Rasa Malaysia is highly praised for its authentic Malaysian cuisine and friendly, attentive service. Customers rave about the Nasi Lemak, Tom Yum soup, and beef dishes. The staff is accommodating, ensuring orders meet dietary needs.
Tip: If you're looking for authentic Malaysian food in the Raleigh-Durham area, Rasa Malaysia is the place to go.
The dining experience was truly amazing. Customer service was very attentive and gave great food recommendations. The food was so good that we both left super satisfied. We shared two great dishes: Penang Char Kway Teow and Sambal Olek Fish.
If you have been visiting malaysia and you missed the food, here is the right place for you'll to be. From chaar kway teow, roti canai, nasi lemak or tom yam. Once you walk in you will see how beautiful the decorations like in negeri bersejarah melaka.
The food was excellent along with the service. We've been trying to find an Authentic Malaysian restaurant and I think we found it here! We had the Tom Yum soup, Basil and Beef, and one of their specials of Beef in a black bean sauce. Everything was delicious and the portions are plenty enough for leftovers.
Best malaysian food in oversea. The food here even tastier than the food in Malaysia… very happy to dine in Rasa Malaysia. Great to meet Winnie, a lovely lady. Thank you Winnie. 🌷🌷🌷❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Queenie, Penang.
Really nice atmosphere, serving authentic Malaysian food and other classic asian favorites. Serving sizes are generous. We’ve visited many times and always leave satisfied.
Delicious! Among the best. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Manager visited us and ensured our order was modified to meet dietary restrictions. The chicken satay and chicken lettuce wraps were perhaps the best of their kind we have ever had - which is many. The drunken noodles were fresh and balanced.
Update from CNY Dinner Feb 1 Amazing food and lion dance with pictures and videos If you’re looking for authentic Malaysian food in the Raleigh-Durham area, Rasa Malaysia is the place to be! I had the pleasure of visiting with a Malaysian friend who guided me through the menu, and it was an absolute treat. Every dish we tried was bursting with flavor and perfectly executed. The spice level is moderate, making it enjoyable for a wide range of palates. The dishes were served promptly, and the quality of the food truly stood out. Rasa Malaysia offers an incredible dining experience that highlights the vibrant flavors of Malaysian cuisine. Highly recommended for food enthusiasts who want to explore something unique in the Triangle area!
I stumbled upon Rasa Malaysia today, as I had never been in Southern Village and just wanted to check it out while my daughter was at a movie. I am glad I did! I ordered the Tom Yum Soup, and it was great! It had lots of flavor and had a good amount of seafood, mushrooms, and peppers! My server was great and warned that it is spicy, but the spice wasn’t too much and it was perfectly fine for me. For my main entree I got the drunken noodles and added scallops. It was very good as well. The portion was great, and I had some left over to share with my daughter after her movie. She really liked it. I also ordered a Thai Tea to go, and my daughter said it was really good. All in all, the food was great and I can’t wait to go back. I was also impressed with the service. I went in at 11:00 am, when they opened, so there were only a few tables, but both my server and the other server were very nice! BONUS: They said they can work around my wife’s crustacean allergy in the future. Which is great. Sometimes it can be hard to find good Asian food where she doesn’t have to worry about cross contamination. And they have a nice outdoor patio, so we can potentially dine in and sit there (it’s hard for my wife to sit in restaurants that cook a lot of shrimp or crustaceans).
Our server totally set the tone that we were in for an excellent experience. From the appetizer to the main dish, our taste buds danced for joy. Malay food was very authentic. We had each type of meat and all were perfect. The drinks were all perfectly matched to the food type. I completely recommend this place to all folks that want darn good food!
This was a very nice dinner experience and loved tasting the delicious Malaysian food. Recommend the roti canai with curry ayam, beef rendang, sambal oeleck fish, and sago pudding. The flavors of the curry were impeccable. Casual yet nice ambience of the restaurant.
I came here with a party of 6 on a Monday night. We made reservations but there were no crowds at all. Our table was in the front by the windows and main front door. There's a sign on the front door telling patrons not to use the door and to use the side entrance from another lobby. But patrons still used the door, and there was a wind tunnel since we were seated right up front. A bit annoying, but it wasn't too cold that night. People at our table had the sampler appetizer, fried rice, drunken noodles, lemon chicken, and sweet and sour chicken. Everyone was very pleased with their meals. The sweet and sour chicken (photo) was the absolute best I have ever had. The sweet peppers and pineapple were perfect, and I am already looking forward to getting it again. The building and decor was a bit tired but it was clean. There's parking all along the little service road, but I can see it filling up fast on weekends, but we found a spot right our front.
