Madison Bear Garden Chico Reviews
it’s always a great time at the bear, however the bartenders can be quite rude. especially the one with the mullet. i tried to clarify that i only ordered one drink, after i mistakenly said the wrong name and he proceeded to make both of them. which is understandable. but, after i told him i only wanted one, he proceeded to display the biggest attitude to someone paying for a service.
The Madison Bear is an old time classic in Chico. It's a must stop while your in town. It has a wide array of delicious burgers, salads, chicken sandwiches & strips. All drinks are on tap as you peruse the eclectic atmosphere. It's a safe space for all & a love to local families for some good food, drink & family laughter.
It was a great time. Too bad everybody's prices have soared. It makes dining out a once a month event! Joe: "Hey Bill, how's it going? I heard you went on vacation!" Bill: "We sure did go on vacation. I took the family out to lunch. It was great."
Got my birthday meal. I went in and ordered the taco salad, and they were out of the house seasoned ground beef, so they replaced it with crispy chicken straps cut up. The Chipotle sauce was very spicy. Good salad, though.
Enjoyed the heck out of it. Don't miss the fun experience of stopping at one of Chico's classic hangouts. 21 and over after 8 pm. Burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches with curly fries in all styles. Fun for the whole crowd with games, the latest televised sports and two bars.
Went in for drinks and to watch football. Such a cool spot. The decor was second to none.
It's one of the coolest bars in downtown chico or really anywhere, for that matter. So much art is in the building on the ceilings. the walls, the tables even. The food is great and the drink service is amazing. They always have fun events inside and outside. Check it out. If you get the chance, it's a great place!
VERY COOL PLACEEEE- they have great food for decent prices Amazing decor!!!! Its so unique and you find something new every time I definitely recommend the pulled pork sandwich is superrr gooddd!!! I love coming here to eat and its such a staple of the chico experience. I take my friends here pretty often when we want to go out
Eclectic and funky decor. Always an interesting place to visit.
Pretty neat place and great burgers
This place has a cool atmosphere! Lots of small rooms and big patios make it easy to find a spot that matches the mood you're looking for. Victor behind the bar was very helpful and knowledgeable about the beers that they had. They had run out of pulled pork when I visited but he was able to suggest a different menu item that I think I enjoyed more than I would have what I originally ordered. I strongly recommend this place if you're ever in the Chico area!!
First time eating here. Love this place. Great food. That atmosphere was fun but definitely something new to me. I found it a little odd that after ordering your food, you have to order your soft drink at the actual bar. It's awkward when there are people drinking and you have a 3 yr old with you lol. Next time I know to keep the kid home. Overall a wonderful experience.
i have been go to country swing dance classes here every Thursday at 7pm and it's been a great experience
This is a Chico icon!! Some things never change and the Bear is at the top of this list! Bar food at its best along with a fun and entertaining vibe!
Great place for a quick bite, old school, walk in, couple bar area inside with seat yourself and order yourself. Nobody helped us and it was more than fine. Food was fresh, hot, flavorful. Would go back!
Best place to eat in chico, and the only place you can get a bacon cheeseburger with peanut butter on it. Highly recommended for anybody looking to get an authentic Chico experience
We're first timers Madison Bear Garden. We walked in and were immediately greeted by the bartender who told us how the place works. 1) Scan the QR code to see the menu on your phone 2) Place your order at the bar 3) Grab a table 4) When the food is ready they will call our name to come pic it up at that window over there ↰. We both got the The Great Bacon Burger with fries and were very happy with our selection. The place is filled with tchotchke which makes it fun to wonder around and look at. The patio is huge, comfortable, and mostly covered.
The same as it's always been. Very unique decor. This place has been here almost forever. After coming here for over 40 years I learned that they're affiliated with several other restaurants/bar and grills in other towns, good to know. Parking is sometimes a challenge. It's a fun place for the collage crowd after hours and a great lunch place for all others. Or just hang out for a beer and good company. Long lived the Bear....
Chico icon. I got to show my son the Madison Bear Garden. Before we went in my son said that he wants a burger with ALL the stuff on it, and when we left he said he was so full that I got to finish eating his fries. Good food, great atmosphere and neat experience with my son. Glad we went.
