Island Express Brooklyn Reviews
I used Island Express through EZCater for a graduation party. The food was delicious, the portions were generous, they arrived on time, and the delivery person was courteous. I would definitely use them to cater my next event.
What an experience! Walked in and what a difference between this Carribean spot and the rest here in Brooklyn. Between the welcoming staff, clean clean sitting area and two owners who were very involved and pleasant; Gina and Wayne, I was very pleased with my time here at Island Express. Would highly recommend !! AND they deliver !
You cannot find food that tastes this good at prices this low, anywhere in NY. Very friendly staff, too. Excellent choice for pre-show snack (Kings Theatre is across the street).
They Have the Best Beef Patties Hands Down. They Perfect the flakey Crust and Delicious Tastey Filling is Unmatched in All of Brooklyn.I Travel Far for these Tastey Treats..
I ordered the pepper pot along with some pine tart& cheese straw. The pepper pot was honestly tasty& taste like it was made back home in Guyana my first time eating from here will not be my last
Salt-fish and bake with some spinach between; thats my regular order and whoever made it today did an amazing job. I always enjoy their food but it was like extra special today. Keep it up guys.
They were nice enough to open the door when they were closed. Their beef patty and shrimp patty 😍😍😍. It was amazing especially with their tamarind sauce 😍😍😍 Will be trying more food 🥘
Their bake is to die for!! They also sell great fudge, Guyanese beef patties, and other pastries. Lots of things on the menu are delicious, so I'd highly recommend.
GUYANA 🇬🇾 Eat the World NYC review: Island Express is the latest outpost in the empire of Sybil Bernard, beloved Guyanese baker and chef who every Caribbean person in South Queens and Brooklyn knows well. From the outside, it somewhat resembles a fast food burger spot, but thankfully the foods are just as good and homemade as her other locations. Start with the delicious rotis and curry, or go straight for the off menu pepper pot, sometimes available even when no special occasion calls for it.
I would marry their chicken patty with cocoa bread if it asked me. The best west indian food and bread in the area, hands down. If you don't believe me try it out for yourself.
I love going to Island Express amazing staff n of course I love the food and the pastries. I even love my background that's y I'm so in love. 🇬🇾🇬🇾🇬🇾.... b4 I go back up I always go and stock up on my pastries 🥰😍🥰😍. See you guys real soon
THE BEST PEPPER POT AND TENNIS ROLLS I HAVE EVER HAD! Island Express has consistently delivered delicious pepper pot, there is never a bad batch! ALWAYS shop here for pepper pot! You will not be disappointed! The staff is also incredibly nice and friendly. I felt like I was part of a family when I was inside! The atmosphere is very welcoming and peaceful.
The food seemed to be homemade and the staff was very friendly. My GF and I ordered the curry and jerk chicken with rice, curry chicken patties and a few pastries (fudge and sponge cake). The curry chicken was not spicy however, it was well seasoned. The jerk chicken has an amazing flavor, and a decent level of spice. We had ton of leftovers, will be returning!
I am Guyanese and can vouch for the authenticity and taste of this food. Every dish and every baked item is excellent! Good customer service, too! It's one of my go-to spots. I've been telling all my friends about it. Perfect forwhen I'm lazy but still want some home cooking.
We came in as a party of 6 and didn't really know what we wanted. The staff were patient and attentive, and very friendly. The food was similarly fantastic, highly recommended for anyone who likes Caribbean food.
Was working in the neighborhood and was looking for a delicious Caribbean lunch that didn’t break the bank, the lunch special $6 was a home run! Absolutely tasty curry chicken with rice and peas and spinach. Filled my empty belly, and gave me some the fuel I needed to keep on working, thank you Island Express
Fantastic food. Honestly, I can’t stop thinking about it. Got the chicken stew on roti and the jerk chicken with rice. Both were delicious and flavorful and obviously made with a lot of love. The texture of the roti is beyond. The women who work here are friendly and funny. Support this spot! It’s fire. 🔥
Omg.. I never in my life had Patties so GOOD! The veggie patty is amazing. The chicken patty is also so delicious. The outside of the patty is soft and perfectly cooked. The inside has a generous amount of filling and its soooo flavorful!! I recommend !!!
