The Gate Brooklyn Reviews
My goto neighborhood bar before and after Mission Delores for over 20 years
Good place to catch weeknight primetime NFL. Sound off, but no loud music 👌
Fun bar with outdoor seating. Good beer selection.
This place is a staple of the area. Check out the back garden area for fresh air and a cold one. The only BS you need is Beers and Sunshine.
Great atmosphere and great beer. The garden area is spacious agree comfortable.
One Of my favorite bars in New York City great Owner great beers great vibe
Great bar, and they let you bring your own food. As someone that only eats kosher, it's a major plus!!!
Great bar, never had a problem here.
Great d4aft selection. Bring in some pizza from the pizza place a block away and you are set for a good night.
Great beer selection, bartender professional level dry humor.
Great atmosphere for a pub experience. A dog friendly patio to boot.
Amazing spot to delete some Gansett’s
The Gate is great. Excellent beer selection and even better bartenders.
Classic beer spot with a great outdoor section
Friendly local bar with good selection of tasty beers
great place with an outdoor seating. friendly knowledgeable bartenders!
Amazing service, excellent choice or beer…I love it
One of my locals...great beer selection, friendly bartenders, cozy inside and sun-drenched tables outside.
One of the best bars in the world. I met my wife here 16 years ago.
Probably my favorite beer garden in Brooklyn! They go all out for Pride, St.Patricks Day, and every day is great.
A wonderful bar. Bit of everything and supremely comfy. Beer selection is boss and the staff is fabulous
OG beer bar in Park Slope. Big fixture in the community. Chill vibe. Always has a cool gem or 2. Dart board. Juke box. Outdoor patio.
Exactly what a local bar should be - great music, plenty of seating & a menu that’s extensive but not overhwhelming
Best place to grab a beer in Brooklyn. It's pretty much just that though. Lots of taps. You will find a satisfying brew here.
love this outdoor patio and laidback bar. nothing fancy and that's exactly what i go for. friendly staff too!
Great space, great beer list, and Avi really made our night! Highly recommend for anyone passing by
Neighborhood staple. How could you not love it? Outdoor seating and cheap good drinks. Great place to meet friends and hang out.
Best beer bar in the neighborhood. By a lot. Dark bar, but nice outdoor patio.
Been coming here for 20 years. Always a good time and great beer selection.
Great dive bar where you can have a conversation and hear each other without yelling. Drinks are reasonably priced.
I've been walking by The Gate forever and for some reason I decided tonight was the night to finally stop in. Boy am I glad I did. I was a little intimidated by the beer list but the bartender Avi really helped guide me through it. He helped me find exactly what I was looking for and I really enjoyed chatting with him. I'll definitely be back
I always have a great experience at the Gate, no matter when I go there. The patrons and the staff are very pleasant. Plus they let you bring in food! Great rotating beer selection among other fantastic drinks.
An old reliable for quality beers and good liquor selection. Always an interesting tap list and good selection on bottles and cans. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
Super chill spot. Bartender was friendly and chatty, beer selection was on point and music selection was legendary. I stumbled onto this place and I’m sure glad I did.
Great bar in a wonderful location. Love the outdoor space and cozy inside.
The gate is a great chill spot. outdoor area and allows dogs! also a great beer selection at a decent price. Bring your own food.
Dive atmosphere with outdoor patio & dogs. Also an incredible beer list!! Can’t wait to make this part of regular rotation
A fantastic brew selection. Outstanding beer buyers present a fantastic selection as evidinced by my great time every visit over a 10+ year span.
Great outdoor seating area. Great selection! Also nice music inside. Wish they allowed dogs again.
Awesome draft selection & great outdoor seating
Another awesome dog friendly bar in Park Slope. The patio is expansive and great on a nice day, and is totally packed with dogs typically. Very good, diverse beer list with a range of styles and rare brews. They even have darts and a weird goblin statue thing, so what's not to love?
Great low-frills place in Park Slope for a chill drink! Good outdoor patio for those sunny covid days. Unlike other establishments, they won't force you to order an entree and will provide a snack for you if you get a drink (thanks for the sandwich!!).
A good beer selection with reasonable prices, and a chill outdoor space. We came in after kitchen was closed so I can't speak for the food, but we got a few pizza slices from a nearby spot to take back to the outdoor garden area. Also has a few board game options.
Great bar. Theres a lot to it. Really friendly crowd and staff. They have a side patio with lots of seating. They have a bunch of board games and cards free to play. They have a ton of beer and liquor. They have big buck hunter and pacman. They have darts and plenty of seating. Perfect!