Excellent burgers and great fries/ ranch. Had the cherry sour cider and it was really good as well! Food is priced pretty much how you'd expect for a place like this. Expect between $16-25 and person before drinks.
Funky atmosphere with so much wall art that I see something new every time I go to visit! The food is classic and you can never go wrong with the bear burger. Daily deals on drinks and food make it a go to place for a broke college boy like me! Also cool dance floor (little small tho) and awesome patio and a random but cool super hero themed room.
Fun atmosphere! Tons of space and still gets crowded especially on the weekends or when hosting an event. Great out door space. I saw 3 bars, two inside and one outside. Great outdoor space with Coverdale seating area. Unfortunately the second floor was closed off. Food was good. You stand in line to order then wait for your name to be called then pick it up and find a table. Then wait in another line at one of the bars to get a drink, even for water.
An incredible selection of burgers, almost equaled by the variety of hot dogs! A wide variety of starters and side dishes - raises the bar for 'fun food at a bar." A historical building and a historic bar! The decor will keep you entertained while sharing a beverage with friends and enjoying the fantastic atmosphere! A very comfortable experience! 🍻🍔🌭🍟🍻
A very unique place . So fun to play I spy games with the kids. Loads of drink options .We tried several shots. Fun for a birthday dinner. Hamburgers great. Fries huge and fresh. The burger with peanut butter was really good. Try it! The pulled pork grilled cheese delicious and inspiration to make at home.
Timeless classic bar in Chico…really fun. Incredible atmosphere!!! Please don’t ever change a thing!!!! December 2023 edit…still love this place but wow do the bartenders hate life. As a former bartender, these guys have the most negative personalities I’ve seen with a bar staff in a while. Still a great place once you get away from them…. Keep it going!
Walked in on a recommendation from a friend. It truly did not disappoint! We happened to be there on Bingo night...so much fun. The whole place reeks of fun from the past, present, and future. It is an iconic place. If you are in the area, it is a MUST stop. It is a self-service place. You order and pay for your food, then go to any bar that is available, get your libation, (You will pay as you go, no open tabs) and find a place to sit and enjoy the surroundings. The *Bear* is a classic!!
Came to visit Chico and a friend recommended this place! Didn’t know what to expect but they said the jiffy burger is a must and once seeing the menu, I also had to try the bear burger and both were super yummy!!! We got chili cheese fries and garlic fries with our order and loved it. You do need to order at the window when you first walk in and then wait for your name to be called so make sure to order first.
The food was pretty good. Had a good time there. I loved their onion rings. I had the beer cheeseburger, it was really good. Everything was made fresh. The fries that came with that were delicious and the onion rings were ordered separately. Everybody was very nice. 8-26-22 Visited again. Again the food was delicious. Everyone was friendly. I really appreciate the staff here.
Eating at the "World Famous Madison Bear Garden" has been a treat of mine for 20+ yrs, and I'm finally going to give it it's dues. My wife and I went to use our birthday coupons for a Sunday lunch, and we arrived at 12:45pm. Since football is over, and no baseball in sight... it was a relatively quiet afternoon. She ordered the "Singin' the Blues" burger, curly fries, and a side order of fried mushrooms...I ordered the "Bravo Avocado" with a side salad. Drinks must be purchased at the bar, so we also got a pitcher of soda (with free refills) and waited at our table while looking at the wall-to-wall decor in every nook and cranny. It's a beautiful place with ALWAYS something new to spout and discuss. Our food was called in less than 10 minutes, and we dug in. The burgers were cooked perfectly, and piled with the add-ons...including pickle spears. The mushrooms were delicious and fried to a perfect brown, as were the curly fries. We ate, listened to the 70's soundtrack played over the speakers, and discussed the varying displays. Before we knew it, 1 1/2 hrs had passed, and we were heading out the door. Sure, it's busier on Fri/Sat nights with the college in, but for lunch it can't be beat. Remember to tip the cooks/counter/bar staff, as they EARN their wage by being both hard workers and friendly employees to ALL customers. First timers can't go wrong with the traditional "Bear Burger", however...up your game and try any of the others with an extra patty. 5 starts isn't justifying this establishment.
