my favorite filipino restaurant in the city! it feels like home in the best way--the service is warm and casual, and the food is DELICIOUS. have tried the laing, sinuglaw, pork nilaga (personal fave!!!), kare-kare, sinigang na hipon, and breakfast overload so far. all authentic and excellent choices!!
I was completely blown away by the quality of the food at this Filipino restaurant. As someone who typically only enjoys homemade Filipino food, I found this place to be exceptionally good—even better than many spots in Little Manila. My girlfriend, who is not Filipino, absolutely loved the Pancit and the refreshing Calamansi Juice. I ordered the Pork Sisig and thought it was great, though I did miss having sili (chili) for the toyomansi dip. The only minor issue was the slightly mushy rice that came with the sisig, which perhaps is a subtle hint to order the garlic rice next time! I am definitely planning a return trip to try the Bulalo and Karekare. Be aware that parking is an issue around the area.
Tyang Gelay’s Grill in Woodside is an absolute gem! We tried the Crispy Pata, Giant Bulalo, Palabok, and Grilled Tuna Belly, and every single dish was flavorful, authentic, and cooked to perfection. The Crispy Pata was golden and crunchy on the outside while staying tender inside, the Bulalo was rich and comforting, and the Tuna Belly had that perfect smoky grill taste. The Lumpia Sariwa (fresh) was also a standout—so refreshing and delicious that it’s a must-order. The portions are generous, the service is warm, and the overall vibe makes you feel right at home. Can’t wait to come back and try even more from the menu!
After experiencing homemade meals in the Philippines, I’ve struggled to find a Filipino restaurant that truly hits the mark. I was just passing by when something about this place caught my eye—it looked cute, so I walked in. That first impression? Just the beginning. The smell alone took me back to the Philippines—it felt like home. And the food? I got chills. I’m not kidding—goosebumps and that full-body moment of joy. It’s that good. Dishes I didn’t even like before? I’m now a fan. Everything is made with so much love, balance, and bold flavor, it honestly blew me away. I’m telling all my friends to come here. The only downside? I can’t stop eating. Seriously, send help—this food is addictive. 🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵
Booked a reservation for a friends bday and tried the Filipino Kamayan feast. Amazing customer service , beautiful traditional ambiance and Authentic insanely great food flavorful, freshly cooked, hot straight from the kitchen, massive selection we couldn’t asked for more! We were blown away how this restaurant was!!!! It’s beyond expectations and definitely highly recommend will be back again! Kudos to team Rachel, Tyang Gelay and the Angels!!! 10/10 run don’t walk Tyang Gelay’s Grill is a force to reckon in Woodside! Big ❤️ from Quiapo girls
This restaurant offers a lot of Filipino classics that are done really well. Started with a very tasty sago't gulaman and their fresh kilawin. The kilawin (Filipino-style ceviche) had a good amount of fish (the best part). I had their dinuguan (pork blood stew) as my main and it was delicious; rich and flavorful, and perfect with rice.
Authentic Filipino cooking, just like back home! They don’t scrimp on ingredients. Highly recommend the sinuglaw, kare-kare, bulalo and lumping sariwa.
Tyang Gelay's Grill is a gem! We walked in on a Sunday at 6pm and were seated and served immediately, which was fantastic. The food was absolutely delicious and transported me right back to the Philippines. We ordered the sisig, tortang talong, and palabok, and everything was excellent, especially the sisig – it's a must-try! The prices are incredibly reasonable, making it a great value. I can't wait to return!
Whenever my boyfriend and I start craving that true taste of home, there’s only one place we think of — this Filipino restaurant that has absolutely captured our hearts and stomachs. From the moment you step in, the atmosphere already feels like a warm hug — cozy, welcoming, and filled with the comforting sounds and smells of a real Filipino kitchen. The service? Always top-notch. Everyone is incredibly friendly, accommodating, and genuinely kind. It’s that kind of place where you feel like family every time you dine in. As for the food — where do I even begin? Everything we’ve tried has been chef’s kiss delicious. The lomi is rich and comforting, the fresh lumpia is perfectly balanced and fresh, and the crispy pata is just next level — crispy, tender, and flavorful. But one of the absolute highlights for us is their large bulalo. The big bone leg that comes in it is amazing — fall-off-the-bone tender and full of flavor. And best part? They don’t cheap out on the meat. It's generously portioned, hearty, and so satisfying. Definitely a 10/10 dish. And don’t even get me started on the hot calamansi juice, especially during rainy days. It’s like a warm hug in a cup — comforting, tangy, and soul-soothing. There’s something so beautifully simple and authentic about how they cook here. Nothing feels overdone. Just good, honest, home-style Filipino food that brings you straight back to the Philippines with every bite. If you're looking for authentically homemade Filipino cooking, this place... this place is it. Highly, highly recommend. 💯🇵🇭
They have a good Filipino food menu. It felt homey, cozy here. My partner and I shared a menudo (pork) and tinulang manok (chicken soup). Both were delightful and served with decent amount of rice. During dinner time, they can get quite busy. We hope to come back for their breakfast menu!
I Must admit this place is in my top 5 Filipino Restaurants of NYC. The Food was amazing and for the 1st time in a long time we couldn’t finish it all. 🙈 The place is decent sized can accommodate large parties if you call ahead of time. The service, although they where amazing and friendly and accommodating, could have been a little faster or more attentive. Was a little hard to get our servers attention to the point we just didn’t try. (We never got the white rice that came with one of our orders, but we over ordered anyway and where too full to even mention it once we got the attention on the server 😂) All and all this place is not only a Must Eat NYC Location but a Must Return for the menu Location as well. I can’t wait to come back and try the breakfast and other dishes.
Amazing new addition to the Filipino restaurant scene of Woodside! All of the food was delicious and came out quickly. I especially loved the bulalo soup, sisig bagnus, the kaldereta kambing, which is very surprising because I usually don’t like goat! The waitresses were all very friendly and attentive to our big group of 9. Prices weren’t bad either. Looking forward to coming back and trying the kamayan feast!
Its 5 star for me...the place has a good authentic pilipino food! Bulalo and Kare Kare must try this one of there best cooking foe dessert Halo-halo where you can have that crunchy bite of pinipig! Yummy...enjoy
The stewed beef was outstanding. Likewise for their roasted chicken, ox tail stew with peanut sauce, fish stew and egg rolls. Our waitress was very friendly and explained all the dishes with us due to our unfamiliarity with Filipino cuisine. The place is a keeper

