Combination chicken, beef & shrimp noodles spicy 😋 fast action service for lunch break. Also my food order was accurate with my personal request and adjustments my food was awesome tasting this was my 1st visit here. It mostly definitely isn't my last time 👍.
After a long winter day my boyfriend and I stopped in to get some dinner. The food was delicious (just what we needed!) and we were even offered some complimentary hot tea! Very very kind staff , we definitely will be going back.
Chen’s Gourmet is a gem in the wall. Inconspicuously hidden above a few steps and modestly colored so that it’s wall blend into its surroundings, the only thing that could possibly garner and attention visually is it’s beautiful sign out front. That being said, the food is otherworldly. Rarely do I have Americanized Chinese cuisine that tastes of high quality ingredients, and unique recipe originality, but Chen’s does exactly that. The General Tso’s is beautifully done, under a layer of thick sweet and spicy sauce with large chunks of crunchy fried white meat chicken. The Kung Pao chicken and shrimp is also marvelous, done with a take airing more on the traditional palate, but excluding all the typical medley of random vegetables that offer little to the experience. Overall, Chen’s Gourmet provides an excellent dining experience, where the food is phenomenal, the owner and chef and the rest of the employees are kind and generous, and the atmosphere, in spite of its modest exterior, boasts a little restaurant that the people of the Palisades are proud to call their own.
Delicious, well spiced General Tso's Chicken. Not sweet, red chilis, large seasoned batter coated chunks of dark chicken meat. What we love about Chen's- an old favorite of the medical residents at Georgetown Hospital- is the depth of flavors, lots of high quality chicken, and less broccoli filler. The General Tso's Chicken is hands down the best in DC. Other delectable dishes include Shrimp and Vegetables (great variety of veggies with a light spiced brown sauce) and noodle dishes such as Lo Mein. Seafood such as scallops, shrimp, and lobster are large, sweet-fresh, and cooked skillfully. The veggies are cooked tender-crisp, and delivery service is reliable. I've been ordering from Chen's since 1992.
I would strongly recommend Chen's Gourmet. I ordered something from their menu that I wanted to exchange as it tasted like peanuts. Not only did they allow me to keep the original, but they made a replacement. This is the customer service I rarely experience nowadays and sincerely appreciate. The food was delicious on top of that. Chen's Gourmet will always have my loyalty
Gourmet is right. Chen's offers some delicious and fair priced food with a wealthy sized portions. It's not a large place and doesn't have much space to eat, but I'd you do sit and eat, you can browse down at the MacArthur Blv atmospheres and people watch. To end it off, the chefs are friendly and the food is fantastic. Everything just tastes very authentic and sits just right. I'd recommend getting their Sesame Chicken, as it's easily their best dish!
By far my favorite Chinese restaurant on the east coast. I especially like the General Tso as well as their crispy beef. The veggies taste fresh and are not overcooked. They use a little bit of sesame oil in their rice which gives it that little bit of extra flavor. Every time I come to the DC area I make a point to stop by here. Absolutely delicious.
Ordering at Chen's for the first time I was expecting mediocre Chinese food, boy was I ever wrong. I ordered two General Tao's chicken plates, one extra spicy for myself the other regular for my girlfriend. The chicken was a great quality and came with a generous helping of broccoli. I consider myself a big eater, but it was all I could do to finish my plate. My girlfriend made hers into two meals. The extra spicy had heat on part with Thai or Indian hot. It was the best Chinese food I've had not only in DC but in the US. The chicken was crispy and not soggy, and the broccoli was steamed to perfection. On top of that they give us a few $10 off coupons. This is my new go to place for Chinese. Highly recommend!
Great place! Super friendly, thoughtful and accomodating guy. Good, fresh food. To go bag always has cutlery, napkins, fortune cookies, sauces, and a lil bonus (last time it was an apple)! Cute little table to wait, food made quickly. Great fried rice, shrimp, spring rolls. Lo mein kinda bland.
