The Black Whale Bronx Reviews
A nice little-known hideaway in the city for a Sunday brunch... with my significant other P 😘... romantic atmosphere and the food selection is just right, nothing crazy if your one of those gotta get my money's worth type's. Dine on the patio if the weather permits or enjoy the turn of the 19th century furnishings inside. A pleasant staff and family run, no rush atmosphere our favorite quaint little Sunday getway!
The Black Whale has a delicious selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts. I took my girlfriend out for dinner here and we had mussels and the soup of the day for appetizer, and cod and tilapia for main entree. The food was very good. Moreover, the sour dough bread and stout beer selection was satisfactory too. Above all, our server Natasha was attentive to our concerns and made us fee very welcome. Thank you Black Whale.
I’ve never had a bad meal here. Friendly staff, great food. A City Island landmark for good reason. Was told to let everyone know about their brisket and grilled cheese (fontina) sandwich. Delectable!
Love this place. They never disappoint me. I had the rigatoni w/ shrimp, and creme brulee. The watermelon martini was huge..I am very happy to celebrate my birthday there this evening. Thank you my family & the Black Whale family
Such a beautiful place to have dinner. My husband and I had a spontaneous date there. And I truly appreciate the service and food. We will be returning
Good spot. Even today - despite the heat - the outdoor dining was comfortable and the garden is lovely. Always good food. Very fine shrimp, tender chicken. Pleasant service.
This Restaurant came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. I would recommend making a reservation because they are very busy. Are waitress Lisa was so good that my wife ordered a clam chowder to go.
The mushroom ravioli is to die for and so it the shrimp roll my 2 favorites! I tried their duck with pomegranate special and was delicious, great ambiance, super unique place to be with so much charm! A hidden gem!
Food was very good and atmosphere was lovely
As close-knit and intimate as local dining on City Island gets. Atmosphere is whimsical and envelops the senses the moment you walk through the door. Near-magical garden seating out back under the sky is both roomy and refreshing (minus the mosquitos!), and the staff is always ready to help with a smile. Food is always fantastic, with the occasional special that blows me away (Ahi-crusted Tuna Steak <3). I highly recommend a visit if you'd like to experience a REAL City Island restaurant.
Very quaint dining experience set in a WW2 maritime motif. Dont expect the regular City Island fare of broiled lobster or king crab legs. This menu is tailored for a more exquisite palette with a great selection of pasta, fish, and meats. My wife and I shared an oyster appetizer that was stuffed with crab meat that was delicious. Her main entree was shrimp scampi and rice and I had a rack of lamb. Both were perfectly balanced with their sides and portions.
Very nice place on City Island to eat, this place is a "hidden gem" the staff is extremely helpful and attentive, the food is always great and the prices are very reasonable. Been there a few times, never had a bad meal or bad service. Check this place out. Always have nice specials too.
One of the absolute best restaurants I've ever been to, and I've been to Michelin star restaurants. How this place lacks one I do not know. Fantastic food, excellent wait times, quick service, and in the days of COVID, good safety procedures. Only complaint is I don't live right nextdoor to it.
We were trying to go here for quite some time. Got we finally made it. The staff was very welcoming, super attentive and friendly. The food was quite good. The atmosphere was exactly as expected.
One of my favorite places in the world this is what you call Nautical very friendly they care for the client ,great food if you request a drink and they don't have it, they will make it for you anyway it's a place that they will never say to you no, is always a yes and they don't have it they will make it to please you and to make you feel like family very clean organized professional that's what you call a real restaurant all kind of food around the world you name it it's one of my favorite places I highly recommended for you and your family it will make you feel like home so if you think you coming back ,do so because it's the best place to enjoy in or outdoor relaxation enjoying your meal and being family. The owner and the staff are highly professional people who knows how to treat costumers the quality of the food is 200% over a hundred exquisite the place is always very clean like the way you have your home I highly recommend the black whale to any person whose very hungry or family activities or business to have a good time good music good food and good enjoyment. As far as recommend thousands of people and if feedback is outstanding they will be back for family events business events and even romantic evenings .God bless the black whale . Keep it up. My brother Justin and I really really enjoy eating here also with our parents for any event.
