Munch Box Chatsworth Reviews
I've been eating here for a long time. I love the chili cheese burgers and chili cheese fries. Great food. Great service. Fast and friendly. The people who work there are the best. It's opened in the mid 50's. It's a wonderful piece of nostalgia. If you are in the area, it's a great place to grab a bite to eat. Outdoor bench seating, and they only take cash. So be prepared.
Cash only burger place with cheap, high quality burgers, hot dogs, fries (all with tasty chili and cheese options), sodas, lemonade, rootbeer floats and free chili peppers. It's run by a great, salt-of-the-earth crew that are super helpful and friendly. There's only outdoor seating, but plenty of it. I had the double hickory chili cheeseburger and some chili cheese fries. They surely shaved some days off my life, every bite was worth it. Next time you're in the NW SF Valley, it's worth stopping by.
I had a fantastic experience at The Munch Box, thanks to Trystan’s exceptional service! They were attentive, friendly, and made sure everything was perfect during my visit. It’s clear they take pride in making customers feel welcome. Trystan’s positive attitude and professionalism really stood out, and I’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend!
Great burgers that have that classic "home-style" feel it. It is cash only so be prepared ahead of time for at least 20~ for 2 people. The staff is extremely friendly and forthcoming. Definitely a hidden gem in the valley known to the locals for their amazing chilli burgers. One caveat and it's of no fault of their own, but the train tracks are half a block over and you do get the occasional transient wandering through from time to time.
So tasty and cheap! I’ve driven by here a lot and finally tried it. The burgers are simple, yet so good. The fries are great as well! I will definitely be coming back to try their hot dogs, which look amazing.
The Munch Box opened in 1956 and is owned and operated by the same family since. I’ve been going there since 1965. Their “Hickory Burger” is a chili-burger like no other. Order fries and you will get a generous amount of the best fries you’ll find. If you like chili-fries or hot dogs, they too are amazing. We now live in Idaho. Every time we come to SoCal to visit family, the Munch Box is one of the first things on our minds! It’s that good! Nice, clean (mostly covered) outdoor seating, you’ll feel right at home visiting with other people enjoying the experience of the place. It is a designated Historical Landmark in Chatsworth, California. I could go on and on, however you get the idea! Ya just have to try it for yourself.
Hickory Burger is outstanding. Hot dogs are great oh, but the award-winning french fries are absolutely the best in the valley. Super large portion one portion feeds two adults and two young children. Root beer floats are big hit with the kids. 1 to 1:30 seems to be the best time to go. Hard to beat for a good cheeseburger.
No one will confuse the Munch Box with a fancy restaurant. If you're looking for tablecloths, you've come to the wrong place. What you will find here is a small but solid menu of reasonably priced hamburgers, hot dogs, and fries. Service was fast and very friendly, and the food was prepared well. There's a good amount of outdoor seating, much of it shaded. As a bonus, you can watch Metrolink and freight trains go past On my most recent visit I had a double cheeseburger with tomatoes, pickles, onions, and chili. It was perfectly balanced. Their fries are thin cut with good flavor and texture. The valley needs more places like this.
Great burgers and chili dogs, super friendly staff. Had a chili chese burger and fries. Both were great tasting and not crazy priced. Outdoor seating at picnic tables, they were fine even if was a bit hot. Will go again for sure.
This great little hamburger hot dog stand is awesome. it's been there forever I grew up in the San Fernando Valley. Very highly recommended. Every time I'm in The SF Valley I try to stop here and grab lunch. brings back the old memories from the 80s .I tried just a Regular hamburger not really a fan on this one . 😕 it Only comes with a patty no lettuce Onion You can get it with catchup mustard or thousand islands. You do get tomatoes pickle so pretty much plan jane burger Step up your game, make a traditional grilled Burger. With everything or. just stick with the great chilly Dog
Wish I would’ve taken a photo but I was starving. This is 10 games before they win the World Series against the Yankees.. Dodgers are taking it all the way. Bomb food at a fair cash price!!! Come check them out.
This place has been my Hubby's favorite burger joint since he was a kid, a LONG time ago! LOL Anyway, he introduced me to the best chili burgers! Their frys are fresh and it's great to top off the meal with a root beer float! Great place and highly recommend it!
I have loved the burgers here since the 1970's as a kid growing up in Chatsworth. This place is both nostalgic and delicious offering the same great food that I remember from years ago. I have enjoyed bringing my kids and husband here for a taste of my childhood. Way to go for keeping up the tradition.
