This place took me back in time, and I could feel the old NY energy inside me. It's one of the coolest breakfast spots around. I'll suggest that everyone frequent these places and keep them alive. Big up for the friendly staff!! Hot chocolate is a must here!

This is the spot!!! This is the spot myself, Choirand church peeps hang out at after service. Parking is not always easy, especially in the West Village, and when worship is in service but it can be found sometimes near the restaurant. The waiters are all wonderful and know our little group well. The restaurant is kid friendly, but usually, the kids seen here are the NYU students. The atmosphere is very comfortable, booths filled with chatting and laughter. There is so much to choose from the menu, and yes, there are vegan/vegetarian meals to choose from as well. The last time I ate there(2 wks ago) I had the chili with cheese over rice. The chili was well seasoned and tasty over the rice, perfect. Another spot with good food that's reasonable.

Great food grest atmosphere, waiter is there right away when your coffee is running low and it's a great place to sit and people watch, where it seems the majority of the guests are regulars who are on first name basis with the owners and the staff.

Classic diner in exceptional location. I had the Friday lunch special, a grilled chicken panini on focaccia bread, and it was very good. Surprisingly not crowded for a Friday afternoon, quick and efficient service, didn't feel rushed to leave the table after eating.

Stop in for a milkshake and a break from walking. Staff were so friendly and fast. I ended up grabbing a piece of cheesecake Togo and I'm so glad I did because it was some of the best I've ever had. Do the right thing and grab a slice.

Quick, clean, kind! I loved how welcoming the staff was . My ph was dead so I couldn't take photos . Fresh matzah ball soup was the most amazing soup. They make a variety of homemade soups it was perfect to warm me up.

Its pricey but portions are huge. The two of us tried to share one triple decker, one cup soup of the day (matzo) and a side of onion rings... ended up taking the onion rings home. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming and everyone working there is amazing. We also tried their iced coffee which was great. Tried to leave a good tip. Hopefully it was enough! Will try to return next time im in nyc

I ate here with my elderly mother. It was perfect. I told the owner that I was so happy with my meal I was ready to move to the city, and I meant it. Everything a diner should be.

K

It's a classic and standard diner that is dedicated to the basics in an impeccably right way. I'm saying, by no means, that "basics" are easily achievable. Indeed, the foods at this place are served in proper style with a good portion and on time. All the servers here are more than experienced and literally know what they are doing.

I

We stopped by on our 4th day out of 8 in NYC. Homesick, tired, hungry, we decided to visit Washington Square Park on a last minute whim. We were walking by this diner and it looked like home! We weren’t wrong. This little diner gave us the homestyle food we were craving, waiters who looked familiar, and cured our homesick woes. The service was impeccable! Our waiter asked us if we wanted dessert, but I told him I was waiting for my sister, because she wanted chocolate cake but was busy washing her hands. They had two choices! When she came back to our table, he asked her which chocolate cake she wanted…! When I think of our NYC trip, I thank this little diner for allowing us to make it through the rest of our trip! 🥰

S

Amazing food for an amazing price! <$20 each despite huge portions. I ordered a deluxe patty melt and it was probably one of the best meals I've had so far in 2023. The waiters were attentive and my fries were crispy despite being thick-cut. My friend got an omelette that she loved. We went at 10 pm and it was busy but the service wasn't slow. Perfect for 2 starving college students after a full day of studying.

Servers are kind, sweet and great!! It made the experience even better. The food was good, no one pushing you to finish up your food and leave, yet kept a check on customers that they were enjoying their time. Nice to see a diner in this part of the area. Will go again!

Quaint. Small. Packed. Open on Christmas morning. The epitome of a perfect NY Diner! Christmas Eve 2024, I wake up at 5 AM in Kansas City only to realize, I'm spending Christmas alone. Bummer. I make coffee, turn on the fire, sit in my chair, and I realize... alone is not fun. I buy a ticket, pack a duffle bag, and head to the airport. 30 hours in NYC... no more perfect of a way to spend the holiday. As I sit at my gate, my partner texts, "my flight is canceled, come pick me up". My response: "Meet me at gate B36". Christmas together! After a fun Christmas Eve evening, we woke up needing a good brunch and Washington Square Diner did just that. In pure NY style, they sat us quickly at the bar, coffee and water are there instantly. We order. Food is there in moments. Hot, fresh, delicious! Everything was perfectly flavorful. The bustling diner around us just made the morning even more magical! There is nothing but wonderful I can say aout WSD. Lovely little diner that I hope stays alive and thriving for many years to come! Thanks for making Christmas 2024 magical!

