I really enjoyed this spot even though some of the food options were foreign to me. I enjoyed the meal but I was suprised they didn't carry ketchup (some people like ketchup) and my dish although very tasty seemed very slight. I would think the dish I had would have more shrimp. The desert was very tasty even though the cookie could have been sweeter.
Different kind of restaurant, because it's a mix of Japanese and Peruvian dishes. Outside are some tables in sun or shade next to the street, which isn't too busy. Inside are some aecluded tables. We tried the siu mai pollo as a starter, which was hot and delicious. Next the salmon donburi and the aji de gallina. The last was a kind of chicken stew with rice and very delicious. Would strongly recommend eating at this restaurant.
The food here was simply incredible! It was bursting with fresh flavors that left my taste buds singing. The Ceviche, Aeropuerto (fried rice), Papas a la Huancaína, and Ají de Gallina were all fantastic dishes. The Suspiro Limeña, the iconic dessert from Peru, was a must-try. I highly recommend taking friends and family here.
The best value for any meal I had in DC. We did the prix fixe brunch and everything was amazing. The server was very helpful with recommendations and answering questions about certain dishes. I highly recommend stopping by if you’re in DC.
My husband and I went last week and did the tasting menu and it was PHENOMENAL. The seafood was so fresh and the true Peruvian dishes were so tasty. Their Lomo Soltado was absolutely amazing and the dessert was one of the best I’ve ever had. Half off wine bottles on Wednesday made it even better. Definitely recommend!
It was a great dining experience overall. The servers were very attentive mostly, apart from sometimes our waitress was tied up serving customers next table. The food is delicious. We got the more comprehensive tasting menu that contained Peruvian, Chinese and Japanese cuisine. It was quite an interesting experience. We can't help it, but it is a bit noisy, so if you are looking for a place to dine and chat with a friend, it might not be the best choice.
I had an incredible dining experience at China Chilcano! I did the chef’s tasting and every dish was a magical journey of bold, unique and vibrant flavors. I loved the beautiful blend of Peruvian cuisine with Asian influences!! The staff was attentive and thoughtful, taking the time to ask about any food allergies or sensitivities, which I really appreciated. I can’t wait to go back again and explore even more of the menu!
My friend has been suggesting this place for months and it totally matches my expectations! We ordered Lomito al Jugo (a beef dish) and Aji de Gallina (a chicken dish). Our waitress is super helpful as well: she pulled out the umbrella on time when it started to rain and is very familiar with the menu. I have to say that the purple thing in Aji de Gallina is quite weird- not sure what that is, tastes like a sour flower. The portion of rice is kind of small too. Otherwise no big problems and I would be happy to come again. Edit: I revisited. Concolon and Shumai are mediocre.
Get one of the tasting menus and the cocktail flight, it's a good deal. Make sure to get the liquid at the bottom of the lomo saltado (spoon it over plain rice) and don't be shy about asking for a knife to cut up the larger pieces.
The atmosphere and service here are awesome. The music and layout keep you engaged while you wait for your meal, and the staff know the menu well. The portions are slightly smaller than what they should be for the price. The issue is the flavors. They start strong and fade fast. You taste what you’re hoping for but within seconds it’s gone. The spicy Szechuan dumplings for example start to heat up then stop and taste like water. The same goes for the shumai dumplings. You get the meat and herbs and as the flavor starts it drops. I enjoyed my kung pao chicken meal but it was a little burnt. My friend had the shrimp and it was ok too. The meal was ok. Same as it was when I ate there years ago. If there were no other options in the area I’d go back.
Literally 10/10. An absolute must. Accommodating, fast. Food is creative, and great. Went here both nights of our trip… thank you Max!!!!
We had lunch at this restaurant a while back and loved it. The food was incredibly delicious, with a perfect blend of flavors from different cooking methods and seasonings. The interior decor was outstanding, with a primary red color scheme complemented by yellow accents, a beautiful mural, and bold design elements. The red glass lanterns hanging from the ceiling added a special touch. The attentive staff provided excellent service, making our dining experience even better.
