Shuhei Beachwood Reviews
Excellent experience despite its tucked-away location in the rear of a commercial building. The signage is small enough that you could easily miss it without GPS. We were a party of four and were seated immediately. The restaurant had a great vibe, and the staff was extremely friendly. The warm sake was a tasty accompaniment to the meal. My wife and I shared four sushi rolls and an appetizer, all of which were delicious and tasted incredibly fresh. The food was also served very timely. They offer a wide variety of menu options, all fairly priced. We're already looking forward to our next visit to try some of the entrees!
Shuhei is hands-down one of our favorite sushi spots in Cleveland. From the moment you walk in, you feel like you've stepped into Japan -- the staff wear beautiful kimonos, the ambiance is calm and elegant, and they even have traditional floor seating for a truly authentic experience. The sushi menu is extensive -- everything from the freshest sashimi and classic nigiri to creative specialty rolls. Every dish we've tried has been beautifully presented and incredibly fresh. You can tell the chefs take pride in both the quality and artistry of the food. It's the perfect spot for a date night, special occasion, or quiet evening out when you want something a little more refined but still welcoming. Shuhei is a Cleveland gem and a must-visit for anyone who loves authentic Japanese cuisine! This is truly a hidden gem and the restaurant is in the basement of the brick office looking building. Parking is plentiful and in the back where the entrance is.
One of my favorite sushi places on the east side. I used to work near by and would have it for lunch one a week! Quality sushi at a fair price. Made up for dinner and we shared a boat. That is six futomaki rolls and two orders of tamago. Highly recommend if you are in the Beachwood area. If not, it also worth the drive.
Went here based on allot of people recommendations, was not disappointed, food was amazing, as first timers to sushi restaurants ( other then good quality, grocery store sushi) this was out of this world. We went with a bento box that had a variety of sushi, tempura fried shrimp and veggies, we also ordered the spicy tuna and it did not disappoint at all. Service was great, our server was friendly and answered all of our first timer questions. If your new to sushi or been eating it forever i highly recommend you try it!
Great sushi selection, and they had unfilted sake.
This is a quaint little place that is almost like a secret spot. Service was very friendly. The fish was fresh and Sapporo ice cold. The prices were amazingly reasonable. I will be coming back again for lunch and dinner.
Fantastic sushi and experience! I have never had this good of service. I swear the waitress topped off my water 9 or 10 times.
Hidden gem of Beachwood. Super extensive menu that is quite authentic. The wait staff wears kimonos that provide prompt service and gave insight to what's good on the menu. Highly recommend, we will most definitely be back again!
Best Japanese food I've ever had. We had appetizers and main meals and walked out so full but so happy. I didn't even know this place existed until recently, but I will be back soon for sure! The staff is friendly and helpful and the food really can't be topped!
Great atmosphere and even better food! Sushi was great and streak was awesome! I highly recommend this restaurant.
Two thumbs up for authentic food, nice setting and attentive service. Had a family dinner here and all loved it. The rice gives the quality of how the sushi is prepared. And here it is top of the line. An upscale but hidden place - by hidden I mean the entry to the restaurant took me a moment to figure out once turned in from the street and you are facing a divided 2 lane exit only ramp down... You want to check this place out if your a Japanese food goer
Wonderfully delicious food and great service! Bento box comes with a little bit of everything. I had the salad stir fry with scallops and wish I had taken a picture. Not only was it very tasty but it’s a very colorful and attractive looking dish!
Great atmosphere and food was top notch. I thought it was really cute that the servers actually wear kimonos. Literally the hidden gem of Beachwood. I couldn't even get a picture of my shumai because my husband and I literally inhaled it lol.
This is the best sushi I have had I think. Full house and they don’t take long to get your food out. I’ll be back.
Great experience. Super fresh sushi, wonderful service. Quiet and enjoyable surroundings. Had The Black Widow - crab sushi rolls. Delicious!
The food is fresh and delicious. Love the quaintness and clean atmosphere.
The food at shuhei is always outstanding. They've always been one of the best Japanese restaurants in the area. The quality of the fish they use it's head and shoulders above most other sushi restaurants
Really enjoyed the food and the drinks
Love the sushi! When I am traveling to the area I always stop in. The service is always wonderful and friendly. The sushi is fresh and always delicious. Highly recommend.
EXCELLENT!! Nice atmosphere. Staff is very friendly. Food was fresh and very delicious.
Food was excellent. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive
This feels like a hidden gem to me. Im from Cali and we don't play about our sushi! This place was great. I will make it a point to visit Shuhei on every trip to Cleveland. Like, it's literally a checkbox on my itinerary. Highly recommended.
Authentic Japanese experience... Service is exceptional, the servers are friendly, they wear kimonos and are happy to explain the menu. Extensive sushi and cooked entree offerings. Hard place to locate, it's in back of a building, but beautiful interior space. Highly recommend if you are in search of a great meal, fantastic service and fresh sushi.