Malaysian restaurant in Southern Village, Chapel Hill. Came here with a group. We ordered a bunch of different food from the lunch menu. The roti canai was so soft and buttery. The curry was also great. I also enjoyed the nasi lemak and the laksa was quite good. The spicy level was very mild, so if you like spicy, make sure to ask the server to make it extra spicy.
Authentic Malaysian food! This place is absolutely amazing from the food to the people. So friendly and inviting, the decor is very nice and tactfully decorated. I got the nasi lemak and the taste was absolutely incredible, super authentic. It's hard to find food like this outside southeast Asia. Super authentic sambal, don't let the anchovies scare you. The taste is full of Umami, no fishiness, just garlicly, hints of sweet, and full of salty Umami goodness that pairs perfectly with the rice. This is a famous dish in Malaysia for a reason. If they do this dish right, you can trust that their other dishes will be authentic and amazing as well. I 100% recommend coming here if you're in the area.
We have been long time patrons of Rasa - and even the erstwhile Merlion... We love it especially during Chinese new year. Authentic Malaysian and Chinese food in a pleasant ambience. And we love the sake selection. Overall, it's a great addition to the chapel hill food scene. Plus The owners Winnie and Simon are salt of the earth people who work hard to maintain the best quality.
We are here again. Good food and wonderful service! I had laska udon noodle soup with shrimp. It was very tasty. For shrimp in the soup, they only charged extra for $0.30, but gave me a tons of shrimp. Very good value! Sanitation grade is a 100, that is a big plus. Will be back for sure.
2022 update. They kept us fed during COVID-19. We are forever thankful for their resourcefulness. This week was our first time dining in after that craziness instead of doing takeout. Food still delicious and staff still kind. Enjoyed celebrating Lunar New Year here. Food and entertainment was wonderful. Great atmosphere. Great location in Southern Village.
Came here late on a thursday night with friends and someone was playing their piano, but the restaurant was not busy at all. The ambiance was lovely! Their noodle soup portions are large- I ordered the char siu mee soup; had lots of roast pork, two steamed dumplings and crisp greens. It was exactly what I needed that day 🙇♀️🙇♀️ Though I’ve never tried, the laska is well loved among my friends.
The food here is really delicious and I liked the low key vibe of the restaurant. I enjoyed the curry and roti, as well as the noodle dish. Their dishes are super flavorful. The service was also great! I also appreciated that they weren't playing music, so I was able to enjoy my food in peace. Highly recommend.
The food is always delicious and the wait staff are always willing to provide recommendations for some of the most amazing food. Definitely try the Thai Iced Tea. It is delicious!
The absolute BEST Thai food you will ever eat! Simon, the owner takes so much care in every aspect of his family restaurant. They select the freshest ingredients and everything is made from scratch. The restaurant is immaculately clean and the customer service is top notch! You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu...EVERYTHING is amazing...we have been going here for years and my kids love it here. If you want to support an amazing, local, non- chain restaurant dine at Rasa Malaysia. You won’t regret it!
Yes, they may be a bit pricey, but that's fine for the quality of service and the outstanding food choices. Especially since they can so adeptly hand extreme food allergies as well as vegan and vegetarian. (I have or am none of these, but my wife suffers badly from food related allergies and conditions. She has had no problems after eating here several times.). The menu and environment are authentic. So many good options to try. Ask for advice, take a risk. Nothing will hurt you.
The food is really tasty and decent size portions. So much food that you’ll have takeaway. The staff are outstanding and very welcoming. Some evenings on tbr weekend may be very busy so just be patient and don’t come too hungry. The food is worth the wait. Very authentic and fresh.
5 stars for the food, and 6 stars if I could for the service. I walked in a few minutes after they closed (unknowingly), but they were still more than happy to place a take out order for me. We had a number of people in our party had food allergy’s and dietary restrictions, and the staff was incredibly helpful letting us know which menu items were ok for us to get. The food was very good, and portion sizes were satisfying. Would gladly come here again.
Just went here for my daughter’s birthday dinner. They just know how to make delicious food. Plus the service is outstanding. As a longtime triangle resident, I can vouch for how difficult it is to find a unique Asian dining experience, let along a pro-level prepared meal. Rasa is serving exceptional, memorable dishes. I need to come here more often.
