I visited Pismo Beach from the Bay Area and was craving for some good Indian food in areas nearby and decided to try Shalimar. The staff here is really friendly and inviting. This is a family owned restaurant where the owners try to make everyone comfortable. I saw several regular visitors being warmly greeted and welcomed by the owners. We dined for a dinner on a Thursday night and the restaurant was more than half full. We ordered Chicken 65, Garlic Naan, Cilantro Naan and Karahi chicken. The chicken 65 was better than lots of Indian places in the Bay area. The naan breads were soft and delicious. I would have preferred if the bell pepper and onion pieces in the Karahi chicken we're smaller instead of the gigantic pieces, but nonetheless they tasted absolutely great. Most importantly, the service and interior environment were really amazing and made for a great dining experience. Highly recommended for trying Indian cuisine in the San Luis Obispo area.
Great first day at their new location. Glad to see so many people enjoying their cuisine. My favorites are of course their Tikka masala with their garlic naan. Their lunch buffet is always a good deal but they also have an extensive menu with over a dozen breads to choose from. The owner is always active and friendly too which I love to see.
My sister is a boss. Not a literal boss, but figuratively. At least that's what an employee at Shalimar thinks. I've been called a boss figuratively many times, but my sister told me that when we went to Shalimar it was her first time being called boss. It seems to be a thing that guys only say to other guys. I was happy for her and she seemed pretty happy too. It's nice to feel like a boss for a little while. I'm usually called a boss when I'm ordering food. I remember getting a sandwich at Subway and when I was about to pay the employee asked, "would you like a cookie with that boss?" At that moment I felt so in charge of my life. I wanted to say, "Yeah I will take a cookie...maybe boss might even get two. Then big boss man will get milk to dip cookies in". I didn't end up saying any of that. I thought it was best if I were a humble boss, so I just replied, "yes please". All I'm trying to say is that girls and guys should start calling girls "boss". Who doesn't want to feel like a boss for a little while? Anyways, the food was delicious and the service couldn't have been better. Definitely the place to go if you want to feel like a boss.
OUTSTANDING food and EXCELLENT service!! Almost any dish can be converted to Vegan just ask the owners and they also offer a gluten free Garlic Naan!! My hubby and I were in heaven! My husbands father was born in Lahore Pakistan and makes excellent food so I’m a bit spoiled. This place was fantastic!! ENJOY! Hopefully you like this review!
It makes a difference when you get the “desi” taste being away from home! Shalimar makes the same difference! I was here for a Sunday dinner. The food was delicious. Although I didn't have much, but there are a lot of varieties. Staff is courteous and ambience is nice! Drinks selection is also good, they have the traditional Indian Lassi as well. This place is worth visiting if you really want to have a taste of authentic Indian food.
Walked in for a late lunch with a party of 3. We waited for the hostess to sit us which was immediately. We opted to have the Buffett. There is many items to choose from and a small salad. The salad also has fruit, cucumbers, and a rice pudding. The rice pudding was so good. The tandoori chicken, curry chicken, and the garbanzo beans were delightfully flavorful! Restaurant is extremely clean and so were the restrooms. This was my 1st visit and I will return when back in the area. Thank you for the great experience!
