Umberto’s Clam House If you want a real Little Italy seafood-and-red-sauce classic, Umberto’s is the kind of place that reminds you why certain NYC restaurants become institutions. It’s not trendy or experimental. It’s old-school, loud, busy, and built around doing a handful of iconic Italian-American seafood dishes extremely well. The must-order here is the baked clams. They come out hot, garlicky, and rich, with that perfect balance of briny clam flavor and buttery breadcrumb topping. This is the dish that sets the tone: bold, traditional, and made to be eaten immediately while it’s sizzling. Pasta is the other reason to come. Linguine with clam sauce is a signature for a reason: clams, garlic, olive oil, and a clean, salty-seafood depth that tastes like the kitchen isn’t trying to impress you with tricks, just doing it right. If you prefer heat, the hot red clam sauce (and fra diavolo-style options) give you that slow-simmered, spicy, tomato-and-seafood punch that feels like classic NYC Italian comfort food. Appetizers are worth it too if you’re hungry. Fried calamari is a solid choice when it’s coming out crisp and hot, and the seafood salad is a great “lighter” start if you like that olive oil, garlic, and lemon style that lets the seafood speak. If you’re in the mood for something richer, dishes like lobster ravioli or shrimp scampi-style plates are popular for a reason: indulgent, filling, and very satisfying. Now, set expectations: this is Little Italy on Mulberry Street. It can be crowded, energetic, and fast-paced, especially at peak hours. Service is more “keep the room moving” than laid-back fine dining. You’re here for an iconic neighborhood experience and excellent seafood Italian, not a quiet, slow, intimate meal. If you want a calmer experience, go earlier or on a less busy time. Value-wise, you’re paying a Little Italy premium, but the food quality holds up better than many tourist-area spots. The best move is to lean into what they’re known for: baked clams, clam sauces, seafood pasta, and classic Italian-American comfort dishes. Bottom line: a true NYC classic that still earns its reputation. Come hungry, order the baked clams, get a clam-sauce pasta, and enjoy the busy Little Italy atmosphere for what it is.

Had the lobster bisque and I never in my life had such a rich flavor. First time I had them was for the San Genaro festival and it was for the clams. My boyfriend went back everyday the festival was going for the clams. And was disappointed every time after that because he could not find some clams like these.

Best lobster ravioli I’ve ever had, and not to mention how great the baked clams were. The waitstaff was amazing and the atmosphere was great, we will back every time we visit the city from here on out!

Umberto’s gets a lot of good reviews and the reviews live up to the hype. Very cozy and old school atmosphere. Our waiter gave us great attentive service and can give recommendations off the menu and wine list. Portions are big, pasta is cooked well, and the seafood is fresh (especially the oysters and clams).

There are so many great things to say about Umberto'! I had made a reservation online, and I underestimated my public transportation commute from mid Jersey to NYC. I was a little late for my reservation, and they graciously took me right away. The service was wonderful, clean tables, constantly filled water and wine glasses, and THE FOOD!!! Oh my, was seriously beyond delicious. They have a homemade balsamic vinaigrette that is the perfect amount of flavor, not bitter. Their red sauce for the linguine with clams was the best I ever had, and as an Italian girl, I have had my fair share. From appetizer to coffee, it was unmatched. By far my favorite!

Very intimate and genuine vibes for a date night with your lover or loved one. Michele(sp) and Salvatore go over and beyond to not only make you feel like family but to ensure you leave full and happy! You simply MUST try their lobster fra diavolo. It’s absolute perfection and their seafood is served 100% fresh EVERY TIME! They have an all night happy hour menu for $10 and dinner specials as well! Tell them Ally sent you!

Back in NYC for the week, and Umbertos Clam House didn't disappoint. Food was very good, as usual. Seafood was fresh, and the wait staff was wonderful. Lived here for 18 years, and moved to Michigan, but when we come back to Mulberry Street, Umbertos is usually our first stop. Dine inside or outside. Either way is great.

While on my whirlwind sightseeing visit to NY to see my daughter and her boyfriend, I told them I wanted to visit an authentic Italian old mob restaurant, and Umberto's happened to be nearby. The service was excellent! The food was outstanding! The waiter entertained us with stories of old monsters that used to come to the restaurant. It was a charming visit.

We were hungry and tired and we were visiting Little Italy in New York. we were having issues deciding where to eat because there were so many restaurants. But we found a nice gentleman that offered us to choose Umberto’s Clam House. He was also very gentle and took a picture of us. We had the spaghetti with meatballs which was very good and a Margarita pizza. The staff were very friendly, nice and knowledgeable as well. We had a really good dining experience and will return for sure.