We visited family in DC for 10 days and on day 3 we ordered a huge vegetarian meal from Chen's. In the following days, our meat-eating parents were requesting another order so we had another huge feast. What a delight and a treat this place is - some of the best fake meat I've ever had (and being veg for 30 years, that is saying a lot). It's fresh, it's vibrant, it's scrumptious. I can't say enough good things about the food here, you feel like royalty eating a plate of this food. After both meals we took a pen to the menu to put a heart next to the items we loved most and, well, everything we ordered got a heart both times. Phenomenal. Go ahead and get a double order of the Vegetarian Crispy Beef, it was everyone's favourite. I can't believe I didn't snap a photo, too excited to dig in I guess. Best food of our holiday. Thanks, Chen's! Keep up the great work.
If you’re in a hurry, this might not be the spot for you—wait times can range from 30 minutes to even an hour. That’s because, impressively, the owner is running almost the entire operation by himself. He takes orders, cooks, and probably even cleans up. Judging by how late he stays (I heard he clocks out around 2am), it’s clear he’s doing it all with dedication. As a contractor always on the move, this place hits the spot—affordable, flavorful, and filling. Being Hispanic, I found the Chinese food here to be really good. In fact, during my visits, most of the customers I saw were Hispanic too. Everyone complains about the wait, but when the chef finally comes out with your food, the mood shifts—people go from frustrated to laughing and joking. That says something about both the flavor and the energy this place gives off. Yes, there are things that could be improved, but you can feel the passion behind this business. The owner is a genuinely kind person, and despite the chaos, he takes care of every customer. For me, this is the only place I’d grab food if I’m in the area—cheap, tasty, and run by someone who truly cares. 05/23/2025 I called at 11:30am got there at 12:30pm and my order wasn’t ready. The owner said he wasn’t take phone orders until i got their.
This place is a must if you are craving solid, comforting Chinese takeout, this is your go to The food is consistently prepared at the moment, flavorful. Everything arrives hot and well-packaged, which makes takeout easy and stress-free. Service is fast and super friendly. Overall, it’s reliable Chinese takeout that keeps you coming back.
Underwhelming. They try but doesn’t seem authentic enough. It’s a neighborhood restaurant but not a destination Will go back if I’m in the area and feel like Asian food
Today I was craving Chinese food , we found this small restaurant, to be honest is not the best that I’ve had, but it was ok The only complaint I have is overcooked broccoli, overall good
If you like carrots and celery, this is your place. Crispy beef came with too much sauce and was 2/3 celery and carrots. So much sauce, beef was no longer crispy. Sauce too sweet.
UPDATE: since it's super convenient for me, I tried it again despite my earlier bad experience. I got the recommended-by-other-reviewers General Tso's, along with wonton soup and BBQ spare ribs. The chicken was tasty and tender, the ribs not very glazed but decent quality meat, but the soup had limp noodles and was rather tasteless. Big picture, though, a big improvement over my initial impression. Still expensive though. Original review: Poor quality - greasy, tasteless - and pricey to boot
The staff is very friendly, however... The food is quite bland. The seafood soup tasted like boiled water. There was no stock flavor of any type. The dumplings tasted store bought. The entree's were edible but everyone commented that they were bland.
This was my first time trying Chen’s. I got a Lo Mein dish, as it is my go-to Asian dish. This was, hands down, the worst Lo Mein I’ve ever had. They basically gave me plain noodles with some flavorless breaded beef thrown in. It had zero sauce and zero flavor. Can’t speak for their other dishes, but do not recommend Lo Mein.
The food has little to no taste or seasoning. I couldn’t believe they were selling uncooked wings to people. I told her they were not done & she told me they had been cooked for 16 minutes….like ok? Cook it longer then. Because the wings were white. Almost like it was a bit too fresh….I also got lo mein with no sauce and it was awful. I would give 1 star if I could
I never write reviews but I had to comment on this one. I recently experienced the worst Singapore noodle dish I have ever had. No curry flavor at all. Chicken was cooked with globs of fat still on it, beef was tough and chewy, shrimp was not deveined. I ate 1/4 of the dish and threw the rest away....and I hate wasting money. Never again.