COVID UPDATE: The buffet is still open and they’ve managed to do it in a way that is pretty safe. It’s still “buffet” style where you get to stuff your face to your hearts content, but the main difference is that they have staff serving you. You approach the buffet area and they set up a table in front as a barricade as well as plexiglass. The staff wear gloves and masks, and they help you load up your plate with whatever items you point at. It’s obviously not as convenient as it was but it’s a great compromise. There is patio seating outside with umbrellas and if you come early you can avoid the crowds. ORIGINAL REVIEW: + Easy parking in a huge shopping center. Never any issues finding a spot even during their busy lunch rush + Beautiful outdoor patio seating with colorful umbrellas that provide shade + Indoor dining area is open, bright, spacious, and airy. Decor is very minimal but they use pops of color effectively + Fresh naan is sooo goood! Unlimited for the buffet. They are thin, light, chewy with a crispy exterior! + Buffet bar is small, but has a decent amount of offerings and a good variety for both vegetarians and meat eaters. I love the buffet because you can try a little bit of everything + They also have a salad/dessert bar. I love the rice pudding and milk balls in rose water. SO GOOD. The fruit and salad is always fresh as well + Tiki Masala, Saag paneer ALL DAY. + Fantastic service that is really good about clearing dishes, refilling water, keeping the buffer station clean, and bringing out fresh naan upon request. + Enjoy a nice, hot, sit-down meal with cloth napkins in a beautiful restaurant without the slow service. + Great lunch spot if you're in a rush. You pay at the counter when you're done with your meal. Super fast and easy. + Lots of office people come here for a fast lunch so it can get crowded and busy + Great affordable price. Bang for your buck! + Clean restrooms in the back. + Shalimar is also at the SLO Night Market!
Went to Shalimar today for lunch. The home of the frostiest mugs, excellent food and friendliest people. Lamb samosa - delicious lamb and spice filled pastries. The tamarind sauce is too good to be real. The spiced sauce is refreshing and goes great with the samosa. 9/10 Cheese fritters - no idea what cheese is in these but it has the texture of a queso fresco, really good seasoning on the batter, just needs some sauces to go with it. 8/10 Mango chicken - got it medium because if it's over 75 degrees outside its inhuman to do the hot level. Delicious, rich earthy and not too sweet mango, there is something in it like a potato, it says mango in the menu but I have no idea how they can make a mango like a potato. 10/10 Chicken manchurian - Spicy, thick red sauce with a taste of jalapeno or similar peppers, onions and boneless chicken. It gets hot but it's so worth it. 10/10 Cilantro naan - Nicely blackened bread with seasoning and cilantro on it. Basically the Indian tortilla. It allows me to over eat like I do in my dreams. 8/10 I'm not a bread guy. Beer mugs - Always a fresh one. Always frosty as can be. Always brought out quickly. Service is a 11 out of 10. The owners are the nicest people I've met in the restaurant business. Always great to see them even if I'm just passing by. Great family people.
Awesome food, ambience and service! We had asked everything to be spicy and it was perfect for our taste. The vegan cabbage batter was our favorite curry today. The quantity of veg biryani was more than most restaurants but was delicious. We had methi naan, garlic naan, aloo parata, daal makhani and mango pudding. Tasty tasty! Will definitely visit again.
Food: 4/5 Ambiance:4/5 Me and my friends were craving for some Indian food. So we went to one of the three available Indian restaurant in San Luis Obispo. Order: Samosa, Chole Bhatura (pathura), Paneer tikka masala, Garlic Nan Food was good and we knew what we were ordering and trying nothing new. Chole bhatura and Samosa are highly recommended. My friend who is regular suggested this one. Chole are good however bhatura was kind of oily but you can always ask them to replace if it’s not eatable. Samosa are perfectly crispy on the outside and tasty from the inside. Paneer tikka masala is perfectly seasoned and creamy with garlic nan complementing it. Overall good restaurant and service
The food was good but the lamb skewers were bland and the chicken kebabs had too much spice.
Some of the most delicious food in the area. I love their lunch buffet. A selection of jasmine or brown rice, around 4 vegetarian mains, 4 meat mains, as well as plenty of sides and a salad/dessert bar. I've been coming here for years, and the food is always delicious, hot, and fresh. The goat curry is one of my favorites - on the spicier side, but incredibly flavorful and tender. The Palak Paneer is my favorite way to eat spinach. I don't normally like green peas, but their green pea curry was tasty enough that I would've gotten more if I was still hungry. They have a buffet at lunchtime, as well as Monday for dinner. Tuesday-Sunday, dinner is ordered from a menu, with an even wider variety of items than what is offered at the buffet. The employees are always friendly and greet and see you off with a smile. The tables, drinkware, and silverware are all clean. Outdoor seating is available. An excellent choice for lunch or dinner!
Very friendly staff, Monday night buffet is fantastic value and the food is top notch.
