SHIROKURO Albee Square Reviews
I visited on a Monday after a recommendation from a coworker, and the experience exceeded expectations. Both the food and service were outstanding. I opted for the 15-course omakase at $90, which was an excellent value given the quality and presentation. The staff were warm and engaging, and I had a great conversation with the manager, who truly stood out for his hospitality. He even offered me a sample of the chicken wings from their sister restaurant next door (connected) a thoughtful and memorable touch. The ambiance is beautiful, perfect for photos or a relaxed evening with friends. As someone who works at a three-Michelin-star Japanese restaurant, I can confidently say the fish quality here was impressive. Definitely worth a visit.
The amount of care and precision that goes into each morsel is undeniably impressive. Our host/sushi chef David was phenomenally talented, informative, and friendly. What an amazing experience. I recommend it whole-heartedly! Also, did I mention the incredible aesthetic of the bar’s decor? This is a must see destination. Cheers all!
Came to shirokuro on New Year’s Eve and decided to try their omakase option. It was my first time experiencing omakase, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was completely blown away. Each dish and bite that came out was delicious and beautifully prepared. It truly exceeded my expectations. The staff did an amazing job explaining every course in detail, which made the experience even better. The food was extremely fresh, and the drinks were exceptional. They also have a speakeasy hidden in the back of the restaurant, which we didn’t get a chance to visit this time, but we will definitely be returning to check it out.
Shirokuro in NYC is pure fun in restaurant form. Bold flavors, playful plating, and dishes that hit hard without taking themselves too seriously. Every bite feels energetic and creative, like the kitchen is showing off in the best way possible. It’s the kind of place where you’re already planning your return visit halfway through the meal—loud, exciting, and absolutely delicious.
We celebrated my 21st birthday at Shirokuro and it was a truly wonderful experience. Enrique, our fantastic Omakase chef, guided us through the exquisite Kuro nine-course tasting menu. The sushi was simply exquisite. The entire staff was welcoming, and the atmosphere was both pleasant and genuinely family-friendly. Thank you for making my birthday a truly memorable night!
It was our first time in shirokuro few days ago for a belated birthday celebration, and the Omakase experience was delightful. From the overall aesthetics to the immaculate staff, the first impression was great. The chef is friendly and our 15 course omakase was carefully orchestrated with fresh ingredients that exceeded our expectations. We were full and satisfied. Definitely recommend!

This is a fantastic spot for Japanese food lovers. The design is truly original and unique, giving the place a special vibe. The food is delicious and well-presented, and the staff is super friendly and attentive. A great place to enjoy a tasty meal in a cool, welcoming atmosphere.
This restaurant is like stepping into a drawing — everything is black and white, and it feels like you’re dining inside a sketchbook. The design is so creative and unique, it makes the whole experience unforgettable. It’s a Japanese restaurant, and the food was just as amazing as the atmosphere: fresh, flavorful, and beautifully served. The combination of the artistic space and the delicious food makes it a must-visit spot. Highly recommend if you’re looking for something different and memorable!
All the dishes here are really good. I’ve been here a few times for the omakase and at this price it’s not easy to find this kind of quality in NY. The ingredients are fresh and the portions are generous. The staffs are very kind and explain the food well. Also, if you go through the back door, there’s a speakeasy style place where you can get fried chicken and beer. It’s nice to go there after your meal.
I’ve seen this placed on my feed and I finally got to see the place for myself. The place is so nice, well decorated. Definitely felt like I stepped into a comic book strip. Service was very friendly, no wait time since it was 9pm. Shrimp Tempura: was delicious, well done and fresh. Tempura itself was crunchy and tender. Very flavorful. Salmon handroll: was also very tasty, and fresh! Loved the display. Not too much salmon but a nice balance. Pork Gyoza: had to be broken apart but it was hot and yummy. Loved the sauce it came with, maybe it was a chili sauce? Match Mochi Ice cream: was pretty standard, I did like the yuzu jam on top. Very tasty and a good dessert, just wish it wasn’t 1 mochi and more like 3. Not sure if it’s worth getting again.
From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a friendly staff. One of my favorite dishes was the fried squid legs. They were perfectly crispy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The fresh sushi omakase was the highlight my meal. Each piece was a work of art. Overall, I highly recommend Shirokuro and I can't wait to return!
We had a wonderful Mother’s Day lunch at Shirokuro with my husband and our daughter — and it was such a memorable experience from start to finish. First of all, we were so happy to see that they offered a Kids Bento Box. Our daughter usually has a picky appetite, but here she enjoyed every bite — from the onigiri to the shrimp tempura, gyudon, and noodles. It made the meal so much more enjoyable for all of us knowing she was happy and full. The interior design was absolutely stunning — it truly felt like we had stepped into a drawing. Every detail was hand-painted in black and white, creating an immersive 2D world that was unlike anything we’ve seen in New York. Even the stairs leading down to the restroom were part of the artwork, and it brought so much joy just walking through the space. My husband and I ordered the Kuro Omakase, which was 15 beautifully curated courses for just $90. The quality, presentation, and creativity of each dish were outstanding — definitely one of the most value-packed omakase experiences we’ve had in the city. Shirokuro is not just a restaurant, it’s a full experience — combining art, atmosphere, and incredible food. We’ll definitely be coming back, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for something special and unique in NYC.
