Hungry Hollow Cafe Carmichael Reviews
Quiet little diner that serves the standard fair. The staff that work here are very friendly. They will remember your name and what you like to eat. Owner operated and been in in the community well over forty years. Delicious Patty melts , chicken fried steak breakfast. All their breakfasts are delicious that I have had. And my husband's personal favorite is a grilled turkey sandwich called the bird very tasty. They have sweet potato fries as an option. They aren't on the menu, but if you ask for them, trust me, they are worth it. We like to go here quite often. Reasonably priced for good homemade food.
Its like walking in to Grandma's house for breakfast or lunch. Always decorated in the closest holiday, they treat you like family and their coffee is great. Prices and portions are spot on.
Love this local haunt. Great to see folks from the neighborhood in here.
We came here on Saturday. I was really happy we came here to try a new restaurant. It is a little small but the customer service and food was amazing! They did have to make a bigger table for us because we are a family of 6. I did notice a cute little older couple kept smiling at us and waving hi to our little baby who is 1 years old. At the end of our meal the waitress stated a customer paid for our entire meal!! I was shocked and very grateful!! I believe it was the older couple and if it was and you’re reading this. We want to thank you so much for paying for our meal!! That was so nice of you! Many blessings to you!
I like the breakfast, hunger hollow breakfast plate. The sliced breakfast potatoes are the best I have anywhere. The staff works very well together, like a fine-tuned machine. I feel welcome there and I enjoy seeing the other customers interact with family like they are at their kitchen table. I am from Golden Colorado and I don't usually go out much. When I find a place that I like I go back. I have been here in Sacramento / Carmichael for a couple of weeks and I have been there three times and want to add a few more visits to the omelet that have the three eggs and sliced potatoes a large glass of apple juice and a glass of ice.
It's been a while; stopped by there this past Friday, Dec. 27 Jody and the rest of the fine folks provided great food and no-nonsense service. Great to dine at an "old-school" family diner, with no loud piped-in music and big-screen TV's. Happy New Year to all.
The food was very good and reasonably priced.
It is like eating at your family's house. Warm and inviting. Very friendly staff.
Chicken fried steak and gravy was great!
Love this place. Staff are great. One of the last places you can get good breakfast food at a fair price.
Update... Came to eat on 12/4/19 Came here this morning...after leaving crickets kitchen... I was greeted at the door...the waitress always checked on me and was wonderful. The food was amazing...i ordered the 2 egg...potaylto and longuica breakfast. The hashbrowns cooked perfectly...so was the muffin and sausage... The staff was friendly... I would for sure come back.. ........................................................ I came here for breakfast per the reviews. When we walked in the place was packed. We were asked our drink order pretty fast. The waitresses were friendly...but never asked us if we liked our food nor thanked us for even coming in. I got the 2 eggs...hashbrowns...linguica...breakfast. My friend got the 2 pancake breakfast... He thought the bacon was overcooked..but it's exactly how I love it. The hashbrowns and linguica was just ok...no explosion in my mouth...or like I just want to come back because the food was amazing.. I thought the food was bland.. The food for sure needed seasoning. Maybe it's because a lot of elderly people eat here...or maybe because when I cook...I add a lot of flavor. Not sure I will be back. I like other places better. But it was nice to try it out.
Our family always enjoys this neighborhood nugget. They have a robust, classic breakfast menu that includes a Monte Cristo. I prefer the Joe's Scramble, over medium instead of scrambled. The service is fast and efficient. Sometimes you get the feeling that Flo, Vera, and Alice are there serving you. We love the Hungry Hollow!
This little tiny hole in the wall Cafe is like a hidden treasure. Nothing fancy just good food, excellent prices, excellent service. Real good servers that care about you and dining experience
Such a warm feeling walking in here … Genuinely nice, good people great service great food