Genuinely one of the best sushi places in Cleveland. My family has been coming here for the past 7 years and our friends have been going for around 20 years. Fresh ingredients, authentic food and really friendly staff. I’ve never had a bad dish or experience just overall incredible food!
Arguably the best sushi place in Cleveland. They have fresh, delicious food and every dish I've tried is just as good as the last. Wonderful atmosphere with great service that always makes sure we are well taken care of. Definitely worth the extra bucks!
Incredible. Very fresh and skillfully prepared food. Friendly service.
This place was delicious, from the appetizers, miso soup, house salad, and entrée. The servers were in traditional kimonos and provided excellent service. My husband loved the drinks served there. (Japanese whisky, and beer)
Best sushi I’ve had. My favorite place to go
Whether for dine-in or takeout, I've never had a bad meal in over ten years of dining with Shuhei. Their staff is excellent, the food is incredible, and the atmosphere always seems inviting. Thank you for being awesome, Shuhei!
Cozy sushi spot. Almost a secret spot but not, and im glad because they deserve your patronage. Great selection of authentic Japanese food complete with the pickled salad. Staff is friendly, helpful and fun. 10/10 would smash here again.

Rating: 4.5 / 5 --- Want sushi roll recommendations or sake pairings?
TL;DR - great quality, great service, enjoyable atmosphere It starts off in kind of a neat way, because it isn't visible from the road, there's a sign, but it's quite unassuming. You drive around to the back of an office building and sure enough you'll find it. You walk in and are greeted by a much more authentic sushi atmosphere than I was expecting from outside. Went on a Monday night, it was pretty busy but we were seated right away. Our hostess was very friendly and gave us some great recommendations. Ordered a couple (small-ish) bottles of sake, an appetizer, some nigiri and a few rolls to split. The crunchy shrimp tempura appetizer came out quickly, it was hot and delicious! The sushi was pretty dang good too. My favorite was definitely the crunchy spicy tuna roll. The tuna nigiri was pretty pitiful, thin and not as flavorful as I've had other places. Unagi and tako were very good. My biggest gripe, and lots of sushi places seem to do this in Cleveland, is using JUST krab stick in their rolls, instead of making it into a krab salad beforehand. Makes such a huge difference in taste and it just comes off as lazy when it is omitted.
I was going to a concert with my companion and I'd read about and been recommended to this place by someone in a Facebook group. I was pretty excited to try what was billed as "Authentic Japanese". Anyone who's familiar with actual Japanese cuisine knows the struggle. The atmosphere was nice, service was great, food was a bit of a miss. They certainly appear to try to be "authentic", and they come close, closer than most any non familiar with Japanese food person would be able to tell, but just not quite. One of my favorite dishes is Agedashi Tofu. I cannot tell you how hard it is to find this dish prepared right. Nearly all of the non Japanese owned or operated "Japanese" restaurants don't come close and many offer what is actually Korean or some other form of "fried tofu", with the Korean version being my least favorite, fried portions of tofu that are very dry and bland, in my experience. This place came close but there were issues. First there were two huge blocks of fried tofu, and it was actually prepared right, but never have I had such large chunks. They're usually several small cubes. They did get the bonito flakes right but I found them not nearly as smokey as they should have been, almost non existently smokey and didn't add to the dish as they should. There was absolutely no greenery, scallions, nothing. The sauce was very almost watery tasting and not very flavorful. Needless to say I was disappointed. Second would be the "giyoza", which was actually the topic of the Facebook group post on someone looking for authentic Japanese prepared giyoza. This place is definitely "not it". The "dumplings" we got were deep fried, in a shell that was thick and powdery tasting to eat. Just not in any way remotely like actual giyoza. The sushi nigiri we ordered was fine, much like any other decent sushi place, so no complaints there. Lastly the Nabeyaki Udon took forever to come out, the tempura to go with it even longer, and the broth was different tasting than expected. At that point we were pretty full, pressed to get to our concert as the wait for our food had set us back. We took the Udon to go but later found the noodles had soaked up all the broth and it was pretty unappetizing. The Yakitori was ok, not the best but not the worst. Lastly, the place is a bit hard to find. The frontage from the street looks like office buildings or something residential and you have to go around that and down a slope to the back bottom of that to get to the actual restaurant and even then we weren't sure we were at the right place until we entered. Overall, while most people will probably enjoy this place, someone who knows Japanese food, may not.
Hidden gem...Authentic feel and phenomenal service. This is one of those places that if you didn't know about it, you'd never find it (my kinda place). Took my 11, 12 and 17 y/os and there was sushi that fit everyone's tastes. My favorite dish was the Miami Heat.