This restaurant provided one of the best meals I've had in months. I had never had Malaysian prior to this experience and I can assure you I will return. It is a combination of Indian and Vietnamese but very tasty. I like the fact that the food has a sweet taste. If you like Indian food you will love Rasa. There isn't a ton of parking at this location in Southern Village so be aware of this before you go.
A+ all around. Happy considerate owner. Great food.
My husband and I have been eating here for almost 10 years (it was called Merlion before). We have since moved from the area but still drive up occasionally just for the one-of-a-kind cuisine and to see the smiling face of Simon. He always remembers us from our days as students and is always so kind. The food is great and the atmosphere is just as good. Highly recommend.
Great people and grea food! They have the best roasted duck! The same quality and taste as the ones you have in Asia. We go to Rasa Malaysia 2-3 times each months. Wish the restaurant is closer to where we live so we can go there even more. We haven’t had any dishes that we don’t like. Highly recommend!
Overall 8/10. Arguably the best Malaysian restaurant in RTP, good atmosphere, friendly staff and good food. Malaysian friends will say it’s “ok” (yes I’ve had better) but if you ask them is there anything better around here (RTP), the answer is probably “nope”, and I agree. Food: Tom Yum Soup- 8/10. Ironically, this place has the best Tom yum soup in RTP, yes better than all the Thai restaurants I frequent, if you know a better place please let me know, this is one of my favourite soups. The seafood/protein portion is generous, and the balance in flavour of the sour lemongrass vs the sweet and spicy is the way I like it. Sizzling Beef - 7/10 lots of protein, taste is a little on the sweet side, but it good and also come with a healthy portion of veggies. The best thing about it? It sizzles nicely when first served, a nice show piece. Pineapple fried rice - 7.5/10, a classic dish and tastes great. We ordered shrimp style and the flavours went well, texture was good, really not much to complain about. I remember they used to serve it with half a hollowed out pineapple, but we didn’t see it this time around. Deep fried sesame balls: 9/10, I don’t know if it’s always like this, but the sesame balls came out fresh and hot! They tasted like they were freshly fried, the outer skin was very nice and crisp, and the red bean paste center didn’t taste like the regular frozen type, not overly oily or overly sweet. Hit the spot just right. I rarely give anything in the 9s or 10, but the way this came out today, I don’t think I’ve had fried sesame balls that tasted this good in years. Drinks: Thai Iced tea 7.5/10, honestly tastes very good, also better than a lot of Thai places in rtp Summary: This place seems to do Central/South East Asian cuisines very well in general
Highly recommended. I am a Malaysian that loves to eat – and I can certify the food here is authentic Malaysian Food that is prepared very well. It is a nice Chapel Hill restaurant, so the prices are not cheap – but it is totally worth it if you are looking for a great selection of authentic Malaysian dishes.
Very delicious, AUTHENTIC Malaysian food. Please order the authentic dishes and not some American Chinese dishes here. I especially enjoy the Char Kway Teow, Laksa, Hokkien Mee, and Stuffed You Tiao. Atmosphere is clean and pleasant with 50’s rock and roll music. Service can be a little slow when they’re busy but the food is worth it.
Everything about this spot is so great - super staff, affordable, absolutely delicious veggie offerings, and quite unique. The vegetarian Laksa is the best I’ve had anywhere. At the end of the day, the folks here are just wonderful. Definitely fortunate to have this so close!
Delicious food and Thai iced tea! Lettuce wraps were a refreshing and healthy meal in the summer heat. Wide noodle dish was also great, like Asian comfort food. Wish we lived closer to it. Very reasonably priced too!
You'd appreciate it more if you have a decent idea about Malaysia and the food there...a lot of south east Asian influences including India and Srilanka and that makes the food a dance festival for your taste buds. A cozy small business that values love and joy and it is reflected in their food, decor and service....
Authentic Malaysian cuisine. Char Kway Teow is fabulous. So do the Wat Tan Ho. Went there twice in 3 days.
Great Malaysian cuisine in big portions! Definitely try the lemon fish if you're a seafood fan. My partner and I tried to split it, but the waitress talked us into ordering some delicious noodles, too.