Didn't know what to expect coming in - but wow! This place is definitely an interesting one when it comes to decor and is now what we expected from the outside - as we should have known, never judge a book by its cover! Food was good - though wish the cheese was melted. Beer selection was great with plenty of local beers. The real MVP here though is the eclectic interior design of the place - there's plenty see with lots of interesting little visual tidbits. Lots of seating indoors (socially distanced) and some outdoor seats as well.
They have good burgers here. We usually stop by when we are in town. This time I had a Bravo Avocado burger. It takes a moment because each burger is made fresh from the grill. It seems they put the meat on the grill after an order is placed. The environment is very old fashion and lots of prompt everywhere. Minors are not allowed to enter after 9pm so plan on eating here earlier in the day if you are a minor.

Good food, good vibe, friendly staff. Awesome bloody Mary's. Every age was having a great time
Blast from the past. Best curly fries ever great turkey sandwich as well I have been waiting to eat here for years

We had a wonderful lunch at Madison Bear Garden and enjoyed the fun atmosphere
I like this place because of the atmosphere and the great art on the walls and ceilings. The food is great as well, I tried the bear burger and their curly fries. It's too bad they couldn't fit a pool table or two in there, but I can understand with their limited space and amount of seating. This is a great place to bring friends if you wanted to drink and maybe watch a game on TV and eat good food but not much else.
Other than having to order your food at one window, and waiting for your name to be called, and getting your drinks at another spot, the bar, it was pretty good. I suspect when it's not filled with students, it's a lot easier to get your food and drinks without a huge line. I had the Grilled Cheese Hamburger. My friend had the pulled Pork sandwich. Both were good. The regular, curly, fries were good and crispy. The bathroom was clean, but could be bad on the weekends because it's small. Recommended but, likely not during the normal college semester. Would go again.
This is the coolest diner ever, I've eaten here prior to the event our school band just had here and its usually pretty great. However, service for our group was pretty horrible this time around, they were supposed to supply sliders and water for multiple highschool/college bands and dropped off only 25 of these small sliders at a time maybe 3 times with hour intervals the whole time and were hardly available which was very upsetting because the rest of the diner didn't appear to be that busy.
I only had the crispy chicken salad when I went but now I want to go back and try the burgers because they looked really good!
For a Sunday dinner the place had a great atmosphere and vibes Everyone was helpful and courteous
College bar isn't really my scene, but it was fine in mid July. Decent drink prices and selection. The Jiffy burger was actually pretty good.
Fun party spot with dollar shots the night we went. That being said, they did run out of many ingredients to drinks before midnight. Milk, and some sort of alcohol or mixer, for the fancy shots. We tried to get 2-3 of the shots and they couldn't make them. Maybe they were busier than usual. Quite a few outdoor light bulbs were burnt out, and our table that we picked could use a good sanding and a level. Still worth going and it was fun, but the table issues drove me up the wall. So check over your spot before it gets too busy. This was highly busy, especially for the younger crowd. I'd say most people were 22-28. With a few smattering of those older. This is the place to be because you can be loud and meet all your friends. The ladies bathroom wasn't filthy, but also not clean. Comparable to a truck stop bathroom.
It's a quirky little place, almost like you walked into a pirate ship! It is a self service, you pick up your order at the kitchen (where you also order). Lots of things to look at, so take the kids if you want, there are also some aralcade games, and a photo booth (which took my money, and then rebooted before we could even take any photos, which was a bummer). Just make sure you go before 9pm, as no one under 21 is allowed after 9pm.
They're veggie burger is extremely basic. I would not buy another one. But they have a great selection of microbrews.
Winderful service, good food, and a nice relaxing atmosphere for lunch. We got the jiffy, a peanut butter hambuger with cheese and oddly satisfying. Albeit, the winner was the papa bear, enriched with BBQ sauce and a fried onion ring. The papa bear was more like a western bacon. Overall, 4 stars!