I mean, the beer assortment is great; but we all go for Avi. Seriously though, The Gate is a neighborhood must if you're a beer drinker. This place never disappoints!
Best place for an afternoon drink! Especially when warm enough for the patio. No food but they never mind you bringing snacks or having food delivered.
Classic old school bar with a great tap list, knowledgeable staff and lovely backyard for nicer days. Always good music playing, and as of recently they take credit cards again too!
Nestled in this beautiful neighborhood, this bar is a true gem. The atmosphere is immediately captivating, with a portrait of Edgar Allan Poe setting the stage for a cozy and eclectic experience. Every corner seems to tell a story, leading you from the intimate indoor seating to a fantastic 'patio' that's perfect for a relaxed evening or hot late afternoon. The variety of beers on tap is great, offering local craft brews to international favorites. What truly elevates this place, however, is the barman. Knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely passionate, he makes you feel right at home. It's a place where you can lose track of time ;)
always a great vibe. Best Beer selection in Brooklyn (possibly the city, but who needs to leave Brooklyn?). Bartenders are first class. I have yet to have a less than stellar time here.
Nice to sitting outside. Inside environment looks pretty cool as well. A lot of craft beers options.
I don't know why it took me so long to write this review. I came in during brooklyn pride and there were two big boys behind the bar (love it). One of them was showing a bunch of chest hair (rawr). The place was absolutely packed and those two really held it down. I've been back a few times since and it has never disappointed.
The Gate is one of the few consummate drinker's bars in Park Slope. Great beer selection. Healthy pours. Dog friendly. Outside food allowed. Awesome patio and plenty of space inside.
Great beer bar. Big selection of draft beers and decent enough hard liquor selection. Outdoor seating when available, cool bartenders and a nice wood interior. No food, just drinks, so leave your kids at home. Overall a great place to hang out on a summer afternoon and down a pint or three, or watch a weekend evening turn into late night.
Good relaxed bar that allows dogs and has great outdoor seating.
Awesome outdoor space and plenty of taps to find something you'll like.
It's a pleasant atmosphere with an outside patio, music and Cocktails
Great local bar. No food, but lots of places nearby to grab something to go and get a beer at the bar. Good neighborhood hang
Very nice bar to go and chill at after dinner. Super nice bartender
Nice, cozy place. Great beer and wine. However, no table service and only cash accepted.
Nice outdoor area, beer list is pretty good, and there's always a real standout beer there, usually a vintage.
Cozy bar with great outdoor space (smoking allowed). Knowledgeable staff ready to help choose a great beer or cocktail
Grab a pint and a table outside. Then ask for the takeout menus and order up some grub! Fido has to stay on his leash while he begs for scraps!
Really nice outside if you can get a table. Also have a great assortment of beers
I like The Gate...if I can find a seat, that is. You must come early and if you're allergic to dogs, or just don't like dogs, this isn't the place for you. Now, I love dogs AND beer, so this is a go-to place of mine on a cool night. Lots of awesome beers on tap.
Good assortment of beer. We sat outside but had to go inside and get our own beers? Not sure why they weren't brought out to us but otherwise staff was friendly and very was good.
Down to earth bar with a solid rotating menu of craft beers on tap. Large outdoor space where you can bring food (they don't sell any) and enjoy a drink. Look out for events like brewery takeovers and their annual brewmaster chili cook-off!
This was where we had informal staff meetings when the new boss started at our company and wanted us to like her. nice regular bar with a patio right on the street so you can pretend you are an animal in a zoo. One suggestion I would have is to install a peanut machine on the outside of the patio so pedestrians can pay a quarter for a handful of peanuts to feed to the drinkers on the other side of the fence. that would really set this bar apart imo.
Great dive bar that's not TOO divey. Beer selection is crafty and delicious. The outdoor patio is nice, plants are a cool touch
Great local bar with awesome selections of beer and liquor. Friendly staff who know their trade. Good for a chilled evening that's laid back.
A great bar. Not overly crowded. Bar tender was friendly and quick to help us. Very nice outside seating.
Longstanding local Park Slope bar with interesting craft beer selections. Spacious outdoor patio.
Our first visit to this bar. The atmosphere was everything you look for in a neighborhood pub. The bar staff was friendly and welcoming. The beer selections offered were excellent. Definitely looking forward to our next visit.
The Gate has an awesome outdoor space (get there early, it fills up!), is dog friendly and has a great atmosphere. Very laid back, and the bartenders are super nice. Plus, there's a great selection of beer on tap.
Low key and grown up bar with great craft beer (and the usual other libations) classic rock playlist and a pro-dog policy. You are welcome to bring outside food. When its nice, the outside space is spacious and comfortable.