This spot disserves to have a 5 star review, my husband brought me here for the first time two years ago, I was amazed by their simple chili cheese hamburger, better than Tommy's tbh no offense to all Tommy's fans by the way, This has been my husband's go to spot since he was a child (now 53 years old) and I see why now.
🇺🇸 USA Excerpt from Eat the World Los Angeles: The Munch Box has been a Valley staple since 1956 and is housed in a modernist Googie car culture gem that has eventually been landmarked. Chatsworth residents have been enjoying these floats and the messy chili burgers under that space age overhang for a long time. Since the early 90's, developers had wanted to tear it down and replace it with an ugly strip mall most likely, so thankfully it was landmarked in 2003. It is hard to miss the small yellow hut when cruising down Devonshire and hopping off the 118 on your way to Simi Valley and Moorpark is pretty easy. While the numbers next to items get a bit bigger over the years, the Coca Cola-branded menu and offerings all stay the same.
This is the place I go to get the best burger I've ever had! This burger spot is a jem! If I lived far away I would make a trip often to this historic landmark just for the delicious burger and the half bag of french fries.....so glad my wife turned me on to this spot. She used to say I want to take you to the munch box,now I know
I’ve been coming here since the 80s. The previous owner and the new owner, his son. They remember my name of course I don’t remember his name. I’m not good with names. But I’ve been living in Colorado for the last 10 years and the guy still remembers my name. That goes to the five star rating for service. Staff is always friendly, upbeat happy. It’s a burger place and their burgers and their dogs are excellent! The five star on the atmosphere is because of a combination of friendly, great food in the place is from 1956 and hasn’t changed. It’s fun.
What a gem here in the Valley! The Munch Box is not just a place to grab a bite, it’s a piece of Chatsworth history. Built back in the 1950s, this landmark still carries that classic charm, and the food is just as timeless. The menu is simple, delicious, and the prices are fantastic you really can’t beat it! It’s the kind of spot that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time while still enjoying a fresh, tasty meal. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!
After delivering road base to Chatsworth, I like to stop by the munch box and have myself the basic cheeseburger fries and Coke. This place is great.
Been going here for over 30 years. A staple for Chatsworth for simple comfort hot dogs and burgers. I remember the days when I'd walk home from school and get a bag of fries for a dollar. I do miss those days. My go-to is the eastern with relish. Chili cheese fries are also great too.
The chili is very tasty. The Hickory burger was worth the drive. Highly recommend.
If you are ever in Chatsworth or near there and love great junk food, The Munch Box is the place to go. Parking is usually not a problem. This place has been there forever it seems, I think sometime in the mid 50s it went up. It has chili dogs, burgers, fries. They thought of closing it once and that did not go over well with the neighborhood. This roadside burger stand has been owned and operated by the same family, kept the same Googie architecture, and nearly the same menu, with a variety of burgers, hot dogs, and fries since it opened. The prices have gone up, but other than that it is the same. When development threatened to close the restaurant in the early 2000’s, the community wrote 1,700 letters and petitions to the city council, urging that the burger stand be placed on the list of Cultural-Historical landmarks. They won and it is now a protected landmark. The food is the best. We love their chili dogs with raw onion. Their burgers with chili are great. I don't care for American Cheese, not really cheese now is it, and that is all they have, but my grandson loves it. They still sell root beer and even though it is the same you can get at a grocery, it seems better there. It is go to the counter, order, wait a minute and either eat there, outdoors, or in your car or take home. We always stay and on cold days we eat in the car.
Friendly and caring people = great customer service! Delicious food, the chili has a balanced taste with a little bit of spice. Open air seating with a view of the mountains! Bring your friends and family they’ll love it! Bring Cash too!
HIC burger was great , smoked flavor in the patties is excellent would recommend! Prices for what you get are great . Awesome historical burger stand !
Almost as good as a time machine. A short, simple menu with all the good stuff. I had a double cheeseburger with fries and it cost me less than $10. Parking was limited, but a few spots were open. All the seating is outdoors. It seems the other customers all seem to be friendly, conversations were starting across tables with everyone who came by.
I grew up eating here, sinced moved away but any time I visit my family I'll try to stop by for a chili burger, chili fries and root beer. Had some today and it's still a 10/10. Glad it's still doing well! It's a landmark for a reason!!

