The Iron Bear Austin Reviews
Home of some of the best waffle fries I've had. The drinks are great and reasonably priced (I went at lunch, gin and tonic was $5.72), and I enjoyed the fried chicken sandwich but star of the show really were the fries. Whatever coatings they use are excellent, and they're fried to perfection. Couldn't recommend them more.
So good we went twice! Seems like more of a neighborhood bar which is what I prefer. Bartenders were friendly and drinks were good. Didn’t have the food. They advertise as bear-owned but the crowd was very diverse and friendly (not saying that bears are neither!). Good music and videos. Went on Saturday night which is country night after 9pm. Also had NCAA women’s final four game on the TV so assuming they probably have other sports on at other time. Over a cool place to hang out for a few drinks.
Great Gay Leather Bar with lots of Fun events. Definitely recommend checking them out ahead of time to see what themed nights they may have in store for you, if you wish to dress accordingly.
Your local “Cheers” bar with great staff, service, and good bar food. It’s a great alternative to 4th Street.
I literally love this place. If you are in the area or debating on whether to come or not, GO! Josh the bartender was awesome and made the place feel so welcoming. I love Josh!!!
I was in the neighborhood and got hungry and thirsty. Decided to stop by for a bite. Had me a chicken ceaser wrap which was amazingly delicious BTW and waffle fries which were nice golden crispy! Yes please!
Dropped in while visiting Austin and we had so much fun we came back a second night. Super fun and inclusive environment, good crowd, great bartenders and overall good vibes throughout. Good music and strong drinks. 🐻
The food here is undeniable, so freaking good. Beer prices are ok but Tuesday Poker night is where all the fun is out. Hands down my favorite place to be. And if you see big Daddy Kyle give a shout out for me. That guy is the KING!
Hospitably charming bartenders in an LGBT space, where you can meet new people when quieter - or - dance it up, play pool, or have some fun during busier times! The bartenders will take good care of you and it'll be a nice time. It gets busy and loud during peak hours
Just moved here from out of town and was told this place was a comfortable bear bar so I took my lunch break here recently. The prices on the food seem reasonable in comparison to where I moved from the space is impressive. It's a very big or atleast big looking bar. I can only imagine how packed it must get during peak hours. Parking was a bit of a challenge but I managed to find some paid street parking. I can definitely feel the pride here it's all over the walls and all haha it makes me feel at home in an otherwise unfamiliar place. I ordered a smash burger "The Bear" and a sweet tea. My food was out in 10 minutes which is appropriate and was really good. The portions were bear approved. I look forward to stopping by again to visit the night scene.
Went for lunch, quiet but polite staff. One of the only places that serves angry orchard anymore. The dill pickle chicken sandwich was top tier.
Great gay, bear-centric bar. Big, lively depending on when you go. Went on karaoke night. Great song list, but the DJ that night caters to regulars, not visitors. All good, but don't expect to sing your song anytime soon in a room full of regulars, lol Super fun to watch though. Customers and staff are super fun!
Been to a couple of events and tried the food. Am pleasantly surprised at the taste of the entrees offered at this grungy bar. Getting a burger whenever possible is a must. It's the right amount of fresh and simple. The greasy patty cannot be argued with. Events are lackluster, and meant for the target audience. Messy Bear: chili, queso, onions, & pickles (I had tomatoes added and there was a mess from eating this burger)
When there are no screechy women here, it’s great! Gays: tell your female friends that they are guests in our safe spaces and should not be obnoxious. Know when it’s time to go so that we can be with our community.
Loved this spot when it was at 8th street. The 6th street location is great too, but its attracted a different type of crowd. Very confrontational and needy group of people. Because of the new personalities, I haven't returned. And ive tried a handful of times... and still had several uncomfortable and even aggressive experiences. Miss it, honestly. But its a new era thats not inclusive for their original clientele.
It was good until I tried to order a drink. I get there and waited to be served. The bartender once he was done and charged the other customers, walks by me and then turns around to have a conversation with the people he just finished with. The other bartender came from his side of the bar and got me the drink I ordered. I've always felt at times the Iron bear (some people there) are kind of racist but that's just me. Besides that issue, the drink was awesome and the atmosphere pretty chill. I only went because my friend had never been there but at least next time he knows where it is so he can go on his own because I sure won't.
I live in the neighborhood. I have stopped in for lunch several times; but I never feel welcome when I go. The bartender is always distant and aloof. I'm looking for a friendly LGBTQ atmosphere for lunch in Austin. It is not here. I will keep looking.