3.5 / 5.0 - My bf chose Shirokuro for our dinner date and I’d also actually had this place bookmarked. We both love sushi and were also very curious to see the interior. I wanted to love this place, but have some mixed feelings about it… [the atmosphere] The dining area was more spacious than I’d expected and the 2D decor was very unique. The design behind the sushi counter was cool, too. [the menu] We sat at the sushi counter and chose the 15-course omakase, which is $90+ per person. (They also have a 9-course one for $60+.) The 15-course omakase came with a plate of 3 small appetizer bites, chawanmushi, 10 pieces of nigiri, a hand roll and miso soup. [the service] Our main server was very polite and our sushi chef was nice and friendly, too. However, the service was a bit slow, especially for sake and miso soup. The sake also arrived lukewarm, even though we’d asked for it hot. [the food] It wasn’t off to the best start with the appetizer bites not being of the best quality. The fish on the nigiri was larger compared to some other sushi spots, with various non-traditional toppings, but also tasted a bit fishier. The final nigiri, though, which was fatty tuna with uni on top, was delicious. And because of the slow service, our server added uni in our hand roll, which was one of the best hand rolls I’ve ever had. We then waited over 10 min for our miso soup, which was so salty I couldn’t even drink half of it. So it went from one extreme to another, making it difficult to rate. They really do need to change the miso soup, though, and maybe some of the fish.
Enjoyed 16 course omakase at Shirokuro. When you step into 2 D restaurant, you feel like you are traveling to Japan. My friend and I had a great time celebrating my birthday. Out of 16 course Kuro omakase, I enjoyed some of nigiri sushi (toro and hamachi especially) and the hand roll. Service was professional and friendly. Our waiter was so sweet and informative! He explained every course we had and made delicious lychee cocktail. We really enjoyed the unique decor of the restaurant. Color truly popped out with 2D background and felt like we were sitting inside comic book. Definitely recommend to people who want to dine in unique place in NYC.
We had the omakase. We liked the traditional egg custard and miso soup. There was a wide variety of fish. Many courses have skin for flavor and texture. The fish was okay and felt almost less special when multiple pieces were served at once. The black and white decor is fun but tough to maintain. We would recommend the hand rolls. The cocktails were all way too sweet, even the highball.
The only reason to go is the awesome decor. The food was fine. We had a reservation and asked if we could sit at the bar last minute. They politely said no that a few people were coming in soon and we would only have 45 min which isnt enough time to enjoy the Omakasi. No problem. Except from the moment we sat to when we left the bar remained empty. They lost what would of been $90 each from us.
The food at Shirokuro was solid—good flavors, well-prepared—but ultimately not worth the price point. What really defined our experience, though, wasn’t the food but the service. Our first waiter was shockingly rude to our table—so much so that the restaurant actually switched our server mid-meal. We were one of the first reservations of the evening, so it wasn’t a matter of them being overwhelmed or understaffed. There was simply no explanation for the way we were treated. It’s hard to ignore how targeted and unwarranted the behavior felt. The new server was polite, but the damage was done—the tone of the night was already soured. For the price, I’d expect not only better service but a baseline of respect. Unfortunately, Shirokuro didn’t deliver.
We went to Shirokuro for what we expected to be a proper omakase experience - unfortunately, the service completely ruined what could have been a good meal. Shirokuro offers both à la carte and omakase, and when making the reservation we specifically asked to sit at the sushi bar. We were told on the phone that this was possible if we chose the omakase, which we did. Upon arrival, we reiterated that we were there for omakase and wanted bar seating, only to be told that the bar was “fully booked.” This was puzzling, as there were clearly several empty seats visible at the counter. Throughout the evening, we were repeatedly told that “reservations were coming” for those seats. We stayed for over two and a half hours, during which time multiple bar seats remained empty and no one ever showed up for them. We politely asked more than once to be moved, because an omakase experience at a table is simply not the same, and were consistently dismissed. It became very clear that we were being lied to. The level of customer service was, frankly, the worst I’ve experienced in a restaurant. The responses were dismissive, unprofessional, and showed zero respect for the guest experience. Drawing a line between customers - some deemed worthy of the bar, others not - completely defeats the purpose of omakase and leaves a very sour taste. As for the food: the sushi itself was good. However, for the price point, there are far better omakase options in New York that offer not only equal or better quality, but also transparency, warmth, and respect. Design and aesthetics don’t make up for poor hospitality. In the end, this place feels like a trap, with style over substance, and an experience that prioritizes image rather than the guest. A huge disappointment, and not somewhere I would recommend if you’re looking for a genuine omakase experience.
I'll be honest. This place is only good for taking Instagram photos. The food is good, but very, very expensive for Europeans. The service is non-existent, there is only one lady who is a waitress and takes reservations at the door, serves takeaway meals, etc. She has no time to attend to the customers already inside. People enter the establishment, glance at the menu, and leave. The place is reverberant and has a cold, uninviting atmosphere. I only recommend visiting it as a photographic attraction. This place lacks life, warmth, and customer interest.
