Hickory Street Cafe Abilene Reviews
I feel like I am giving a lot of five stars lately but this is a perfect example of a ladies' tea room. Soups, salads, sandwiches, all done well, plus zucchini bread and quiches. Old gramma's house feel with downtown area convenience, not far from Paramount. The bad news? Only open M-F 11-2.
Got to have lunch here for the first time last week. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. And the food is top notch. I had a soup and half sandwich and still had leftovers. Price point is very reasonable for the amount of food uou receive. Cannot wait to visit again soon!
Went today for the first time with my best friend. Just went on a whim for a quick lunch. The place is absolutely adorable! The whole atmosphere is great! Love that they kept the house aesthetic in tact. The staff are so nice. I believe Denise was our server today, sweetest lady. The food....omg!!! Sooooo good! We also got peach and raspberry tea, so refreshing so good. The prices were great too! Definitely will be going back to try something else on the menu!!! Definitely recommend!
Great service and environment! If you’re looking for a home style cooking or hospitality, this is the place! Ordered the creamy potato soup! Out of this world
Stopped in for lunch recently and really enjoyed the experience. The staff was friendly, and the food was amazing, all handmade by folks who clearly love food. The environment was really neat too. Setup in an old craftsman-style house, it was comfortable and inviting. The details in the decor were topped only by the attention to detail in their food. Everything was fresh, the quiche was delicious, and peach tea is probably the best peach tea I have ever had. I will definitely be back.
First time here, it will not be my last! Came after lunch rush and it was peaceful, but I’m sure even with a ton of people the food/service no doubt would still be just as excellent! Words couldn’t express the attentiveness our waitress provided! (Unfortunately I cannot remember her name! Sorry!) and the front desk lady gave the most warm welcoming and cheery feel! The atmosphere was bright and airy. The decor was spectacular and gave you a farm/cottage house feel. We had the Philly cheesesteak, chicken salad sandwich, and the side fixings of pasta salad, broccoli cheddar soup, potato sticks, zucchini bread (absolutely delicious!!) , paired with their sweet iced peach tea! Please, if it’s a lovely day or even a rainy one… stop in and have brunch or lunch! You will not be disappointed!
Hickory Street Cafe had a home feel to it where servers were very friendly and everybody knows everyone. It had a small town vibe to it, yet cozy. The inside was very cute and I enjoyed my time spent there. I can definitely see why parking filled up quickly. 10 out of 10, this place deserves it. I left feeling full, happy, and healthy! Can't wait to visit again.
Really good light lunch. Their banana bread is really good. Moist, dark, uummm, and really good with cream cheese. The most popular thing is the chicken salad but today I had a salad, cup of broccoli soup, and broccoli quiche. The only thing I can think of to say negative is the tables are a little close. Obviously not a big deal. It sits on a nice old house they remodeled and decorated. Really great staff that will do anything for you.
Hickory Street Cafe is a must if you’re in Abilene, Texas. This cafe that serves up some of the best homemade zucchini bread that you’ll ever come across and can be bought in loaves to go, is only open during the week for lunch. It also serves salads, sandwiches, soups and other fresh baked goods. The children’s menu includes Mac and cheese, which was a hit with some of our group. The chicken salad and quiche were also made with fresh ingredients. I had a sandwich with a side of the cream of potato soup and fresh fruit cup topped with yogurt… delightful combination. And what’s better than a good meal served with a raspberry ice tea with free refills. It was a charming atmosphere in a historic home with very tasty food. In fact we bought a few loaves of the zucchini bread to take back home because it was that good. Tip - make reservations to make sure there’s a table available. Highly recommend!
This is such a great lunch spot! Went with a friend, and we both ordered the same thing. The Salad Sampler with Maple Vinaigrette. It came with their very popular chicken salad, a pasta salad with chicken, and a garden salad. It also came with 2 pieces of zucchini bread. I liked the pasta salad with chicken. It was tangy, and the chicken had good texture but not really any flavor. The chicken salad was a flavor bomb in your mouth! Wow! Awesome flavor. BUT I got WAY too many fatty, rubbery, grisly pieces to be able to thoroughly enjoy it, which was a bummer. But I did eat the pieces that I could tell would have a good texture. I ordered their vegetable of the day quiche, to go, which was a broccoli mushroom. It was delicious! I also ordered a bowl of broccoli parmesan soup to go and did not like the texture of this soup at all, but the flavor was very good! It was goopy. Reminded me of paper mache glue. The raspberry iced tea was very good. It's not too sweet, very refreshing. I will go back because it's a nice spot for lunch. But I will definitely try other things or maybe stick with the quiche!
I've been going to Hickory Street Cafe for about 6 years and have seen this restaurant progressively charge more for their food and shrink the portion size . It's unfortunate that I have to write this, but the owner needs to know customers are noticing, and like me, are not happy about it. The price does not justify the amount of food being served and the food being served is not that expensive to source. It's chicken salad. Starting to get out of hand and heading in the wrong direction.
I guess I should have been leaving good reviews for the past 15+ years. I hate to be the person who only ever leaves bad reviews, but I digress. This was always a go to place when I came back to town to see the folks. I remember I had knee surgery a few years ago and the first thing I wanted after the anesthesia wore off was the chicken salad from Hickory Street. It NEVER failed or disappointed. Not sure what has happened the last couple of times I’ve gone, but that is NOT the same chicken salad recipe that has people raving and trying to duplicate it from multiple states. These past couple of times I got it, it had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. The price is higher and the food is very underwhelming, not at all like it used to be. The old hickory street underpromised and over delivered, but this new recipe is a miss for me. Sad, too, as I always tried to get to town early just to be able to get my fix of that amazing food, but I won’t be returning this long beloved place until they fix whatever problem they have in the kitchen.
Something has changed. In the past it was delicious. Last visit, cold hard sandwich with 1 slice of meat, no potato sticks or pasta salad on my to go order. Potato soup has changed, texture is gel like. Only good thing was the zucchini bread! Overall, very disappointing.
I've been here a few times before and it was always wonderful. Not so this time. The broccoli parmesan soup was tasteless so I returned it and the sandwich was mediocre. My waitress did not ask if I'd like anything in replace of the soup nor did she ask if we wanted dessert or take home containers when she brought the check. I asked if it would be deducted from my check and she said nothing in response as she wisked away the cash for my tab and debit card for my friend's. Shortly thereafter, she returned the debit card but never brought back my change. She and 2 other employees were talking about a customer at the next table over in front of all the other customers. Having waited for quite some time, I eventually got up and asked the hostess for take home containers and my change. She immediately brought the container and interrupted the employee conversation to inquire about my change. Our waitress brought back the change with no reduced price for the uneaten soup, no answer as to why, no apology, no thank you and no "have a nice day". There were other items to note but space is limited. Very disappointed on multiple layers, especially the lack of courtesy and customer service! I will go to Sweet Thyme Kitchen next time instead.
