Emmer & Rye Austin Reviews
Love this spot. Emmer & Rye is that place where you feel cool just sitting down. We started with the sourdough and I’m not being dramatic when I say it’s a whole event. They bring it out like it’s the main character. Two different butters and this strawberry situation for dipping that had me questioning every plain bread basket I’ve ever accepted in my life. Unreal. I got the oysters and they were super fresh and clean, but I’m not gonna lie, I needed about six more. That’s on me though. For mains we had the Texas Akaushi Wagyu and these raviolis with an egg in the middle. Both were insane. The wagyu was rich but not heavy, cooked perfectly, melt in your mouth vibes. The ravioli was one of those dishes where you cut into it and just sit there for a second. The egg yolk mixed into everything and it was game over. They even brought out this vegetable broth made from scraps because they’re big on no waste. Somehow a broth from scraps tasted better than most soups I’ve had. Respect. We didn’t order drinks, but everything coming out around us looked elite. 10 out of 10. I’d go back in a heartbeat
I stumbled in here by happen chance on a work trip and got a spot at the bar. They have their signature menu items that are talked about but I broke away from those (and I’m so glad I did). I ordered 3 of the Johnny cakes to start and they were heaven in a bite. I wish I ordered 25 more. I also ordered the short rib pappardelle for my main entree and it was also so delicious. If I land back in Austin I will gladly come back. Until then, I’ll be dreaming of Johnny Cakes.
This was my second time to Emmer & Rye. The service was excellent and we really enjoyed the food. The carpaccio was a stand out. My only complaint was the temperature in the restaurant was slightly chilly. All else was top notch.
By far my favorite restaurant in austin and id say would fall into my top 10 restaurants! Have been here 3 times already. Reservation is highly recommended. Chef’s counter is a great spot to sit at especially for a solo diner. Everyone is very friendly as well! Id say my only slight complaint was that the Cacio e Pepe had a bit too much black peper.
We had my husband's 40th birthday dinner at Emmer & Rye and they went above and beyond to make him happy. They called ahead of time to ask what he liked so they could make a special drink for him! And what must be the entire staff signed a birthday card for him. They gave us a free dessert too. Everything tasted exceptional, particularly the Texas wagyu beef with tallow potatoes. My husband said a restaurant had never made him feel so special in his life. Worth every penny.
My wife and I chose Emmer & Rye for dinner to celebrate our anniversary, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The staff were absolutely amazing. From the moment we we walked in we felt celebrated. They had a handwritten card waiting for us at the table, signed by the team, which was a thoughtful touch. Service throughout the night was seamless and attentive. Everyone knew the menu and our waiter offered thoughtful recommendations that elevated the entire meal. My wife eats plant-based, and the team went above and beyond to accommodate her. They guided her to vegan friendly dishes and offered vegan versions of certain items without hesitation. The food itself was transcendent. The crudo and the mole were outstanding, with incredible layers and depth of flavor. each bite kept you engaged and curious about what came next. The sweet potato tamale was phenomenal, and the lamb & pork carnitas were absolutely outstanding. Emmer & Rye delivered not just an incredible meal, but a meaningful, memorable dining experience. We couldn’t have picked a better place to celebrate. Thank you!
If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience and meal, you mustn’t miss this place. After being greeted by the warm host, I enjoyed a late solo dinner at the chef’s bar. I ordered the beef carpaccio and cacio e pepe pasta, which were both incredible and unexpected in their own ways. The carpaccio was high-quality beef, the perfect balance of textures and flavors, while the pasta was light, flavorful, and divine. The cream sauce was just the right amount, and the pepper was pungent & complemented the flavors perfectly. Notably, Max, the chef behind the bar, was so warm, kind, and made my experience so enjoyable. His recommendations and service were a highlight. My server Ana was absolutely wonderful as well and my experience would not have been the same without the two of them. Don’t hesitate to make reservations here– you will not regret it.