Whenever we go to Little Italy in New York, we always have a problem deciding where to eat because there are so many restaurants. The last time we chose Umberto’s Clam House. The linguini with clam sauce was very good and the portion served was huge. My wife had the pizza which was also great. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable as well. We had a really good dining experience and will return.

Loved everything about Umbertos! Manny, our waiter, was super helpful in our choices and just a delight to talk to. We started with the Fried Calamari, very tender and yummy and the garlic bread was hot with a nice crunchy crust. Our entrées were Linguini with Clam Sauce and Bolegnese over Linguini. Both were AMAZING!!! We sat outside and had a wonderful meal.

I went to Umberto's Clam House on the day after Valentine's Day. The restaurant still had the special menu both food and drinks. It wasn't busy at all maybe because of rain at that day. The reason why I picked this place is because it became infamous for its connection to the mafia "Crazy Joe" Gallo. I wasn't hungry so all food I ordered were light but can filled me up. I had Oysters, raw clams, Lobster Bisque and fish salad. I enjoy a Valentine Prosecco, Moscato and good-sweet Tiramisu. Raw bars were fresh, and the soup was delicious! Jess was our server, and she is very friendly and nice. We paid by cash to avoid and additional 3% if we use a credit card. There are many Italian neighborhoods in NYC and little Italy is one of my favorite areas to go especially during feast time.

I researched online and found this place as a to-go spot in Little Italy. Made a reservation online the day before for New Year's Eve. The place was empty at 6, we where there with just another table. We ordered bruschetta, which was sub par to say the least, with a very big piece of hard bread and not a lot of toppings (so for 16$, not worth it). The lobster ravioli was amazing, though, really flavorful. My husband had the meatball linguine, a good portion, but a little bit on the sweeter side. The servers were nice and for that I'll give them 4 stars, but I hated the fact that they add auto-gratuity of 20% and then ask for another tip of 3/5/7% on top of tax (which we learned earlier in the trip) and on top of an about 3$ card tax. So for a bill of 101$, we ended up paying 134$. This should be in the menu.

Little Italy is a foodie’s delight. We definitely wanted to try something Italian and decided to go to this place because honestly the guy outside the restaurant who was wooing people to come in and try their menu. He was very convincing. Ordered for Lasagna and Eggplant Parmigiana. Both were good and flavourful. The staff is pleasant. We had a nice experience. Ofcourse it’s pricey due to their mandatory gratuity tax.

Umberto’s was once a highly reputable establishment for a good evening. We had a good lunch. BYOB was permitted for a $20 cork fee. Service fell short of expectations. Dining area felt a bit crammed and unorganized. The glory days of Umberto’s is a bygone era just like the Wiseguys that use to frequent it.

Had the lunch specials, eggplant parmigiana with linguine and Caesar salad with grilled chicken. Both were under whelming for $16.95. Though the eggplant parmigiana was fine, the tomato sauce on the linguine was watery, bland and tasteless. It may have been the leftovers from the previous day and diluted till there wasn't enough flavor to salt. The caesar salad was in a mid sized bowl and had the equivalent of... About a quarter of a head of romaine lettuce and half a bowl of croutons. The filled chicken cutlet was approximately 3 ounces in size, if that, and if I had to make a comparison... a Cobb salad from Wendy's was superior in every way, including taste, portion size and price. Coffee was not refillable. One item that was good, was on the regular menu, the grilled octopus. Though this place specializes in seafood, I wouldn't return for their regular dinner menu, if the quality of their lunch specials are any indication of their dinners.

Poor service, mediocre food and horrible drinks. It took an hour for our food to come. The food was cold yet served on a hot plate. The drinks were absolutely gross, I had to send mine back. They remade it and it was still bad. Our drinks were served in plastic cups and we were told it was because they were busy. Others around us had glasses and this was the only restaurant on the street with no wait and we could be seated immediately. It was empty when we arrived whereas the others on the street had 45+ minute wait times. We should’ve seen that as a sign.

Food is so so gnocchi is very oily. Appetizers are ok we had the bruschetta and the oysters. The service is poor waiter points out no refills in a way that’s weird. Doesn’t do recommendations like who doesn’t recommend. This place has a rich history but falls flat decor is horrible. Bathrooms NOT wheelchair accessible.