There food is pretty good, They treat everyone like family even they customers. Very friendly and down to earth workers. Their food taste good. I recommend people there all the time. They have reasonable prices too. Don't have to go far for a good meal.🙌🏼❤️
Awesome! Delivered me a dozen and a half rotis pretty last minute for a friend. They were ready quickly and came out so lovely. I’ve been coming here since it was Sybil’s and I’m so glad the quality stayed great! 🫶🏽thanks again!
The food was delicious and satisfying! The service in store was great - the staff member who helped us was friendly, patient and kind. We will definitely be getting food from here again in the near future.
Food here is delicious. Love the split pea cook up. The beef patties are delicious as well. My friends also love the food and the friendly people here. Kudos to the owner!
Curry chicken is delicious, the roti was soft, and the service was great! All meats are boneless, and I'm too happy.
I’ve never tried roti or curry chicken before. The other day I decided to try something new and I’m addicted!!!! It is so delicious!!!! Food tasted homemade and fresh. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. Huge portions for great price. I’ve Been here 3x this week!!! I can’t get enough!!
It is straight up DANGEROUS how close this place is to my apartment. Now that I've had a taste of Island Express, I'm not sure if I can eat anything else. I first noticed the spot on an afternoon stroll and was immediately drawn in by the reasonable prices, as well as the promise of delicious baked goods. I got the Pouri wrap with Vegan Curry (only $6.95) and the portion was so big and satiating that I actually had leftovers for the next day. This is coming from a human being who is notoriously insatiable. The side of okra was probably the most delicious I've ever had, and the plantains were killer too. The cherry on top was the pone--a sweet pudding with yucca and coconut--which took this sweet-tooth maniac out of this world, and was unlike anything I've ever had before. Don't pass this place up!
My Son Love Love Island Express, his favorite dish is Roti and Curry and he loves getting it from there. I enjoyed the Fish Cakes yummy 😋 overall I will continue to support them 100%....Keep it up guys
Great curry it’s amazing!!! Fish cakes were out of this world I am in Love with the food here! Highly recommend!
Their cocktail beef patty is a must-try. I could eat it every day. Chicken curry was a bit bland but overall a good deal with the lunch special.
Had this for the first time today and it was so so good! I got a bowl with the rice & peas, curry chicken, okra, and channa. The okra was a little tough in some parts but otherwise everything was excellent. Really great flavors that come together well. I also got a cocktail beef patty and guava tart which were also excellent. Will definitely be coming back!
As a chef I never eat outside. Only if my friends make food. Yesterday we visited this place with a group. Since I was very hungry I made a simple order of rice & peas and beef carry. It was very balanced and moderately spiced. Last month my Caribbean friends cooked an incredible lunch for us. The taste was identical to island express.
Absolutely love this place! Food is excellent and the establishment is super clean. Food is always fresh and very kind staff. I was shocked at how inexpensive the pricing is. This will be my new go to spot for when I’m in the area.
Went on my many adventures in search of good food, I haven’t been to this area of Brooklyn in years, it’s great to know this authentic Guyanese culture is here making a stamp on the food nation. It’s was my first time going to this restaurant, the jerk chicken was absolutely amazing. I definitely will be returning to experience more of the menu.
This is the best Caribbean restaurant that I visit on a regular. This family business is very customer oriented and values customer satisfaction as their #1 priority.I live in Harlem NYC and whenever I call and order dishes,I can request that they freeze for me until I show up in Brooklyn the next day to pickup. The food & the staff is great, they address me by my name and a big smile when ever I show up. See you tomorrow for my cornmeal porridge that I ordered for my breakfast @ home next week.
Delicious Guyanese food for a great price. The same workers have been there for a while; they are friendly and remember customers, which always makes me feel welcome. Highly recommend!
I travel from Long Island to get my goodies from Island Express... I absolutely love the cheese rolls. Everything is delicious. Authentic Guyanese food!!!
Those 2 Guys at the front serving have great Customer Service. Omg. Love them. What made me felt special was when I went back there 3 days later, they remembered me. Nice and tasty foods. I ordered Guyanese style Chicken Patties, Butter Flap, Pine Tarts, Chowmein and Cook up Rice with chicken. Now I'm dribbling...lol
Nice in and out Guyanese restaurant in the heart of Flatbush Avenue. While the food looks good , I mostly go there for their baked goods. I love, love, love their Guyanese cocktail beef patties. They are always hot, fresh and juicy! My husband only buys tennis rolls from them because they are the absolute best we've had. Truly reminds you of home!
