I neglected to take a photograph of the fabulous pastries!! My first time at the bakery, I am a Brewster resident and delighted that we have a high-quality bakery in our neighborhood !! I’ve heard good reviews from friends! Looking forward to checking out the bread the quiche the soups etc. compliments to the pastry chef clearly …I’m assuming French trained… bravo!! If you are looking to treat yourself or impress your guests you don’t need to head down to Westchester!!! Wishing you luck!

We went about 25 minutes before closing. We thought we would be rushed to order, but the lady taking our order was patient and helpful! We tried the key lime pie, NY cheesecake and macaroons. They were DELICIOUS! We will definitely be coming back!

As a former pastry chef. General bakeshop is my go to for French style desserts. Their macarons are a favorite of myself and my toddler. And their different spins on the croissants are a well loved surprise. I don't think anyone can be dissatisfied with their pastries

S
Samantha Graczyk

General Bakeshop has filled a much needed void in Putnam—a high quality bakery with care, attention to detail, and only the finest locally sourced ingredients. Everything is impeccably hand crafted and tastes divine. The Santa Rosa Plum Danish and the Bonfire Croissant are to die for! There’s also a wonderful selection of desserts, unique salads, and healthy lunch/dinner options. There’s something new to savor every visit!

Shockingly good. This store is a welcome addition to the area. Outstanding quality of baked goods and coffee. I have not tried the savory menu items yet, but I am going to assume they are excellent as well. Cream puffs, cannolis, macarons, key lime pie … all outstanding. This place is the best bakery in the area by far. Nothing even close to it in quality. A+++++

J
Jasmina DeRenzi

Great place 👌all around from food to decor. Top quality ingredients and the Chefs are talented culinary artisans. The pastrami and turkey is smoked on the premises. Everything is baked on site and delicious. Service is friendly and helpful.

Bread was so fresh, crispy and soft. It’s about time we get quality bread in this area. Have to go to lower westchester for anything comparable. Pastries were also great, croissants and macaroons. Recommend to anyone local

Visited with the family for breakfast and was thoroughly impressed. Enjoyed the BEC breakfast sandwich as well as chicken orza and NE clam chowder soup. Bread included with soup was right out of the oven. Looking forward to going back for lunch as I heard they are also smoking meats!

I purchased the Bouche de Noel from the new General Bakery in Brewster, NY for Christmas 2021, a bit pricy but everyone totally enjoyed this spectacular cake!!! The cake was moist and had great chocolate flavor. Will purchase more from them. Congratulations and good luck!!

I've tried the breakfast and the desserts from here and have not been disappointed yet! The girls behind the counter are very nice and the food is fresh & delicious. I recently special ordered a chocolate mousse birthday cake and it was light, fluffy, rich, flavorful and filling. The menu items are a bit pricey, but at least you're trading it for good quality food!

Very kind. Bakery goods were very good. The special chicken fried chicken was amazing. I didn't get his name, but the baker was so kind. He talked with us. The staff were very kind. I hope to return soon. (Creme Caramel, cream puff, key lime pie)

We have had great lunches here before. I took my wife here for her birthday breakfast. She (and I) loved it. Everybody was festive and the food was extraordinary! The eggs were made special for her in a plate with very nice rye toast on the side. We will definitely return here for breakfast or lunch (or a delicious pastry snack!)

J
Jennifer Yee

Impressive array of pastries and ready-to-eat savories, like soups, salads & dinner plates. Be sure to get one of their delicious sandwiches and take home a loaf of sourdough.

M

David and Michelle are fabulous chefs and the wider Brewster area could not be luckier to have them!! The straddle that very tricky divide between bread and pastry, doing both very well. I love great pastry and have been looking for a place like this for years. We drive 25 minutes to get there with no regrets! Thanks guys for joining the pantheon of wonderful pastry shops! We are beyond grateful 🙏

We were so thrilled to find this place while connecting from the Danbury rail trail to the Empire Bike Trail. Absolutely delicious sandwiches and baked goods (we sampled a scone, cookie, and a jelly-filled donut with an ideal jelly to dough ratio). Fantastic sourdough bread used in the sandwiches, which are generous in size. We also stopped by for a shot of espresso in sweet cups on our return trip, which was lovely. The owner, David, is so kind, as is the staff. We will definitely be back soon!