Set back from the main road, ample parking. Great quality food - definitely a 5 star; for such a high quality food, the service can be improved. Lunch menu is good, but other items can be ordered if you wish. Worth a visit if you are in the area.
A very interesting place, "hidden away," you can't really find it by accident. Impressive- the waiters are in traditional clothing. Good menu choice
We've been coming here irregularly for many, many years. The service is sometimes exceptional, and sometimes ok. The atmosphere can feel a little stiff occasionally, but it's really quite friendly. The food, for us, has always been fantastic. Improved authenticity may be found elsewhere, but Shuhei serves excellent fresh Japanese cuisine in a midwestern city.
We went there with a 6:30pm reservation on Saturday. We understand that they were quite busy but service was very slow and the server was not attentive. We told her that we share everything but she brought only one tempura dipping sauce which was almost impossible for us to share so I asked her for another dipping sauce. Then another person brought it with a ball pen sticking out on top of the small dish which I found very rude. Japanese will never do that. I was born and grew up in Japan so I know Sushi and Japanese service/manners. Shrimp Tempura & Vegetables were good as shrimps were big and cooked nicely. I expected better sushi as the owner chef is Japanese but they are catering for locals who do not know well. Rice was hard. Rice is very important for sushi. Omakase was a good quantity but not for the quality. Unagi was nice and soft but the Spicy Scallop roll didn't taste like scallops. We may go back there for Tempura but probably not for sushi.
The staff was nice, the dining room was clean and the interior is nicely decorated. The calamari was tough and the portion sizes were extremely small for the sushi. In fact, these were the smallest portions of sushi I have ever seen for a California roll. We will be trying to find other sushi restaurants to try before returning to Shuhei.
Been there for dinner by my self, since I came for business. The interior design very simple but giving very warm home feeling. The waiters dressed in Kimono, very nice. Ordered a Miso soup, fried tofu, fresh salmon salad, and sushi. The soup was ok. Tofu was good. Salad was so delicious, I don't remember when the last time I was so impressed by salad. The sushi came on traditional beautiful plate. The taste was not bed, could be better, but the structure was not good, when I just touched them, they are crashed, the sushi assembly was bed. So, 1 🌟 for interior, 1 🌟 for the salad and 1 🌟 for good service. 2 🌟 reduced for the sushi since it is a main dish.
Good sushi. A bit disappointed in portion size for price. Pictured was $65. Didn’t taste truly fresh but was still enjoyed. I think I will try somewhere else before returning here again.
The sashimi was delicious and very fresh. My husband and I ordered the platter that feeds 3-4 people for takeout. Unfortunately for the price and the implied number of people per platter. We were disappointed and unfulfilled. It's just not what we're used to when we order platters in other places. Again, for the bit that we did have, it was still really good.
Food was ok, no flavor. I may try sushi next time. I was in rush and just ordered something. Salad was not that fresh.
Food was ..... okay. Lacked taste. Having lived in Japan, for 14 years, we expected a little more. The best thing we got was the sashimi and even that was not great. Vegetables were soggy. Both, the steak and the pork were tender, but not much taste.
I wanted to love this place, but it just wasn't great. The food was just ok. Fresh, not bad, but not worth repeating. The service was a bit slow. The ambiance wasn't great.
Since Hiroshi sold the restaurant, the food quality has gone down. The rice today was very hard, and when I told a couple of people, they just shrugged it off. No one seemed to care. I have been going to Shuhei for 30 years, and now the restaurant seems just average. There are better more authentic Japanese restaurants in town.
Came for lunch for the first time...if you like flavorless, dry yesterdays chicken that was microwaved for 4 minutes. This is your place!! The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is due to the sushi. Other than that...🤢
Rice was hard and too sweet. Portions were ungenerous given the price point. Service and atmosphere were good. I would absolutely not return here for sushi.
Food was absolutely terrible. Stale seaweed, lukewarm rolls. They were probably premade, and the rice was old. I'm very disappointed and surprised this place has good ratings. My first time and will never be going back.
Well, I’m sad to say that it looks like Shuhei might be spiraling into the ground. I have been frequenting Hiroshi’s restaurants since he first opened Shujiro. In fact, I learned how to love Sushi at Shujiro. I have also frequented Shuhei since it opened and had high hopes that there would be a smooth transition between Hiroshi and the new owners. Unfortunately, we had a very bad experience tonight, on Mother’s Day of all nights. We placed a to go order over the phone at 6:00pm. We were told that the order would be ready at 7:30. That was a long wait but we were ok with that as we were waiting for a guest who was due to arrive from out of the country. We were all set to pick up the order on our way home from the airport and at 7:20 we got a call that our 7:30 order wouldn’t be ready until 8:30. How could they not have known until 7:20 that they couldn’t complete our order and why another 70 minutes? I’m still baffled by this. Very very disappointed and angry. Definitely not rushing back.
