Came back home (Oakland) to spend my 51st birthday with my folks. Skyline graduate. I love the new change to this restaurant. Vibe was nice, open and comfortable. Enjoyed the meals and drinks as well. Definitely recommend and can express another Gem in the hills of ESO to the ATL. There isn’t anything like home. Thank you for opening this lounge it means a lot to this area.

I have enjoyed D. Monaghan's time and time again. It is a great place to grab a cocktail with friends or have a dinner date with a lover. I haven't eaten anything there that wasn't tasty to me. I like that different parts of the restaurant can give off different vibes. Having celebrated my birthday there twice is a good indication of what D. Monaghan' has to offer.

Best Sports Bar I've visited in the Bay Area! My sidecar's were delish!...Not too sweet with fresh squeezed lemon right in front of me. THIS atmosphere for a Monday Night Game OF FOOTBALL was ALL I NEEDED after a long day of work! Folks inside was definitely the after 5 working class😉 The Bartenders I believe (Nikki and Kanesha) energy was live, the wings were tasty the server Nikki suggested those (lemon pepper) Oh and the Quesadilla suggested by Kanesha were on hit. Finally found me a hidden jewel bar lounge right above 580 to catch my evening games right after work...Hope Thursday nights are cool like this too💯

I’m originally from New Orleans and love grits. I live in Union City and was driving 100 miles round trip to a restaurant in Concord Ca. because they had grits. Thank God I saw the Hill restaurant and called them to see if they had grits. Make a long story short, THE HILL is my new spot for their delicious grits!!!

A very nice restaurant with great food and drinks. They ran out of Mascoto but the dancers are hungry and they purchase plenty of food and drinks. This was a Sunday Chicago Steppin event. Love the dance it is just classy.

My wife and I love going to D Monaghan’s. It’s one of the few spots in Oakland that has it all: great food, great portions, great service, top shelf drinks, music for the moment, indoor or outdoor seating, comfortable and upscale seating and of.course a great local scene of people to enjoy your evening

Food and drinks are always great. Love taco Tuesday! Shrimp tacos are amazing. And the brunch is delicious and who doesn’t love bottomless mimosas. Definitely 10/10!

Hung out here one day with some friends. We watched some college football and had a few drinks. From the onset the vibe and people were really cool, warm, & inviting. Met a few folks from all walks of life and that were fans of various college and pro teams. No negative energy, mean stares, etc. just a good time not having to look over your shoulder worrying about anything else. The bartender (forget her name) was personable and attentive. After being there awhile I became hungry so I ordered the chicken Marsala and it was to die for! Definitely ordering it again but saw some other dishes that looked appetizing as well that I plan on trying.

Great place for groups to gather for a sports game event [multiple big flat screen tv areas] or just gather to have a party. The staff are warm, inviting, friendly and attentive. Monaghan's has a full bar and offer a great $1 Chicken Wing Wednesday special [multiple choice of dipping sauces.] Great family neighborhood place. Come see for yourself!

Nice neighborhood spot to relax, have a nice meal and a drink or two if you wish. Very nice employees. I had the steak sandwich with fries and my dining partner had the fish and chips with fries and coleslaw. Both were excellent.

This is definitely your neighborhood bar as well as my kind of bar. The drinks were great. I did not eat the food, but the plates I saw looked delicious. I will be going back soon. Check it out, I’m sure you will enjoy it.

What an amazing place with great food, staff, location, and great space! Can’t wait for the world to be opened for events, because the amount of space this restaurant has inside and out is perfect. We tried so much food and ate all of it!! (Our entire table was full of food) I can’t wait to come back and bring some people along. You will not be disappointed…

Just left with my family… their food is shockingly top tier.. very flavorful like Louisiana cooking… most of the restaurants out here don’t season their food, but this restaurant believes in using butter and seasoning etc. Today, we had the shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles and steak and eggs and it all was to die for. My hubby, myself and my mom came here last year and the quesadillas don’t require season but honey when you taste there’s, you’ll experienced the best you ever had.. meat is seasoned and even the cheese because even the dam quesadillas are good… Definitely a staple.. it would be ridiculous to have them cater my holiday party this year.

