Island Shack Albee Square Reviews
Oh gosh, the food good, ya see! I'm at this spot whenever I can because I love good food - and when I tell you everything on the menu is fire, I mean it. Flavors are rich, authentic, and always hit the spot. What truly keeps me coming back though? The consistency. Every visit, the food is on point and the vibes are just right - welcoming, warm, and full of energy. And I have to shout out Toya --remarkably polite, always serving with a smile, and just a joy to be around. Service is 10/10 every time. If you love real island food and good vibes, this place is a must.
Being new to the neighborhood this restaurant definitely has potential with its excellent dishes and amazing customer service definitely somewhere to go if your looking for good West Indian food they just opened and I’ve already been there a few times trying almost everything on the menu and I will be back
Kudos to LaToya and the Island Shack team. Housed in the old Smoke Joint location, Island Shack has filled a void in the Fort Greene community. The menu is authentic Trinidadian/Caribbean cuisine and the doubles for lunch is a major hit!!!! If you work downtown, try their affordable lunch specials. If you're looking for a neighborhood bar where everyone knows your name, pull up and make yourself at home. Every Sunday there is a live DJ party that ends when folks have folks get tired from dancing! This spot hits on every criteria- food, drinks, vibes! Go and tell them Jay sent you!
What a delightful meal with a relaxing atmosphere! We enjoyed several dishes from the menu including curry shrimp with roti, jerk chicken wings and fried plantains. Everything was fresh and delicious and the service was fantastic. I’ve recommended Island Shack to all my friends because it’s perfect for family outings and date nights alike!
Best place in Fort Greene! Latoya runs the most fun spot in town and makes you feel like family the moment you walk in. Great food, drinks, and vibes. If you want to dance Latoya wants you dancing. If you want to eat, she wants you eating the best Caribbean food in the city and she delivers!! Her husband is awesome and they take care of everyone. Incredible spot.
Absolutely delicious 😋. Great food. We had the corn soup, jerk wings were the best dry rub (my favorite. I asked for tamarind sauce on the side. Great pairing), and bake & shark). The rum punch was punching 💣! Let's not forget the vibes, music was pumpin! I high recommend this spot! Will make this spot a regular!
I had an amazing experience at Island Shack Caribbean Restaurant in Brooklyn. The specialty rum punch was absolutely fantastic, full of flavor and the perfect balance of sweetness. I also tried the special order stew salmon, and it was immaculate—cooked to perfection with rich, authentic Caribbean spices. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere was vibrant. I highly recommend this spot for anyone craving delicious Caribbean cuisine. Although Ive been many times this time me and my husband were particularly wowed!! And of course we will be back!
The staff is so warm and welcoming the energy and vibes are so so good! The drinks are amazing and well priced! & the food is authentic! Such a great addition to the neighborhood definitely will be a repeat customer! ❤️❤️❤️
"Island Shack, you're the real MVP! I just had the most incredible dining experience that transported me straight to the Caribbean, minus the plane ride 😊. The vibes, the flavors, the service – everything was on point! The food was one word… addictive! What truly sets Island Shack apart is the atmosphere. Walking in, I felt like I was a world away from Brooklyn. The decor, the music, the staff's warm smiles – it all screamed Caribbean charm. For a moment, I forgot I was in the States and felt like I was island-hopping without leaving the city 🌴. If you're craving a taste of the islands without the island prices, Island Shack is the spot. Trust me, you won't be disappointed! 10/10 would recommend and return" 🌟👍.
Absolutely love Island Shack. My Favorite is the Corn Soup🥰 When I visit they know me. They nicknamed me "Corn Soup" because I ordered it so much. Yummy.... They are very welcoming. Music and atmosphere is nice.
I experienced a delicious meal and caring staff at this restaurant. I visited for lunch with a friend today and we were delighted by the authentic West Indies course. The spices and flavors were extremely impressive for a traditional authentic jamaican restaurant. The service was above average. We ordered oxtail and rice & peas. It was one of the best I ever had in the longest while. The experience was really good. I’d love to visit again. I'd recommend it as a nice place to go with friends, family, or a partner.