Love this place. I go here for the grilled cheese with french fries, but the other items on the menu are great too. The servers are all really friendly, and always have a smile when you walk in. I highly recommend this place. Great for family dining too.
First time here, extremely satisfied. Great customer service, friendly atmosphere and kind people.
The food was excellent. Better than I Hop . Just a small restaurant open 7am - 245 pm
Came in on Super Bowl Sunday with the only about 45 minutes before closing and they let us in. We got classic French toast, bacon, sausage, egg, coffee, orange juice and can’t forget the hash brown came out really quick and piping hot. We felt rushed but very friendly service And the food was phenomenal. Will be back definitely a touchdown!
Great place to come eat super low prices fresh quality food gravy is good. Definitely coming back here. You know it’s a good place. When you see all the white hairs in there you know they’ve been eating for years. They know what they’re doing. Come check this place out been around for 50 years. Definitely won’t disappoint and your tummy will be happy.
This was my first time at the HUNGRY HALLOW, and it will not be my last. I enjoyed a Sunrise Omelet with perfectly cooked hash browns and an English muffin with my neighbor. Our waitress was Debbie. She was cheery and attentive. No coffee cup went empty. If you are in Carmichael, California take some time to enjoy breakfast or lunch, they are not open for dinner. I think you will find the service and atmosphere as welcoming as I have.
We've been going to Hungry Hollow for almost a decade now, and every single time it's just been pleasant. Service and the staff always welcome you warmly and the food is delicious 😋
Over 50 years of putting out amazing food and fast service
Always a great experience at Hungry Hollow. My dad loves it here because it reminds him of the restaurant that my mom owned in the 80s in Belleville, Illinois. That one was called Grandma Dot's. Consistently tasty food, great portions, and the service is always excellent. Hungry Hollow is decorated for each season by someone enthusiastic, and it is cheery!
Tucked away in a sea of asphalt, is this cozy spot where 'everyone knows your name'. Their friendly, attentive staff serves delicious food at great prices. This delightful "hole in the wall cafe" is open for breakfast and lunch, and you will not be disappointed by either. Give it a try today...
One of our favorite breakfast spots around. Friendly staff with plenty of good food. Restrooms are always clean. Food is very consistent every time we come in. Coffee is a light roast and always good. Price for what you get is fair and well under an average breakfast at other restaurants. Highly recommend
Update 06/0625 Hadn't been here in a long time and it's just as great as it was last time. The lovely ladies are still there to greet you with a beautiful smile and there's more help now! Everyone makes you feel like you're family. Just can't say enough, they're all wonderful! I had the 2'egg breakfast with country potatoes and chicken fried steak and sourdough toast and it was delicious. Well done and thank you Hungry Hollow! I'll be back! I had been there before a few years ago. This visit was a true pleasure. The staff is very friendly and I received a warm and welcoming greeting and was told I could be seated anywhere I wanted. Coffee and water came quickly and ordered scrambled eggs with chicken fried steak and 2 pancakes. Food was just the right amount and so tasty! I took the pancakes to go. Their prices are very reasonable and the quality is excellent. I will be back for sure. Thank you Hungry Hollow! Great job!
Good old Jasper Crickinsticker came down off Bushybox Ridge to have breakfast with me, and said we should meet up at the Hungry Hollow! Then he goes on and on about how he stops there each and every time he comes down off the mountain... sometimes 3 times a year! The breakfast was Amazing too say the least. ☆☆☆☆☆
I thoroughly enjoyed my hamburger at Hungry Hollow. I can say without hesitation that this hidden treasure of a restaurant serves the best, most perfectly cooked french fries in comparison to any other place I've ordered fries at. I don't like fries that are even slightly soggy or oily. My Hungry Hollow fries were plentiful and served with just the right amount of crispness. It's 8:00 AM as I'm writing this and I could eat some Hungry Hollow fries for breakfast!