Recommend the tiki masala, white rice and naan here. I went for lunch and got the 11.99$ buffet special. Service is great and the staff is very friendly. Very spacious with lots of natural light and an outside patio. Lots of parking as the restaurant is in a strip mall. Also they deliver to anywhere in SLO
Delicious buffet and a very warm and laidback atmosphere. The food is rich and spicy but not too hot; great vegetarian options, they mix up the buffet but always have fan favorites like saag paneer, chicken tikka masala’s, tandoori chicken. It’s family owned and they make you feel very welcome, even gave my baby daughter a stuffed bear the first time we ate there when she was about 7 months old; we now eat there about once a month because we love the food, price point and environment.
This is a great deal for lunch. Delicious food and great service. Strongly recommend this for lunch or dinner!
They have a wonderful selection of dishes, all my faborites, sauces, salad bar and fruit. Best Indian buffet in San Luis.
The service I received was very fast and friendly and I was very satisfied with the quality of the food. The food was fresh and the buffet was always full. Great management and it had a family atmosphere as it's a family owned restaurant.
10/10 I ordered chicken biryani , chicken karahi, lamp seekh kebab and shrimp tikka and it was sooooo sooo good . Whenever I am coming to San Luis Obispo I am definitely coming back here
Wow. Food tastes unbelievably delicious. Owner is so friendly!! We just came for rugby but sooo glad we stopped for food.
Some of the best food in SLO! You truly feel like a part of the family!
Great food. Great service. Mango Drink was refreshing. We are from out-of-town 1st time coming in for the brunch service will definitely be back when we visit again.
Lovely restaurant atmosphere with a great owner and staff. The food is amazing. There are vegetarian, mild to spicy, lots of meat options, etc. One of my favorite things to eat is papadum! I get it with every meal!! I love their korma. I love paneer too! So many options.
The owners are very welcoming, the food is outstanding, and there is a cozy patio to enjoy while eating outside. I enjoyed watching the beautiful aquarium while I was waiting for our order. We had the Vegan Aaloo Bangan, Vegetable Samosas, Cheese Naan, Paneer Tikka, and Malai Kofta, all of which were tasty... with plenty left over for tomorrow! There was a small mistake with our meal and the owners more than made up for it! I was so impressed with how everything was handled. We will definitely be back and would highly recommend this restaurant. 10/10
Really good lunch buffet and recommended stop when traveling down here.
Only one thing to say, THE BEST RESTRAUNT! I have been visiting this place each time I am in San Luis Obispo. Their food is amazingly good and customer service is second to none. Food is served fresh and taste is just finger-licking good. I wish I lived closeby because I would be back every day, especially during the buffet hours. Just LOVE this restaurant 😍
Monday night buffet is a long standing tradition for my husband and I, it’s an awesome value for some amazing food. Dine in atmosphere is great and family oriented as well. Lots of vegetarian options!
the garlic naan, rice, mango chicken, butter chicken, lamb and vegatable biryani, palak paneer, and chai were all great!! the atmosphere and service is also top tier. highly recommend
This is the best restaurant I have ever been too they have the best food in all of San Luis Obispo 100% would recommend for any meal
The owner of Shalimar is amazing! The mango lassi is delicious. Would highly recommend visiting the restaurant & visiting their booth at the SLO Farmers Market.
Shalimar is a hidden gem in SLO. I was craving some authentic Indian food and Shalimar delivered. We are vegan and the vegan options were all marked clearly. The Bhindi, parantha, samosas were all yummy. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Felt as if we were back home in India. Really good place for good food and good people. Will definitely be back.
We went here on a recommendation from a friend, which turned out to be great! Everything we ordered was good! Our daughter has a dairy allergy, and they made sure we had dairy free options. Excellent service, very accommodating, and we will be back!
The food and service were both excellent! Food came out hot and delicious. Our server was very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. The owner was the most friendly and welcoming person I’ve ever met!
Nice family run restaurant. The food is nice especially considering the cost. Everyone is extra nice and genuine. You don't see that much in restaurants any more.