What a find! I was told this place is mostly food from Trinidad, I’m no expert on food from the Caribbean, but it was bomb. The flavors were incredibly well-balanced and everything was cooked to perfection. I also loved the sorrel take on a hibiscus infusion, sweet, spiced, refreshing. We got the jerk chicken and the shrimp roti, mouth-watering. They were out of the corn soup ;( I will come back for it though, I hear it’s amazing.
Excellent service, well priced and delicious! Was quite load but was kind of a bar style so we didn't mind at all.
This space was so lovely and the food was delicious. It will be a part of my memories forever. I loved the presentation and the roti skin was so delicious. I would definitely come back here. The sorrel was very tasty. Overall I had a phenomenal experience.
Amazing food, great flavours, large portions. Delicious
The restaurant has a cozy/homey atmosphere with refreshing drinks and tasty food. Although it is a little pricey, it is in line with other restaurants in the neighborhood, and the portions are large. Also worth mentioning the waitress was very friendly. If you like goat and/or ox tail, this place is well worth a visit.
WOW! DELICIOUS! + THE BEST HAPPY HOUR (12pm - 7pm) !!! Stopped in on a whim and so glad I did. Amazing Jerk Chicken wings, the Trini Corn Chowder was a spicy yet rich knockout. I cannot wait to come back to try even more authentic island dishes. Latoya - you doin it right! :D
Excellent Caribbean food with a great level of heat. The roti goat curry, jerk chicken wings and mango chow were all great. Service was also very attentive.
Absolutely my favorite restaurant in Fabulous Ft. Greene BK ! The Square’s open area out front and super cozy atmosphere inside gives you a beautiful island vibe and everyone’s friendly. The music and guests DJ’s had me dancing after my amazing dinner! Everything on the menu is excellent and I kept going back to Island Shack for more. LaToya is so bubbly and beautiful and makes you feel like you’re home with family eating her amazing food! The drinks are delicious and the bar area is full of excitement any day of the week!! Cheers to everyone !!
It’s always the authentic eateries that strike a chord with me! Absolutely INCREDIBLE goat curry with buss up shut (roti) the goat was so tender and falling off the bone, the curry sauce was absolute perfection and great for dipping the roti in. The pumpkin and potato came separately to the curry which I think is genius to not mix up the flavours. The roti was cooked and torn up to perfection. Really authentic and you could tell the chef has made this for years and perfected the recipe. I will be thinking about this dish for days to come. lady who served me was an absolute angel as well, had a million things to do at once and all by herself but was attentive with great customer service skills, place was clean, good atmosphere and vibe with music playing and a bar in the middle with decent seating options for diners. 10/10 will be back
Thank you Eddie! That was the best Bake and Shark I’ve had in the city. Excellent customer service, great food and conversation. Looking forward to our next visit.
I’m so happy to have island shack in the neighborhood! I ordered takeout for dinner when they first open and the oxtail stew had me hooked. Recently went back and dined in their super cute little dining room. So charming and cozy, perfect date spot or girls night. Honestly the jerk chicken was probably the best I’ve ever had! Super moist and would love to douse almost anything in that sauce. Can’t wait to go back and try more of their menu!

I'd happily eat here again soon. This restaurant deserves special recognition beyond five stars. The serving size is substantial and the salad tasted clean. Complementarily, the staff maintains friendly attitudes. I'm anticipating trying more dishes next time.
Many locals mentioned Island Shack as their go-to place for good food. No line-up needed and employees work rapidly! This place ensures value matches price points. Their dishes please consistently and their staff pleases equally. The cost is proportional to the experience provided.
I'm particularly attached to this spot. Every bite here improves your mood instantly. Employees create memorable experiences through kindness. Their dishes highlight natural flavors. When nearby again, I'm definitely returning.