Sunday Brunch was fabulous, shrimp and grits were seasoned to perfection. And the chicken and waffles were just as good The waffles were soft but flaky and the chicken was moist and flavorful. Will definitely do Sunday Brunch again.

After a group run, a group of 12 or 16 of us met here for a meal. The ribs were terrific! I asked a server before ordering, and gratefully, she was correct! But the standout was now quickly we were served. The rate at which beers and meals came out was impressively quick for a group our size. I'm not stating you should show up with a group and expect quick service. However, the team there yesterday was on spot!

E

First time there. I was just a random balloonhead who happened to stop in. All the regulars were cool to me. The staff was on point, and they know how pour a legit cocktail. Had a fun time talking with a couple of the regulars. We got an appetizer when my date arrived and the food was delivered quickly and was good.

Great place! The space is amazing, and I love that it has indoor/outdoor capacity. The chicken wings, yummers. The 🍸 🍹 🍸 , well made. The service = is pretty good, better than a lot of places these days. The lounge area in front feels so homey. Great place to catch a game or grab a post work cocktail.

I had minimal expectations given the pandemic, but a few months back I placed a to-go order of 25+ tacos for Taco Tuesday. When I say the taco varieties, including the large crunchy taco were delicious, I’m not embellishing one bit! My taco crew of 8 sucked them all down their pie hole; no leftovers to be found. Yesterday me & the same crew, minus a few players sat on campus for a meal. Wow, the lemon pepper & buffalo flavored wing platters were amazing; the cook is good! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their entrees. I had the Mac & Cheese… yummy cheesy, smokey, deliciousness with bacon, damn delicious folks! Service was perfect. Our adult beverages were rock star status! Great job Danny & crew, we’ll be back soon. Thanks!

We went for a private, catered event, but stayed at the bar for the game. This place is clean, well-organized, has great cocktails and food. They have an extensive menu of bar bites and the friendliest staff around! The food prices a a bit on the high side. The local patrons made it welcoming. I’ll visit again for sure

The private event I attended there was well managed with a very attentive staff. Cheers to this newly opened venue for an impressive business opening.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ D.Monaghan’s On The Hill — A Hidden Gem with Soul I’ve had a few unforgettable experiences at D.Monaghan’s, and every time I go, I’m reminded why it’s one of my favorite spots in the city. One night, my friend and I stopped in for drinks and decided to try the vegan buffalo cauliflower — and wow. I’m not even vegan, but this dish completely blew us away. Crispy, flavorful, just the right amount of heat… we were raving about it for days. The drinks were just as amazing — clearly crafted with intention, and perfectly balanced. Another evening, I came back and had the salmon dinner, and it was absolute perfection. So often salmon gets dry or overcooked — but not here. It was moist, flaky, tender, and cooked exactly right. You could tell someone in the kitchen really cares. One of the most special moments I’ve had here was dining in the private room with the fireplace. I was with my granddaughter, her other grandmother (on her father’s side), and we shared a beautiful meal together. The food was, as always, delicious — but what stood out was the feel of the room. The glow from the fireplace was soft and warm, and the whole space felt incredibly cozy — personal, even. Like being in someone’s home, but with the charm and ease of being taken care of. It was intimate and meaningful in a way you don’t always expect from a restaurant. The service has been wonderful every time. One server in particular was so kind, I genuinely felt like I had met her in another life. And Danny, the owner, is the heart of the place. He treats every customer like a friend — which is rare, and deeply appreciated. D.Monaghan’s On The Hill isn’t just a place to eat — it’s a place to feel. To connect, to relax, and to enjoy something genuinely special.