Culinary experience was fresh, flavorful, and fully satisfying! Fresh EVERYTHING like basil and chilies growing on their patio! Food is always consistent thanks to the hard work of Simon being there to always make sure every dish is perfect. I love the balance between the rich flavor of their coconut laksa and light wide rice noodles. Adventurous combination of desserts as well as flavor, SERIOUSLY a huge fan for life and crazy in love with their sago (delicate tapioca pudding w smokey rich and creamy sauce)!!! They have warm desserts too such as the red bean pastry topped with light sesame seeds. Gosh its like being in Malaysia, SO authentic! Contactless payment by calling them directly was a huge convenience. Sometimes the volume of takeout orders can be high in the evening so its good to not be in a rush when anticipating these things. Their food is the best in the triangle so its understandable everyone want to order all at once! If I could only eat at one place for the rest of my life I would choose Rasa all day everyday.
This was my first visit and it didn’t disappoint. The food was amazing! My daughter and I tried things we hadn’t eaten before and it was flavorful, beautifully presented, vegetarian friendly, with just the right amount of spice. Our server, Pene, was so attentive. She noticed that I didn’t like cilantro and she made sure that no cilantro be used as a garnish. She also noticed that I didn’t eat the carrots and asked to make sure that there wasn’t a problem with them (there wasn’t, I’m not a fan). Most servers don’t pay attention to these small details and we were impressed. This was a wonderful experience all around and I can’t wait for my next visit.
While riding our bikes along the Morgan Creek Trails, we took a detour into the Southern Village Green. We decided to stop for a late lunch at Rasa Malaysia. We were excited to see they have a nice outside patio with tables spaced safely apart. Their manager was serving as maitre d’, waiter and bus boy, but soon had us seated and got us started with drinks. The menu choices are outstanding and we ordered a soup, an appetizer and a main course of duck. The food arrives quickly and was in takeout containers, but was steaming hot and delicious. We love finding places we can ride our bike to lunch and then dine outside. We will be back and try exploring more interesting menu choices. Please give it a try, and be patient, the poor owner is working as fast as he can.
Simon and his food are such gifts to our community! Try the laksa, tom yum and mie goreng if you haven’t already! Just as good in person as it is at home!
Fantastic restaurant with a great atmosphere. Sometimes they have big potted pepper plants that are beautiful and well cared for. All the food is flavorful and delicious. The menu is not just Malaysian, there is food from all over southeast Asia. I could be mistaken but I think the owners and some of the staff are Singaporean. The price can be a little higher than similar restaurants in the Triangle but it is worth it, especially if you are dining in.
This was my first time at Rasa Malaysia. Our waitress had recommended the perfect dishes. She was so sweet and happy that we were there. Our food was so delicious. I will definitely be back. Thank you for having gluten free option. I got shrimp vegetable delight and the fried fish filet with coconut sauce. The French Martini was amazing. I wish I had enough room for dessert.
It was my first visit, we were celebrating a friend's birthday. The food was so fresh. The sweet and sour chicken was divine!!! Our waited was very nice and attentive, she made suggestions on things we should try. Overall, it was a great experience. I will be going back!!
This place is wonderful. The service is the best and the place makes you feel like family. I come here regularly so everyone always knows my order but I’m sure all the customers get this great kind of service. The food is really excellent and always comes out pretty quickly. Fresh veggies and delicious food. My favorite are the sizzling beef and all the appetizers. The steak is flavored well and super hearty with excellent portions. I LOVE this PLACE!!
I have a summer home in Southern Village and this is clearly my go to Restaurant! I love Simon, Penny and all the staff. The food is always good and if I am meeting up with friends for lunch from another area, they always want to go to this restaurant. My daughter and her husband, and three grandchildren also love this restaurant. I like eating inside, but it is very special for Sunday nights when there’s music on the green and I can enjoy outside, even bring my dog and have a lovely meal
We eat at Rasa Malaysia a lot. We love sitting in the cozy indoor dining in the winter or the beautiful tucked away patio in the summer. My 11 year old son literally begs for me to get their Thai fried rice all the time. I love mi goreng and of course the classic pad Thai. The owner is wonderful and it’s such a rare treat to eat at a place where the owner is there making sure food and service are always great. He will make sure they leave certain things out for my kids (our me:) and that we get everything just the way we like it. With so many corporate options taking over I love that I have a great independently owned authentic Malaysian restaurant so close!
Sunday early evening with 6 friends. everyone enjoyed their meals. Service was excellent and we added the sparking sake to our next wine list...
Excellent food, welcoming and friendly staff. I'll be back often!