Awesome baked goods. Ham and cheese croissant was fab.

Great service, great food, and great atmosphere! Pearl and Brianna provided excellent service! It made for the perfect stop to have a hot pastrami sandwich, a chicken pesto parm sandwich, and a latte with my wife and Benedict on a rainy day.

S

Great place to stop by and grab a coffee. The coffee is fresh. They have nondairy options for lattes. The pastries are also fresh and they sell savory items like pizza and hummus. I will definitely be back. The folks at the counter are friendly.

So excited for this new addition in Brewster! The atmosphere inside is great and you can tell they take great pride in their store and treats! We have tried some sweet treats and tried their croissants (best ive ever had!) and bagels. Everything has been delicious!

J

My favorite cafe! Right next to my house. They have the worlds best beacon egg and cheese there is swear by it. Their savory and sweet items are delicious but their Coffees (iced oat milk latte) is godsend its creamy and thick. Overall if your going there the things i recommend is any flavor of the macaroons, iced oat milk latte and a beacon egg and cheese. hope you enjoy if you go.

I don’t normally leave reviews, but had to for this place. Stopped here on a road trip from NYC to Boston & am SO glad I did. The food is EXCELLENT. Service is fast and the shop is so cute. Everything is homemade. Best food I’ve had in a while!!

I have had many bacon egg and cheese sandwiches in my life, but the ones from here are LIFE CHANGING. Some other items such as their macaroons, bread, and donuts (to name a few) are so delicious as well! Definitely recommend, just a little pricey.

This place is a gem… is a great addition to the community. Brewster is lucky to have this great bakery where you can get great pastries, foods, sandwiches, soups, coffee and great service too. Before they opened I had to travel all the way to Mount Kisco to find Kouign-amanns and other similar quality pastries, now I can have them fresh whenever I go to GB.

T
Thomas Castriota

Their egg and cheese sandwich on the brewster bun is one of the best I’ve ever had. And I’ve had a LOT of egg and cheese sandwiches in my day. Their donuts, key lime pie, and pastries are fantastic! The counter staff are all so nice and helpful. The only negative? Don’t get a half-decaf coffee - I’m not sure what it is but it’s just meh. Full strength is the only way to go.

C
Colin Oswald

Stopped in for an early on the road breakfast and was initially worried by the prices, but I was not disappointed! BEC on house made bun was best I've ever had and the jelly donut was amazing too! Worth the premium price tag for a premium breakfast.

My son and new daughter-in-law had this cake made for their wedding 11 days ago and it was absolutely fantastic! David was very accommodating and is a great pastry chef as well as a great baker. Growing up in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, I had some of the best bakeries and I’m glad that Brewster finally has a place to go to. Try them once and you’ll be going back regularly!

K
Keith Tallbe

This place makes their own everything and uses all butter (seems sorta silly but lots of bakeries cut the butter in their baked goods for ease of making and cost). We had their breakfast sandwich and pancakes. The sandwich was on a homemade bun which was like a biscuit and a bun had a baby - soft, buttery and almost fall apart tender yet sturdy enough to maintain sandwich integrity - unique and delicious! The bacon was also thick, crispy and super tasty. The pancakes were also clearly homemade, not a mix, and were well done, soft but had some body, and very flavorful. Service was fast, professional and courteous. 10/10!

I’m local to the are and me and my boyfriend stopped in to get a little treat! And I was absolutely blown away, the staff was so friendly and kind and one of the girls complimented me and I don’t think she realizes that she made my day! We got an almond croissant, a molasses cookie and onion and poppy seed bagels with cream cheese! And I can’t forget about the absolute best Iced Chai i have ever had!! so delicious and the quality is worth the price point which isn’t even that bad! super delicious!

The menu may be small, but the flavor is big!! Breakfast is served all day, and lunch is served from 12 to 3pm. I had the breakfast sandwich, which comes with 2 cage free scrambled eggs, bakers bacon(not exactly sure what that is, but it was good, lol) and cheese on a brewster bun. The inside of the bread was perfectly toasted and buttered, and you could taste the crisp edges with each bite of the edge of the brewster bun. I ordered a side of the home fries, and I was not disappointed!!! I'm assuming rosemary and thyme. The home fries had some crisp to them but were also soft. The cook personally brought the food out along with a pitcher of water. To go, I left with a cinnamon spice doughnut and a jelly doughnut with a house made jelly. While sitting there, I saw someone order a slice of the carrot cake, I asked how it was, and they swore by it. I decided to take a slice of that home also.

