Café Bunn Mi Alameda Reviews
Great value and service. We ordered the smokey vegetarian and the sole sandwiches. Balanced flavor combos made it a satisfying meal. Careful of the wait times during busy periods and don’t forget it’s cash only. Overall a great first experience! Can’t wait to go back and try the noodles and pho.
Very authentic, and my wife is from Saigon. The house special pho and grilled pork bahn mi were both spectacular. The roasted chili paste is the BEST with lemongrass flavor, but more than 1 will cost extra. We ordered an extra broth for the pho. The prices are high, but worth it 100%!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. We will come back here every time in SF, for sure.
5 stars for the service, 3-4 stars for the food. The two gentlemen working the front are absolutely delightful. First, the cashier seemed happy to take my order and was patient with the modifications I had to my order. When the server came with our one bowl of pho, he saw that we were two people and without prompt asked if we were sharing and offered to bring another bowl and set of chopsticks and spoon. That was such a thoughtful gesture. All the employees were playful with each other, and it seemed like a great work environment. The food was fresh but not that special, pretty meh. I'll give 5 stars for the great experience I had.
Cheap and filling. Took 2 minutes from ordering five spice chicken sandwiches to getting it. They bring to your table. They aren't joking around with the spiciness of the sandwich. I have a high tolerance but that was hicup inducing. Only downside was 2 bones in the sandwich. Was about $8 for the meal
It's Monday, June 22, 2020. They're open for take out, and they also have delivery. Temporary Limited hours M-F 10am-8pm and S-S 9am-8pm. They have a couple of tables & chairs outside but only to use while waiting for food. There are chairs inside as well but same thing - so you have a place to sit while waiting for your take away. Please wear masks and respect the social distancing. We ordered at the restaurant to go, food smelled delicious. Once we were able to get home, food was delicious!!!😋😍 ☺️
Wednesday is the dayyyyyy Perfect balance of meat and veggies 🔥 Grilled pork banh mi also amazing (not pictured cuz I devoured)
I have now tried every reputable Bahn mi shop in San Francisco and I will say they have the best ones yet. The balance between the meat and veggies is perfect and everything is super fresh and flavorful. The sandwich and veggies are crunchy and the meat soft. The lemongrass steak is to die for. They also have other options like pho that seemed legit. I need to go back and try. Seating inside is available. They only take cash.
Cafe Bunn Mi is a quaint and casual vietnamese shop. The only thing I can say is, it’s in the name, get the banh mi as they are absolutely delicious. Their crispy duck or chicken are amazingly delectable for the non traditional proteins. Their bread is soft yet crunchy, their mayo is smooth and tasty, and their helpings are generous like grandma used to serve. Additionally, their peanut sauce for the spring rolls is the truth. Fantastic viet food here, and I will definitely return over and over.
For a place that advertise the banh mi the pho is surprisingly really good and also filling. Viet Coffee was okay.
A few weeks ago, I came across this place while I was around Clement St. I've walked by it a few times before but always noticed that it always had a line and busy around lunchtime. I am one who never likes to line up for food in SF due to the fact that we can get good food anywhere we turn in this city. However, this particular day, I realised it was empty, but I found out later that I was lucky I came in a few minutes right before the lunch rush. I got myself a window seat facing the street and enjoyed the food that now, a few weeks later, I kept going back on a weekly basis a few times twice a week. Now it's like a Friday and sometimes Monday ritual to go walk around Clement St, pick up my sauce and yummy food around the area, and have something at Cafe Bunn Mi. Place is clean, Menu has variety of choices, Staff are amaizing and the food prep is super fast and my order was out within 10min in my case. The sandwiches are to die for eventho a little more expensive than a few of the places around the Avenues, but it's so worth it with the portions. And the noddle bowls are now becoming my favorite. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fast Vietnamese place around Clement St where food tastes good and the service is fast. I'd recommend going in a little early or after a lunch rush if u wanna take your time and enjoy your food. A 5star in my book, and I am glad I decided to walk in to try it out cause in 3 weeks, I think I have done 5 dine in and 3 times to go.
One of the best Banh Mi sandwiches I've ever eaten. I ordered the Smokey Vegetarian...it's got portobello mushrooms and eggplant. Wait, I just noticed they have Shaken Beef Salad! I'm definitely going to try that next time. The guys at the table next to us had pho. That really looked good too. Judging by the continual flow of people eating here and expanding and contracting line, this is a very popular place for lunch. This is a small restaurant, there aren't a lot of tables. Looks like mostly takeout. The decor and atmosphere is basic cafe, but you're not here for the ambience. The quality food is the draw and the fresh ingredients and speak for themselves. Easily one of the best eateries on Clement. Grab a book at Green Apple and head over to Bunn Mi for lunch! That's a fine Sunday afternoon.
Have come here a couple of times and it’s always been good. Initially, I had the grilled pork Banh mi and was impressed. I tried the beef one and I liked the pork better. Decided to try their other food. Had the garlic noodles with five spice chicken. The chicken came as a bone in leg with very prominent five spice flavor. There was also a nice crisp on the skin. Garlic noodles were not as chewy as I wanted but overall good. Vietnamese coffee was standard for me and can come hot or iced.
great vegetarian option in the inner Richmond in San Francisco! i ordered the Buddha Tofu Vietnamese Bahn Mi sandwich. crunchy bread, nice crispy breaded tofu, and super fresh veggies/toppings. good amount of spice and i was very full. cheap prices - it was just $9 plus tax and tip. but also $2.50 for a water bottle since they won’t give you water lol. would be great for takeout, too. very fast! as far as ambiance: it’s a walk-up counter with an old school, efficient vibe. you’re here for a good time not for a long time, although the size of the clock would tell you otherwise. i’ll be back soon!
Juicy / Crispy / Delicious / scrumptious. I’ve had my share of banh mi in San Francisco and Vietnam, and these bad boys are no joke. Incredibly yummy and generous on the size. By no means the cheapest sandwich, but “normal S.F. prices” and you got yourself a nice lunch.