Excellent food and service! Both the Waitress and Waiter were super nice and did a Great job in making me and my girlfriend feel welcomed. Love the environment too! Definitely recommend for a Date or even to go solo for some food. Got the Meatloaf and it was amazing, definitely will order again. And my girlfriend ordered the Chicken Penne Allá Vodka and she said it was Great! Loved it in every way! Will go again soon!
It is a very unique restaurant. They have antique's on the wall. The back yard outside patio is beautiful. Especially when it starts getting dark, they put small tables candles and they have lights drapped across the back. The canopy from the tree in the back of beautiful. The food is amazing.the menu has a good variety to choose from
Love this place! Atmosphere is awesome! Outdoor dining area is so cozy! Wait staff is super friendly! I love the food! I've been eating here for years! One of the very best in City Island!
Going early (around 530pm) we were able to find plenty of parking and had the restaurant practically to ourselves. The waitress was quite attentive and had a friendly demeanor. The food was delicious and the portions were just right. There were so many delicious options to choose from though if you're vegan, I wouldn't recommend this because there are limited choices - evem the lentil soup is made with bacon. I would def return.
Still the cutest and quaintest eclectic little Jewel on City Island. Been going there for over 20 years and their chocolate cake is to die for
Sunday Brunch. Cool place. Delightful outdoor patio- garden seating with a collection of nautical artifacts scattered about. The hot and cold brunch buffet had much to offer along with a waffle and omelet station in the garden. Staff very courteous and service very efficient. Will return.
The BEST Dining experience I have had in City Island. Best Crab Cakes ever! The food is amazing! Service and atmosphere are good.
The Black Whale is where the Islanders (Clamdiggers) go to eat and celebrate life events. The food is always excellent and they never try to rush anyone out the door. The owner really cares that every customer has a quality dining experience. In warmer weather patrons enjoy the outdoor patio, the perfect spot for a romantic date night. Sunday morning brunch is another feather in their cap, you can have an omelette or waffle made to order from the lavish home style buffet! What a great spot with charm galore.
Such a great spot on City Island! Very cool historic interior. Loads of food choices and all our dishes were delicious. Great wine also!
Love the Black Whale. A favorite for both locals and visitors. Food is good, The Owners and The Staff have been there a long time. I recommend this to Clients as a Real Estate Broker and a City Island Resident as well. Love the atmosphere. Maureen and Bill Hraska
Possibly one of the most unique atmosphere's on City Island. Everywhere your eye turns there is something special to see. Great food, fresh ingredients, wonderful friendly service.
Sitting out back at the Black Whale having dinner on a warm summer evening with friends after a long day on the water is always the perfect day for me. The Black Whale is a true City Island gem where you can relax and enjoy your meal and conversation in a homey atmosphere without feeling crowded or rushed. The food is always on point.
This is a very local restaurant. This is a great restaurant with superb food preparation. Good variety of food on the menu. Staff is friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. There are bigger restaurants on City Island, but you won’t find a better restaurant.
I've been going to the Black whale since I was very young. It is my all-time favorite place to be. The backyard is like a Zen garden in the summertime with bamboo trees and the serene ambience. The food is always well prepared and served with a smile. Great prices, great food, great atmosphere, great service. What more could you ask for. ❤️
Really good food, awesome garden and great service, the waitress was so kind. I ordered a potato soup with spinach, chicken fajita and brownies with vanilla ice cream, everything was delicious and big, we had to share. Definitely a place to come back!
Extensive menu with excellent food, super friendly service and the decor and cleanliness were top notch! We will be back.
One of our most favorite restaurants on City Island! Great lunch and dinner options - indoors or outdoors in the summer - and a fantastic Sunday brunch! Do yourself a favor and check it out - it's worth the trip - like a vacation dinner right in NYC!
I recently dined at Black Whale, and it was an absolute delight from start to finish. The moment I stepped in, I was greeted with a warm ambiance that instantly made me feel at ease. The service was impeccable; the staff were attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. Now, let's talk about the food - oh, it was a culinary masterpiece! Each dish was meticulously prepared, bursting with flavor, and beautifully presented. From the appetizers to the desserts, every bite was a delightful journey for the taste buds. The restaurant itself was a gem, with stylish decor and a cozy atmosphere that enhanced the dining experience. Whether you're looking for a romantic evening or a gathering with friends and family, this place ticks all the boxes. Without a doubt, it deserves a perfect 10/10 rating.