Months after my original review was written (see below) we are now regulars. The breakfast sandwich (egg, cheese, bacon on toasted soft, fluffy buttery roll) is a special treat. The baked goods vary, but always look fantastic. Initial review: Baked to perfection! Our first, but far from last visit to this new bakery in our town. So we purchased a variety from what they had to offer: pain au chocolat, almond croissant, blueberry muffin, Boston cream donut, cheddar dill scone, huckleberry scone and for lunch :orzo salad and quinoa salad. The baked goods were absolutely perfect. Crispy golden flakey croissants. The sweets not cloying. Blueberries galore. Rich dark chocolate coating the Boston cream donut. On and on. Same with the take home salads. Just right. Yum! Next visit we're going for the breads. And I'm a home baker. Not even jealous. This is so far beyond my aspirations.

My husband and I were traveling home from New England to KY just after Christmas. We had never been to New York before and knew we had to get a bagel before going home. I ordered the Salmon bagel with everything on it (onion, tomato and capers). Wow. Honestly, I almost shed a tear it was so good. We got croissants to go, and those were amazing as well. The shop is adorable, I wish we lived nearby so we could be regulars! Will definitely need to visit again!

I just tried the chicken pesto parmesan sandwich. On oct. 4th around 2:30 pm we waited about 10-15 mins. We were the only ones in the store and once I received my sandwhich I was not disappointed. I have never had this before and it easily exceeded my expectations. Great job! Worth every penny!

Out-freakin-standing. Friendly folks, awesome food. We were visiting from out of state for a couple weeks and went back 2 or 3 times. If I had to neg I'd say that my family of 3 adults can't get out of this place without the bill creeping up on a Benny. Not because things are overpriced necessarily, but because it's hard to control our urges. Everything looks so good and everything we've gotten has been as good as it looked. I kept getting the salmon bagel. It killed me to pay nearly $20 for a bagel, but it was so good I guess the little man in my head thinks that I it's legit a $20 bagel.

I've been wanting to try this place since it first opened. The oatmeal raisin cookie was incredible! I certainly would go back for their baked goods. Their potato salad was okay. I think it could have used a bit more mustard. The chicken orzo soup was good, but a bit pricey. I'm happy to see that building finally occupied again! I hope General Bakeshop does well.

Great bake shop in Brewster. (Formally norms restaurant and bar) I enjoyed a breakfast sandwich and very hot cappuccino. I took a few cookies to go 2 chocolate chip and ginger molasses.

Delicious coffee, 2 gluten free options, not celiac safe. Disappointed.

The donuts were inedible. Very tough texture. Bad flavor

Bought a 6” chocolate mouse cake. Didn’t ask the price ahead of time. Was shocked to find out it was $50!!! The cake was good but so is the same cake at Whole Foods for half the price. I’ll never go back.

Extremely overpriced and nobody seems to know what they’re doing. Ordered an Italian sandwich meant to be on focaccia. When we received it on baguette and questioned wasn’t it meant to be on focaccia the server shrugged her shoulders and was basically like “I dont know.” We’ve been many times and WANT to love it and support a local business, but the high prices and poor service leaves a bad taste.

I was so excited to hear this opened but my hot chai latte was literally cold after waiting way too long for it. The service was so bad, very unfriendly and overpriced. Will not be going back

Had such high hopes for this place based on the reviews. Small seating area. All the tables were dirty or needed to be bussed. One table outside over top the dumpster that smelled. All this was not seen until after we ordered or probably would have left. Stood by the “order here” sign and no one came to help, had to flag someone down. Had to move dirty dishes that were not busses and wiped down my own table with a napkin and hand sanitizer. Was still hopeful for the food, but was disappointed. Ordered an Italian combo and chicken sandwiches. The Italian combo was so salty. Included picked vegetables and olives, as well as olive loaf as a deli meat. The lettuce in this cold sandwich was so wilted, it was rancid. I could not eat it. The fried chicken sandwich was drenched with a strange sauce that was no good and the chicken tasted oddly of fried fish. For four of us to get food and drinks, and bus our own table, it was over $100. Absolutely horrible experience.