The best Indian I've ever had! The fish take that greats you is absolutely FABULOUS!!! It's a must if you're ever in SLO.
Went for the lunch buffet. Great food but wish they let you order off the menu also. But good food.
This establishment offers a buffet dining experience, with additional à la carte options available from the menu. The default spice level is mild, though supplemental spices can be provided upon request. I strongly endorse this establishment for your consideration.
Family owned and operated. Home made food, great service excellent value. Delicious food. Ample parking. During lunch there is usual a preset buffet and for dinner you can order off the menu. The naan is to die for.
One of the best spots to eat in SLO. The food is truly fantastic. We love the catfish pakora and butter chicken, every dish is fantastic! The garlic naan is always ordered! The service is excellent as well, and the cost is so reasonable order extra for take home!!
Walking in our whole party was treated with the upmost respect. Service was quick and the quality of the food was amazing! We had children with us and all the staff was so great to them. The food was delicious and I can’t wait to return for another meal. The man that I can only assume was the owner made our visit better than anything my family could have ever expected. Sir keep it up this was one of best restaurant visits ever!
Not only was the restaurant incredible—from the warm, inviting vibe to the delicious food—but their thoughtful menu really stood out. They had an excellent selection of vegan dishes, and the staff went above and beyond, offering to customize options to make them fully vegan. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming that it instantly felt comfortable and special. We left with big smiles on our faces, feeling truly cared for. It was such a wholesome experience, and the prices were unbelievably reasonable. Can't wait to go back there!!!
Wonderful little restaurant in San Luis Obispo that serves the best Indian Food on the central coast of California! Not only is the food incredible, the service is also excellent! We come from the southern California desert in the summer and this place is always at the top of our to do list! Highly recommend!
Lamb kebab 9/10 Paneer 10/10 Got the butter naans and they were amazing! 10/10 Lamb vindaloo was 9/10 excellent Biryani 8/10 - needs more chicken, put onions on the side. Mango lassi was too thin - 7/10 Overall 9/10 Would happily repeat going here. Amazing humble owners and great servers.
The food was very delicious. It is authentic, halal, and fresh. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. My son doesn’t eat spicy food so they were understanding and allowed it when I asked them if he could eat the fries and sandwich I brought from a different restaurant while the rest of my family dined there. The place is very clean and is decorated nicely. They are so kind to the point that they have an ice cooler filled with cold water bottles for strangers to take.
There is good food, great food, and food that is transformative, and this gem of a restaurant is on the transformative list. From the second I walked in not having a clue what I wanted next to bad pronunciation of items lol They were welcoming, friendly, and ready to explain any and everything to understand what your palate desires. The interesting part is this is the first restaurant within 2 days we ordered three times, and each time was even more amazing. If you know about amazing Indian food or you are complete novice you can come here with absolutely no judgment while receiving friendly, honest, loving advice while being treated like family. I can truly tell you this restaurant is a must try and out of the hundreds of restaurants that we have reviewed this restaurant truly is five star in always possible. Wow a restaurant that will provide you a visit to the kitchen using all safety precautions is strictly amazing. YOU MUST NOT MISS THE RESTAURANT!!! Must haves for the newbie like me 1. Butter chicken 2. Tandoori Chicken 3. Chicken Biryani 4. Garlic Naan (cheese)
Delicious Sunday buffet, I appreciated that the lassi and chai came with the meal. They refreshed the buffet often, and there is a steady crowd. Authentic and delicious!
Me and my son had a great time. We stopped in for the buffet. It was pretty good for the price. I really liked the mango pudding and mint chutney. So delicious! 😋 I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it was kind of small and some things were not as good as I've tried at other Indian restaurants. Still a great treat to have a Indian buffet option in town. 👍
You guys need to know customer service and behaviour matters the most! Customer may compromise on food taste but rude behaviour is just unacceptable. We were visiting this area and were looking for good Indian food, came in at least an hour before the closing time. The person on the counter (owner I believe) rudely said no dine ins and you can do take outs “like what everyone else is doing”. I asked him what is the closing time to understand if Google maps has wrong timing but instead of answering he rudely said, “i am only taking order for take away”. Is that how you deal customers with? Food is a little pricy and taste is okay. Chicken tikka was good but karahi chicken is a mess.