We had an early Sunday flight and a friend recommended the Hungry Hollow for breakfast. Kind service, wonderful food. We loved it.
We had breakfast here today 10/8/25. The service here was excellent. The waitress came back to us to fill out coffee and asked us if we needed anything else. We had scrambled eggs, hash browns, and sourdough toast I had linquica and my wife had bacon with breakfast. My wife likes her bacon extra crispy and she said it was cooked perfect. We will definitely be returning again to Hungry Hollow.
A humble hole in the wall for that good brunch fixing you miss. Bring some friends and enjoy. Happy easter!! Keep up the good work guys!
A truly wonderful place to have a meal! The food is delicious, the staff are amazingly warm and helpful (the waitresses and the bus boys), and the atmosphere is delightful. I only just recently discovered Hungry Hollow and it is already my favorite place to eat.
Good food, and a lovely, friendly staff. Obviously a ton of regulars, good sign that they are consistent. I had the Monte Cristo and sweet potato fries, both were yummy. Breakfast served all day!

Love this place. Staff are great. One of the last places you can get good breakfast food at a fair price.

Great little cafe hidden away in a slow shopping center. The place is a little dated but the food and the service is great, so who cares. I was in a very indecisive mood so I went with the patty melt and was very surprised. Worth a try
Very simple place to eat a good breakfast. The price wasn't bad either. I paid about 20 bucks for a breakfast sandwich with fruit and a scramble with potatoes. The plates are super simple, but it's nice to have an old fashioned breakfast meal from time to time. I enjoyed the food and will come back when we are in town.
This is a favorite stop when I'm in the area. Basic café type menu. Reasonable prices. Steady stream of regulars dropping in. Go location for me. Plenty of free parking. Kid friendly. ADA friendly.
A very strong 4 star restaurant. Environment is pleasant and service was great. Servers were nice and checked up on us often. I ordered the Country Fried Chicken and it was delicious! The gravy they use is one of the best! It was the perfect blend of flavors. My over easy eggs were cooked exactly how I like them. The country potatoes were a little burnt and small cut but still good. Overall, I had a fantastic breakfast here and would definitely come back. I highly recommend it.
I accidentally found this small lunch+all-day breakfast place. It is so typical American place with elderly couple sitting all around :) it’s a real vibe from 80’s movies. They even use old-fashioned checks. The price is really low and food was delicious. But coffee is not the best, honestly :) it’s not my first place with good food and bad coffee 😅
Great breakfast options with family friendly pricing. Great service and easy parking.
I like the vibe for sure. It’s cozy and down to earth and all of the staffs are super nice and attentive. It’s one of those restaurants that makes you feel like home. The food on the other hand might not be the best. Half of the food we got tasted like very well prepared (by the chef at the restaurant) supermarket frozen food, the other half tasted freshly made on spot by one of us’ grandma (which could be a feature to some people). Coffee was pretty diluted but yeah you get as much refills as you like. Of course that might be the reason why they’re able to sustain the business with such affordable prices. If your goal is just to chill and comfort your soul at a homy place without a big budget, this place is for you. If you’re picky with your food however, you might wanna try somewhere else.

Would have given food 5stars because it was delicious except part way into my Monte Cristo I found a hair that had been cooked into it. Service also would have been given 5stars as well, except the server had very little time/attention for us. Although obviously a long-time professional, her questions were short & quick & then she was gone. Hard to get her attention and had to ask someone else for togo box twice as our server was busy being extremely attentive to a family that were surely long-time customers. I've served in family dining, fine dining & catering for 30yrs, maybe I'm too critical. I made sure to always make each customer feel they were as special to me as the table next to them, even if they weren't "regulars". The difference in the way she treated the two tables was stark. No one is perfect & I don't expect perfect therefore I don't give a lot of 5stars on surveys. Reviews I will give 5stars. I wanted to give Hungry Hollow 5stars because the food was friggin phenomenal until I found the hair cooked into the egg battered bread part. So if you've read this far, Go give them a chance , seriously Go! They were probably having an "off" type of day.

The food was not good. I got biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were like rocks and so dry. The gravy had a weird taste. My husband got 2 eggs with ham and potatoes. The potatoes did not taste good, like they were old and way over seasoned. The bathroom was so disgusting. That should have been my clue to not eat here. The staff was very nice but the food is just not good.
Hungry hollow is a dive of a cafe, microwaved food. The servers are rude and inattentive. Run cards multiple times. Food despite being microwaved is overcooked. Can't take criticism when they have done poor job. Do not eat here unless you want food poisoning. The son who does the cooking doesn't know how to work past a microwave, has no concept of taste as all food is bland. Just a disappointing and rude establishment.
Service was terrible,do not go to eat here they hardly have any business there, because the waiter lady is very lazy ,and cool refuses to make food correctly,I went there and ordered a scrambler they brought me cold omelette with cold cheese,on it and when I asked if they could melt cheese, they said there's no way the cook will do it ,then when I was leaving the cook finally said ok they'll melt it will a attitude, this is terrible customer service and places like this should learn how to cook and be more courteous to customers, be careful eating at places like this!
It was a horrible experience. The staff and owner were laughing at a customer because they had different views than another customer. I will never go there again. I hope they don’t talk about all their customers
The rags they used to wipe the cutting areas left a seriously moldy dirty sock smell on the food. First the Omelette stank so bad I had to send it back then the 2nd one sent out was a little better but not much I can tell it was the vegetables. I had (tried to have) the veggie Omelette but there was just no way. Bad mobility means lately I have had to go out to eat for breakfast primarily and my budget just for that meal is $600.00 per month and it was primarily theirs but this was/is so bad I will not return. How can I? Cleanliness and proper care is so important for myself at this trying time I cant afford to pay for meals that are inedible due to cook area cleanliness issues. Oh well.