Haven't visited in years, actually decades, however this has always been a traditional place on the Island. As I remember, the cuisine was always exceptional. I do believe, that they have maintained their premier excellence of deliciousness. Perhaps, because would always visit, with friends, after sailing around the island on our boats, (mine christened the Deep Blue Princess), searching for the great Whale. Ages ago, all long gone, down to Davey Jones Locker, both boats and friends. We were enormously ravenous for a hearty feast, after a long hard day on the water, matey. And this place always delivered the hidden treasure. Postscript : Anyways as the old marnier saying goes, "The second best day of your life is when you buy your first boat. But the absolutely best day, is when you sell her". 💙💜💙 Cheers Matey 🍺⚔
I ordered the grilled NY steak meal, having a taste for steak on my mind all day and boy oh boy, it did not disappoint. Compliments to the chef. The steak was seasoned throughout and grilled to perfection. Nice, tender, and juicy. The mashed potatoes and vegetables were seasoned and cooked well, too. I recommend this place if you're in the area and want to enjoy a nice meal in a peaceful environment
Always a fantastic place to dine in! Each year we make it a point to go, at least once for our anniversary. This year did not disappoint at all, in fact, exceeded my previous experiences. We had the special of the night: porterhouse steak and broiled tilapia with peach, new fav Ciderboys drink, and they made our night extra special for our ten year anniversary by providing a candle lit creme brulee with raspberry sauce. Service was impeccable, and Maurice was lovely to chat with and Ariane was very attentive. Thank you all for making our night extra special!!
Great spot for a nice upscale meal on City Island. Good beer selection, great cocktails and food. (Made a reservation, so no wait)
The ambiance alone keeps bringing us back. Cocktails are clearly made by someone who knows what they are doing and we always look forward to seeing what’s on the specials menu. Want to play it safe?…angel hair bolognese or the meatloaf. The garden is lovely during the warmer months, but the charm from the main room cannot be beat.
fantastic experience Four of us arrived there as soon as it opened, and the staff members at the restaurant provided us with excellent service. We chose the main courses, which require more preparation and attention, so even though it took a little while for the food to reach us, it was well worth the wait because everything was produced in-house at the restaurant. We got the salmon, meatloaf, weekend special, and chicken, all of which were cooked to perfection. The food itself was fantastic. You can certainly enjoy a dinner with your family, friends, or a date at the restaurant because it is beautifully decorated and the environment is comfortable and attractive. Wonderful experience!
Hidden gem on city Island. This restaurant has the best sweet potato fries I've ever tasted! Usually, sweet potato fries aren't very crispy but at The Black Whale, the crunch on both traditional French fries and their sweet potato fries are unmatched. The restaurant has a very rustic feel and the service is phenomenal. You're always greeted with a smile and a warm welcome. I haven't dined in, but it's usually not too crowded so you can expect to be served relatively quickly after beeing seated. Highly recommend their Penne Alla Vodka with Shrimp!
Wonderful atmosphere, outdoors while away from street noise. Excellent menu; delicious food; first class, warm, gracious service. Our second August birthday dinner there. Will dine there again.
An absolute delight. The back patio is quiet and dreamy (consider bug spray on a summer evening). The cocktails were well-made, the mussels heavenly, and the fish is prepared with love. It was the perfect capstone on a City Island day.
I LOVED the calamari. The service was excellent. Wide variety of food and drink options. Their City Island Iced Tea was yummy. Although I wish they had space for a separate bar area, I look forward to dining there again.
Delicious, perfectly cooked, well prepared, lovely order taker, outdoor area and dimly lit quaint setting, highly recommended, intimate atmosphere.
Really cool place with excellent food and great staff
I've been coming to Black Whale for years and always recommend it. The food is amazing, service is exceptional. It's a great date spot, especially when it's warm out and the outdoor area is open. I recently visited with a group of family and friends, commemorating my mother's life. I expected a few people to show up, which is what I told the staff at opening. However, over 40 friends and family showed up and the staff didn't miss a beat. Service was great and the food was I've come to expect. The best Mussels! Thank you again to the amazing staff, truly made it special.