I've wanted to try this place for years and finally did with my girlfriend who lived in Singapore for years. Walking in, us fifty year olds were the youngest people in the joint. The service was very quick, super friendly, and attentive. The ambiance/environment is good. The tables are not crowded, there is bar seating as well as a patio, and the noise level was good. We kept commenting on to each other about the eclectic mix of background music and left to dig deeper into classic country and oldies hits. The food was downright epic! Whatever top menu tofu, shrimp, and coconut udon noodle thing we had was beyond delicious. BEYOND. The chicken and bok choy in a white glaze was amazing. I also cant remember what the tofu appetizer was called with shredded veggies on top but I would give you my pet for a lifetime supply. The cocktails even were just... wow. And for what they charge!!!??? This place is downright divine. Highly recommended.
Stopped here on our way back from the mountains. Beautiful restaurant, friendly staff and delicious food. I had a chicken satay and it was easily one of the best I ever had. If only it was closer to home! Highly recommended.
What a pleasant experience! The food here is one of the best in the triangle. Has both Indian and Japanese. We were served a lot of food for the modest prices the have. The Japanese waiter was very polite and professional. Would definitely come here again!
Very tasty food and awesome service! We ordered the roti canai and drunken noodles. Both dishes had good portions. As people who eat a lot of south east asian food, we were impressed about how balanced and delicious the food was. We thought the service was fantastic---the food came faster than expected, and our waitress was so nice. The restaurant let us bring our own cake to eat and celebrate a birthday, and the waitress was happy to take a picture of our group. We'll definitely be coming back to try more dishes!
The flavors in the dishes we ordered were perfectly balanced, and the ingredients tasted fresh. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and offered good recommendations. We felt well taken care of and will be back!
We don't often eat at Rasa, our excuse for that is we forget it's there. However, it makes having lunch at Rasa a real treat for us. The food is always great, and very different from any of the other local restaurants we frequent. I'm not very familiar with Malaysian food, but I've liked every dish I've tried there. Looking forward to visiting again soon.
Very delicious, AUTHENTIC southeastern Asian food. Try the authentic dishes and not some American Chinese dishes here. We especially enjoy the Laksa, Hokkien Mee, and Stuffed You Tiao. The Thai tea is good as well, not too much sweet. Atmosphere is clean and pleasant with 50’s rock and roll music.
Delicious! We got the Tahu Goreng, Beef Satay, Vegetarian Mee Goreng, and Hainanese Fried Chicken Rice. They are all delicious! We also got the Lo Hei, which is a Chinese New Year salad (Prosperity Toss). Glad to be able to find Lo Hei/Yu Sheng in North Carolina. EDIT: Also recommend their popiah! Most dishes can be made VEGETARIAN/VEGAN.
It is one of my favorite Asian food places in the Triangle and a rare place where you can find Malaysian food in this area. The food is subtle and flavorful and combines the flavors of South and East Asia, finding perfect harmony in the menu of this place as a great representation of Malaysian food! Dip a piece of Roti Canai in the Curry Ayam and dig in— you cannot go wrong with this entree!
Wonderful Malaysian food served joyfully in a beautiful setting. Healthy food prepared from the freshest ingredients. You cannot do better!
We stopped in for lunch and were seated right away. Such great service. The food was AMAZING! We had never eaten here before but we will certainly be returning. The samosas, and sweet and sour chicken were the best we have ever had! Fresh ingredients and incredible flavor - so impressed!
This is a cozy restaurant with a beautiful ambience. They have their own vegetables garden and its fun to see. They have indoors and outdoor seating. The service is good too. Coming to food, the money bag was appetizing, it had shrimp and calamari in it and looked fancy. The Thai fried rice was decent, the roti canai and ayam chicken was really good, the roti was the best - it was soft and freshly made. We also tried their pad Thai noodles, they was good. Overall it was alot of food but definitely enjoyed it.
I found this place by doing a search for Roti Canai near me. This place definitely didn't disappoint. I have been here thrice and haven't explored anything else but that on the menu. Order the roti canai with the extra canai. You won't be disappointed.
Nice restaurant... food was delcious... Why I didn't give a 5 star is because we were seated and waited for like 15 minutes for a waiter to even ask us what drink we want...just sitting with menus (no water, cutlery, napkins).. then my friend went and asked if anybody was going to come to our table.. it wasn't crowded...