A visual & aural kaleidoscopic carnival vibe, like the Dad Den of a retired circus clown, smothered like a festival corndog in over-the-top random kitsch that, though intense, feels welcoming & the inviting nonetheless. Few unifying themes to discern, but exploring & looking for one leads from one surprising corner to another. Loud & the informal like your living room on game day, thanks to dozens of TVs tuned to live sports, & people freely wandering & seating themselves where the gameplay is hot & the wall art resonates. Well-done bar food, priced as can be expected, limited mainly to burgers, hot dogs, & sandwiches. Full bar, extensive beer options, but limited non-alcoholic drinks. The Pulled Pork is worth going back for, the Buffalo Wings were a surprise favorite, & Curly Fries of all sorts hit the spot! No waiters—order food at the counter to the left of the entrance, & buy drinks separately at the bar to the right. Wait for your name to be called (be alert, cuz as mentioned, it’s LOUD) & pick up food where you ordered it. Bus yourself. Food can take a while, especially when the crowds arrive at kickoff, but this isn’t a place for people in a hurry. Walk around, look around, drink a round, & take your time with people who enjoy each other’s company!
Great place to go if you're looking for something with a good vibe and great service — food is a little on the pricier side, but that's okay. I highly recommend the Sourdough Burger! Delicious :) Has a lot of burgers with bbq sauce, and while I'm not a fan, it's great for people who are. Very kind and patient staff, great music playing — announcements are a bit loud, but that's understandable, considering how busy they get at times. Overall an 8/10! Great for tourists or visitors!
Good food and pretty good history items in there. Really good service too.
Even single adults like myself who showed up to an empty restaurant at 5:30 on a Wednesday couldn't get the manager to put the NFL Network game on just one of their 15+: televisions. 2 Stars all around. Bartender and the kitchen staff are very nice.
Went on a trip to Chico and decided to try this gem. Friends have told me this was a super popular place for the college folk to go and indeed the restaurant has a hip pub-like atmosphere. The good: The atmosphere was pretty fun. There were a lot of young families when we went and the staff was very welcoming. Great location. Great area of town. Historic building. The food came out fast. Their burgers were really good. I ordered the Papa bear and also a side of onion rings. The burger was juicy, properly cooked, and well seasoned. The bun tasted fresh and the sauces were great. The BBQ sauce they keep on the tables is just the right blend of sweet and spicy. The fries were very good too and cooked just right and salted properly. Lots of places to sit and eat on a Sunday afternoon. The bad: The onions rings were a bit of a miss. Ours seemed over cooked and over salted. The ranch also tasted yuck. There is ranch you can get cheap at the store that tasted better than what they serve here so they should just switch to another brand. They don't offer Coke Zero or fun drinks like Angry Orchard or Mikes. In the ladies restroom my wife witnessed some young ladies who were sick and ready to puke due to too much alcohol. I think the restaurant needs to cut people off before they get like this. It's in their interest to not have to clean puke from everywhere in a restroom. The mens restroom smelled a bit and was in need of a remodel. Overall: It was a fun experience and I can see myself going back and trying new things on the menu.
I dug this burger spot. Good burgers. To get four stars because I didn't think the burgers were very seasoned. But the atmosphere and the staff are awesome. They all all kinds of different Burger choices grilled cheese choices sandwiches all kinds of specialty items in sandwiches. You have to get your drinks at the bar where there is soda water or tea or lemonade or good old beer in the bartender was really quick and courteous. There's a lot of all kinds of crazy stuff on the inside which makes it comfortable to be in and keeps you interested just buy purely looking at all the stuff everywhere. It's in an easy destination in Chico with a small parking lot across the street. Check it out you won't be disappointed.

We have been coming here for years but will no longer come to watch sporting events like football. The food is good but overpriced. The manager/bar tender has been rude and unhelpful to me and my friends too many times. It's football Sunday and once again he won't put the game on the TV for our large group to watch. He does this on Thursdays too. He has lost them a lot of business. Come on it's the niners! Don't waste your time and go to Woodstocks.