The service and atmosphere at this restaurant is great. The hosts are very warm, welcoming, and they have small gifts and personalized service for children. However, the food is average. The vegetarian and non-vegetarian options are placed right next to each other with high possibility of food types mixing with each other. The number of dishes are very limited (just 4 veg options and 2 non-veg options) compared to other Indian restaurants. There was barely any paneer in the saag paneer, and the kadi (pakoda curry) was not at all like the authentic version.
The food was great. The service? Terrible. Extremely rude people. Also they do not disclose the automatic 20% gratuity. All restaurants should be transparent with their customers. When the issue was discussed with the owner, he was extremely disrespectful and threw money at us.
Vacationing in San Luis Obipso area, searched for a tasty flavorful food and found this place. Honestly, was very annoyed for making us wait without even acknowledging that we were standing and waiting to be directed. Place was not crowded or busy. Some staff were chatting with customers as if it was a social gathering. Finally after 10-15min wait one lady came and attended. Young girl (friendly) took the order, to our surprise within few minutes appetizers were served followed by the entrées. Considering the wait time to be seated we thought order may take a long time. About the food, it’s a mixed bag. Some recommended items could avoided. Some standard items were well made. Serving portions could be better. Looks like this place attracts regulars … they seem to be having a good conversations.
Food was really bland in taste and the mango lassi was actually terrible they should stop selling it. Inauthentic and fake. The only good thing there was the chai. Don't get me wrong the people were nice and friendly BUT please stop selling yourself as an "Indian" restaurant just to get people to come to your restaurant and be honest that you're a Pakistani restaurant!
RACIST and ARROGANT owner Assim - turning away all people of color. Unbelievable. We were an Asian family of 10+ turned away for dinner on Saturday claiming place was booked for private party. Came in again on Sunday at 6:30 PM for dinner and was told 40 minutes waiting when the restaurant wasn't half full. We got seated in 10 minutes may be because our non Asian looking kids were first to walk in to get seating. I saw another Asian family was turned away by sayingt 45 minutes wait tilme. We noticed Only white people were seated in the restaurant. When we were served naan instead of paratha, while the waitress was trying to get it changed, the owner, Assim with a furious looking face came to our table brought the naan back and argued we ordered this naan only and we have to eat it. Totally unacceptable racist behavior and customer service from the owner and his family. This restaurant needs to be reported to city authorities.
It seems that the service went down at this restaurant since they have moved to a new location. The new location looks like it was made for a fast food joint and the host wanted to seat me at a small table with my back to the open patio door to endure flies and insects coming in . I declined and asked if I could sit at another table that was a little larger but away from the door, he stated they were groups coming in and said I could sit outside in the patio's open space , again I declined cause Im just not comfortable with all the flies, bugs and insects outside. Especially coming to a buffet restaurant and sitting outside in the sun with flies and insects. The host(owner) wasn't cooperative and wouldn't seat me away from doors at available table cause I came by myself. So I just decided to leave. So the point here you might be descriminated against and treated less favorably if you come all by yourself and I don't know if I would trust the safety and sanitary food conditions at that restaurant with the doors being open and the kitchen being wide open too. So eat at your own risk, I'm going to the other Indian food restaurant in town till further notice. Bad bad hospitality service and manners. Disappointing.
Skip it! Wanted to try the restaurant for a while. There’s no good Indian on the coast. They were at the farmers market so gave it a go. Had the sampler box. The chicken tikka lacked flavor and the chicken was over cooked. The tandoori chicken was so dry and again where’s the flavor. The naan tasted like a tortilla. The samosa had a little flavor but had no crisp yet it was over cooked. Soooo disappointing
As a tech worker I lived in the bay area for 20 years and have eaten Chicken Biryani from many many restaurants in the bay and all over the world. This place ranks as one of the worst. It's essentially a bunch of rice with yellow dye, some seasoning, and a few pieces of chicken. Please don't call it Chicken Biryani.