Update April '23: everything denoted spicy is still very mild, but tasty. Surprisingly, only fried dumplings, no steamed (which I prefer). Good pan-asian food, but "spicy" (4 on a scale of 1 to 5) was very mild. At least they brought some chili oil. The dumpling wrappers were too thick.
The nasi lemak tasted like plastic had leeched into the food, either during storage or preparation. The char kuay teow tasted way too burnt, and not the good charred kind. Can’t believe the prices here considering the food is just reheated. Would not recommend.
So disappointed. All the food was the same color. Brown. The Pad Thai that we ordered with chicken came with chicken and dried out tofu. No taste of tamarind. No egg. No peanuts or scallions. The rice noodles were over cooked. The wonton soup tasted like onion soup with bits of dried onions in it. The lettuce wraps did not appear to have any chicken in it. The salt and pepper shrimp were not crispy. After reading all the wonderful reviews, I was really surprised.
I went here on a Friday evening, and order one appetizer and two entrees. It took over 20 minutes for them to serve the appetizer, so imagine how long did I wait for the entrees. As for the food, the chicken in hainanees chicken rice was too dry and there was no skin on it, which is not authentic at all. Also, Rice itself was too salty. Anyway, waiter and waitress were nice, and may compensate a bit to the overall.
Charged me a dollar for chili oil and then gave me a container a quart full. When I laughed about it and asked for more they said that's what they give. Mind-boggling. Food was average, but definitely not maly. More Chinese influences and the portion of anchovies to chicken was obsserd. Check my photos.
We recently dined at this place, and I was deeply disappointed by the service provided. We placed a basic order for two, which required minimal service and no special requests. Despite the straightforward nature of our visit, our server—who seemed to be the owner—was overly pushy, suggesting unrequested add-ons. This not only led to an unexpectedly high bill but also a very uncomfortable dining experience. Furthermore, after tipping 12% on the total bill, we were abruptly told that this was insufficient for us to receive a to-go container. This felt particularly unjust given the minimal interaction and service required during our meal. It was disheartening to be treated this way over a tip, especially considering the service provided. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend this place. The treatment we received was both unprofessional and unwelcoming, overshadowing any aspect of our meal. It’s unfortunate, as we had hoped for a much better dining experience.
Ended up going here on a Friday evening and ordered their appetiser sampler (which said on the menu serves 3) but definitely not! The Mie Goreng was good but the Pad Thai was really disappointing and bad! There was barely any meat and it seemed like all it had was fish sauce, the scent and taste made it impossible to eat it! The wait time for our food to arrive was also really long and we were not happy with the experience! We ended up tipping the bare minimum because of this experience and the waitress clearly was unhappy and expressed her frustration in a condescending way by reading the tip amount loud and just walked. Im asian myself and I do cook a lot of asian food including using fish sauce but this was just unacceptable and I also understand waitresses don’t make a lot but that does not mean them or the restaurants serving bad overly price food can penalise us customers to make up for that
I normally don't give 1 star for a restaurant because I believe even if the worst tasting food can be improved. But this 1 star is for the service. This experience at the Rasa Malaysia restaurant is shockingly disappointed to the point that I don't think there's any redemption. I only share facts and hope it helps you consider whether you would want to this restaurant: We were a group of 8 people with 2 kids that dined at Rasa Malaysia for dinner on Monday. It wasn't super busy (half of tables were taken) around the time we arrived (6:30pm) and we ordered our food. For the next hour, we waited for our dishes patiently, only asked once the waitress about the status of the food. We could tell they were busy as they stated that they were understaffed that night. Then before our food came, one of us who paid for the meal was asked by the waitress to increase our tip to 20%, which we accepted because we understood that we're a big group. However, for the next half an hour, we observed that customers who came later got their food before us. We didn't say anything but only asked the waitress about the status of our food, which she ignored making eye contacts with us because she's so busy serving other tables. There were 2 other waitresses around but they all seemed busy and distracted. Then with a total waiting time of an hour and 40 minutes, we finally received our food. We were so hungry that we just started eating without complaining. Towards the mid of the meal, a couple of us wanted to ask the restaurant if we can be offered a free desserts or something extra to compensate the long waiting time. When we approached the waitress, she was very busy and did not respond to our request but just told us to wait longer until the owner (who she pointed to as the chef too) gets less busy. We took it as a "no" so we went back to our table and finished eating. Meanwhile, 2 customers who were sitting next to our table and also waited for at least an hour threw the menu on the table and said furiously "this is ridiculous!" when they also realized that people who came later got the food first and they simply left right after. While we were about to be done, the waitress came to our table with a plate of freshly fried sesame balls. We appreciated that they eventually met our request. While I said "thank you" and chatted with her a bit more, I thought this whole ordeal was done and at least we had an happy ending. But the waitress left with a chilling statement (in Chinese which I can understand): "Don't make such demand next time, I don't need customers like you." (不要要挟我,我不需要你们这样的顾客。) Wow. I think I was more shocked than upset. We understand that they were understaffed and they were busy. But it still doesn't justify the last thing that she said, which signified that she or they did not really value customer experience or at least there's no sign of making things better. She asked for 20% tip, which equaled to $40 since we were a big group. I don't think the service we received matched with the value at all. Finally, objectively, the food still tasted delicious. But with the attitude of the restaurant, that doesn't even change a dial on the whole experience. Understaffing is always something that restaurant business owners struggle from time to time. I saw other business dealt with it creatively and satisfyingly, which means that there's way to manage situations like this better. But what we observed at Rasa Malaysia made me think that what the source of their confidence is and I wonder how many times does she think she can say that? Well, you might still choose to go to the restaurant in the end. But for me and some of my friends, this is quite a discouraging experience and we will NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone.