I hardly ever leave reviews, nevertheless I couldn’t help but to notice I agreed with a lot if not most of the reviews. First and foremost it is a great local bar the atmosphere and the vibes are great. You always feel comfortable and welcome by anyone ever there. I do have to acknowledge, however that the service sometimes can be slow and sometimes it takes me a good 5 to 10 minutes to be acknowledged while at the bar for a drink. I think this would be my only complaint. for some reason service sometimes for a drink can be a little slow. I must admit the bartenders here are some of the best. The cocktails are always tasty and delicious and I like the attitude they all greet me with every time I come. My favorite bartenders here happen to be JOSE and ERIC 👌🏾👌🏾

Service was a bit SLOW at FIRST with our drink order in the dining room. There was a GAME on in the bar.😏 and our host was the SERVER as well? Apparently he was the ONLY server for the WHOLE place. After that we received EXCELLENT SERVICE from him👌 It was 5 of us. They need a little help like ANOTHER server?

I have lived in this area of the Oakland Hills for many years and met a friend at this restaurant after many many years. My first time there. For an evening after the Covid-19 restrictions were lifted and the scare was eased, I expected more professional service and class. Out door seating was seemingly a challenge to the staff and the food was below average. Suggestions would be to not pass beer in a cheap wine glass off a request for a glass of Rose'. REALLY! ....Thanks to the server who got it right on the second glass. Personality goes a long way after this challenging year. I will definitely be back for another pretty glass of Rose'. Also, a little music would have been nice for the early evening crowd. Peace

Good drinks, food and the staff was excellent. I ordered the burger medium well which was cooked to perfection! I also ordered a lemon drop which was wonderful! Two different staff members checked in to make sure the food and drinks were ok, and the service was fast. They played a great selection of blues which had the place rocking!

We had a really nice time here. Food wasn't the greatest, but for the price it was just fine. Live band, real friendly service, good time out on the patio. So different from the old Cesare's, more of a roadhouse thing. Happy hour was happen in'. We had a real nice time..........

Oakland Shading Company

Good food and drinks, good sized bar that is very actively involved in all the sports. The dining room has a great fireplace and when the weather is nice, outdoor seating. There is also an event room with occasional live music. They'd earn an additional star if the staff (front and back of house) was more attentive to the needs of diners and stepped up the speed of service.

The bartenders wasn't cool at all... they had no problem not serving us drinks til they felt like serving us drinks. The owner better beware. Bad service equals less returning customers. The bartenders friends aren't enough to keep your business open.

Service was prompt and the food tasty! But the bar service was not very good. The worker wasn't very pleasant at all. Wasn't thorough with answering my questions about the menu.

Portions here are amply-sized, but their capacious restaurant area was sadly ghost-town empty when we visited on a Saturday late afternoon. On the other hand, the bar was hoppin' with locals from all over eager to catch the latest game and chat with other like-minded guy buds. Food was just okay. My party had a deal from an online discount site, so we ordered nice big plates- a rack of ribs and a dish of prime rib. Unfortunately, besides the quantity served, I wouldn't call our orders anything special worth writing home about... the ribs were liberally dowsed in BBQ sauce, but really quite sweet- almost sickly, and the prime rib was dry and most definitely not the medium rare I'd wanted. Again, huge portions, though! Apparently no one ends up finishing a whole rack by themselves, no matter how hungry they are (according to our server). We ended up packing up a ton to bring home. The lady serving us was very personable and friendly, although strangely not that attentive, given the restaurant's lack of patronage at the moment... I think she gets hung up talking to other people, hah. Personally, I wouldn't come back, except to maybe try their bar food someday in the far future.

Waite staff touched my BF several times and tried to flirt with him. Boyfriend wasn't having it either. Not a way to get a bigger tip girl. OPEN PATIO DINING, Drinks and food were good.

Wait staff is mediocre at best and the music is insanely loud if you planned on having a conversation. Food is OK, prices are reasonable and it's really the only game in town for this neighborhood so I'd say it's fair

Nice neighborhood spot. Salmon burger was dry, old fashioned cocktail was VERY boozy, sweet potato fries were not a big enough portion.