We absolutely love going to Washington Square Diner! Its a small and quiet place. Haven't gotten try to much of their food except for the pancakes and bacon cause that's my weakness. My teens loves their french toast! We are going to NYC for the 4th time but for Christmas and we're definitely stopping by for dinner

I like when diners do something unique. Their paninis are good but they could season the eggplant that goes into it better.

Located just a few blocks from Washington Square Park, Washington Square Diner is a no-frills, old-school spot that delivers exactly what you'd expect from a classic New York diner and that's a big part of its charm. The menu is extensive, offering everything from pancakes and omelets to burgers, sandwiches, and full dinner entrees. The food is straightforward, nothing fancy, but consistently solid. The pancakes are fluffy, the eggs are cooked right, and the coffee is always refilled without asking. Service is fast, friendly, and efficient, with waitstaff who seem to have worked there forever and know how to keep things moving without rushing you out. Prices are reasonable by Manhattan standards, making it a great value for the neighborhood.

Jia
Jia

The food was nothing special, but the atmosphere and service were excellent. Prices for cash and card payments were clearly listed on the menu. The tipping options 15%, 18%, and 20% were refreshingly modest by New York standards, a rare bargain in the city’s usual tipping culture now.

Washington Square Diner is the bomb! It's our go-to breakfast spot. It's an old-fashioned greasy spoon type of place that has been around forever. The service is amazing. The food is great, and the atmosphere, well , just say that it hasn't changed much in the last 20 years or so. But that is what gives it that traditional NYC vibe. If you are in the village, you gotta try it out! By the way, the carrot 🥕 cake 🎂 is amazing...

Priyanka Formentin

By far, one of the best diners in NYC!! Diners are not a place to order pasta and expect it to be good but I think this place is an exception. I ordered penne alla vodka and it was on par with a good Italian restaurant. Unbelievable! I married into an Italian family so I know my pastas. They are a bit pricey but for the amount of food you get, it's justified! We got the leftovers to go. Definitely going to come back here again to try other items on the menu. Also, one of fastest service that I have seen! A big thumbs up to them!!

This is a classic American restaurant. I liked it very much. It was cheap, burgers were huge and pretty good. They have a large menu with a lot of options for a reasonable price. The staff were really nice. If you’re looking for a healthy meal or a fancier place you might want to stop at somewhere else. But if your ok with some sandwich, burger, or else you’re going to enjoy this place. I had dinner but I believe it’s much better to have breakfast/brunch.

An old school dinner serving up amazing breakfast and a nice brunch deal. Whenever I’m craving some park cakes, this is my go to spot in the city. It’s near my place and I can always find a seat. Service can be a little busy on weekends but worth the wait. They have the best bacon and eggs and make a pretty good omelet too. The portions are massive.

We were there yesterday with the kids. The food was really good (crispy chicken sandwiches, chocolate chip pancakes, and jalapeño cheddar grilled cheese), and the waiters were nice and attentive. And everything was very clean...except the men's room, which was a total stinking wreck, said Mr. Hawke. I'd give it 4-1/2 stars if I could.

A nice modern touch to an old American style diner. The staff is great! They have really good lunch specials. Wine and beer are served too. Reasonable pricing for the food. Service is fast and ambience is great! Just outside the Subway station so you don't have to walk much if you're hungry.

Classic diner vibes in the west village - old style booths, an enormous menu that has everything, and friendly but efficient service. I had a western omelette along with a side of toast and coffee. Tasted great and good value, it hit the spot.

Met my expectations for a diner, atmosphere was easy and simple. Walked in to sit at the bar and got service right away. Ordered French toast w/ham and eggs. The kitchen was simple and they had a vast menu...lots of options if you aren't sure what to get. I was looking for breakfast and got what I needed. Ended up taking home 2 slices of french toast and turned out great the next morning for round two. The restroom was a bit odd as there was water on the floor...too much to just be from people's hands and the dryer was behind the toilet on the wall. Very inconvenient for someone who doesn't have much reach. Guess you could say authentic diner experience? lol

l

Great service! Cute classic place with yummy food. Minus one star because the hamburger was like $12 on the menu and it cost $14.95. No qualms otherwise.