Our food was seasoned well. I had jerk salmon. Not spicy and very moist. It came with a mixture of vegetables and not the typical broccoli. My friend had curry chicken and buss up shot. It arrived in several little pots. Very cute. The music had us jamming in our seats. Unfortunately, happy hour is only at the bar which was disappointing. I still ordered the rum punch which was heavy on the Curacao. I like this version and yes I could taste the liquor in a good way. Our waiter was a sweet teenage boy who was knowledgeable about the food. I'll come back when I'm in the area.
KALIN IS AMAZING! HE IS SUCH A POILTIE YOUNG MAN! HE WAS OUR SERVER TODAY! VERY ATTENTIVE .MY CHICKEN WAS A.LIL CHILLY HE DID APOLOGIZE AND BROUGHT IT BACK AND ALL.WAS WELL..IT'S VERY COZY BUT A NICE VIBE MUSIC IS GOOD DRINKS WERE 10!!!!WE WILL VISIT AGAIN !!!

As a Trinidadian who knows what good roti tastes like, I had high hopes for this spot. It's a cozy little restaurant with a welcoming vibe, and the staff are genuinely friendly. The bar area is well set up, and the music adds a great atmosphere—definitely a place you can vibe and relax in. However, when it comes to the food, I was disappointed. The roti I ordered was not soft and tasted undercooked—far from the fluffy, well-done roti I’m used to back home. I also ordered the jerk chicken and was shocked to find a piece of metal scrubbing wire in my meal, which is not only off-putting but a serious safety issue. It’s clear the restaurant is understaffed—the owner is doing everything from bartending to serving—so be prepared for a bit of a wait. I truly respect the hustle and effort, but the food needs real attention if this place wants to win over folks who know and love authentic Caribbean cuisine. That said, I’d come back for the drinks and the music, but not for the food—at least not until the kitchen levels up.
Food taste good but the portions are a bit unaligned. For the rotis I ordered there was more potato than there was chicken, chic peas and barely any sauce. For the price, not at all impressed.
Great service and atmosphere was vibrant but the food was very mid and over price . We ordered rice and stew chicken but the chicken has only bone . And we also ordered curry chicken and rice but it doesn’t taste like curry and and I requested for extra curry but came out like watery soup , the callaloo came out looking like soup but was good

This food was absolutely horrible. I stumbled in here late at night right before they were about to close. I don’t eat meat so i opted for a vegetarian dish. As soon as I got in the car, i tore the bag open so excited to eat. The food was bland and tasteless; I was so aggravated. So I went back in the resturant asking for a return or refund. The worker gets a call from the owner so she must’ve been stalking the cameras. she tells the worker i can’t get a refund although i barely touched the plate and everything was still there in tact. They opted for a free drink next time i come in- Which is pointless because i never plan on returning. Duped out of $22. Which is absurd because why was I paying $22 for a small plate of rice and some uncooked vegetables in the 1st place? Never again, and I suggest you don’t either. This is NOT authentic Jamaican food. It’s white washed Jamaican food in a white neighborhood. Go for the atmosphere because that seemed nicer than the actual food!
I was extremely disappointed with my experience here. The food did not taste fresh at all, it lacked flavor, and the texture suggested it had been sitting out for quite some time rather than being prepared to order. What made the experience even worse was the service. The owner was not just unfriendly but outright rude when I politely raised my concerns about the meal. Rather than addressing the issue or offering a solution, they responded with a dismissive and defensive attitude that made me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Dining out should be an enjoyable experience, but between the subpar food and the poor treatment, I left feeling frustrated and unsatisfied. I will not be returning and cannot recommend this place to others.
I'm in NY and thought I would get Roti and this was the closest place. Roti and curry chicken was horrible!! It taste like a bad chicken pot pie. I paid $36 for 2 curry chicken roti. I don't recommend this place. Too pricey and the food was terrible. A waste of my money. I want my money back. I should have known the food was going to be nasty because the place was empty. I got my food to go. The service and atmosphere were good, the only bright spot. Won't be going there again.