Off of highway 13 in Oakland, this out of the way pub like eatery boasts a decent pozole on its menu. The servers are consistent and friendly. The smallish patio in the back is used for live entertainment by local musicians. A popular and casual place to hang out with friends.

The ambiance is a bit drab. The decor is non existent. They could use a decorating consultant. Although we had appetizers, they could have been better. For instance, the calamari was flavorless. The lemon pepper wings were good. The regular fried chicken just had a bunch of seasoning salt on top. Their grilled brussel sprouts were enjoyable but could use a bit of salt. I wish they'd use top shelf liquor when I order a drink such as a Purple Cadillac because it does imply quality in the name. The parking is scarce as they only have about five spaces in front of the restaurant. The service could be more diverse and they could be more attentive but all in all, I would go back.

Drinks, vibe and music were good. The service may have been more attentive at bar. We sat at bar tables. The waiter who serviced the restaurant and bar tables was not attentive at all. The place was not crowded. We had to actively get his attention for our order each time. He would pass us back and forth and not say anything. He came quick though once we put down cash to pay our bill. He said "no change". Heck yeah we wanted our change. The bill was $41 and change and we put down $60. No way this guy deserved an $18 tip.

I went for a private event with a no-host bar which meant going to the bar to get a drink. It took forever. The server did not even acknowledge us. She was slow and it took forever to get a mediocre drink. Banquet servers were nice. Suggest adding extra bartender when there is a private party.

It was alright. Nothing special. The price was too much for the quality of food. The kids meal was not kids size. It was adult sized amounts of food. And the kids hamburgers didn’t include any toppings. That was an extra $1 for any toppings that I think should have been included for a $9 kids meal. Then when they brought out the hamburger the guy didn’t know which hamburger he had in his hand and mixed up some of the orders. Then they didn’t remember the kids had ice cream. And we were the only ones in the restaurant so it’s not like they had others to serve.

The bar is lively during happy hour. But the staff is not accompanying to the customers. There was no hostess at the front to seat me. I waited patiently for 5 minutes before any staff noticed me. The dinner was okay, but the menu is limited to something for a bar.

The restaurant and the customer service (Jose and others) 5 stars ..unfortunately the new manager ruined the experience. when you're at a bar and having fun with people, you Laugh. You're socializing, you tend to get a bit loud. the new manager told us that we were being too loud and we have to be quiet. we all turned around and looked at her, I asked are you serious!? she says I'm very serious quiet down. In need of a new manager that's not gonna treat clients that spend good money there like that. We were the only ones she quieted down.

Edit: While they seem to have been dealing with some significant issues that were not their fault last time, I called in to order today and was told they're closed despite being well inside their posted hours. My previous statement stands. Great food, if you can get it. Great food when you can get it. Called to place a pickup order and was told they couldn't take orders until 5 and to call back. Called back three times after 5 and no one picked up. Don't know if I caught them on an off day or what, but hard to recommend a place you can't order from.

This is a neighborhood bar for real, for real. There are televisions if you want to watch a game, but I think more people are there to socialize. The bartender is nice, the food is aight and the appetizers cost more than a little bit. I heard there is a patio but I didn’t see it from the bar area. Parking can be hit or miss. *I do not recommend the buffalo cauliflower.

Staff is always changing, but the food is consistently good. My favorite dishes are the Buffalo Cauliflower, Fried Pickles, Crab Dip, and Old Bay Wings. The bathroom is always clean, and it draws an older crowd for the most part. I liked this place so much better when it had a pool table and juke box, but I'm happy to have it as my neighborhood sports bar.

