Great dive bar. There’s the concert ‘hall’ and the small bar. When we went at 8:30pm on a Saturday night, a country artist was playing - it was $25 to get in, but you could have gone in the bar area for free.

We camped near the tavern and were thrilled to see they had live music on Saturday afternoons. The inside seemed small. Dollar bills stapled to the walls and ceiling. We followed others to a door (covered by dollars so it was difficult to see) into a large dancehall room! Chairs on the front sides of the stage are old movie theater seats. So comfy! The musicians put on a great show. People were dancing and cheering and singing along. Who would have thought it was afternoon. The drinks were good, not cheap, but the place is a work in progress. Musicians do all the upkeep and updating and they are working on a shoestring. We didn't eat there but they do have a food truck on Saturdays. Bathroom is small and odd, but it gets the job done. People were all friendly and having a great time. Support this place if you are in the neighborhood--or go for a drive and visit anyway!

They don't have food per se, there are food trucks at times. They also have live music on weekends. You can feel the the vibes of many years of people engaging in friendship and camaraderie that definitely creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.

No food there unless it has an event and a food truck. It is an old Honky tonk with lots of character and history. Fun dance hall with lots of friendly people. We listened to a good band.

We love Devil’s Backbone Tavern! Just a chill dive bar with great staff, cheap drinks, shuffleboard and one of the best sounding music rooms in the Hill Country. Ben Foster runs the Songwriter’s Night on Mondays and host great artists from near and far. If you’re looking for a classic Texas experience stop on by and say hi.

Great bit of Texas history on our way home. If you are in the area I would recommend stopping in for a beer or two. Great jukebox🎶

A Saturday afternoon ride in the Texas Hill Country along a road known as The Devil’s Backbone because of its winding roads. It is popular among motorcycle riders along with its iconic dive bar and tavern. We made the trip with a stop at the tavern that often features live concerts and music.

One of the best places to see live music in our corner of the world. You can feel the history when you're there, and there's a lived in quality to the place (understandable after almost 100 yrs in existence) that deepens & elevates the artists' sound when they're there. If you love & value live performance, treat yourself to a show here. You won't be disappointed.

Great dive bar. Nice space for live music. It's very rustic, and worn. But has a lot of feel to it. Expect to find bikers.

Today Sunday the Tex Maniacs put a phenomenal show on and amazing tribute to the conjunto legend Flaco Jimenez. Amazing crowd and venue was perfect.

My favorite bar, no doubt. This was the first tavern I ever went to, and it quickly became my go-to spot. The drinks are amazing, the atmosphere is just right to relax and unwind. Every now and then, I sneak away for a quick drink here before heading home. It always makes me feel good. I absolutely love this place! 😎

Took a ride on back roads from Bandera to Devils Backbone Tavern. Heard about this place in an article on dive bars worth visiting. It is a very cool place with a nice outdoor area and a huge dance hall. This place and the staff were very much worth the ride to get here. I hope we get the chance to visit one more time before we go back home.

A throwback to yesteryear, the Devil’s Backbone Tavern is one of the last true Texas Hill Country Ice Houses left in existence. Stop in on a hot summer day for one of the coldest beers west of IH-35. Not only are the beers super cooled, they have a full-bar and an attached dance hall. They seem to have live music most weekends, and look for special events. They also have a grill shack out back with great burgers for ten bucks. I recently went here while they had a small flea market in progress with vintage clothes, jewelry and someone selling old tools and kitchen gadgets. I always have an interesting time at the Devil’s Backbone, you will too.

Been coming here since 1980. Always friendly locals and bartenders. Live music in the dancehall sometimes and even karaoke! Great jukebox too. Outside seating also. There's a rock in e fireplace mantel that looks like the Devil's face 😈 and the ceiling is shaped like a coffin. Don't be scared! 😉 Beer is ice cold too y'all. Took my 90 yr old Dad for his first time. He said the Coke was cold too! If you ever drive down hwy 32 and pass it, turn around and go check it out.

What a hidden treasure! Advertise is the oldest dive bar in Texas and I have to say if this is not it then it's exactly what I would envision as being so. Quaint little interior with a large dance floor and adjacent dancehall. The dance hall is very rustic and well kept at the same time. Perfectly conditioned and original construction from what I would guess to be the 1920s. Everyone is cheerful and divide is perfect on any weekday and Saturday night. Bottled beer only and it's usually about $5 a beer. The back patio is not visible from highway 32 on the front so it creates a nice private little Oak Grove picnic table sitting area. Plenty of parking and I think this spot will continue to be a thriving dive bar as San Marcos and Canyon Lake continue to grow and become more popular to folks from other areas of the country. The view of the Blanco river valley is absolutely breathtaking across the highway as you're pulling in. This is a hidden gem and one that you should definitely visit with your friends or family!

Classic Texas Dive Bar in the middle of the wonderful Texas Hill Country. Decent bar drinks and big name music entertainment. It's what you imagine a classic dive bar to be...completely unpretentious and comfy like an old pair of boots.

5 stars for the tavern/venue. 1 star for the seating/general admission. Who ever came up with that should be flogged. We were so excited to see one of our favorites, American Aquarium, at Devil's backbone. Hadn't been there since the late 90s and this was a big deal for us. We bought front row table seats for 150.00 and couldn't wait to see and hear our beloved BJ Barham. From the photos you can see what we thought we purchased and our views of the stage. General admission was standing in front of us the entire time and management could care less. The ticket chart shows general admin in the back. AA never disappoints so we "listened" to a great show. Beware when buying tickets and what you think you're going to see is not the same.

don't believe the hype... while they do have live music in this tiny space with cramped seating, the loud and not necessary speakers at every show make it a torturous night of entertainment. Overpriced seats at filthy tables, and a staff of not helpful or friendly people - always ready to address the regular 70 something yr old hippies - will take your money for an overpriced beer. Seriously not sure why people think this dive bar is anything but. Go head over to the outdoor space up the road towards the 32 / 12 Junction. Even worse than the first time I visited this divebar 15 years ago... I give up.

Buyer beware when purchasing tickets for a show at Devils Backbone. The ticket rep they use is very scammy: they’ll sell you tickets then tell you that the sale was invalid. I do not recommend this place at all.