C

Exactly what you would expect a diner to be - the menu offers plenty of options for breakfast, lunch, or even dinner. The wait staff was friendly and prompt to refill water and coffee - this place gives any patron the feeling of being a regular shortly after entering. Food takes barely 5 minutes to be out from when it's ordered.

It’s always been there, tucked right by the square, but this was my first time finally stepping in for dinner, and I am glad I did. The space has that timeless charm, cozy and inviting. Portions are generous, especially for the price. The onion soup was hearty and flavorful, and the omelette is great, Even the salad came in a big, satisfying bowl, but the chicken kebab is average. This place knows what it’s doing. The service was kind and attentive, and everything felt smooth and professional. A true neighborhood classic with good food.

I just needed a good, standard breakfast and a bathroom—and I got both here. It has that classic diner feel, one of those places with a staff that have been there awhile. I kept it simple—eggs, bacon, potatoes, and toast. The prices were reasonable, the service was quick, and the home fries had that homemade quality to them.

Cozy and reasonable place to get a lunch or dinner. The quality is ok. But the price is reasonable for a place to hang out. I like it because no need to be fancy. It s a typical new yorker diner

Massive portions which is good if you only care about that but the food isnt very tasty. The pies are pretty bad so dont get those. The service is very nice and fast.

Decent diner. Great diner vibes and feel. But the wings I had were only ok. Have to admit I had a slightly frustrating experience - possibly a misunderstanding on my part. I always thought buffalo wings come in buffalo sauce (otherwise they’re chicken wings, right?). Well I ordered the buffalo wings which come with blue cheese dressing on the side but got regular chicken wings with the blue cheese dressing instead. When I asked about the buffalo sauce I got a confused look, and told that the wings come with blue cheese dressing 🤷. Thankfully they were able to bring me some buffalo sauce on the side which I added to my wings.

A typical divey New York diner. I got the Reuben, which was ok, but nothing special. Wait staff was very attentive, but spoke very fast and sometimes hard to understand.

Tried the Chocolate Egg Cream. Definitely not a drink for everyone. You should try it, Chocolate syrup, seltzer water and milk! 1st time having Matzah soup, not a fan! Very flat, one note. Hot turkey sandwich was okay. Not sure about the color of the gravy but once I added salt and pepper was palatable.

I love a good greasy-spoon diner, and generally, the lower-frills, the better. I liked the vibe here and was excited for what I felt should be a great classic diner experience. But it was deeply disappointing. Ordered the western omelette with home fries and toast. Everything came out cold and dry. Omelette was room temp and somehow also overcooked. Potatoes were likewise cold and dry. Toast came dry and room temp (refrigerated/chilled butter on the side). Aside from the miserable food, the service and coffee were both decent, otherwise I'd be giving a single star.

Better cafes in the area. From the basic white bread that’s barely toasted, to the smuckers syrup packets, this place screams “highschool cafeteria” food. And not in a nice nostalgic way, rather like “wow this is overpriced food”.

Not impressed with the service or atmosphere. You can feel the vibe change from the staff when a person of color walks in. Also, they expect a tip.

One of the weakest diner experiences I've had, ever. The prices here are borderline insulting - $16 for a grilled chicken sandwich with literally nothing on it. NOTHING (that tomato in the pic is from my friend's sandwich that he kindly donated). The chicken was dry as a bone, almost impossible to swallow. It also wasn't seasoned. Slathering it in honey mustard wasn't enough to revive the poor bird. Shameful, shameful, shameful!!!

For a $20 serving I've received a cold tortilla with a lot of salad inside and not much meat. The sauce was all over the place making my cold tortilla nightmare to handle. Left there hungry with no intentions of ever coming back. Also no WiFi in 2025.!?