This place had some really good cold vermicelli dishes. Looks grungy but food is delicious! The bowl looks as good as it tastes.

The fish banh mi was excellent!! Can’t wait to try the crispy duck and tofu ones next
Nice little shop. Awesome chicken wings. Also ordered their combo sandwich + pork sandwich. Quirky window booths offers isolation from the shop but felt a little like a fishbowl. Nice if you like watching ppl walk by.
Came here last year on a whim, and I'm surprised by the negative reviews. I ordered a pretty standard banh mi, but it was definitely the best banh mi I had in SF. Duc Huong may still edge it, but a great banh-mi in an unassuming store.
Limited seating - maybe 4 tables & a counter near the window. Grab something to go - super yummy Banh Mi, Rice Noodle dishes & Rice Plates. Everything is sooo good.

ordered takeout on their website and picked it up at the store. located on clement street around a lot of other asian restaurants and bakeries. prices are pricey for banh mi in SF but quality was good and they have some unique items like the duck banh mi. // grilled pork banh mi (11.50) // i ordered this banh mi with most of the options on it. i was satisfied with the amount of meat and vegetables in my banh mi. the grilled pork was good and i liked the pickled veggies and sauce. there was a jalapeño that added a kick to it. i appreciate that you can select what you want inside and there's an option to get two halves individually wrapped which is nice. id come back if i was in the area. definitely have had much cheaper banh mi in SF but this one tasted good!
Pretty small place to eat. Just a handful of tables. Cash only place no creditcard but a ATM machine next to counter. Sandwiches were not bad. They were overstuffed with meat and shredded carrots. Soup was pretty good with the sandwich as a side. Lots of people order to go. Average prices were about $10 for most of the items. Parking is not easy and might be a challenge at certain hours of the day. I would come back for more.
Small place with a cozy and lovely aesthetic. Both me and my friend got the crispy duck banh mi sandwich and liked it a lot, though I personally would have preferred more pickled daikon. The service was quick and the food was tasty. I would go again to try their other food! Sandwich wait time ≈ five minutes, cash only and after tax total was $13 and change.
Great value Vietnamese food. They have a wide variety of options for bahn mi sandwiches. The vermicelli bowls were good but I felt it could use more pickled daikon and carrot. The shaken beef rice plate was ok. Only a few tables inside to sit at.

