Foreign & Domestic Austin Reviews
This is a spot I lusted after for a very long time and never tried while living in Austin, so when the opportunity came to try during a recent visit I was so excited and F+D delivered the experience I was craving and then some:) Our server Kunika was so genuinely friendly and conversational, she gave us some great recommendations for wine to pair with the $1 East Coast oyster special (we went for a salt-forward white), and was so present and attentive! All other servers we interacted with were on the same wavelength, making for the most pleasant service experience! We paired the oysters with Crispy Fingerlings, Gruyere Popovers, Parisian Gnocchi, and Melted Leek Risotto. All of which were exactly what you’d expect, absolutely phenomenal. The popovers and fingerlings were yummy and complexly savory little accoutrements, while both the gnocchi and risotto were absolutely melt in your mouth umami takes on pasta dishes F+D is so worth the splurge, I can’t believe I waited so long to try!
Sit at the bar. We had an amazing experience at brunch today. I think our seating played a huge part of that. We went hungry. The menu is amazing and I really would have taken anything they offered, it was very hard to choose. We watched as the whole team worked in sync to make the magic happen. Every single plate looked delicious, I was going off that to land on what to eat. We started with the pop overs. Ours were huge and delicious. A visual treat that came through with savory flavor. Had the salad next and it was sublime. We had the frittata and the croque madame. Holy smokes, amazing. Just the treat you would want for a Sunday brunch. The gentleman next to us got the omlette and it looked like a gift from the heavens. I wish we had planned for more of the sweeter side of the menu. The pancakes look like gifts from the gods. It is in an old school Austin area, being from here, this speaks to me. I read a few other reviews and I would highly recommend sitting at the bar and watching the team that makes this one of Austin's best restaurants. I did not take photos, I was too busy eating : )
we had wonderful and warm service (a few items were given free d/t some longer wait times) that was greatly appreciated. and the food was DELICIOUS. the gnocchi were melt in your mouth creamy and the mains were all so flavorful. pecan pie >>>. 10/10 recommend!
We've been here three times, most recently for an anniversary dinner last night. Their food is consistently great and we've always had a wonderful time. The special cinnamon bread pudding dessert was incredible, and even the starter salad was memorable and delicious.
We went on a Saturday for brunch and were stunned there was seating and we didn't need a reservation. The host and our waiter were absolutely amazing and were all smiles. The food was pretty darn good. We got the pancakes, a cinnamon roll to share and the Croque Madame. Everything was fantastic with the exception of the Croque Madame. The insides were severely lacking any filling. It was mostly just bread. Regardless, the rest of the meal was still great and that one issue wont stop me from returning and trying it again.
The food here was exceptional, with interesting choices that you don't normally see. The staff was extremely knowledgeable and very friendly and made the dinner quite enjoyable. The popovers are a must have. I enjoyed the pork clod. A healthy portion of protein with a cabbage wrap that had excellent chili oil, mustard and a ginger chive oil.
Based on my one visit, this place seems to offer top quality dishes. I went for their $1 oysters happy hour on Tuesday- totally worth it!! & also tried a special dish they had that week. I never thought pork and pasta were a match it definitely shocked my taste buds, in the best way. Reservations are recommended specially for happy hour.
Incredible restaurant! We had a wonderful brunch there. I really like their menu and the selection of brunch dishes to choose from. We ordered the Ham & Gruyere Croque Madame and the Brunch Burger. Both dishes were delicious and very satisfying. The Croque Madame was served with fried potatoes and an arugula salad, and it was absolutely delicious. The burger was juicy and well-cooked. We also tried their homemade ice cream—one strawberry and the other basil—and they paired really well together. The service was exceptional. Our server was very attentive and made sure we had a fantastic brunch. I definitely recommend this restaurant!
Absolutely amazing! This place is warm, classic, service is wonderful and so detailed oriented. Great place for a date! I came by myself and had the salad and the risotto. I took the risotto Togo because I couldn’t finish it so it’s perfect to share with someone if you come with a partner or a friend. I can’t express how welcoming and warm this place felt. I will come here again!
If you don't eat here you are doing yourself a disservice. From the outside, I would never have guessed I would have the quality of food and atmosphere we did. I have had meals at Michelin star restaurants that were not nearly as good, and I have had domino's orders that cost more. Do your self a favor and get a counter seat and immerse your self with the amazing staff. The chefs and wait staff were amazing, offered suggestions, and even went as far as offering recommendations for other eateries and experiences for our trip in Austin. The tasting menu was superb even for someone who's a picky eater trying to be adventurous. The popover and fingerling potatoes were spectacular. I love all things cheesecake and almost skipped the juniper cheesecake thinking I might not like it. Never been more happy to take a leap for the most exquisite desert. Do yourself a favor and make the reservation.
Fantastic female owned and operated spot. For dinner - Get the counter if you can!! Watching this kitchen run is a show in and of itself. The food is phenomenal. I love brunch and dinner equally here. Support this local gem!!! That ‘bay’ flavored ice cream is next level. It is true foodie ice cream (like you see chefs try to do on tv but sounds gross?). This is what elevated dessert is meant to be. Nuanced, interesting, layered, and delicious.