If anything you must go there for a dessert! I do not know the name of what I ate, but I want more! We ordered a tasting menu, so the names are lost. After the 7th dish, we were very full, but as soon as the desserts arrived, the stomach was ready for more! One dessert was passion fruit with caramel? It was delicious, and I had to stop myself, not to lick the plate. The color of the desert is not very inviting, but trust me - it is die for! Ps-the white sticks in it are maruenge. Another desert was very unusual, and from description, I would never assume what would hit my taste buds. The dessert had crunchy pastry, banana ice cream, and some cocoa magic powder, which made you ask for more. The food was very good, however, it was a bit too heavy for me. ( prefer no starch food - no potatoes, rice, or noodles). Perhaps I ordered wrong. I'm going back to try lighter fair and more desserts for sure! The atmosphere is amazing with a great vibe. Lights are perfect for dining - not good foe food photos.
China Chilcano was fantastic and a standout of our DC weekend. This was our third José Andrés restaurant, and it absolutely delivered. The food was packed with flavor and beautifully done—fresh ceviche, bold Szechuan chili wontons, great cocktails, and very generous portions. Sitting at the bar made it even better; the bartender was welcoming, knowledgeable, and did an amazing job explaining the dishes and the restaurant’s story, with excellent recommendations all around. Warm, inviting, and consistently delicious. Highly recommend.
We visited China Chilcano based off of a locals recommendation. We love Peruvian fusion, and this would be a place we would come back to. The ceviche nikkei was fantastic, perfect for one or two people portion wise. (Kind of small). We also had the Kam Lu & Szechuan wontons - both delicious. I will say they came out in sets of 7, which is interesting. We got the char siu platter which was a build your own pork bun. We loved that too, there was a variety of toppings with unique and fun flavors. It came with four buns but 5 pork belly pieces. Nothing wrong with this but again, odd numbers are always odd. We ended with the chocolate cake, which was only okay. I think most people would love it, but the passion fruit was too rich for me personally. The decor feels a little chain like, but the lighting and noise levels were perfect for great conversation. I think the only thing that was a miss, was that our waters were not refilled until the check was brought out. Overall- i would recommend and come back!
Wow what an experience. The reservation was easy, the service was great, the waitress was knowledgeable, the staff were on point and the owners were walking around and making sure their guests were happy. Highly recommend checking it out. The $40 sampler meal was excellent and excellent choice and the ceviche was wonderful. I've had ceviche in South America and Latin America and this was different but still excellent. Ceviche Nikkei is a must have. The were VERY conscious of allergies and even wrote our dietary restrictions in a notebook with pen and paper. Incredible service.
Very tasty and interesting Peruvian and Asian fusion. We had the Brussels sprouts, ceviche, assorted siu mai, and whole roasted dorade fish. The food was all very flavourful and well presented. We especially liked the whole roasted fish and the siu mai with the quail eggs on top. An excellent, fresh and healthy-tasting change of pace. Service was attentive and the setting was spacious with a fun vibe.
Great meal at China Chilcano in DC. Promptly seated and the room filled up behind me. Lots of drinks both Asian and domestic with others tossed in to boot. My meal was a mix of Peru and Asia with yucca fries and a poke type bowl. The dessert was my favorite part of the meal as it was creative and delicious and the whole thing was part of their "lunch special." I would recommend.
Friendly staff, seated quickly. The decor was culturally gorgeous, fresh hip The food was presented creatively and tasted Michelan level. It was AMAZING
We came here for Restaurant Week and to celebrate our anniversary, and it was such a treat! The atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming, and the team went above and beyond—surprising us with champagne to celebrate. The ceviche was fresh and flavorful, the dumplings were delicious, and the highlight was definitely the leche dessert—layered with sweet and tart flavors that made the perfect ending. Such a unique spot with outstanding food and service!
Easily one of the most unique meals I’ve ever had in the best way. We came for brunch and they have a deal where you pick 3 foods for 37 I believe? It was a good deal because all the food was filling and delicious. The dessert custard I got might be the best thing I’ve had in a long time. Our server was super attentive. We sat outside which is right next to the road so sometimes noisy but nice to sit out on a nice day!
Exquisite fusion of Peruvian and Chinese food. Presentation of the dishes is beautiful and the flavors are inspiration for more.
The ceviche classico was small as well as the sanguche de chancho, so not entirely authentic to Peruvian size plates, but the taste and flavors were great!