We had an amazing experience for our anniversary last night! Ellie was incredibly knowledgeable and fun and her team mate (I’m so sorry to not remember her name!) , was phenomenal at wine selection and helped us find our new favorite bottle! We enjoyed the Johnny cakes, the Berkshire pork, and the gulf fish, finished with the PB&J. Every dish’s was so thought out and bursting with flavor! You can literally taste each ingredient harmoniously, there was no blending of tastes where ingredients got lost! This is THE place to be!! Everyone was so incredibly nice and we cannot wait to come back on our next trip to Austin! Thank you again Ellie and team!! Y’all made our evening unforgettable!
Amazing service- fantastic food - beautiful atmosphere. Not sure what more you could ask for. Must get items include the crudo, the bread, the cacio pepi, and sorbet is surprisingly refreshing. It is especially great if you are celebrating an anniversary or birthday. Tori, their curator of good vibes, called a week ahead of time to learn more about us and make the experience incredibly special. What a memorable visit. Thank you!
Went to Emmer & Rye on a recommendation from a buddy for a nice "date night" out with the wife. The staff was nice and the atmosphere was vibes. We sat at the bar and service was just as good as a table, if not better. Amazing craft cocktails and delicious shareable plates. We had the cacio e pepe and wagyu and the sorbet for dessert. Holy cow the sorbet! Like eating an apple pie that melts in your mouth. Michelin stars are well deserved.
Entry: paid valet parking 1st - the bread is an absolute cannot miss. Incredible. I would hold off on the extra ham and cheese it was a bit unnecessary. 2nd - pasta’s - the highlight of the meal all were fresh and made in house. Highly recommend 3rd - mains - the chicken was good, not great, but a very good texas style smoked chicken. Loved this spot, definitely will come back for the bread and pasta. Perfect for a date night!
Emmer & Rye offers visitors a delicious lesson in Austin's culinary craft. The restaurant's reverence for heritage grains, milled in-house, is the soul of its menu. This fanatical approach results in pasta with a profound, nutty flavor and perfect texture that can redefine the dish. Throughout the menu, expert techniques like fermentation add a startling complexity to each thoughtful plate, showcasing a deep commitment to artisanship. This foundational craft is brilliantly complemented by the evening's main event: the roving dim sum-style cart. This unique service turns dinner into a dynamic experience, delivering a parade of spontaneous, off-menu small plates directly to your table. It’s the perfect way for visitors to sample the kitchen's full creativity, creating a sense of discovery that perfectly captures Austin's charm.
We had a terrific experience, so I'm a bit surprised by the critical reviews. First of all, the staff couldn't be more attentive. Second, the food was great and in no way overpriced. Our best meal and service combined in 3 days in Austin, which is no small distinction given other great places we ate at.
Dining at Emmer & Rye was an absolute treat from start to finish. Every single dish we tried was cooked to perfection—beautifully presented, thoughtfully balanced, and bursting with flavor. You can tell that the chefs put incredible care and creativity into every plate, highlighting fresh, seasonal ingredients in the best possible way. The service was warm, attentive, and knowledgeable, making the whole experience feel seamless and special. The atmosphere is modern yet inviting, perfect for a memorable night out. If you’re in Austin and looking for a place that combines innovative cuisine with flawless execution, Emmer & Rye is a must-visit. It’s the kind of restaurant that reminds you why dining out can be such a remarkable experience.
Emmer and Rye was fantastic. We were a group of 5 and got to try several dishes. Particular standouts include the bread, johnnycakes, eggplants (some of the best I’ve ever had!), cacio e Pepe, and grouper. Drinks were stellar - wine choices are great. We got the Matthiasson rose. Well priced at $70 a bottle.
Emmer & Rye is a lively and inventive spot on Rainey Street, perfect for an evening of sharing plates and trying new flavors. We sat at the counter, which gave a great view of the kitchen team at work. The menu is designed for sharing, with several small to medium plates that change seasonally. Each dish was beautifully presented and packed with flavor, and the pace of service was excellent , dishes arrived promptly but without feeling rushed. Staff were friendly, attentive, and happy to answer questions or recommend favorites. This is a very popular place, especially on weekends, so I’d recommend making a reservation in advance. The Rainey Street location adds to the atmosphere. Overall, Emmer & Rye delivers a memorable dining experience with great food, warm service, and a buzzing Austin vibe.
Exceeded my high expectations! All the food was outstanding, particularly the cabbage. I loved the waiters explanations of each dish - helps you to appreciate the ingredients and preparation that goes into each bite. There was a very mild wait for my first dish so they sent over Johnny cakes for free!