Love the Guyanese patties! They are fresh, soft, well seasoned & the right meat to crust ratio! The pinetart guava tart cheese rolls salara cheesestraw & roti skins are very good, compared to others I've tried. Been going here for decades. Haven't had the cooked food recently, but it's usually good. Call to see if they are open on Sundays. The few times I tried, they weren't.
Very spot on. Good prices too. I ordered the Guyanese chicken curry with Roti. It had reminded of my late uncle Saleem from GT. God rest his soul. Almost wanted to cry for a moment, tasted like childhood... I can still hear him say Koff hard! Will visit again!
first time i went some where and vegetable patty was filled with different vegetables (mushroom, beans, peppers, etc ) walked in to drop some flyers pine comb tax got a veggy patty walking and eating i taste it so i had to look in as i see all the diff veggies i double back for another
Everything we ordered was delicious! We had the oxtail, fried fish, plantains, chicken roti, and beef patty. I could eat multiple beef patties -- the crust is so flaky. Plus, they had our order ready much faster than estimated through Seamless. Can't wait to try other items on their menu.
Wonderful and inviting place to eat. Amazing customer service only exceeded by the mouth watering menu. Great modern update of Sybils a family owned store that relocated and rebranded itself with a fresh new look and attitude. The menu explains what all of the tasty items are and there is a separate line for both hot prepared foods & baked goods. This is a rarity in NYC establishments and makes service speedy and efficient. Island Express is a 1st class place to dine!
So delicious!! Had the Jerk Chicken and it was amazing! I'll definitely be going back.
Real guyanese ting here !!! The flavors are incredible and every dish was rich and authentic. The bakery items were so fresh, soft, and full of flavor. The sorrel was especially delicious, perfectly spiced and refreshing. Oh also their prices are reasonable.
i had roti chicken wrap and then again i ordered chowmin… its so delicious lil oil healthy stuff… two guy working there are very energetic, really great atmosphere
Everything was flavorful and fresh but the chicken patty was a highlight. Quick service, friendly staff, and ample seating. 100% recommend!
I stopped by Island Express in Flatbush this evening because I wanted to try something new, and I’m really glad I did. When I first walked in, I was a little unsure of what to order and must have looked confused because the gentleman behind the counter immediately asked if he could help. I explained what I was in the mood for, and he kindly walked me through the offerings and showed me the different Caribbean dishes available. I loved the open concept of the space, especially being able to see the kitchen and how clean and organized everything was. The bakery selection also caught my eye, so in addition to a curry chicken dinner, I grabbed two chicken patties and some sorrel. The chicken patties didn’t even make it home. They were that good. The sorrel was absolutely delicious, and everything tasted fresh and well made. Nothing felt processed, which made the meal even more enjoyable. I don’t come to this neighborhood often, but I can say for sure that the next time I’m nearby, I’ll be stopping in again, especially for the chicken patties and sorrel. Definitely worth a visit.
This was my first time. I asked the gentleman serving the food what I should get and he suggested curry chicken and roti and it was delicious. I ate the entire meal with my hands as this is customary. I could just eat the roti alone 😋The atmosphere was clean. It’s a very open space with a huge community dining table in the middle and window front seating. Very affordable! I will return to explore the menu further!
I can't go a week without stopping in for my usual order. The staff at Island Express matches the cool vibe perfectly. Each course revealed new heights of culinary skill. It appears family members run this restaurant and are notably hospitable. The spot maintains exceptional quality.
The servers are prompt while the menu offers good variety. The dishes satisfy completely. The energy helps you enjoy your meal. Workers here provided perfectly timed assistance. I want to try their other creations next time.
Delicious lunch special. This fast casual spot caught my eye. Everything looked good to me but I wasn’t sure what to order, so I asked the server to make it like he was eating it. I wound up with BBQ chicken on white rice with chickpeas, and every bite was savory. For <$10, this spot is a great bargain if you’re on the move. The spacious table and clean atmosphere was super welcoming too.