Excellent fusion of Chinese and Peruvian food! Pleasantly surprised, as we ordered quite a few dishes and all are surprisingly good. Honestly I’m writing this review because I think this restaurant deserves 4.7-4.8 stars, and can’t believe its current rating. Don’t miss out
Really good food and service. The food surprised us in a super good way since we are peruvians and we have high standards of the peruvian food. we will definetly return.
We went to China Chilcano today with my family and had an absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. The atmosphere was vibrant and beautifully designed, blending traditional and modern touches that really set the mood. It felt like a celebration of Peruvian, Chinese, and Japanese culture all in one place. The food was truly outstanding. Every dish we ordered was packed with flavor, expertly prepared, and artfully presented. You could tell how much thought and creativity went into the menu. From the dim sum to the ceviche to the lomo saltado, everything was a hit at our table. It was a perfect balance of comfort and innovation. The service was just as impressive. The staff was warm, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable. They walked us through the menu, offered helpful recommendations, and made sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. It really made us feel taken care of. China Chilcano exceeded our expectations in every way. It’s not just a meal—it’s a full experience. We left feeling full, happy, and already planning our next visit. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a unique and delicious dining spot in DC!
Eearly Thursday dinner in Chinatown. This Chifa restaurant features Peru's famous asian fusion. Good drinks, hearty portions, good ambiance at a great price. Highly recommend.
All around 5 stars! From the service to the food, everything was top notch. My brother has many allergies and the server took extreme caution and care in ensuring he could safely eat items. The restaurant was knowledgeable and understood severe allergy practices. Everything was delicious, and I cannot wait to go back and show others this true gems!
China Chilcano is consistently excellent. Our large group received prompt, attentive service and delicious food. We were especially grateful for the allergen-labeled menu and accomodations. As a bonus, the restaurant week menu was very well-balanced and well-paced. We will definitely be back.
Tonight was clearly a busy night, we picked up on some busy energy but we were well taken care of! We were seated a few minutes late past our reservation but the manager Tessa was so accommodating, friendly and fun and made it well worth the wait. Our food and drinks came out super quick when we mentioned we had a show and had to leave by a certain time which was so nice. Food and drinks were incredible. Will be returning for the ceviche and yucca 100%. Atmosphere was modern with a hint of quirkiness. Honestly one of the better meals I’ve had.
Outstanding restaurant. My partner and I went for our anniversary and got the chef's tasting menu. Everything was cooked to perfection, the staff was lovely and even gave us a complimentary glass of sparkling wine to mark our special occasion. I can't recommend this place enough. Will definitely be coming back next time we're in town!
This Jose Andres restaurant has bold flavors and interesting dishes and an eclectic mix of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine. Unfortunately it didn't work for me. Some dishes were too salty, others too spicy, and others drenched in sauces. Many of them were just too much of a good thing.
We where looking for a place to eat lunch. We are a family of 4 (two kids 1 and 7 years old). Waiters where really sweet and helpfull guiding us for what was good for all of us but also for the kids. The food was so smazing, we can highly recommend it. We got dancing yucca, Aeropuerto, tam tam, Sánguche de Chancho, Ceviche Nikkei and some dim sums, all of it where fantastic and the kids loved it to
Great environment and service was quickly provided. No reservation needed I got a table for 2 we started with drinks and the octopus ceviche flavor was there I just think it’s a small quantity considering the price. Everything was absolutely delicious ,great fusion.
As a solo guest with an Open Table reservation, I was greeted immediately and seated quickly. I had a view of the bustling bar and packed dining area. I have a few dietary restrictions and my server was knowledgeable and professional. Without being able to try the items made with flour (GF) and the items with red meat or pork, my options are always reduced, but I can almost always find something that shows off the kitchen's expertise. I ordered the Tallarín Zhen Fe, added shrimp, and a Chilcano for good measure. New to Peruvian food, I was pleasantly surprised with how familiar and warm the flavors were. Somehow it was also bright and refreshing with fresh herbs whatever was in that green sauce! It paired really nice with the shrimp and kept me coming back for more. The cocktail was average and exactly as described...tasted a bit like a glorified lime soda for $15. If I had added the MACERADOS for $13 I'm sure it would have improved it. My favorite was dessert. It was delightful. Rich flavor with the caramel, different textures and temperatures all in the same bowl, and reminded me of the swirling fun light that spans the dining room. Serving staff was fast and professional with the bill. All in all, a great way to spend an hour on my last night in DC. Thanks!