College food hangout. Loud, busy, that kind of atmosphere. + Food is good. Never got sick there but it is possible here. Workers are young. Lively atmosphere. - Way too expensive. Can't understand the announcement for your order, sounds like you're at a sports stadium --- needs a new speaker or something. Super packed certain hours and orders take awhile.
I got the bacon burger and there was hardly any lettuce and tomato on it that I had asked for. I was here a couple years ago and my burger was amazing. I dont know what happened but I'd rather go to Red Robin or Applebees for a burger.
I ordered a togo, asked for two cups of water and they said they can’t give water or sell any beverages for togo orders and there was no napkins or ketchups in the order bag. I am shocked that they are so not accommodating….most restaurants provide those services. But the food was good though.
I have been to the owners' other restaurants, like Red's 395 in Carson City. This restaurant in Chico is really dirty and needs remodeling. I know ot is a college town and it has probably been beaten up for 50+ years...but it really shows. The food we had was good...Beer Cheese Burger w white sharp cheddar and pretzel bun was great. I don't like fries in general, but I tasted one of my son's curly fries and it was crispy outside and tender inside and not greasy at all! A real feat in my book! The bonesless spicy hot wings were definitely spicy, but all the fried chicken that everyone had was way over done. The breading was not thick...so the outside being overdone made the chicken hard inside too. My husband's friend graduated from Chico in early 80s, and he insisted we go. It was ok as a "one and done" place to visit in Chico because it is legendary, but I don't ever have to go back. There was a waitress who could not find the person who ordered his food - I think the name was Kevin. She called his name twice, then I saw her dumplings the food in the garbage right in front of me! (tall, stocky, rounded glasses). And she just went on like nothing was wrong! EVERYONE who has been here knows you have to order and pay for your food upfront! So some guy probably went to the restroom for 2 min and then lost his food because she was too impatient! That was crazy!
Ok food, pretty much over cooked burgers and fries... Even when you ask for medium rare. Order of 6 chicken wings is $25 with tax. Burgers are $20 Service non existent. It's self service. Bar service is good... Unless you ask for a beer that they keep in the back bar (although advertised up front), at which point they yell into a loudspeaker viamicrophone and yell for a server to bring it up.. about 5 minutes later after my date was served. Don't go in Tuesday night. They play Bingo over their extremely loud PA system, ruining your meal. Ok dive bar for college students but certainly not a place for families, kids or dates Even single adults like myself who showed up to an empty restaurant at 5:30 on a Wednesday couldn't get the manager to put the NFL Network game on just one of their 15+: televisions. 2 Stars all around. So the staff, such as bartenders and waiters awesome and kind. My issue is keith the karaoke guy. There are 2 situations that made me uncomfortable. But some of the issues i have is he is not adhd …
atmosphere good, food not so much. Burgers kinda dry, garlic fries where mediocre. Lots of college kids drinking beer, good mixed drinks at good price
In the past I have always enjoyed the unique atmosphere, good food, and service. Recently went there with a friend, ordered my food and staff was nice as usual. However, when my friend went to respectfully ask a manager a question, the manager showed no interest in listening or helping and was extremely rude and discriminating.(As my friend has autism) My friend was shocked and confused as to why he was treated this way and so was I. Then I tried to clarify what was the problem, the manager refused to corporate with simple conversation and disregard me also. This is sad and unfortunate to share this information, the staff and food have been great. The problem is offen poor management, so I recommend they find a new manager who shows respect to all people. I will no longer be going to this business until they have made improvements. Best of luck to everyone who works there. Thank you
This place has a lot of cool things to look at from wall to ceiling. I was disappointed in the food and the service. I ordered cheese fries and paid for extra cheese and had to ask for more cheese because there was a minimal amount. The girl was rude got the extra cheese and never handed me back my food just left it for another staff member to give it to me after waiting 5 min. The burger that was ordered wasn't all that and the onion rings were over cooked. This place use to be a jem and it wally disappointed me.