Absolutely loved our experience at Foreign and Domestic tonight! Happy hour is awesome and very worth it! Half off appetizers and wine glasses from 5-6:30 during the week. The popovers and gnocchi are unbelievable! We both loved the cozy restaurant and being able to watch the kitchen do their thing right in front of us. Amazing service and food! Very cool that this place has been featured on shows like Triple D and Bizarre foods! Will definitely return!
The food is great, and the people are even better. The intimate vibe of this restaurant is somewhat unmatched in Austin. We had a great time sitting and chatting over a couple glasses of wine (happy hour ends at 6:30), and took our time working through appetizers and entrees and a dessert. It’s a place that encourages lingering and savoring. We had a vegetarian in the group who was really pleased with the selection. All of the shared plates we had were delicious. (The popovers are in fact worth the hype). I would say this is an approachable menu with interesting flavor combinations that would be familiar if a little new to most. I had the beef rigatoni and it was an amazing combination of your favorite fall stew and a great tomato pasta dish. The desserts were very shareable as well, with unique combinations made by people who understand how to balance sweetness and flavor. I’ll be back here for sure, especially for an appetizer and wine happy hour. Highly recommend this stop.
Simply outstanding. Food was tremendous and service was top notch. One of the best happy hours around that combines delicious unique starters and a solid list of drinks. The popovers and zeppolis are simply a must. To keep the food party going we all got the tasting menu. I appreciate the kitchens attempt to showcase less known parts of an animal and they executed flawlessly. Stop reading this and just come here
We went to Foreign and Domestic on a Tuesday for the Oysters special (super nice and refreshing Virginia oysters at $1) and ended up staying for the four course menu (nose to tail menu) plus an extra appetizer. Overall the tasting menu offers an incredible culinary experience at a very affordable price. Very recommendable! The dishes of the tasting menu are original and surprising and at the same time delicious. We loved each one of the dishes! The highlights in my opinion are the beef tongue (brittle and super tasty) and the sheared lamb heart (a first time for me, with a very interesting texture). The latter comes on top of an amazing risotto! The appetizer we ordered, onion escapes tempura, had an incredible twist to it thanks to the mustard seeds and buttermilk sauce. The service was very good. Our waiter was super friendly and made a great job on explaining the dishes of the menu and the whereabouts of the meats and produce used. The dishes came to the table in a perfectly timed pace. We were told that the menu changes several times a year so we will be back to try new and exciting dishes!
Food and service were amazing! Only reducing 1 star because the wood booth seating was incredibly uncomfortable. Please have cushions on hand for back support, at a minimum to offer upon request (especially for pregnant ladies / older folks, etc). My physical discomfort really took the whole experience down a notch.
Foreign & Domestic has a tight, focused vibe and a menu that refuses to phone it in. Everything feels intentional. The dishes are creative without being weird-for-the-sake-of-weird, and the execution is strong. Apps and mains are dialed in, clearly handled by a kitchen that knows what it's doing. If you're bored of the usual farm-to-table shtick around town, this place actually earns the “unique menu” praise. That said, the drink situation is a letdown. Beer and wine only. If you want something beyond a glass of red or white, you're out of luck. Space is small, so expect tight quarters and some noise. They handle it well, but don't come here thinking you're getting a quiet date-night cocoon. It’s cozy, not serene. Service is friendly and on-point. Staff know the menu, move efficiently, and don’t make you feel rushed. Bonus points: you might get an impromptu Shakespeare warm-up before dinner if you’re lucky. Austin gonna Austin. Bottom line: excellent food, inventive menu, great people, weak drink program. Go for the food, accept the noise, and pre-game your cocktail somewhere else.
Solid overall. Nice neighborhood spot that wish I had in my area! Food was great but a few slight misses. Pop overs were a bit in the dense side and our duck fat potatoes were under seasoned and didn’t taste much of duck fat. Pasta was solid, gnocchi was incredibly delicate and flavorful. Enjoyed our time there and ready to visit again.
What a cute spot! First time here as I passed through Austin this was the restaurant I made a reservation at. The food and wine were great, portions were satisfying, the chairs could have been more comfy, some tables are just sitting on and leaning against wood which my back didn't love after traveling all day. The only complaint I have is the line cooks chose to clean the grills while guests were still present which filled the room with an overwhelming cloud of smoke and aroma that agitated our senses. Would recommend and would come back!
The market fish was a tiny, chewy swordfish without any flavor. But the side that came with it was delicious. The popovers are huge, pricey and doughy. Very kind welcoming staff from entry to table! They may want to clean the baby diaper table in the ladies restroom. It was filthy.
Came here once before and enjoyed it, but this time we left with a bad taste in our mouths (literally.) My partners pasta was so salty he could barely eat it, and my steak entree came out cold. Waiter was so busy he never checked on us during service, and when told about the disappointing food made no means to correct it. Outdoor seating is not fully tented in, has heaters, but is cold. Disappointed by the experience.