My dad used to come here on his lunch break in 1976. I finally had it for the first time last week, Beyond outstanding. Great ambiance, history and chili burgers that are just to die for 😍🤤. It’s almost worth a trip to the Valley just for this place!
I have always been a Tommys chili burger fan, but I have to say The Munch Box's chili burger is way better. I have known about this place for a while but never made the visit. Do Not make this mistake. The food is amazing. The root beer float is great too. Very reasonable prices. I'll be back!
The food here is amazing!!! I am out here for training and needed something quick to eat. I had no idea that I was about to eat the best chili do i have ever eaten. Everything about it was perfect. They don’t skimp on the fries either. I am about to order a root beer float before I head home. I can only imagine how good the float is. The prices are very reasonable.
I LOVE the Munch Box! You coming to the Valley? This is where we are going. Great food at great prices. Got a double hick with cheese (no tomato) a western with cheese + kraut fries and a root beer all for around $20. Staff are always friendly and they get the food out quick. Customers (myself included) are a vibe in and of themselves. Places like this are a dying breed and should be treasured. It's an institution. We don't need more Starbucks. LONG LIVE THE MUNCH BOX!
Great food, history, and such a friendly staff and atmosphere - so nice to see places like this still around. I had the double hickory melt, chili fries, and had to have a rootbeer float - everything was excellent.
One more reason to still carry cash! This place serves probably the best chili burgers I've ever had, and at less than $6 per burger it's definitely worth the drive. I do wish they took credit, or even just Zelle/Venmo, but I am just glad they exist at all. Happy munching!

Food was just OK. Chili dog was fair. The fries were good but very oily. I also got a drink and for $14 plus change I wasn't full afterwards. Service was friendly and fast
I ordered a chili cheese dog with grilled onions. Food came out hot and the chili on my chili dog was very flavorful. Also their fries were nice and hot and were some of the best fries I’ve ever had.
It’s a nice little spot, service is quick and friendly, and the burgers taste like homemade in opinion. The great for the price 👌🏾 I had a double hickory burger with cheese and it was good, it comes with a chilli dog sauce, is not really strong and combines well with the burger. I would say that the patties are house made not frozen but I’m not sure and I didn’t ask. The fries are just normal but good and non of the food was very salty which is good tha way it is and you always can add some more if you like.
Probably the best chili cheeseburger I’ve ever had. The chili is very similar to Tommy’s in Canoga with maybe a warmer spice to it. The chili is perfectly proportioned to the burger, not an overwhelming wet mess but more of a condiment. Also, the smoked patty adds a well rounded meatiness to the whole thing. Munch box is a valley institution for a reason, it’s damn good.
The Munch Box is a long-time fixture in Chatsworth. Providing fresh, tasty ingredients daily for over 60 years! I would give 5 stars if it wasn't for their small servings. Recognized as a historical Landmark in the SFV. If you've got the munchies, the Munch Box will work. If you want to eat at a Historical Landmark, the Munch Box will do. If you're hungry and ready for a big meal, you may want to go elsewhere. The food is good, though, on the skimpy side (my only complaint). It's also brought in fresh daily. And they close when the food runs out. Family owned and operated; It's worth a visit if just simply for nostalgia's sake.
I am not a chili burger fan usually. But every now and then a classic chili burger is amazing. This vintage burger spot from 1956 is classic. Everything about this place is perfect for this place limited menu, cash only rootbeer floats. You can't ask for more, perfect classic, Valley 50s burger stand!

This place has been there for 50 years, cash only, nothing fancy but I was a teenager when I first went there...... a long time ago. Now it's pretty expensive, sit down restaurants are actually cheaper. It's a shame that the prices have gotten so high there I probably won't go back, sad .

Was Not impressed by this Food stand! The Fries very tasteless, Hot dog was okay. And Root beer Float could have been better. Not to Mention the woman that served Me kinda had an attitude towards her. The only thing that this place has going For it is the Fact that supposedly Charles Manson ones ate here! There is a writing on the wall oF the back oF the place, claiming that Manson himself wrote it. To Me personally it Looks to New! IF it’s that supposedly old, It would Look More weathered, It’s Like someone wrote it themselves. To get More people in!
Not bad food Hopefully you won't need the restroom if you are the wrong color. We watched a man and his son use it, and when we finished our meal, I asked for the key and the lady told me "We don't have a restroom"😡
Place is disrespectful to customers not to mention disgusting Extremely unsanitary roaches crawling all around the food ..... And they only accept cash .. Straight pure trash
