Washington Square Dinner Albee Square Reviews
Quaint. Small. Packed. Open on Christmas morning. The epitome of a perfect NY Diner! Christmas Eve 2024, I wake up at 5 AM in Kansas City only to realize, I'm spending Christmas alone. Bummer. I make coffee, turn on the fire, sit in my chair, and I realize... alone is not fun. I buy a ticket, pack a duffle bag, and head to the airport. 30 hours in NYC... no more perfect of a way to spend the holiday. As I sit at my gate, my partner texts, "my flight is canceled, come pick me up". My response: "Meet me at gate B36". Christmas together! After a fun Christmas Eve evening, we woke up needing a good brunch and Washington Square Diner did just that. In pure NY style, they sat us quickly at the bar, coffee and water are there instantly. We order. Food is there in moments. Hot, fresh, delicious! Everything was perfectly flavorful. The bustling diner around us just made the morning even more magical! There is nothing but wonderful I can say aout WSD. Lovely little diner that I hope stays alive and thriving for many years to come! Thanks for making Christmas 2024 magical!
We absolutely love going to Washington Square Diner! Its a small and quiet place. Haven't gotten try to much of their food except for the pancakes and bacon cause that's my weakness. My teens loves their french toast! We are going to NYC for the 4th time but for Christmas and we're definitely stopping by for dinner
Located just a few blocks from Washington Square Park, Washington Square Diner is a no-frills, old-school spot that delivers exactly what you'd expect from a classic New York diner and that's a big part of its charm. The menu is extensive, offering everything from pancakes and omelets to burgers, sandwiches, and full dinner entrees. The food is straightforward, nothing fancy, but consistently solid. The pancakes are fluffy, the eggs are cooked right, and the coffee is always refilled without asking. Service is fast, friendly, and efficient, with waitstaff who seem to have worked there forever and know how to keep things moving without rushing you out. Prices are reasonable by Manhattan standards, making it a great value for the neighborhood.
Washington Square Diner is the bomb! It's our go-to breakfast spot. It's an old-fashioned greasy spoon type of place that has been around forever. The service is amazing. The food is great, and the atmosphere, well , just say that it hasn't changed much in the last 20 years or so. But that is what gives it that traditional NYC vibe. If you are in the village, you gotta try it out! By the way, the carrot 🥕 cake 🎂 is amazing...
By far, one of the best diners in NYC!! Diners are not a place to order pasta and expect it to be good but I think this place is an exception. I ordered penne alla vodka and it was on par with a good Italian restaurant. Unbelievable! I married into an Italian family so I know my pastas. They are a bit pricey but for the amount of food you get, it's justified! We got the leftovers to go. Definitely going to come back here again to try other items on the menu. Also, one of fastest service that I have seen! A big thumbs up to them!!
This is a classic American restaurant. I liked it very much. It was cheap, burgers were huge and pretty good. They have a large menu with a lot of options for a reasonable price. The staff were really nice. If you’re looking for a healthy meal or a fancier place you might want to stop at somewhere else. But if your ok with some sandwich, burger, or else you’re going to enjoy this place. I had dinner but I believe it’s much better to have breakfast/brunch.
An old school dinner serving up amazing breakfast and a nice brunch deal. Whenever I’m craving some park cakes, this is my go to spot in the city. It’s near my place and I can always find a seat. Service can be a little busy on weekends but worth the wait. They have the best bacon and eggs and make a pretty good omelet too. The portions are massive.

Great little diner here! We enjoyed two meals here in three days. The only negative could be that there is SO MUCH food in a serving! Everything is served on a platter. Excellent value here!

I’ve not been here in a long time, had a craving for scrambled eggs and corned beef hash. Met with a friend who ordered a turkey burger, so we can catch up!

Great diner, super friendly staff and a huge menu. I love the no nonsense atmosphere, clean, efficient and orderly. Give this place a try for a great and affordable meal.
Great classic new york diner. Big portions, well made, coffee, diner pie, all locals and uni students from the village and nyu. Come here and you will get exactly as you expected.
It’s always been there, tucked right by the square, but this was my first time finally stepping in for dinner, and I am glad I did. The space has that timeless charm, cozy and inviting. Portions are generous, especially for the price. The onion soup was hearty and flavorful, and the omelette is great, Even the salad came in a big, satisfying bowl, but the chicken kebab is average. This place knows what it’s doing. The service was kind and attentive, and everything felt smooth and professional. A true neighborhood classic with good food.
I just needed a good, standard breakfast and a bathroom—and I got both here. It has that classic diner feel, one of those places with a staff that have been there awhile. I kept it simple—eggs, bacon, potatoes, and toast. The prices were reasonable, the service was quick, and the home fries had that homemade quality to them.
Service was quick. food good. They were attentative. They support police. Considering it was Holloween they were packed.

