Spent a fantastic afternoon in the garden with bbq and live music. Nicole and Simon were superb hosts having recently taken over. Dee and Justine keeping the place running like clockwork as always. Nice to have such a chilled atmosphere on a sunny day. See you all soon.
We have lived in the area for about a year. Slowly working out way through the local pubs and restaurants. This place is right at the top of my list. Lovely location, Stiegl on tap(!), and the food is fantastic. Wood fires, a pub dog, hugely helpful and friendly staff. What more could you want? I am slightly reluctant to post this as it means it will be harder to get a table and I want this place all to myself.
What a great place, my first visit. Lovely casoulet with confit du canard and also nice local beers on offer. The front bar was nicely bustling, however the restaurant at the rear where we are was perfect for conversation over dinner
I first ate here 4 years ago and left the pub a 5 star review although I can't remember what I ate on that visit. This past weekend I ate several meals over 2 days and enjoyed everything which I thought was exceptional value (ok so I do live in London, but even so!) Despite being really busy with all the outside tables full, the staff were efficient & lovely. If you're coming on a sunny day I would recommend booking ahead.
A fantastic local pub, with a great atmosphere and delicious food. We hosted a significant birthday at the pub and everything was excellent from start to finish. The large numbers didn’t faze them at all and the staff couldn’t do enough to help. Highly recommend The Star. Thank you!
Visited as a family of 5 whilst on holiday in the area. The pub is lovely and in a beautiful village. We were welcomed warmly and the service was excellent throughout. The food was brilliant and catered really well for GF. The children's menu had great options and the fish and chips was very generous. All of our meals were excellent quality and and we would absolutely recommend. Thanks for having us!
I live locally to Waldron and have been going on and off to The Star for several years. Now under new management, it has been transformed!! Attentive staff, superb food from a great menu and finally: decent wines, and of course the usual wide selection of good ales. Really buzzy and busy, love the atmosphere! Totally cemented as my new go to local! This pub is going places! ❤️❤️
For transparency, we came here after a funeral at the church across the road, and there was a prepaid buffet lunch provided. The food was very good indeed and the serving team were all excellent. One of the less mobile guests had a bit of an issue in the loo and the staff team could not have been better. So...great staff, great food, good choice of drinks - 5 stats all round and well worth a visit if you are in the area.
I booked for 20 guests to have a buffet lunch after my wifes funeral. We wer catered for perfectly. The pub was very busy but nothing was to much trouble for the staff. The buffet was amazing more than enough for everybody .i highly recomend this very popular pub.
I have known this pub for fifty years. When I went a few years ago, it didn't look like it was going to stay open much longer. I was so pleased to see it not only open, but thriving when I visited in August 2025. Now under new ownership and the pub was lively, friendly and has an excellent choice of food. I wish the new owners every success. It is advisable to book a table in advance. A proper East Sussex pub.
We popped in for a pint while staying at the local campsite the other weekend, six hours later we rolled out having had a delicious meal, live music, lovely beers and lots of chats with the locals. The staff and landlord are incredible friendly and welcoming - this is truly the heart of the village and the new ownership is proving very popular with locals and guests alike - I cannot recommend it enough. Most of us had the Fish Board which was good value and delicious - I loved the BONGO ale - the staff were very patient as we deteriorated after 4-5 pints and staggered back to the campsite - our first camp without children to keep us in check - we could have stayed in the Star all night. Thank you for your hospitality.
Visited for Sunday lunch, busy, but was seen to table very quickly. Menu is different, very varied and remarkably reasonable, i had sardines and wife, roast pork....excellent service and presentation and very tasty. I have a very restricted diet ,but staff were very accommodating and friendly, will definitely return.
My sister has recently moved to the village- and six of us met at the pub for dinner last night- we were made very welcome and the food and service was great - I highly recommend the grilled plaice and clam tagliatelle- delicious
What a hidden gem Went there on Saturday and they were not taking walk ins for food as they were so busy . Not surprised the atmosphere was fantastic and clearly a popular locations for locals and others . Simon, the landlord was exceptional , made a point on the Saturday of making sure we had everything we needed and talked us through the menu and bookings . We then booked for today. Today , An elderly customer become exceptionally unwell and the 999 responded on the phone was more then unhelpful but with the support of all the staff at The Star, who went above and beyond another customer who was a doctor stepped in and was amazing supportive . A massive heads up to Justine , who works in the restaurant , totally above and beyond to the unwell customer but making sure everyone else was ok . Our experience Exceptional service and the food was exceptional Dont let this little gem go off your radar , well worth the visit Can’t recommend them enough , we are will definitely be going back
We attended an event here on Saturday and ate there in the evening. Staff were very friendly and attentive and they catered for my Coeliac daughter very well, with several gluten free options all cooked separately with a good knowledge of the need for no contamination. Fabulous old pub and huge beer garden- highly recommend!
We had a wonderful Mother’s Day lunch at this lovely pub. Great food, really good selection of alcohol free beers, brilliant service. Child friendly, dog friendly. Just very lovely and tastefully decorated and dressed 👊 highly recommend. We will be back often!
Friendly staff , amazing atmosphere with great bands Lovely country pub with plenty of parking at th rear
My friend and I went to the recent BBQ and Jazz band in the garden. The weather was lovely and so was the event. My halloumi and salad wrap was delicious, my friend also enjoyed her chicken and salad wrap, a good price as it included entertainment. The owners are very friendly and engaging, we are very lucky to have this local pub, highly recommend.
Spent all day Saturday in the front garden. What a lovely place! Very friendly service and will definitely go back!