It's a first time dining at D.Monaghans on the Hill on June 26, 2025. The name of the restaurant sounds appealing. For my male companion's birthday celebration, he chose DMonaghans. Okay, he booked the reservation for 7 PM. We arrived and their parking lot was full. Street parking was problematic and my companion ended up parking in a red zone half a block away, hoping his car would not be towed. Upon entering the restaurant, there is no host or maitre'd to escort us to a table. A nonchalant waiter told us just grab a table and seat anywhere. First time at any restaurant I usually will order an Arnold Palmer (1/2 tea, 1/2 lemonade). The beverage is to determine whether the quality of the food is delicious. In this case, the Arnold Palmer passed the test (4 star). Next up - eats. Eats: for starter, beet salad consisting of a spring mix, diced beets, thinly sliced orange, candied walnuts, diced goat cheese, topped with a balsamic vinaigrette. (4 star). Salmon with a wine glazed sauce with roasted potatoes and mixed vegetables was on point and delicious. It was fresh and moist. (4 star). My friend ordered the NY steak with the same sides. I'm not sure if he asked for medium well. Even though it was well-seasoned with rosemary, the texture was chewy, not tender. Was it cooked too long? Gristles? Wrong cut of meat? Then he asked for steak sauce. Waiter brought out a bottle of A1 steak sauce. My friend wanted Lea & Perrins worcestershire sauce. I know the next time my friend orders a steak he better specify the Lea & Perrins. (3 star) No room for dessert. We were full. However, that bread pudding probably would have been great. Inasmuch as I would like to give D Monaghans a 4 star rating, and there is no such thing as a 3.5 stars, either I round it up or round it down. In this case, it's rounded down due to lack of attentive service, parking and a steak with gristles. Overall: it can be a hit or it can be a miss. Future visit? Might, then might not.

Not liking this place anymore. When you want a drink and some munchies after a concert don't go here. They don't even serve food after 9 pm and drinks are waters down. Use to be a fun place. They didn't even have my drink.

We used to think this was a 4-5 star restaurant. As we remembered the bar and dining room had separate menus. The bar sevred small bites and sandwiches, the dining room was a nice dinner house. On our last visit we were told it was the same menu. We sat in the bar, it was extremely noisy and our server was very unattentive. He never even checked to see if we needed drink refills.

A friend told me about this place when I was visiting the Bay area so I decided to stop in to watch the football game. He mentioned that the food was good, but I just opted for the wings and they weren't anything to write home about, under seasoned for lemon pepper wings and overcooked. I really wanted to like this shot but, the service sorry was terrible. A friend and I sat at the bar, not a big bar at all. There were 3 bartenders and between the 3 of them they yielded the worse service. They were very slow and not keeping their eye on those at the bar. I literally watched a lady patiently wait 15 minutes just for someone to acknowledge her. Then she waited another 15 minutes for her drink. They were the same with me however I let it go because it was the last day of my trip and I was there for the game. Maybe when I'm in town again I'll give them another shot on a game night but as of right now it's a no for me!!

I only had a margarita here, but it was probably the worst I've ever had. It was too sweet and had a funny taste. People seem to like it here though and it seems like the place to be if you want to cheer loudly for your team in good company.

I really hate to give a negative review on Any business, especially an African-American business but employers really need to do better research when hiring employees. I was there for the Juneteenth celebration, accompanied by friends that I invited to share the experience. It was a nice crowd and a good vibe going on. I went to the bar to order drinks for me and my guests and was greeted with a very rude and unkindly bartender that overlooked us repeatedly as we tried to order drinks. The bartender even went as far as taking orders from those that were behind us in line. When I finally made eye contact with her, I read off the first drink and before I could give her the other two drinks, she went on to make other drinks. When I finally caught her attention to order the other two drinks, I was told in her words” The way we do things around here we multitask so you need to place your orders at the same time” I really had to pause on my response and remember that I was there to celebrate the culture. If it was any other day I would’ve reminded her how unprofessional she was and how horrible she was at making drinks. After that, we entered the dining area to order our food. A young lady walked up to the table, we thought she was a waitress. She didn’t say anything just stood very, very close to one of my guests that was sitting on the end. She left the area and came back with another woman, and they both stood there in front of our table, not given reason why they were there or apologizing for invading our space. Continue to point and take photos of someone that was seated at the patio area. In spite of it all the food was great and we had a nice time.