Nice beer selection, maybe more than fifteen beers on tap. They have a nice patio, great for summer nights. It's pretty packed on weekends though. Dog friendly.
They used to have a dart board where my friends & I used to play darts while drinking, but unfortunately they renovated, although the place has more seating now. And the place still has that classic bar atmosphere that you expect.
I've been going here for years and I keep going back and forth over whether it not I like the place. I love it when it's not that busy. They have a large outside area, so when the weather is nice they are flooded with people and dogs. The staff is always friendly and the service good. Lately they have started carrying cider which is great since I don't like beer. Be aware that even though they allow parents to bring children, they do NOT allow strollers inside the bar or in the outside seating area. If you are going to bring your kids leave the stroller at home.
Decent neighborhood bar with a large outdoor patio. Nothing terrible about this place but nothing unique or stellar, either.
Want to get drunk on the cheap? Cleanliness not a concern? The Gate is for you. I'm not saying this in a bad way, but just know what you're getting in to before you go.
Thin selection post covid. Hopefully the full menu appears later. Was a place of many l choices and general quality in the past. May those days return.
Nothing too special. Decent beer list, an outdoor patio area.
Bar on 5th Avenue with low key vibe. Nice selection of draft beers. Has plenty of seating both inside and put. Has a slight dive bar feel but overall a warm place.
Outdoor patio & worn wood bar are the highlights. The beer selection is alright with a few local choices thrown in, prices are pretty good for the neighborhood. The place can get packed and start to smell a bit.
Strollers are not allowed on the deck. I'm pretty sure that's discrimination. I'll never come back even without the stroller
02/17/2023 about 9pm, not rowdy just came from dinner drinking tea.. Some sort of Guinness promo going on, we’re sold a Guinness and told about the printer. We’re unaware there was a Guinness rep who was MIA that was handling the printing. Friend tells my partner to go print something on his Guinness, she’s goes to machine which was straightforward and begins printing. Angry beanie/goatee white male bartender and/or barback sees and starts yelling and cursing that she shouldn’t touch things that are not hers. This dude was straight up rude, aggressive and should re-evaluate how he speaks to his patrons or anyone really. Maybe we missed the don’t touch sign but this wasn’t fully explained, the machine was out in the open at a table.. Edit 2/28 re: owner response: I appreciate the response but it completely skirts around the issue. The issue is how inappropriate it was for a grown man to be yelling and cursing in my partners face. There’s a right way to handle the situation (“Im sorry it wasn’t clear but the Guinness rep is handling the printing, standby we’ll get them over here”) and clearly the staff chose the wrong and combative way to handle. Put a sign up next time.
Absolute trash bar. Went to smoke a cig in the patio like every other bar in Brooklyn and the skinhead looking bartender yells at me. So I take my cig and beer to the sidewalk like every other bar in Brooklyn and this skinhead looking bartender yells at me. What’s his deal? No clue. Would I recommend this bar to others? No way!
Came here after a nearby work event, and experienced deplorable service — cannot begin to convey the degree of upset as a result of one of the bartenders poor behaviour. Literally left the bar in tears. Bartender clearly hates his job and created such a miserable atmosphere. Don’t get into a line of front-facing hospitality if you’re not interested or equipped to handle basic human interaction.
I’ve gone to the Gate for many years (since it opened) but had an unfortunate experience and won’t be going back. My partner got us a couple of beers and my mistake, I ordered a saison on the extreme end of that style (think beer-flavored kombucha). I couldn’t drink it. I asked if I could swap for something else. I was dumbfounded that this courtesy could not be extended. So I’ll take my business where bartenders are smart enough to know that one pint would have kept me coming back in the future.
We googled "dog friendly bars" and brought our dog here based on the results. We walked in and the bartender immediately told us that dogs are only allowed in the outdoor terrace area. Ok, fine, we'll follow the rules. Then another dog came in, and no problem with that dog being inside the bar. We felt that we were singled out and discriminated against because we have a larger dog. If you have a policy, define it and follow it. This uneven and discriminatory enforcement is extremely unfair and left a very sour taste in our mouths. The bartender told us that no dogs were allowed in, then blatantly contradicted that in front of us. Safe to say we'll never return, and we'll tell everyone we know not to go either. And we urge you, reader of this Google review, not to patronize this bar either.
I didn't have the opportunity to cross the gate. I arrived with my wife and little baby, a couple of friends and their baby. As we were with strollers, the bartender immediately told us to leave the strollers out. It was a terrible experience and I just can guess they are not comfortable with families going there as it's better for them to only receive adults in their restaurant.