Tried the Chocolate Egg Cream. Definitely not a drink for everyone. You should try it, Chocolate syrup, seltzer water and milk! 1st time having Matzah soup, not a fan! Very flat, one note. Hot turkey sandwich was okay. Not sure about the color of the gravy but once I added salt and pepper was palatable.

I’m honestly very upset with my experience at Washington Square Diner. I came here with a friend and we ordered two meals and two drinks. After a few minutes, my friend had to leave for another commitment, so I continued eating alone. In the middle of my meal (literally while I was putting food in my mouth) the server suddenly asked if I was done. He even grabbed my plate, and I had to pull it back because I was clearly still eating. If you’re going to interrupt me and tell me to move, at the very least wait until I finish my meal. Instead, he said, “Do you need more time? Move to another table.” I was shocked and uncomfortable, but I agreed and moved. He relocated all my food and drinks, and then added, “People keep complaining because you are using a big table.” For reference, this was the shorter male server working at the time. I was the woman wearing a black turtleneck and black coat. Not that it matters anymore because I will NEVER come back. This made absolutely no sense. I originally came with another person, so of course we were seated at a table for two. At the beginning, I even asked to sit by the window, and the server told me I had to order food if I wanted that table — which I did. So to be suddenly forced to move in the middle of eating was incredibly rude and disrespectful. The constant pressure and unfriendly attitude completely ruined my experience. The staff seemed irritated and unwelcoming, and I hate being rushed while eating For me, being forced to move in the middle of eating was humiliating, disruptive, and completely unacceptable. I lost my appetite immediately. No customer should ever feel rushed, pressured, or disrespected like this. It doesn’t matter if the food is decent. Service like this completely ruins the experience. If you value basic respect, comfort, and being treated like a human being instead of a problem, avoid this place. There are countless diners in NYC with staff who actually understand hospitality. I will gladly take my business elsewhere especially to another diners where the staff are welcoming, professional, and know how to treat customers properly.
I ate at Waverly Diner today with my friend, excited to finally try their food after walking by them all the time the last few years but never going inside. I ordered the French Onion Grilled Cheese and a Cup of Chili with Cheddar and Onions. My friend ordered the Chicken Parm Sandwich. She thought it was okay. Unfortunately for me, I had to take a very strange journey, which seemed increasingly hostile with every issue I encountered. To start, I received my cup of chili, but accompanied with a bowl of french onion soup. It took a long time for me to get the attention of the waiter. When I was finally able to let him know I ordered a grilled cheese (which I thought he would remember, since he asked me what kind of bread I would want), he did take back the soup and said he would put in the french onion grilled cheese. The grilled cheese did not take long to come out… and this was reflected in the raw onions present in my sandwhich, which also looked thrown onto the plate. It also came with a comically small pickle. I was not able to get the attention of any waiter until I finished my bowl of chili. I had to speak to multiple people and asked them if I could send it back because the onions were raw. They did not appreciate me asking to send it back. They told me these are actually grilled onions. Over and Over. This went back and forth for a bit until I was able to request a bowl of chili instead. The bowl of chili arrived and felt like an even more hostile slap in the face. The food and service were not really that great. I would not recommend coming here unless you are willing to risk a similar experience. They also did nothing to compensate these struggles. Why am I spending $22 for some damn chili what the hell.
Our patience with this diner has been going down. The service is extremely rude. Yes, it gets busy there. But the staff is dismissive and they push you out rudely during peak times. . Any concern…

I just picked up my order of cheeseburger Deluxe. The lettuce is rotten and I have to finish cooking the fries
We came here for brunch to celebrate my wife’s birthday, and the experience was unacceptable. There was no greeting or sense of hospitality—only a directive to sit down. The food was undercooked, and at no point did anyone check on us or ask if we needed anything. The server handed the food over my wife’s head instead of properly walking around the table and presenting it. The service was unprofessional, the food quality was poor, and this was a very disappointing experience overall.