I wanted to try and support this new business that replaced the great Peaches that was at this location. I am highly disappointed, first of all my account was charged twice then I had to wait for a longer time than expected because they didn’t have any of what I ordered ready!…no problem payment was taken care of and fine I’ll wait! I get home and take my food out and it’s nothing worth the amount I paid, so I say hey let’s taste it, might make up for it in FLAVOR! Gosh was I wrong…ha! My curry shrimp with white rice order was not good at all! Shrimp was over cooked, rice was undercooked! Vegetables were barely cooked! My jerk chicken with rice and peas order where I asked for extra ox tail gravy on the rice was even worse! The chicken was undercooked and taste like they just threw “jerk” sauce/seasoning on it. Rice and peas were dry as can ever be as well as my side order of curry shrimp, dry! I had to put my own sauce from home to try to enjoy it Not Every Caribbean/Jamaican spot can cook/make good food. They all fake Real food people know flavor and great food when they taste it I definitely will tell my people not to eat here because they will waste your time! And your money! Not to mention that they didn’t even know what type of salmon they serve (filet or steak) when I asked the greeter/waiter he went and asked the “owner” and he came back and said steak, then I said ok I don’t want that because it has bones then he said there’s no bones it’s filet! Dude which one is it? How do your employees don’t know what’s on the menu and how do you not know as a owner and you give your employee false information to a customer! Save yourselves Thank you :)
So I was craving Caribbean food and did my google Search and came across Island Shack it says it opens at 4pm so I got there exactly at 4pm and was the first customer. I was greeted my a worker who informed me that the kitchen wouldn’t be ready until 430 but I can still put in my order for the food, I ordered escovitch fish with rice and peas and macaroni pie at approx 445pm the food came out I’m like that was quick and as the waiter hands me the food you can immediately smell that foul stinky fishy smell so I cut piece of it to smell it and sure enough it smells like rotten fish the macaroni pie was not freshly made it was stale macaroni pie which was warmed up because the outside of it was hot but the inside of it was cold I ended up getting oxtail instead of the fish and it wasn’t worth the price, the food is tasty but way too pricey you’re better off going to golden crust or other restaurants to get more for your moneys worth.
Edited on 6/29/25 in response to the owner's claim that they are open. I went to this restaurant on Father's Day, 6/15/25, and there were notices from Marshalls taped to the door and enclosed glass veranda. Boards were in some of the windows. It was dark inside and looked closed for business. Since it was drizzling and overcast that day, we left and went somewhere else. I was really looking forward to eating there on Father's Day.
Sadly this place is a total ripoff on take out. For $28 you should get a filling Jerk Chicken meal. Not here. 5 measly pieces of chicken and the leg is the biggest piece. There is much more affordable and bigger-portioned Caribbean food all throughout Brooklyn. Be advised.

I went here this Tuesday at 4:15 pm and the door was locked. There was a lady inside talking on the phone looking at me like I was bothering her. She eventually unlocked the door. I asked her what time she’d be open and her response was “I don’t know I’m setting up now.” If she doesn’t know how long it takes to set up, why does the business hours indicate they are open from 2 pm on Tuesdays? Furthermore, I commuted to Brooklyn because I was craving Trinidadian food and this was the response I got. No apologies, no indication about when things would be ready, etc. Save your time if you’re commuting from far. I hope the food smells and tastes better than her stank attitude. Her attitude reflects poorly on this business.
I’ve traveled to this restaurant a few times only to be greeted with the normalized, “The kitchen is closed’ although their site indicates otherwise. I understand that things can happen beyond the establishment’s control, however, maybe they should update their site in real-time so customers can plan accordingly. I will admit, the food is delicious BUT, the inconsistent hours of operation is a huge turnoff. Do better!
It was supposed to be open and it said Open when I looked it up on Google maps. I got there and the lady said it's closed and that they're having a "meeting ". She said it would be open in an hour. I took an Uber just to go there on my way to the airport. I wasted $17 just to have her tell me it's closed when it wasn't supposed to be!! Very poor so-called customer service.