Beautiful time with a delicious menu, friendly, warm and welcoming service. Drove out for kids first meal on city island and it was a hit. Our family eats wide range of food and all were happy!
Took some friends for the Sunday brunch on City Island in the Bronx, which was absolutely delightful. Reasonably priced the buffet pretty much had more than I had hoped for. If it wasn't there, they'd make it for you. Everything was cooked perfectly. The staff is just as nice as could be and the atmosphere is kind of bohemian, antique-like. Street parking was easy. In the nice weather you can dine in their outside garden. It's really a very nice experience.
Love this place, from the minute you're in you'll feel as if you walked in Grandma's house. The outdoor sitting is just as cute, and homey. I love the shrimp penne vodka. Service was great! One of my favorite restaurant in City Island.
Just celebrated my daughter’s 25th birthday at The Black Whale yesterday and had to write this review and let everyone know about this hidden gem on City Island. A small, quaint, quirky, magical, Alice in Wonderland like place that exceeded my expectations. Thanks to everyone at The Black Whale for making my daughter’s birthday a magical experience. I found out about this place by reading their reviews and they not only lived up to the many reviews I read; they knocked it out the park! From the moment I called to make an inquiry and spoke with the owners granddaughter Luna, I was sold! She was amazing from that first phone call to the very end of the night after we left the celebration feeling full and well satisfied. We celebrated in their courtyard out back under an eclectic covered patio, which was reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland! The evening was magical, the food fabulous and the staff amazing! Hat’s off to The Black Whale, their owner, hostess, wait staff, cooks and everyone who helped to make my daughter’s birthday a memorable one! Also a very special thank you to Luna, who is the Gem of The Black Whale. Please go check it out! They won’t disappoint!
The most unique place with the best food and service! We love coming here through the year. It feels like a secret hideaway! They have a nice variety on the menu and usually have delicious specials as well. The "Starving Artisit" is one of our favorite dishes and the muscles and clams appetizer, the seafood salad appetizer is also yummy and so fresh! We also love getting one of their big entree salads (cobb is my fav with steak on it). Highly recommend!
What a cool spot!!! So happy to have found this awesome restaurant with such excellent service. The staff was wonderful and very inviting, and the ambiance inside (and in their adorable back garden) = unmatched. Food was also excellent, and they let us sit in front with our dog (and brought him ice water!!) That’s how you stay thriving after 60+ years I guess. We’ll be back very soon!
Great little place! Excellent food, service, cleanliness, and atmosphere! Tired of having to book a reservation in Brooklyn three weeks in advance and still being disappointed? Then take the drive out to City Island and see how it's done!
Love this fun restaurant which has great is 1970s vibes. Mushroom soup. always. Pappardelle and meatloaf both yummy. Choc plate cake. Service is cheery and family-like. Wouldn't change annything
Wonderful experience. We got there as soon as it opened, a group of 4 people and we had a great service from the people that worked at the restaurant. The food took a little while to get to us, but we ordered the main courses that require more work and details, so since everything that we choose was made at the home made at restaurant, it was super worthy. The food itself was excellent, we ordered the salmon, the meatloaf, the special of the weekend and the chicken (highly recommended!!!), everything’s cooked perfectly. The restaurant have a beautiful decoration, the space is cozy and beautiful, so you can definitely enjoy a meal with your family, friends or a date. Great experience!
This is my favorite place on the island. Staff are very attentive, cordial and friendly. Menu is top notch. The Black Whale is my favorite dining place to eat and spend a lovely evening with fam and friends. Looking forward to my next visit.
Such an Amazing Gem on City Island! The food is amazing, I highly recommend going in the evening and sitting outside, the ambiance is amazing. The Staff is amazing, and the food is amazing! This is a place where you will not regret waiting for a table.... The food is tasteful, made to perfection, trust me, not everyone knows how to make pasta! And I'm VERY picky when it comes to eating out as I am a chef! So I highly recommend this place!