We had a very underwhelming experience at this restaurant. We ordered the fish pakora, which arrived raw and uncooked inside. What made things worse was the service. The staff was extremely inhospitable and unwelcoming throughout. No one checked in on us or acknowledged the issues we raised. Overall, we left disappointed. Hope there is change and things get better !
I would not waste even single star for this restaurant but one is for posting requirement. We were hungry and were with children and wanted to just try samosa chaat. Upon speaking with reception were disappointed, she said you can order out of menu and takeout only and are not allowed to dine in as they were going through buffet. I would not recommend this restaurant Please think b4 going as you may get surprised.
The food is decent and I enjoyed the restaurant, so it's unfortunate that the owner was rude. His lack of customer service skills was disappointing, and I can't help but feel the restaurant would be a much better experience if he stayed behind the scenes. I'm not completely sure this man was the owner, i didn't get his name, but he acted with so much arrogance that I assume he can't be fired.
Food was not good. We ordered two different types of dishes and different types of naan. Everything tasted below standard. The funny part is an old lady, apparently from the business owner family, came to charge the invoice amount on our dining table. I did not pay tip cuz we did not like the food and spent $66. She started to argue with me that why am I not paying tip. I asked if it is mandatory to pay tip, she said no but every body pays it. I said I don't want to pay it. She was arguing and seemed irritant for not getting $5 or $10 extra for tip. I don't know why this business put her on stressful job where if someone does not want to pay tips, she argues, gets stress which would certainly cause her BP to go high. She can get heart attack from this. She seemed weak and near 70 years of age. Terrible experience. Will never ever go again to this place and will share my story with my friends on campus here.
Phone reception and management could be improved when orders are incorrect and customers seek support. Also food is ok at best Avoid this place
Ordered chicken biryani and few other food items for dinner last night, but I'm going to just talk about the biryani cuz it was hugely disappointing :( it was no where closer to a biyani. Just looked like turmeric rice with (chicken attached a pic). It didn't taste good at all, I can't even explain how it tasted. Such a bad experience cuz it ruined my dinner. I DO NOT recommend this place for biryani.
This place sucks seriously!! We flew from Fresno to Pismo beach to try this restaurant and we dine in. In the middle of us eating they said they ran out of food Like seriously there is way of saying things We were literally sitting at our table and nobody came in. I myself had to get up twice. No hard feelings but please train your server thanks
Food: We ordered kofta and naans and none of them were fresh. It almost felt like frozen food. Biryani was fresh but very spicy (even by biryani standards). Service was fast. We got our takeout order in 10 min.
I usually never write reviews, but I felt I had to share this. The food was good and everything was going well. Later, a waitress/worker came over and started admiring my baby, calling her cute and adorable. We ended up having a nice conversation, and she even gave my daughter a little teddy bear, which was such a sweet gesture. We were happy with the experience, so we decided to tip more than we normally do because we genuinely liked her. But what happened next left a sour taste. As we were leaving, I said “thanks, goodnight” to her not once, but twice — and she completely ignored me. It made me wonder if the friendliness was just about getting a bigger tip. If so, that’s really disappointing. A tip is a tip, and what we gave was generous and very fair. Unfortunately, her behavior at the end completely canceled out the positive parts of the experience.
Went there seeing the reviews and tried their buffet. Dissapointed with the quality of rice they had and the tandoori was not marinated well, like no salt on the inside. Had high expectations for dessert ‘gulab jamun’ but was utterly disappointed with its quality. Only thing that I ate was their butter chicken with naan. Would not go there again or recommend to others.
We got seated rather quickly, our waiter took our order and we didn’t realize till after we got our food that he never asked us how spicy we wanted it. The Palak Paneer was so spicy we couldn’t eat it, the tofu in it was so over cooked that it was like chewing rubber. The butter chicken was ok but then there was a bone in the food. I don’t recommend coming here