Inadequate parking, very crowded. Drinks and food OK. Patrons often park on adjacent residential streets and have caused accidents. Do not recommend if you're looking for a classy place to bring a date -- much better options available in nearby Montclair.

If the was a no star option this would definitely receive one! This place has gone downhill since Sharon & Dan sold it. Liquor is never stocked with popular booze selection. Food comes served cold, looks like left overs from 2 nights ago. Wait staff & bartenders look like they are always high or drunk..possibly both. Lots of old hippie looking stoners hangout on the little patio in front smoking their bud. Younger folks come for games and coke. Service, Atmosphere, Food/Drink quality equals A Big Zero. New owners have no clue!

This restaurant is but a shadow of it's former self. We were very disappointed in it's "rebirth" as a sports bar with food. It used to be a respectable place to eat, with good entertainment on busy nights. Now the menu reads like a limited 'bar' menu served between lunch and dinner. The problem is that IS the ONLY menu. There were a few interesting beers listed but they we're out of both of my choices. I opted for a diet Pepsi. If you are on a healthy, lite or restricted diet, this is not the place for you. We were told that none of the menu items (including the specials) had vegetables on the side. There were three specials on the menu on a Saturday night. I was forced to order a Ceaser side salad for $10. Not worth it. The pasta dish I had was tasty though. The bill for four of us with drinks $150. Our waitress was not very experienced and the bus boy tried to serve my entré on top of my salad bowl and plate. Save your money.

First of all, they didn't have the ingredients for my drink, and secondly, we had to wait an hour for our food! If this establishment is supposed to be a sports bar, you should have adequate staff to accommodate your clientele!!! I will never come back here.!!

I normally like to support small businesses and went to this restaurant because it appeared to have good reviews; I'm just puzzled why. The waitress seemed kind and was willing to accommodate our dietary requests, but other than that, the service and food were horrible. The restaurant was freezing (no heat aside from a fire) and we had to wear our coats inside while we dined. Even though the restaurant was practically empty, we ended up waiting a full hour from the time we placed our order to the time we were served. My chicken was dry, my daughter's Alfredo fettuccini was bland, and my husband's steak was disgusting (it tasted grainy as if it was a cheap cut of meat that had been doused with meat tenderizer and sat for too long). They served water without ice and we had to ask on more than one occasion if they could refill our glasses during our long wait. To top it all off, my daughter developed a bad stomach ache by the time she finished eating. I can only surmise she had food poisoning from her meal. Our bill came to $100 for three entrees and an appetizer (no drinks). Maybe it's a good place for cocktails, as the bar section appeared to be full of people by the time we were leaving, but I would never recommend going to D.Monaghans on the Hill to eat. Who knows, maybe we got poor service because we didn't order alcohol?

First time at this establishment. We wanted to support local businesses and was very disappointed in the food n service here. The best thing was the beet salad. Asked the food server if they had more appetizers because online, there was a variety of them listed. The food server said she wasn't sure cause she has only been there two weeks. Then she had to come and ask me what our entree was again. I ordered the chicken marsala and was disappointed...three small thinly sliced chicken breast, mashed potatoes with no gravy n boiled mixed veggies. My boyfriend ordered the pesto shrimp fettuccine n it only came with 5 small shrimps? For the prices the restaurant was charging, they could have at least put 6 in there. We paid cash and when the server brought back the change, I can't believe how many pennies and small change she brought back lol Unfortunately, we will definitely not be back.

I had a truly disappointing experience at this restaurant. The wait time was absolutely horrendous—we waited 55 minutes just to receive a basic cheese omelet. The menu clearly stated that the omelet would include mushrooms and avocado, but none of that was on our plate. My kids were starving by the time the food finally arrived. Ideally they should close the restaurant since they don't have ANYTHING.