Sybils is the original name. She is Guyanese giving our cultural cuisine and bakery of plush tasty pastries, bread, cake, roti, purie, bake and patties. I can go on its Guyana in Flatbush Brooklyn
This is a Guyanese owned establishment. I was pleased to learn this when I entered and read old guyanese sayings on the walls and a brief history on its birth. This brought back fond memories of my own since I am also Guyanese. The place was clean and the staff seemed eager to serve. I was happy to have a taste of home. They serve dishes like cook up rice, chowmein, ochre, fried plantain, fried rice, pastries and cakes and their own fruit juices. I will be visiting them again. What can be better? Maybe some guyanese or west Indian music sometimes to complete the feel 😁
Staff is super friendly and welcoming. The environment is clean and offers plenty of seating. Food is good, with a good amount of flavor and spice. The only downside is my opinion was the mushy rice and overly thick Roti skin. Other then, I enjoyed the food and will come back.
Return Visit As expected, returned yesterday afternoon. They sold out the lo mein ☹ Had another curry chicken roti.. It was good..but not like the 1st time. Perhaps because the chicken was just prepared (the sauce was watery-not their fault though). None the less it was good. The side of spinach was delish.. but this go round the plaintains though still sweet, it needed to be cooked more. Customer service was top notch. Next time I will come earlier...I want the lo mein🙄🙄🙄 *********************************************** Initial visit: Visiting friend in the area and IE was strongly suggested....and I'm a finicky eater..especially over the last 3 months.... Nice clean place. Food display is inviting. The customer service is welcoming. Both the server and the cashier (staff) were very polite. Loved the BONELESS curry chicken roti and the vegetarian lo mein.. omfg.. the plaintains..sweet and soft...yummy! The scent from the food and pastries....ahhhh! This place made me break my "diet." Food is dangerously good for a person trying to lose those last 10 lbs. Not sure if I can stay away.. and the summer is coming..😕 That was my first time there.. I'm sure I'll be back VERY soon! 😶😶😶😶
The food is great and delicious. They sell a lot of Guyanese and other Caribbean dishes including pastries. In addition, they sell various types of bread. The restaurant is very clean and visually appealing.
We had the lunch specials; chicken curry & ox tail stew. We came in at 11:30 and waited till about 12noon when everything was ready. It was worth the wait! The chicken curry was tasty with white & dark meat, some potatoes and chickpeas. I ordered my with roti. The oxtail was also prepared fresh and flavorful. Not too salty. The meat was tender and it came with carrots onions. We would go back again! Thank you Island Express.
Everytime i come to Bk, I look forward to coming to Island Express for their bakery items. The restaurant is clean, AC is on and the temperature inside is pleasant. Their staff is always great! I was helped by two gentlemen the other day, one of them resembled the late rapper Nipsey Hussle, which they both were so kind and patient as i always get a lot of bakery items each time I go. The other day I was a little disappointed in the cheese rolls, as they were kinda hard and didn't taste fresh like they normally do, everything else was fine and tasted great! I also got a peanut punch which was pretty tasty, maybe a little more nutmeg than what I'd prefer, but still was pretty good.
This is no frills fast casual dining with a very clean inside and a decent amount of seating. The service is quick. They run out of their plantains so be ready with a back up for side options. The prices to portions are great, I paid $15 for oxtail and $11 for goat curry. One dish is definitely enough to fill you up. The only thing I'd change is I wish the oxtail leaned in to the taste of the beef more with a stronger, more savory flavor instead of cinnamony sweet. I also wish the guava tarts had more filling and were softer.
Great food but whoever made the roti on 1/15/26 is not the usual person and did not do a good job. To maintain consistent quality please stick with those who know what they are doing or properly train replacements. If i want subpar roti I will stick to Sybil's in Queens.
I ordered chowmein. Very disappointing. Nothing like the chowmein from liberty. The sorrel drink was totally frozen. He gave me back my money for the sorrel since I returned it. Of course tax wasn't included in the refund. The channa was good . Now you understand the rating.
Pastry is good but food does not taste good. Food on display lacks presentation and looks unappetizing. Prices a little high if making a big purchase. Staff is friendly and respectful.