The waiters were accommodating. Changed a water glass with lipstick on it. Homeless folks were in and out to use the bathroom and change out money. The food was not appetizing, but it was clean and ok to talk there. I will never return or recommend. (I gave the 2 stars because the place was clean, water glasses and tea were refilled. Also, it is kind to assist the homeless population)

I’m honestly very upset with my experience at Washington Square Diner. I came here with a friend and we ordered two meals and two drinks. After a few minutes, my friend had to leave for another commitment, so I continued eating alone. In the middle of my meal (literally while I was putting food in my mouth) the server suddenly asked if I was done. He even grabbed my plate, and I had to pull it back because I was clearly still eating. If you’re going to interrupt me and tell me to move, at the very least wait until I finish my meal. Instead, he said, “Do you need more time? Move to another table.” I was shocked and uncomfortable, but I agreed and moved. He relocated all my food and drinks, and then added, “People keep complaining because you are using a big table.” For reference, this was the shorter male server working at the time. I was the woman wearing a black turtleneck and black coat. Not that it matters anymore because I will NEVER come back. This made absolutely no sense. I originally came with another person, so of course we were seated at a table for two. At the beginning, I even asked to sit by the window, and the server told me I had to order food if I wanted that table — which I did. So to be suddenly forced to move in the middle of eating was incredibly rude and disrespectful. The constant pressure and unfriendly attitude completely ruined my experience. The staff seemed irritated and unwelcoming, and I hate being rushed while eating For me, being forced to move in the middle of eating was humiliating, disruptive, and completely unacceptable. I lost my appetite immediately. No customer should ever feel rushed, pressured, or disrespected like this. It doesn’t matter if the food is decent. Service like this completely ruins the experience. If you value basic respect, comfort, and being treated like a human being instead of a problem, avoid this place. There are countless diners in NYC with staff who actually understand hospitality. I will gladly take my business elsewhere especially to another diners where the staff are welcoming, professional, and know how to treat customers properly.

I ate at Waverly Diner today with my friend, excited to finally try their food after walking by them all the time the last few years but never going inside. I ordered the French Onion Grilled Cheese and a Cup of Chili with Cheddar and Onions. My friend ordered the Chicken Parm Sandwich. She thought it was okay. Unfortunately for me, I had to take a very strange journey, which seemed increasingly hostile with every issue I encountered. To start, I received my cup of chili, but accompanied with a bowl of french onion soup. It took a long time for me to get the attention of the waiter. When I was finally able to let him know I ordered a grilled cheese (which I thought he would remember, since he asked me what kind of bread I would want), he did take back the soup and said he would put in the french onion grilled cheese. The grilled cheese did not take long to come out… and this was reflected in the raw onions present in my sandwhich, which also looked thrown onto the plate. It also came with a comically small pickle. I was not able to get the attention of any waiter until I finished my bowl of chili. I had to speak to multiple people and asked them if I could send it back because the onions were raw. They did not appreciate me asking to send it back. They told me these are actually grilled onions. Over and Over. This went back and forth for a bit until I was able to request a bowl of chili instead. The bowl of chili arrived and felt like an even more hostile slap in the face. The food and service were not really that great. I would not recommend coming here unless you are willing to risk a similar experience. They also did nothing to compensate these struggles. Why am I spending $22 for some damn chili what the hell.

We walked in with our (very small) service dog, and the waiter basically yelled at us, refusing to serve us. When I told him that refusing a service dog was illegal, he simply replied "I know". Get as far away from this place as you can

Stay away from this place. Like really. If you can’t even make a blueberry pie right what what can you do right ? The worst blueberry pie I have ever had. The worst blueberry pie I have ever had. Should I repeat it? Disgusting is the word. Right in the middle of such a beautiful historic neighborhood. What a shame.

I should’ve walked out after seeing the monstrosity of a menu this place has. It’s not really their fault if they can’t keep up with all the items, but this? Come on. Eating this felt like a punishment. If you were to come here, never order any of the salads at least.

Look, I looked like a nice restaurant online but when my fiancé and I went inside, we were denied service because of my service dog. He is the cutest quietest most pleasure to have around a little puppy, and all we want to do is have a meal. If they are against service animals, I am against giving them my money.

Looks like a really good place online. Went there with my fiancé and my little puppy who is a service dog. We were denied menus and told to leave because of our little 5 pound dog. This place discriminates against service animals, which is a discrimination against humanity

We came here for brunch to celebrate my wife’s birthday, and the experience was unacceptable. There was no greeting or sense of hospitality—only a directive to sit down. The food was undercooked, and at no point did anyone check on us or ask if we needed anything. The server handed the food over my wife’s head instead of properly walking around the table and presenting it. The service was unprofessional, the food quality was poor, and this was a very disappointing experience overall.
