DO ABOUT IT! HE WOULD NOT MAKE THE ORDER OVER WITHOUT CHARGING ME ANOTHER 16.99 for nachos. THIS IS THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER HAD THE MISFORTUNE OF EVEN CALLING IT “ CUSTOMER SERVICE “ I ‘D RATE THIS MANAGER AS A 1/2 STAR IF THIS SITE WOULD LET ME!
Poor experience, poor management and server. It’s a shame to mess up an order, offer to fix the disaster only to make things worse. So I ordered the fajitas, when my food came out they had charred even the meat to a crispy black. I simply asked for it to be remade since I am not a fan of charcoal.. Apparently this upset the server and the kitchen staff because what I received was raw vegetables and the closest description to portobello jerky. Not satisfied with this visit and I would suggest trying another place to eat.
5 years ago this is what I viewed them as: Waiters were awesome food came out fast and hot. Had the lunch special. Now it's a 1: I will not be coming back, I ordered the sampler plate, all I asked was no jalapenos. It included nachos, quesadilla, and taquitos. There was no seasoning, no salt or pepper on the table they brought me some salt packets. No napkins other than the one rolled up in the fork and knife. Our waiter was assigned to the opposite side of the restaurant while the three waiters where we were sitting had no one. This was the worst experience we've ever had, then the waiter had no idea what the menu or specials were. I asked for an alcohol drink but he didn't know what was available. He never asked if we wanted to use our rewards program. When I asked the manager why we were seated so far from where our waiter was assigned he said look at how busy we are and it's your fault you didn't ask about the rewards program you should have known better. I explained I haven't been here in a couple of years and this was why. He said oh well don't come back if you don't like it. No care or understanding.
Food is decent but beware of to-go orders. Almost without exception, you will find they have shorted your order on something significant, whether that’s chips or the $10.00 “bowl” of queso you paid for and tipped on. It has happened so often, maybe it’s intentional. Sell food you don’t provide can rack up profits. Who knows.
I went to the restroom and notice this man not washing his hands without soap and turns out he was one of the managers. I reported him to my waiter because he was over there handling food with no gloves along with other workers. Then my friend notice a bug in her drink. After that it was time to go. I will never eat at this location again.
My son and I were out having a lunch meeting. He ordered steak nachos and I ordered empanadas. The nachos had the steak meat and my son bit into one and I heard a crunch where he bit into a bone, the meat had bones on it that we showed the manager Edgar and all he said was oh yes we are butchering our own meat in the back ourselves now and he'd let cooks know. I will not recommend this location to anyone and I will never eat here again. The customer service provided by manger was like he disregarded us as paying customers. Our waitress provided more interest than the manager.
We asked for guacamole without jalapenos, they said they would make it fresh. Then they came back and said, "well it only has a small amount of jalapenos so that should be okay" but we said no, we were going somewhere else. And they brought the manager out to say "but it's only 2 tablespoons of jalapenos in 4 lbs of avocados", which is still not jalapeno-free guacamole, so we left. But they just made a really big deal out of the fact that we needed no jalapenos in our food.
My wife and me went to On the Border for lunch. It was very slow, our waitress had two tables, including ours, but she was never around. She came around when I was completely out of coke for awhile. She asked if i wanted a refill, I said yes and I asked for more salsa. She brought our meals but no salsa, and she never did. After we finished we waited for her to come by. When she did I asked for the check, fifteen minutes later she brought it. I wasn't happy at this point, we still were christmas shopping. I was also going to buy a OTB gift card for my daughter, but after my experience I chose not too. I will not go back there again because of the poor customer service we received.
Took my husband out to eat for early Father’s Day since the weekend of Father’s Day well be bussy I order enchiladas they were good and he ordered steak fajita all the veggies were burnt he also burned his finger of how hot the wood and plate were we asked for different veggies so we moved the meat from the platter and we talked to the manager West and showed him the burn meat and veggies and he said “oh it isn’t burnt” clearly in the pictures is burnt the manager West very was rude and didn’t really care for our complaint never going back I see why it was empty not much people there today .
Do NOT recommend this restaurant. We were greeted with a friendly hostess and seated immediately. As the restaurant was not busy. You will find out why later in my review. Our server came to our table immediately. AJ was our server. The food arrived quickly to our table after placing our order. AJ was funny, friendly and attentive. Here is the bad part. The food was awful. We shared combo beef and chicken fajitas. The chicken was dry with no flavor. The beef tasted like regurgitated chewed up beef. The rice was super dry and not warm. It tastes like last week's rice. The rice and beans I couldn't eat. Didn't even attempt the beans. Husband ate some of the rice and beans, what he could. We got maybe a teaspoon of shredded cheese for 2 people eating fajetas. Maybe a table spoon of sour cream and guac. The quac had zero seasoning. It didn't get eaten. Tortillas, oh my. They were in a wad. It looked like they grabbed them in their fist and mashed them all together. They were rubbery and hard to chew. Salsa had a somewhat good flavor with a spicy kick. But it was like water. Didn't eat the salsa. Over all the food was edible, but it was awful! Didn't complain to our server. But I hate sending food back bc you never know how it will come back to you. We just ate what we could and left. Not many people were there when we arrived. Not many were coming in when we left. After eating there I know why. Quality of food can not compare to other Mexican Restaurants in Tyler. Definitely will never come back to this restaurant.
Our food was burned we told the waiter and all he did was he said he was going to let someone know. We paid $94 for burned food. I don’t give this place not one star, the food has no seasoning , and the guacamole live was salty! I would not recommend this place. We had to tell our waiter to have our flour tortilla cooked again, he took them back and put them back on the drive the same ones and then brought them back. All the food was burned, the beans were dried because the food was left on the grill or burned too long.