Grew up coming here as a child. Just moved back and went Saturday for their $1 shots and the bartender who helped me was just so unkind. Much older gentleman with just no manners, my friends and I left after the one drink… I really don’t want this experience to turn me away, but we were out for a birthday and it was just very sad… he doesn’t seem to be a people person whatsoever
Well, another adventure in finding new spots down. The food was mostly flavorless and very overcooked. Had the Papa Bear Burger. It was very well done and the onion ring (both on the burger and the side) was so overcooked I'm pretty sure the onion was actually not part of it anymore. The onion rings tasted like bland fried batter. My wife had the Bear Burger and, again, it was mostly flavorless, but at least not overcooked. We both had to add the dipping sauce found at the table on our burgers to make them more palatable. The fries were just kind of off. More importantly we suffered into the night for our decision to eat here. The burgers sat harder on the stomach than a McDonald's burger and were very angry at having been consumed. The service was more like a diner than a restaurant or even bar. We had to walk up to a hidden counter at the kitchen to order. The woman behind the counter was nice and helpful. Someone in the kitchen cranked up music just before we ordered to a volume level that rivaled the music in the customer area. The food took forever to come out, which might explain the overcooked nature, and there was no line at the counter when we ordered our after. Drinks had to be ordered at the bar and as a second charge. The guy at the bar didn't inspire confidence that he knew what kind of sodas he had and didn't bother to check. There was another guy roaming around collecting empty baskets, who did not know what the kitchen did. Most of the empty tables we found were quite messy with crumbs and small puddles of liquid. The atmosphere was busy, but fun and very eclectic. I had to wander to take it all in and would suggest the same if you stop by. Very uncomfortable seating. And the bathroom was scary old, uncomfortably tight, the women's handicap stall was locked yet empty and the other stall without a locking door, and also messy with overflowing trash cans. The floors were sticky and the decor looked to have been last dusted around 1907 when the carriages hanging from the ceiling were still new-ish. Overall, this place is for a younger crowd who wants a bar and party scene, not a cool place to get a good burger; good burger prices, bad burger experience. On the whole, don't think we'll be back.
Cool, unique atmosphere. Horrible service and extremely extremely average food. So strange to order food at one counter then having to do it again, in line, for a drink at the bar. Weird. Somehow the hamburger was not hot even though I picked it up the second my name was called. You’re definitely surviving on nostalgia and that’s about it.
The place is one of a kind! Great vibe except for the fact that they allowed some odd individual to simply walk in and out of the restaurant freely, not being a customer. The pulled pork sandwich was not the best option. It was overcooked to disguise the old meat. Crispy pork is not good unless it's bacon... cheesy fries were bland, but the strawberry lemonade was actually good. It's definitely a place to vibe out if you drink spirits.
Terrible service. I waited over an hour for a hotdog and a chicken sandwich. I was the first one I'm my party and had the smallest order and was the last one to get served. Everyone else had larg…
Pretty bland place. No ranch or other servers. Saw a cockroach on our window in the booth area. Floor and walls look like a tornado wrecked this place. I was leaving the place when I saw the owner legit steal the keys from a nearby bus just because they were parked in their lot.
My experience is specifically with eating a burger: - they have a sign next to the cashier saying "our food may contain cancerous chemicals" - The burgers are half the size of any place in the area - paying extra for a piece of cheese it was slapped onto the burger without cooking it - it took 1 hour 10 minutes from entering the place to getting a burger. I have never had a worse experience getting a burger. Won't see me back.
Since I have known this place to be the best, I ordered it on DoorDash tonight and honestly regret it!! I ordered the avocado burger…it was nasty, the bread was so soggy, the meat way undercooked and literally no avocado. A $20 burger should have been atleast edible. I couldn’t even eat it, had to throw it away…I’m not even a picky person, so this says a lot!
I hope this place closes someday or they get new management. The Male servers are super sexist towards women and have ego trips on them. I was bullied for no reason by the staff just because I was standing in the wrong place while it was busy. I was trying to stay out of the way of servers. As I was leaving was also harrassed from the Male servers for not saying goodnight. Wtfffff!!!
Went back home after being gone a few years today, took my daughter and her husband to the bear for lunch, and was excited to share a great place with them. Not so much the cashier got the order wrong for the most part the curly fries and chicken was super over cooked, the salad was a bit wilted but the burger my son in-law had was ok over cooked but ok worst hundred bucks I have spent in a long time