What a great spot! Got a late night reservation and it was so worth it. We got to try a bunch of small plates and the variety was great. The Emmer & Rye old fashion is the best one in Austin.
We went for our anniversary while in Austin and were very impressed with Emmer & Rye. Loved the food, service and decor. Perfect for a date night.
The food and service were hands down the best ever. I didn't feel rushed at all. The drinks were so good and the sourdough bread is a must!

I recommend going for any punchy starters or any of the hearty mains. For me that means the carpaccio with its use of nuoc cham for tanginess and meatiness was a great appetizer. The snapper with the Hakurei and the crumble had good texture and balance. The akaushi steak was seasoned very well and tender. The carnitas was a really good terrine used as a wrapped taco presentation that I liked. The snapper crudo was missing acid and thus quite boring. The pappardelle used a smoked meat which I get but felt somehow off, like too much smoke? Overall more hits than misses. The vibe of this place is so good especially when sitting outside. So I recommend going, sitting outside if possible, and getting anything that seems strong in flavor.

An excellent dinner but should be for the price. And it was. The drinks, food, and service were all top notch. Certainly skipped the appetizers at $20...Austin is expensive though.

my boyfriend and i came here for our one year anniversary because we love to try all the michelin rated restaurants for special occasions, and we felt very let down by our experience. they started off sitting us 15 minutes late for our reservation, and then brought us 2 dishes we did not order, one that wasn’t even mentioned during our talk with the waitress while figuring out what all to get, and then we ended up feeling so bad about it, even though it wasn’t any fault of our own, we told them they didn’t have to give us the last dish that we actually ordered, even though it’s the one we really wanted. Thankfully they comped the two incorrect pastas and gave us a free cacio e pepe card that we probably won’t be using unfortunately. The food however was pretty good, our favorite being the cacio e pepe and johnny cakes, i didn’t like the ravioli that we didn’t order, but ended up eating, at all; the crudo was good but i feel all crudo taste pretty much the same for us so it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. the rigatoni we didn’t order was good, just not what we wanted, i only ended up trying one piece of the pasta. overall the least desirable experience we’ve had at any of the michelin rated places, probably won’t come back because we left feeling so awkward and like they were annoyed with us even though we did nothing wrong.
The place did not particularly stand out. Many of the dishes I tried shared a similar flavor profile, primarily salt and pepper. However, the bread and butter were quite nice. We ordered a majority of the dishes recommended by other reviewers, and they were just average. The service, on the other hand, was commendable.
Long story short: not worth it for the cost. Crudo was tasty. Oysters had too much going on with them where you couldn’t even tell there was an oyster underneath. Mushroom pasta was delicious and creamy ! Texas Wagyu was good but… $70 for 6 medallions?! Not worth it. Overall food was pretty good but just not worth the prices. Ambiance and service was nothing above average either. Skip.

Insufferable. Everything about it was ridiculous. Not in a good way. Outside service staff vaping in the curb. Unnecessary table service- and her hair was down and she was in jeans. But our waitress wore a Carhart apron? Come on. And bread table service at a table where a patron has Celiac? Jeez. Up to the chef when plates come out? So the bread didn’t come out to soak up the carpaccio. How stupid. We had a reservation for 12 but they refused to put our tables in a line because otherwise they would charge us a set menu. So we had our backs to our friends. Then they put a gratuity on our table and not theirs. Then the bathrooms… podcasts in the toilets, communal sinks. All things dumb. I get it, you got a nod from Michelin, good for you. But I don’t remember ever getting such bad service. I am a chef educator and I would bring my students here to identify all the terrible service points of this place. The food was fine. Carpaccio was great, parpadelle was rolled unevenly. Chicken was moist but way too smoky to eat it all. One of the worst experiences I’ve had eating in Austin.
I rarely leave bad reviews, and I never expected to write one for a Michelin-starred restaurant, but this experience was shockingly poor. Within minutes of ordering, we were told the restaurant was out of fish. Fine. We reordered, only to be told they were also out of chicken. For a menu with just 4–5 main entrées, being out of two primary proteins is unacceptable, especially at this level. I don’t eat beef or pork, so I was effectively left with no real choice and forced to order cacio e pepe by default. I ordered a side of mushrooms to at least add a vegetable to the meal, only to be told they were out of mushrooms as well. The sourdough bread arrived 30–40 minutes after our drinks, wasn’t warm, and was entirely average at best, nothing close to what you’d expect from a restaurant of this reputation. Then came the sweet potato tamal, which was honestly below average. I appreciate creativity and new flavor combinations, but this simply didn’t work. It was so unpleasant that it’s the first time in a long while I’ve left food untouched on the plate. Running out of multiple core menu items, long delays, uninspired execution, and genuinely bad dishes made this the worst fine-dining experience I’ve had. It’s honestly hard to believe this restaurant holds a Michelin star. Deeply disappointing and not worth the hype.