In a place called Little Manila in Queens, NY this is one of THE places to dine in. Service is fast and efficient. The restaurant is full of friendly Filipinos both servers and diners. The ambiance mirrors the feel of being in Manila by the LRT! I love, love, love it! FOOD IS AMAZING! Ang sarap, grabe!

We ordered 25 trays. Menudo, Shanghai, Chopsuey, Chicken Adobo, Pancit Bam I. The best caterer. The food is delicious, great feedback from our guest. The serving per trays is not what we are expecting. Full trays..Our guests keeps in coming back for food. Thank you Gelay and your staff. 👏👏👏
As a Filipino American who longs for the comforts of my past home, a meal at Tyang Gelay's is truly food for the soul. One of many Filipino restaurants in what is known as little Manila, Tyang Gelay's stands out with its made-to-order and authentic fare. Dining space is unassuming, clean and well-lit. Menu offers abundant Filipino dishes to choose from. My wife and I chose Crispy Pata (fried pork knuckles), Kalderetang Kambing (goat stew) and Ginisang Ampalaya.(suated bitter melon). The dishes came out rather quickly - a pleasant surprise since Filipino food takes time to prepare. The Crispy Pata was expertly cooked with an ultra crispy skin and melt-in-your-mouth blend of pork meat and fat. The soy dipping sauce was an excellent foil to the somewhat strong pork knuckle meat taste. The goat stew had a serving of tender chunks of goat meat which to anyone is oxymoronic, as tough as goat meat gets. Complemented by fresh red and green peppers and a rich savory and tangy sauce, it hit all the high notes. Sautéd bittersweet melon was the perfect palate cleanser, perfectly cooked with tomatoes and shrimps. Even the rice was better in quality than what most other restaurants serve. Tyang Gelay's hands down is one of the best Filipino restaurants I've dined at this side of the world. Short of flying to Manila, this is as good as it gets.

Restaurant has about 10 tables that seat 4 peopleml. Service was excellent. Food was great. Depending one what you get be prepared to get your hands a little dirty chopping the meat off the bones.
Definitely coming back! The star of the show was the crispy fried tilapia from the dasilog, mango salad, laing and chicken bbq.

Tyang Gelay’s is worth the trek from Manhattan if you’re craving traditional Filipino home cooking. The food is that good. (plus you don’t pay Manhattan prices). The ginataang kalabasa at sitaw ($13.50 plus tax) was a standout dish, even if the sitaw has been replaced with green beans). The lechon kawali and pork sisig were delicious. With the warm Filipino hospitality and a mostly Filipino clientele, the restaurant makes you feel like you’re in the Philippines.
I was craving for Grilled Pork and we even found a better option which we called Kinilaw na Inihaw na Baboy or Grilled Pork in vinegar. Ohhh so goood! And theyre sinampalukang manok, the best!! For the chicken Inasal, it’s ok coz the meat is not that juicy but still tastes Inasal. Definitely will go back!
Typical Filipino restaurant. Its really tough to rate your own type of food. As I said to someone, Filipino restaurant customers are 90% their own. So, to be successful in the business the food has to be super good or super cheap, otherwise people can cook it at home.
Worst 20$ I ever spent, got take out for sisig pork and the portion is really tiny. Honestly looks like 7-10$ worth of food at best, and all I can taste is the spicy.

It is with deep sadness that I toll the death knell of yet another Filipino restaurant in Woodside. To paraphrase "You can not live by love alone.", "A restaurant can not thrive by its food alone." Through the years, we saw great Filipino restaurants come and go in the area - Engeline's, House of Inasal, Rosario's, Kalye Bistro, and more. The cooks are skilled, churning out one delicious dish after another. Afterall, Tyang Gelay's is the highest rated Filipino restaurant in Woodside right now. The servers are gorgeous, keeping calm and keeping their sense of humor amidst the erratic production of dishes from the kitchen. The clientele are as lovely, patient as only Filipinos can be - we who endured 300 years of brutal Spanish colonization with hardly any uprising. In my more than 20 years of picking up reserved Filipino foods in the Woodside area for the holidays - birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, you name it, this is the first time EVER I had to stand for 50 minutes (and 30 minutes waiting for 5pm) to get the food I paid for. When restos here say you must pick up by 5pm, it means the food is ready to go by that time (and even sometimes 30 minutes earlier), NOT BEING COOKED WHILE YOU WAIT. This is on Christmas eve, when people are supposed to prepare themselves for a party, not stand 50 minutes in line for food that has already lost its taste. To put it mildly, the picking up of Christmas food at Tyang Gelay's is a mess of epic proportion. Hopefully they cooked and gave the last tray before midnight. Someone needs to go back to culinary school - not to learn how to cook but how manage a restaurant of this insignificant size. Or perhaps a tutorial at another established Filipino restaurant nearby would suffice?!