Terrific crispy-duck bahn mi sandwich at this small Vietnamese spot in Clement St run by friendly staff. The sandwiches are generally good but they also have an assortment of noodles and pho. Cash only business !
Cash only. I ordered the combination pork and chicken sandwiches. Both were very bland and under seasoned. I don’t understand the hype. There’s an atm inside. Service was pretty quick. If you bank with chase, there’s a chase not too far from here for you to take out cash. I came on a weekday 11 am and the wait was only 10 mins. There’s outdoor seating but no inside seating during Covid.
they are taking credit card now perhaps they have some Vietnamese cuisine as pho or rice plates . but Bánh mì is the mix of American sandwiches and the prices are highest in San Francisco $11.50 +tax, while the other place only cost $7 - $9 per sandwich. overall their price are pretty high .
I order the Pho special. Pretty generous for noodle which is good for hungry tummies but the sliced meat quality is different from the Vietnamese restaurants I have had more lean meat basically just sliced beef. The price for a bowl Pho is $17+ is the higher side compare to a regular Vietnamese restaurant. The Vietnamese coffee came in a small cup. It has a lot acidity not too sweet than the Vietnamese I have had. I was not able to finish the the coffee.
The sandwiches are fancy and on the big portion side. I feel it would be ok without the cabbage and purple cabbage that alone to me is a bit extra but the pork belly sandwich I ate was delicious and tender. The Vietnamese coffee was too bitter for me I had to fill it up with water and was still bitter, I feel it lacked a bit more of condensed milk.
Casual Vietnamese joint, with a large menu. We came here for lunch and sat near the window. They have a couple tables outside for seating as well. There is only one washroom. Basically you pay and order, and you get a number while you wait for your food to arrive. Service is very no frills. We got the five spice chicken pho, five spice chicken Saigon noodle vermicelli, and steak Saigon noodle. They didn't include too much meat for the vermicelli dishes. I liked that the spring rolls were fresh. Keep in mind that they do contain pork. Unfortunately, I was disappointed that they didn't include any of the usual Thai Basil and other herbs in the vermicelli dishes. The pho broth was ok, nothing outstanding.
Love these Sandos. Usually never disappoints. I always get the pork. However the one time I try chicken I crunched on not one bone but two. One bone in both sides of the sandwich. As I’m getting older I try to avoid the dentist if possible. This coulda been bad. I still love this place but just a heads up.

They go to insane lengths to rip you off! We ordered a banh mi with no mayo and no jalapeños; asked them to substitute with some lemongrass sauce instead. They tacked on an extra dollar for barely a quarter teaspoon of a sandwich spread. We walked out before we paid. We live a few blocks away and this was one of our go to Bahn Mi spots. No more.
I’m really frustrated. We specifically asked for no cilantro. The cashier confirmed it. When I opened my to go order, there was so much cilantro in my pho. If it wasn’t frigid in the restaurant itself we would’ve opened it up and caught in and returned it immediately. Unfortunately that was not an option today. Please have your kitchen staff be more mindful of dietary requests.
Came here bc of GrubwithMike on Insta, and got their Crispy Duck Bun Mi. The most expensive sandwich on the menu and it was only okay. Bread was a little stale. Got two pieces of duck and it was mostly skin and fat which I guess is all duck in a way. But $19 for this, not worth it. Not coming back. The restaurant also smelled like old bleach when you walk in. Maybe they had an off day? I did go at 3:30pm on a Monday…

This store did not have soap for hand wash. Well, they did but the dispenser wasn’t usable. They are not practicing a good hygiene habit. The cashier did not seem to like her job. I was there at the counter thinking my order was ready after waiting for about 15 mins for a sandwich. It was also me being the only customer, and she yelled at me saying my order was not ready yet. I can’t recommend this restaurant to anyone. Go grab dim sum instead of going here.
The bahn mi I ordered was inedible. The pork had a foul smell that hit me immediately, and the sandwich looked carelessly assembled—visually unappetizing to say the least. The meat looked gray and slimy, and the overall presentation made me lose my appetite. I’ve had plenty of bahn mi before, and this was by far the worst. I ended up throwing it away. Definitely not coming back.
As I entered, the pretty young cashier was blowing her nose into a paper towel with both hands, then wiped her hands off with a paper towel, NEVER WASHED them before coming to the register to take my order. Disgusted, but grateful she would not be touching my sandwich, having already paid for an hour of parking, hungry, and looking forward to a great eggplant and veggie bahn mi for my birthday. I lost my appetite and decided I'd give away what ended up being an expensive CARROT SANDWICH. Never again!