My coworkers had excellent things to say about this spot and they did not disappoint. Not only is the restaurant a beautifully designed with low ambient lighting, the music is not too loud, and service is superb. We ordered so many appetizers the ceviche was great and so was everything else. I wasn’t wowed but it was not underwhelming. For the main I got the Aji De Gallina which is the perfect meal for fall! It’s rich, cozy, and comforting. A good portion and flavorful. The star of the show for me was dessert. We got the Suspiro Limeña and it was PERFECT!!! Not too sweet, the perfect balance of passion fruit and the bites of merengue sealed the deal. Worth a visit for sure.
Checked this spot out on Mother's Day this year as they had a fabulous fixed menu. We have been to a few Andres Group spots now and this one is perfect if you arent on a Bazaar budget. Especially when they have special menus The dumplings were fantastic and the Dancing Yucca was very interesting/tasty. The bonito flakes on yhe Yucca added a delicious smokey element. We each got a different dish and loved the ability to swap if one liked another dish more than the other. The variety was nice. I will say that the least successful dish of the night was the ceviche. More so due to the extra things that were thrown inside of it. Their bao was delish as well. Of the desserts, the interesting purple corn dish was the table favorite. Gotta love the whimsy at places like this. If we were in DC as opposed to coming down from Baltimore, i could see this as a place we frequent. Specials seem to be a constant here whether they be food or drink related.
Food is definitely different than anything I've ever had. We left it up to the chef to decide our courses. The ceviches were flavorful. Portions are smaller than expected, but they give you a few dishes, so it ends up working out great. You can tell the ingredients are top notch! The chocolate mousse dessert with banana ice cream is amazing!! The other one they gave us is a guava tart dessert. Both are decadent. The lighting in here is not great. All the photos came out the same color, lol. Staff is super friendly and helpful. It was a bit more than we wanted to spend, but worth it.
I chose this restaurant for my dad’s birthday. My parents had never had Peruvian food, so I thought it was a good choice to dine. I recommend making a reservation in the event that the restaurant is too crowded. I arrived about ten mins prior to my allocated time, and I was welcomed and sat promptly. Our server was lovely and very accommodating. This was definitely a “restaurant” experience, perhaps one of the best I’ve had in a while. I can see how the other reviewers identified this place as a tourist trap. Yet, it is a beautiful restaurant, great staff, and gorgeous location. The food was really good. However, I was expecting a more “homey” Peruvian dining experience but this was closer to fine dining. The menu is expensive: from dim sum to chaufa. I thought the flavors were really delicious. I ordered the char siu plate, but I wish the menu described it was a “build your own bun” kind of plate. It was delicious but I thought it was funny how it was a make your own bun. The pork meat was succulent! My only complaint was the chaufa. It wasn’t really “chaufa” but the menu didn’t describe it as such either. It was more of a clay pot rice. Flavors were outstanding; lots of rice, lots of sauce, lots of lap chong. But it was a bit wet— either they didn’t use day old rice or they didn’t bake the pot for long. Regardless, it was still delicious. Servings are a bit small, so beware. The restaurant is not cheap, so there’s that. The dessert menu is very unique! I enjoyed the torta de chocolate. It was paired with banana ice cream. The layers of chocolate was filled with some kind of maracuya sauce (?). It was so unexpected and yummy. I think the cake and ice cream had a drizzle of olive oil— very nice touch. Their drink menu is large too! I had both Peruvian beers on their menu (Cusqueña and Callao). Excellent choices. More importantly, service was excellent! From the host, to server, to busers, everyone was excellent.
You can get $25 off your bill here using the link on my profile! All the dishes we got were enjoyable, presentable, and as someone from new york, their prices seemed very generous too. We were able to walk in and get seats at the bar at peak hour during the weekend, which was also a pleasant surprise. Our waiters were very kind as well. As a side note, the pisco sour is good (not too sweet) but not as extraordinary as some reviews have claimed it to be.
Was here for Valentine’s day dinner so it was packed!! We were sat very close to each other and the music was kinda loud. We sat on the left side of the place with yellow lighting so everything that was brought to us looked yellow. Service was pretty slow maybe because it was so busy but I had very high expectations with it being a Jose Andreas restaurant but was underwhelmed.