While staying locally I went two days running! Both times served by sammy and I have to say- impeccable service and a great addition to the team! Food was amazing and the atmosphere was perfect! Would recommend to all!
Really beautiful pub with good food. The village is lovely and service was fast, would definitely recommend
Lovely country pub with helpful staff, good food and garden and a small field for kids to play in. Watching the Rude Mechanicals performance of Ikarus. Very well done. Enjoyable evening.
Delicious food at a very nice venue with a pleasant garden.
There today for a 70th bday meal . Great Service , lovely food , wonderful atmosphere . Coffees great !
Perfect family run country pub in a beautiful location. Huge sunny garden, great food, friendly staff and charming owners! We’ll be back
Really lovely food, very attentive service. Happy to recommend.
We popped in for an afternoon drink on Friday and so impressed with this pub, we booked a table for 4 the following day for lunch. Food was excellent, good choice and cooked and presented to a high standard. Thank you Paul for your hospitality, nice to visit a proper country pub. Will definitely be back one day. Thanks from Willow for the dog biscuits on both days!
Very hospitable, we hadn't booked and they found space for us. The food was well presented and very nice too. Big up the chef
Had a delicious Sunday roast all perfect . Service was quick and friendly staff . Will be back again and will recommend to my friends
First time to the Star, went for lunch. The food and atmosphere are very inviting and lovely friendly people. We have booked again for an evening meal. Definitely recommend this lovely country pub in the lovely village of Waldron.
Superb pub. Simon and Nicole have transformed the pub and made it totally welcoming and friendly. Can't rank it too highly - go there!
Just eaten here for the first time with the new team, was exceptional, food was delicious and wine lovely in very nice wine glasses, highly recommend a visit, service and atmosphere was amazing.
Fantastic food in a lovely setting, the staff were fantastic as was the food, huge beer garden to the rear of the pub with a good amount of seating, will definitely be going again
Great pub and great food
Really nice pub in a quaint little village in the middle of nowhere... Stayed for a meal from their restaurant menu which was absolutely fantastic. Loads of tender meat in the steak and kidney pie, mustard mash and green veg. Great food at a great price. Definitely would recommend.
Comfy and inviting interior. Felt welcome guests. Very Friendly and attentive staff. Good selection of dishes on the menu. All 6 of us really enjoyed our meals.
Lovely pub and restaurant. Friendly welcome. Food was good and reasonable value although not a lot of vegetarian choices. We had a quiche which was probably shop bought and ok. The chips were lovely though and a nice side salad with dressing. Accessible entrance bar and restaurant but the toilets are not wheelchair accessible.
We may have chosen the wrong things, but the fish platter was quite disappointing, especially considering the pricing. Poor quality salmon and crayfish out of a tub. Location is fab though as is the atmosphere, typical country pub. Just don't order the fish platter. 1 particular staff member was all over the place and making a lot of mistakes which slows service down and means the other staff are having to re-do a lot of her badly done work, but both were friendly.
Just called in for a quick lunch time drink as thinking of moving to the area. This truly a real English country pub with lovely fire, warm atmosphere and lovely views. Food smelt great so will be back soon to try it.
A friends recommendation. As always because he recommended it. "It's the best pub in thr world " I'll never learn 🤣 It was ok at best. Not much atmosphere although staff and owners gave it their best. BBQ - choice of a Hamburger or Hotdog or veggie option and some side salad only. So not a worth 10£ a head. I'll go again but I'll buy a proper meal and get my money's worth as the food is generally good..
It is a nice country pub. In a charming village. The beer was well kept. But the food that we had was very ordinary. So called triple cooked chips were more like warm ups! Battered fish had skin on spoiling both the flavour and the batter. It was a quiet night with few customers. I would visit again as a pub but not for food.
Visited as a group of 8 a few days ago. Pub and garden setting are beautiful but we all felt the food was average, especially for the price, which they are charging top prices. The food was not bad at all, but none of the 8 of us enjoyed our food. Greek salad wasn't a Greek salad, a mackerel salad only had 2 pieces of cucumber and the rest was essentially rocket. Burgers had no flavour at all, even with cheese and caramelized onion topping. We felt the charges don't reflect the quality of the food. Also, a theatre production were doing a show in the beer garden, and someone from them came over and asked us to be quiet. We are on holiday, and it's the first time we've been together as a group since before covid struck. We weren't even being loud and we were quite insulted and it really put a downer on our evening. Not everyone in the beer garden wanted to watch the show so if they want a location where everyone in attendance is there to watch the show, a pub beer garden is not suitable.
A real English Pub in a real English village, but now in April under the new owner Who has put in place some wailing music over the tannoy system makes it very difficult to converse with other people and sadly very sadly I would find it difficult to go again I have just been back two weeks later and greeted by a woman who couldn’t smile from behind the bar who argued with me regarding my choice of wine and gave me no welcome whatsoever. I’ve lived in the area for many many years and it seems most of the locals think the same as me, My advice to the new owner is, if it isn’t broken, don’t try and fix it. So, so sad
A really disappointing experience. The 2 ladies serving were clearly under pressure. It seemed they were short staffed. The starters were shocking. The prawns I ordered turned up, 3 dried up prawns and 5 heads? a dried up piece of toasted bread and a couple of salad leaves. The mains then took over an hr to turn up with no explanation. When the food finally turned up it was truly underwhelming. Me and wife went for confit duck. To say it was a poor show is an understatement. I’m not sure who was cooking, but honestly I’ve had better ping meals. One measly slice of sweet potato to go with it and a sauce that resembled a badly made split greasy bisto gravy. The fish and chips my parents had , was dry and had no taste. It was supposed to be a special meal out as we had family over. Went home hungry and had crumpets!