I went here tonight with a friend. We had vegetarian spring rolls (terrible) and I had Drunken Noodle with tofu. I asked for broccoli as one of my vegetables and they said it would be $5 more. I got 3 small pieces of broccoli for that price. I also asked for Srirachi sauce and was told they only have chili oil and that also would be extra. They did give me some soy sauce for free. This was one of the worst places for Asian food I have been. The Drunken Noodles had no flavor or sauce or anything. I will not return to this place. Terrible food and terrible service. If I could give it less than one star I would.
No attention to customers and painfully slow service. You will need at lease one full hour to get your meal for just a party of two. When we last dined here there was only one other couple dining and it still took over an hour. However, there are two people who will stand in the back and stare out at you with your empty water and appetizer plates. Too many other fantastic Asian establishments in Chapel Hill to try this one again. Also, I find that the food here is cooked with very-very heavy oil and iodized salt which really weighed down the pallet. A thoughtful dining space, but half the kitchen staff seemed to be at a center dining room shelling peas and shucking corn. I mean prep should be done out back- it's a little much to behold. Skip this one especially if you have tickets.
Food was excellent. But the waitress forced and pushed us to Tip here, it’s unusual, she added her own Tip amount and argued with me. It happened twice. Hope the management address this issue, Appreciate if management can address the waitress attitude.
I would never eat here again. After I left a tip, I was informed that customers are required to tip a mandatory 20%, even though this policy is not stated anywhere on the menu. I base my tips on the quality of customer service, and the service I received was far from satisfactory. We had to wait 30 minutes after finishing our meal just to get the check and to-go boxes.
This was one of my absolute favorite places to eat in Chapel Hill. I’ve brought family and friends many times and sung its praises. Tonight (party of 3 adults and 2 toddlers) was the first time I left feeling disappointed—and VERY humiliated. We waited about 10 minutes before anyone brought water. Our server walked by a few times saying “I’ll be right there,” but didn’t take drink orders; when she finally came, she dropped off 3 icy waters and just left, no beverage order offered. We had to flag her down to place appetizers, then again to order tea, then again to place our meal orders and each one took a long time despite the dining room not being busy. Another guest actually had to go inside to locate her for their martinis, visibly frustrated. The food was excellent—my mom loved it, which is why I kept reassuring her we should be patient. But the end of the meal crossed a line: the server asked for my card without presenting a check first, swiped it, and only afterward returned with the folio. The service was absolutely terrible. I left a cash tip, and she opened the folio in front of us and told me “that’s not enough, it has to be 20%.” I asked why, and she said “that’s just how it is.” I was shocked and embarrassed; my mom was visibly upset. It was clearly stated on the menu that parties of 6 would be automatically charged 20% tip, which is completely fine. But not only were we a party of 5 but the kids were not even served, so technically she serviced 3 people. I want this place to succeed, but this experience ruined a family night out. Constructive feedback: please ensure servers (1) greet and offer drinks promptly, (2) check in on pacing, (3) present an itemized bill before charging a card, and (4) never pressure guests about tip amounts, it really defeats the purpose of tipping. The food remains great, but I won’t be back for a while, if ever unless service culture improves.