Casual dining experience. You are not taking someone here for a first date. The place seems to be quite popular, while I was there a constant stream of people kept coming in. I had finger food which exceeded expectations, so unable to comment on the entrees. But reading the expressions of the diners - I would say that it is worth a try. I will be back which is all the compliment needed.
I sometimes go here for the roti which is good. I tried the pepperpot for the first time from here recently and I could not finish it at all. The taste was not pleasing in the slightest.
taste was good, but really not a lot of meat with the goat curry. spices all good, and i expect bones, but was 50 percent huge bones and barely any meat...
I ordered 2 orders of the oxtail dish through GrubHub and it tastes great. But it literally has 2 pieces of oxtail and 2 thumb size in it and the rest is rice and channa. For 30 dollars together just wasn't worth it
The food is good but the service really sucks. Everytime I call to place an order, they take half your order and then put you on hold to tend to the walkins. I think that’s very rude. They put you on hold for a very long until they finish attending to all the walkins. Then they get back on the phone to take the rest of the order. I’m getting sick and tired of them doing that. I feel like giving up on this place. They keep failing me on multiple occasions. 😞😞😞🙁
Tried the oxtail, it was tender enough just too sweet for my likings. I prefer a spicy Jamaican style oxtail. It lacks spice and sodium.
It pains me to write the following somewhat negative review. I've been a fan of Island Express for a while. The food is close to "authentic Guyanese auntie" cooking and is one of the best Caribbean casual restaurants in Brooklyn. However, the recent (shrinkflation) reduction in portion sizes has significantly decreased the value of ordering from this otherwise great establishment. 😔
The chicken roti is definitely not a roti. When I ordered it, I didn't expect to get curry chicken and exactly 3 pieces of potatoes. Not a chick pea in sight. Plus in my mind I am thinking a dhalpuri roti, not some flatbread. Definitely not worth the price. Also the veggie roti same thing, shouldn't there be an option to choose sides like potato, bhagi, pumpkin etc. Instead I get a bowl of cabbage soup mix. Unacceptable. Please do better and do not misrepresent.
not sure if there has been a change in their recipe, but the jamaican beef patties used to be so good but i don’t care for them anymore. this is the 3rd time i’ve visited, got more than one patty and they all have been dry, thin & just not good! bring the good juicy patties back please. also maybe some indication of where the line starts would help. 2 people were served before me while i was standing there waiting for patties.
Food is delicious but was told I need to wear a mask before I can enter, which is understandable. Sadly I wear prescription glasses and the wearing masks fogs my glasses which makes it hard to see. The CDC recommends wearing masks as voluntarily and even the President says he won't wear one, so until then I wont be shopping back here.
This was my first and last time here. I brought the curry chicken roti with spinach.i took three handfuls and was over it the spinach was sweet. That’s not all my stomach just kept hurting until I threw up the roti that was May 4th and my stomach still messed up. Eat with CAUTION!
Do not eat here! My husband and I just got the worse food poisoning from this place.
Very disappointed. After patronizing this business for many years, I called for assistance, as I am in a wheelchair, and the person on the phone was rude. He said they are too busy to help me and come back another time. Then hung up the phone. I called back for a manager and whoever answered said there is no manager to help. I will be sure to share my experience with all my clients and Caribbean associates in the community and music industry. This is a disgrace and a shame that I will never go back
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!! I ordered 1 dozen patties and I only received 1 patty. I called the restaurant and was told her tablet isn't working....???!!?? Then why are you taking orders? The pepper pot taste burnt, just NASTYYYYYYYY! I ordered peas n rice with my order and I got white rice with a little bit of peas n rice. This was my first time ordering from here and definitely my last. NEVAH AGAIN. Take your chances and order from here, just know I warned you.
Can you imagine I just brought 7 orders of garbage. The fried rice is tasteless and the bbq chicken taste and looks like stew chicken. Their cook-up is also tasteless. I don't know who runs the kitchen but this isn't a proper representation of Caribbean food. I'm very disappointed.
I’m unsure when but I think they recently changed their containers to a smaller black plastic ones. I usually order the rice & peas with pepper pot. I guess they also changed the menu because I had to get sides? So I chose the plantain & okra, they barely had plantains, was embarrassing so I told him it’s fine, no plantains & then he put back rice from my bowl back into the pot to make room for the pepper pot, I was so disgusted & annoyed I had to walk out. I’ll try again next time.