China’s Chilcano, Peruvian restaurant Lomo Saltado was close to original flavors some meat chunks were burned so was the rice and presentation was good for the exception of cilantro branch, Also ordered a simple Aeropuerto a mixture of Rice and noodles wok fried with chicken however chicken was never found was told it was served grounded again never found, rice was very soyed and flavors never found to the original taste, ceviche was the closest plate and flavors but white corn was dry and hard. Overall knowing how Peruvian food is as good and very tasty well let me say not impressed, drinks good, restaurant decor is excellent, if you are coming have a reservation handy.
Nice interior, friendly service, and not so good food. The food did not actually look or taste like Chinese cuisine. We ordered Camaro Saltado Maestro Wong for $23 and Lomo Saltado for $25. The former one was ~ five small shrimps with few mushrooms and about a tablespoon of rice, the latter was 4-5 pieces of beef with a lot of onions, a great deal of something that looked and tasted like french fries, few greens, and a spoonful of rice. Photos attached.
the food is ok but not amazing. very small portions & the burger is $25 so it is very expensive. The chocolate cake was delicious. I went for brunch with 3 friends and the bill without tip was $291. the service was good but could be better with filling the drinks. I probably won't go again because it is very expensive for what you get.
Wanted to stop and eat at Moon Rabbit but it was closed. Came here instead since it was close by and trying one of José Andrés’ restaurants was on my bucket list. Needless to say, the culinary experience felt very lacking at this particular restaurant and I left wishing I tried another one of his restaurants. I ordered the ceviche clasico and the dancing yucca. Both tasted pretty mediocre. The ceviche - which is one of their menu highlights - was underwhelming. Typically I’d expect more quality out of a ceviche especially if the portion size is smaller. The ceviche clasico didn’t meet that bar. It just felt like a hodgepodge of ingredients were thrown together and the flavor did not mesh well. The fusion was not fusioning with this one. The dancing yucca was marginally better but it’s really just French fries with sauce and bonito flakes. At the very least, the service was good but overall would not return here. Try out one of the other nearby José Andrés restaurants.
Fine dining? The priced are very high and portions tiny. The food is good though. The peruvian and the chinese do taste authentic. Although the pisco sour does not, it's not bad at all, but it does not taste like pisco sour.
Reconsider your dining option. The Spanish restaurateur missed the mark when pairing Peruvian and Chinese food and this kind of seems like a tourist trap. Everything was fine. Nothing of the 7 courses was great. The fusion just produced odd flavors and I wished I had picked a different restaurant for date night. The positives were, the seafood was fresh and the alcoholic drinks were good, but don’t order an Arnold Palmer. Just bad. In addition to the food being, whatever, the service was slow and not very attentive. I blame a lack of actual waiters in the main dining room. The rest of the staff was helpful and nice. The waiter did not explain the items being served or how best to eat them. For example, typically ceviche is served with some sort of chip and it was just a spoon. The waiter also forgot to bring us one of the courses. The bathroom was not clean and the mirror look like clown mirrors.
Reminder that my star reviews are solely based on food flavor but I will provide some extra info on other aspects of the visit. Overall, the food was just so so which is a 3 star rating for me. We got the Chilcano tasting menu which was composed of multiple dishes throughout the night. I can't say any of it was memorable but none of it was bad. The dishes lacked significant flavor with the exception of the mashed potatoes. Now those were absolutely delicious. I don't believe I will be returning to the restaurant for future meals. I'm glad I tried it but it was disappointing. The service was pretty good. They seemed attentive when we needed a water or wine refill. And they cleared our plates quickly. The places itself is pretty swanky and could be nice for a quick drink but I would recommend going somewhere else for a meal. Again, 3 stars is just ok. It is not bad food.
The lighting is a bit weird, and the food aims to be great cultural fusion, but falls flat despite being expensive. The nian gao was alright, and the dessert was interesting in flavour, but in terms of portion and effort, fell below expectations. Maybe it'll be a better experience for me some other time. :)
This is the first restaurant make me feel I was cheated and money was stolen. Some restaurants' food wasn't that tasty, but they still gave you the decent amount that worth the price you paid. This place makes me spent 20 on this tiny portion and they put in a big box. Was wondering if they gave the wrong food for me. Try to finish it and taste was very cold and bad. Don't go to this place unless you want to donate money.