Have been here many times over the years and has never disappointed. Setting is very eclectic leaning towards nautical and is very comfortable. If you come during warm weather they have very nice outdoor seating. They have an assortment of beers and craft cocktails available. Have had .multiple dishes but my favorites are the tuna dish, crab cake dish, shrimp scampi dish, and the Black Whale Burger is outstanding. Also a good bet is one of their desserts. My favorite place on City Island. Only drawback is that it would be outstanding if they were waterfront.
I’ve had the pleasure of dining at The Black Whale in City Island on at least six occasions. The staff is extremely attentive and read nuances professionally. The menu and specials are creative and never boring. We love the cute outdoor patio and our family feels safe and comfortable there.City Island is a quiet hidden gem!
I came here last night for my birthday with my friends. We had a great time. I called last minute for a table of ten then I changed my mind to sit out there. They were VERY accommodating. We loved the food, service, and drinks. The outside seating area is so unique. We’ll definitely be back!
I was just recently there for my birthday it was different than what I had expected. I haven't been there in many years but the food was good and the atmosphere was nice service was a little bit less then good because we really had to wait a long time for our food. But once the food came it was quite delicious
It's almost like your eating in someone's backyard with all that patio furniture. This is a nice place for an outdoor three course meal. The food is consistently good and the atmosphere is homely. After dinner, take a walk to Lickety Split for dessert, just down the street!
Eating at Black Whale feels like eating in someone's living room. The place is nicely decorated in the nautical theme, but feels cozy and homey thanks to friendly staff. The food and brunch buffet is delicious and features a great selection of American foods and made to order omelettes among other things.
The Cŕeam of Mushroom soup is excellent!! Overall, the food was very good: barbequed ribs w/ broccoli and mashed potatoes was very good. The atmosphere and people were so friendly and welcoming Just as it was back in the early days of this little restaurant AND OUR relationship, 1968!!! So our little reunion with the Black Whale was a sweet moment in time!!!!! ( We'll be married 50 years shortly ! ) Though we stopped on the spur of the moment, the host made sure my birthday was celebrated with a wonderful and huge slice of chocolate fudge cake with lovely strawberry and. Whipped cream garnish ! Thank you Black Whale for a lovely interlude !
Friendly bunch with classic taste. I went to "The Whale" with family members who live on City Island, so the staff actually are friends. That could explain some of the friendliness that received. I had the cream of mushroom soup and it was packed with finely chopped mushrooms. The dish certainly seems homemade. Next, I had the brisket and cheese sandwich, which also had caramelized onions. The thick cut Texas toast finished off. The sandwich was moist and packed with flavor. The fries were cooked to perfection. Ultimately, a solid meal. I would have liked to see more veggies on the menu. My friend had the Artist's Dinner, which had white beans and spinach, but after that you're looking at salad or a veggie burger.
Nice spot to eat when visiting city island. We had a great server.
These is a charming place for a date night or friend get together. The ambience is relaxing, cozy and warm. The back yard whiMISICAL AND CLASSIC. I would give it a 5 star because I believe the menu could use a revamp, such as minus the starving artist plate, add some tasty dishes such as chicken frances or clams oregonati, and maybe some complementary bread with olive oil to dip as we wait. For dessert fresher, entire churros. like 4 pieces instead of 2 cut in half. This place could really soar !
This place is awesome. So accommodating. Luna (our server) was out of this world. If she's not the owner she needs to be a partner at least. I gave 4 stars only because I'd love to see more vegan/vegetarian/plant-based options. Even still this place is magical an I'll definitely return. Has me seriously considering moving to City Island.
First time at this restaurant, service was amazing. The waitress was knowledge and very courteous! Her suggestions were spot on! Very cozy ambiance. My favorite dish was the shrimp pesto. Drinks were delish!Desserts spot on and cappuccino was perfect. Although this is not a steakhouse the NY strip was perfect, melted in your mouth! Will definitely frequent this restaurant.
Cozy atmosphere, meaning very small place. Think a living converted. In warmer weather there's an out door space at the back. Still warm cozy atmosphere. If you looking for an intimate setting this is it. Its a resturant so the food. For the price point.. on the fence. Guess city Island everything more expensive. Back to the food. The Salmon was good, the shrimp and pasta.. for the price.. on the fence.
Always a good place to be when you're there. The atmosphere is so relaxing. I enjoy every time I come through.
Food was ok. My partner swears he had boxed mashed potato with his meatloaf. I had a shrimp pasta that was more like an appetizer, the plate was bigger than the food. The Sangria was very watery. Tips are in cash only!
The appetizers were amazing (Clam chowder and shrimp potstickers). Dessert was also amazing (I'd recommend the brownie Sunday). The service is awesome, everyone was friendly. They made us wait 20 minutes although the back was empty (and sat people who came in after us at the same time). The food was mediocre at best, the drinks were watered down. My salmon was raw (still cold and pink in the middle) so they comped my watery drink. I wouldn't go back if it were free.
They food was OK atmosphere was nice, but they were severely understaffed and we couldn’t get anyone’s attention. Took forever to get someone to bring us ketchup or the check and they have a high (illegal) credit card fee and a card asking you still tip in cash. Feels like there is an owner that is really cheap and doesn’t want to hire staff and will break laws to avoid fees (and maybe is stealing tips if staff is asking to tip in cash???) either way if felt sketchy. I wouldn’t go here again.
I’ve given The Black Whale three honest tries and, unfortunately, each was lackluster. The last time I went I ordered the steak, mashed potatoes and vegetables. The steak tasted as tho it was boiled and maybe thrown on a grill for the grill marks. The mashed potatoes had to have been instant/out of the box, and the vegetables just taste strange. I am disappointed because I love the atmosphere. The food is strangely bad. Considering all the above, everything is significantly overpriced. I love city island and love supporting local businesses so perhaps I’ll try again in a year or so. I’m praying the food gets better.
Updated review!!!!! The food was really good BUT they sneaked in a surcharge if you used a card that was put on a small piece of paper in the check envelope thing They should have told us before we got the check if this is a new policy so I guess pay with cash when you go I love this restaurant but this wasn’t like this the last time I went which was like three weeks ago. Also when asked the waitress said to ask the owner about it who wasn’t there…
Okay this restaurant is aesthetically pleasing and entertaining with nick and nacks throughout the entire restaurant. The wait staff is another story. They seemed to be in a time warp of sorts.. coming to check on my table in 20 minutes interval. It was difficult to enjoy the experience when as soon you look up your waiter is gone for another 20 minutes. Food is okay. Nothing to write home about. Although the chickpea/olive and toasted bread they serve on the house while you wait for your order is divine.
Cozy and relaxing patio setting. The big problem: the wait staff is not on top of their game. The waiter was more interested in putting the chair cushions away for the night than getting our ice cream order correct. When the sundae arrived it was sparse and lacked the toppings that we ordered. The waiter gave us an excuse INSTEAD of an apology that they were closing, and ours was the last order. ...However, there were still several customers on the patio at.. 10:00. I always liked The Black Whale in my 58 years on this earth. I traveled from Yonkers just to be disappointed. Customers first...cushions second...after ALL the customers leave. Attention to detail and people will keep coming back.
I made reservations on Tuesday for a party of eight for a Saturday night reservation which was then followed by a confirmation phone call by the restaurant on Saturday. I confirmed for party of eight. Once my party and I arrived on time for our reservation, I informed the hostess our party was no longer going to be for eight due to members of our party being sick and were not going to be able to make it (this would have allowed you to seat another party of 2 or 3 and keep a table for 5). The hostess handed a buzzer to me. FORTY minutes later we still were NOT seated at our table NOR been notified at the time of being given the buzzer because we were a party of less then six people we would be placed back on a waiting time. I made a reservation well in advance and would have appreciated being aware of a wait time. My party and I were treated like we were just a walk in with no reservations. Why make a reservation? The food was good but way overpriced.....I think in the future I will choose to make a reservation at a different local restaurant that will appreciate my business. I must say the waitress did a WONDERFUL job and was not her fault for the lack of communication.
Horrible service. Our server forgot our drinks until after appetizers, when our entres arrived. Then they gave us 2 non alcoholic drinks. Severely short staffed and person who looked like an owner was just looking busy but not helping to alleviate the backlog. Lastly they had front and patio doors open but still very hot inside. Mini split was off the whole time we were there. Guess they got their rating from locals who don't know what good service is supposed to be like. I don't expect to give them any more of MY money.