The food is way over priced. I bought 6 roti, only to find 3 in my bag when I got home. I would not recommend this place.
I ordered delivery of Jamaican beef pattie in cocoa bread, and received stale, hard butterflap in place of the cocoa bread. When I called to complain, the man who took the call was very rude. He told me that it was a Guyanese restaurant, and that butterfly was the same as Jamaican cocoa bread Not so!!! By the way, I am a Guyanese, but because of his rude attitude, I will never support that restaurant sgain.
The bakery is ok. BUT, this is the first time I've ever had food from a Caribbean restaurant and had to throw it away. Us island people take great pride in our dishes. However, each bite made me want to literally vomit. The pepper pot was disgusting, poorly seasoned. The okra was tough in some spots. The tamarind sauce was rancid. This place is like the school cafeteria version of Caribbean food. What an unfortunate and highly disappointing waste of money, time and taste buds.
Something seemed off about the guys vibe who handled my food because he had a “I don’t care “, type of attitude. I just threw up after eating their food it never happened before . I had food poisoning from them. 👎🏾 Probably selling expired food or he didn’t like me or something.
I was very disappointed! I'm a foodie, and I love me some guyanese baked goods. I went here with my friend and was not impressed with the way I was treated. The first impression of the place was positive but when you are dealt with the staff especially if you are LGBT, you would not get a good experience. This place seem to only cater to good looking women and not people as a whole. The lack of customer service is seen especially in the younger male workers who you can tell have something against thr LGBT community, it's very serious especially being that we live in 2024. Now to actually rate the item I got! It was horrible, it give guyanese bread a bad name. I ordered the butter bread and it was the most stale piece of bread I ever tasted. Please do not think this is how Guyanese bread taste, this place is giving it a bad name. They really need to study their recipes. If you want some good Guyanese Bread, please go to Bakewell, then you can make your opinion on Guyanese Bread. Overall, I was totally disappointed in thr way i was treated and the way the bread was stale. Never giving my business here again. UPDATE: Toasting bread with some butter makes it a little better so my advice is to toast it before eating it.
I was so excited to try this restaurant out given its many positive reviews. Unfortunately my experience was not a positive one and I will breakdown the rationale below: Jerk chicken lunch special - This meal came in a small white container, one that usually holds dumplings to give you a perspective. Nonetheless, if the food was good, I would not have mind the small portion. The jerk chicken was by far the DRIEST jerk chicken I ever had. Not only were all the chicken white meat, which is fine, but it was extremely overcooked and rubbery. The best part of this lunch special was the plantains, which was cooked perfectly, soft and sweet. But unfortunately, the jerk chicken was not delicious at all...=/ Chicken stew with spinach and roti - You would think that a chicken stew would be moist, juicy, or at least tender. However, despite the sauce from the stew, the chicken was still incredibly dry. I was really looking forward to this dish for it sounded so delicious and heartwarming. Unfortunately, that was not my experience at all. Really wanted this first time experience to be amazing... Overall, the best part was probably the delivery person, who was nice and kind. If you do decide to give them a try, please try their other options because I'm sure they have some other more delicious selections! Just try to stay away from these two. Thank you for reading and good luck!
Food was nasty I had oxtails it was tough and rubbery and also they curry goat not done well they need a new cook in the kitchen
This place is a complete joke. I ordered chicken curry, spinach, veggies chow mein, and tamarind from UberEats. The curry had absolutely noooo taste! I requested pepper and nothing came with it. At least if I had some pepper it would have gave the food a likkle flavor. The spinach was full of oil; just drenched. And the tamarind was sour skunt. The chow mein in mek it. I spent $41 for exactly what?! I will be disputing with Uber. Definitely will not be ordering again from this establishment.
Ordered the Oxtail with okra and rice and peas. Now I will start by saying the food is delicious, HOWEVER the the portions you get for $18 dollars are pathetic you get 3 little pieces of oxtail with a little gravy for $18!!!! And the tin “plate” is considered a small plate anywhere else. The man scooped the oxtail one by one as opposed to scooping to plate it. The food was delicious but NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!! Go elsewhere to get your moneys worth. $18 for literally 3 pieces of oxtail in a small tin… thank you, NEXT!! 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼
