I just went here today with my BF. Stopped by during the way to the beach ⛱️. I ordered tan tan ramen (L)🍜, fried chicken, green chili ramen 🍜 and I want to try the curry 🍛😋 For me, everything looks great but a little bit too salty for me. The portion of food was perfect but I ordered a large size for myself 😂 and I can't finish it. I really like the fried chicken and the curry. They had new menus for summer like sour soups ramen 🍜.
I recently visited Kitakata Ramen for lunch, and as always, it was an absolute delight. This place never fails to impress, and my latest visit was no exception. We ordered the Miso Spicy Ramen and the Umakara Tan Tan Ramen, both of which were bursting with flavor and perfectly executed. e Miso Spicy Ramen had a rich, savory broth with just the right amount of heat, while the Umakara Tan Tan Ramen was a harmonious blend of umami and a subtle kick of spice. The noodles were cooked to perfection—chewy and satisfying. We also started with the fried chicken as an appetizer, and it was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and seasoned just right. It’s the perfect way to kick off a meal here. One thing I always appreciate about Kitakata Ramen is the generous portions. There’s always plenty of food, and I often find myself taking leftovers home—though it’s hard to stop eating because everything is so delicious! I’ve been here many times, and the consistency in quality is remarkable. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it a great spot for a casual lunch or dinner. The service is always friendly and attentive, adding to the overall enjoyable experience. If you’re a ramen lover or just looking for a satisfying meal, Kitakata Ramen is a must-visit. The food keeps me coming back for more, and I’m already looking forward to my next visit!
I love coming to Kitakata Ramen. It's a light and delicious broth with soft and chewy noodles. The Karaage fried chicken is my favorite. It's big juicy pieces with a yummy dipping sauce. Don't forget to put a bit of lemon on top. 🍋 🤤 Parking in this plaza can be really tough because of the small lot and tight parking spaces. I recommend coming early and checking in on Yelp for a wait-list.
My first time having Ramen and I loved it! Look at my pictures as I pointed what I got and I highly recommend it! It was about $40 for 2 people and make sure to sign in using the tablet in front. My girlfriend loves Ramen and she said she would come back as she's pretty special with food! I'll be coming back. The service was pretty good as well! It's a pretty small place and parking can be hard to find but the cars come and go quickly so just find a spot to wait. I got the miso Ramen.
my partner said its one of the best shoyu ramen in his life (note that he has never been to japan) i got the green chili shio one really fresh and light i love it! he got the 13 pieces chashu shoyu ramen ahh the kaarage is super juicy and soft as well
Great ramen shop. One of the best in all OC. Be prepared for lines though.
Ramen for hangover! KitaKata Ramen BAN NAI has been specializing in the authentic Japanese Ramen over 30 years in Japan and it is an American outpost of the Japanese chain. There are tasty appetizers like pan fried Gyoza, crispy outside, soft & tender inside. This Gyoza is highly recommendable. Noodles have a smooth mouthfeel with a light chew. If you prefer a firmer chewy noodle, you can ask your server at ordering and he can adjust it. The soup has deep taste and is very refreshing. The flavor level of the soup can also be changed. If you prefer a milder (less salty) soup, please let the server know and the kitchen will accomodate it. It's been a few weeks, but it's the one I want to visit to eat again.
Always a great experience here. The Tonkatsu broth is amazing. Sometimes I order their spicy ramen which also has that same broth. (Pictured) The Karrage chicken is juicy and delicious. This place has been here for years, definitely check it out if you’re in the Costa Mesa area.
Been coming here for years and it is still super high quality. The pork/shoyu broth is delicate and flavorful and their signature wavy noodles have great chew. And I found out they have another location in Fountain Valley with better parking!
Usually there is a long wait to get in to dine here. So try to use the yelp waitlist online if you can. Secondly the parking lot here is too small for the number of popular restaurants inside this strip mall. I think it is worth the wait for the ramen being served. They offer tonkotsu, shoyu, shio, and miso stock ramen. Also they have a tsukemen version. Lastly they have curry rices as well. I had shio ramen and karaage. Both were quite good. Although the ramen was great the wait is not convenient. Since the seating area is small you will need to expect the wait. Have a beer at the nearby bar or restaurant while you wait is my recommendation.
Oh my goodness the best Ramen ever! Give yourself some time though because the line is always out the door. That being said they move through it pretty quickly. We've eaten here multiple times. We have gotten the Green Chili Shio Ramen, and the Kitakata Ramen. We add the egg and green onions. I prefer the Kitakata. The Fried Gyoza is so good. We also always get the Aburi Chashu Bowl. Delicious!
One of my favorite Ramen places with great service. Definitely will be back
Amazing ramen, very chill setting, super friendly staff.
Been going here for years. Very good ramen but parking and the wait can be difficult when they are busy.
Delightful ramen place - the broth was delicious, service was excellent, and the pork belly tasted very high quality. And they have gluten-free noodles! And hot sake. It's a small spot, so might be worth getting on the wait list if you want to dine in. Saw a lot of takeout orders happening. There are also other Japanese restaurants and a cute coffee shop in the same shopping center.
I have been to Japan multiple times, gone to many ramen places in CA. This is the BEST RAMEN I HAVE EVER HAD. The noodles are very chewy with a unique texture. Many people on my group thought it was the best part of the ramen. The chashu is SO GOOD it melts in your mouth and is FULL of flavor. Super tender and very rich... with the noodles it is a godsend. There is also some corn and other veggies which goes very well with the chashu and noodles. The ramen broth alone is not very rich. Since it is a soy sauce base, the ramen does get extremely salty after a while. Come here on a weekday as soon as it opens. On a Tuesday, the place was full within 20 minutes after it opened. Conclusion It is hard to describe how incredible the ramen is. It's literally divine and unlike any ramen I have ever tasted before. If ramen was a religion, this ramen would have me converted in an instant, I would be the most devout follower. I would drive here just for the ramen if it was two hours away from my house, it's really that good.
YUUUUM! Amazing ramen, great staff, fun dining experience. Kitakata is intimate and cozy. Arrive as early as you can or utilize their online wait list, because they fill up quick! Parking is tricking too. If you miss out on their lot, you can park across the street. They are 100% worth a wait and a walk though.
My go to number one ramen joint. The ramen noodles are house made and it's to the more thicker side. The chashu are really good and the fat/meat ratio is not that crazy as well. My favorite is the tsukemen and you can order them either hot or cold. Adding a side of fried chicken will be perfect for the meal. I am sooooo glad they finally have dine-in in this pandemic.
Not a big Ramen guy, but this was amazing. We can’t wait to get back and try it again. Will get photos next time.
Refreshingly light, as ramen goes. Upon our arrival at what we had thought might be an off time well after the restaurant had opened for lunch, we nevertheless joined a modest throng of two dozen would-be diners standing around outside waiting to be called. My companion assured me Bannai’s popularity was well deserved. After my first slurp, I agreed!
The food was absolutely delicious, especially the fried chicken, which had a perfectly crispy exterior and a tender, juicy inside. I don’t remember the waitress’s name, but she provided excellent service, as did the other staff member who brought our food. The wait time wasn’t bad at all—though we were initially told it would be between 13 and 20 minutes, our table was ready in just 10. I highly recommend this place!
Very polite staff and the food was delicious. Highly recommend.
I ordered via the kitakata app and had a lot of problems. This was absolutely not the locations fault (uber driver never delivered my food), but manager David and his employee Tracy made it right. I will absolutely eat at the restaurant in the future! But probably not order delivery lol.
I had an amazing experience at this ramen restaurant! The food was absolutely delicious—rich, flavorful broth, perfectly cooked noodles, and fresh, high-quality toppings. You can really taste the care that goes into every bowl. What really stood out, though, was the customer service. The staff were incredibly welcoming, attentive, and genuinely kind. From the moment I walked in until the moment I left, they made sure everything was just right. It felt like they truly cared about making sure I had a great dining experience. Whether you’re a ramen lover or trying it for the first time, I highly recommend this place. Great food, great people—I’ll definitely be coming back!
You gotta try their aburi miso ramen with green chili and egg! I actually didn’t put the green chili paste into the broth, but I topped it on every bite(?) of noodles. That way you can taste more of the spiciness & flavor of chili. The broth is very thick and flavorful. Such a great ramen place!
Amazing as always and although there is often a wait on say... a Friday night, meeting great new people is always an option while you wait!! ;) Also Rollin Deep next door makes a great ice cream if you need while you wait. Yes! I've heard grown ups are allowed to eat their dessert first 😜 Ice cream pictured is the evil stuff from next door ;)
Our family used to frequent another Ramen shop on Bristol, but the taste and quality (especially with the Low Sodium options) are tops at Kitakata.
Best ramen hands down. I’ve tried them all; Hiro Nori, Marufuku, Slurpin, etc. None compare. The green chili ramen extra spicy is superior.
A very busy spot, but once you have eaten here you will see why. The broth is delicious and not heavy and oily, the noodles are made fresh and the pork belly melts in your mouth. It's the best ramen I've had in a long while. To avoid the wait show up before they open and sign in on the clipboard outside to reserve your spot.
Great ramen a great price along with a nice variety of appetizers and rice bowls to pair with your meal. Had the kitakata ramen, aburi miso ramen, tsukemen, spicy rice, and juicy fried chicken. The kitakata ramen was simple and delicious, the aburi was much more hearty and filled with vegetables, the tsukemen was beautifully presented and the soup was rich and coated the noodles well. The juicy fried chicken appetizer was prepared well but the sesame sauce that came with it made it amazing. Had a good experience here, will come back for sure
I ordered the umakara tan tan ramen with a side of veggies to add into it, regular size. Wow! Portions were very generous! I couldn’t finish it all and brought a lot home for dinner. The broth was creamy and very tasty, everything tasted so good!! I am glad I ordered the veggies to add into it, gave it a nice embodiment to complement the creamy broth and noodles. I also ordered the fried chicken appetizer, yum! Large pieces of thighs fried to perfection, really good as well.
Best ramen in OC. love their green chili shio ramen. Been here almost 20 times and never disappoints me. Only gripe is there seems to be quite a bit of msg (expected) and the pork belly is too fatty for me. Because of this, aftertaste isn't the best.... wish they'd use some other meat but I think this is how kitakata ramen is. Personally prefer thinner charsiu on ramen though.
Great local Ramen place all the broths are flavor and not too over powering. I love spicy so their God fire broth is a way to go. everything is simple and custimizable. Ramen, gyoza, fried chicken. everything is on the dot. 5 levels of spiceness and it does get very spicy. noddles are always great i like them normal which is a good middle ground for soft and hard. enjoy
I stopped in for lunch here yesterday for the first time and O...M...G!!! I'm not kidding here, folks. I VERY rarely give five stars, and this place EASILY deserves it. I've been to Japan twice, and this may be even better than the food that I got there! This is one of those restaurants where, when you are bringing a bite of food up to your mouth, the aroma that hits your nose tells you that you are about to eat something extraordinary. Michelin should really come by and award a star in my opinion. Hands down the best chashu I've ever had! Tru the shishito peppers too...quite tasty. I will definitely be back!!!!
Definitely one of our favorite ramen places so far. Came here for the Dan Dan noodle special, flavor was really on point, only thing I'd change is I'd drop the bean sprouts next time, since their crunchy texture is in conflict with the chewy texture of the noodles (it's almost impossible to get a bite of noodle without bean sprouts). Shishito peppers and Takoyaki were perfect *chef's kiss*
Flavor town. I ordered the cubed chashu bowl and it was probably one of the best Japanese rice bowls I’ve ever had. Chashu bits simmered in a sweet and spicy soy base over a bed of Japanese short grain rice was heavenly. Not to mention, the onsen egg (perfectly cooked) added just the right amount of creaminess to the dish 🤌
Online order was ready right when I arrived. The team at this location is amazing, they work in such a small space with people coming in and out and always are so happy and polite. It’s a nice place to have a warm meal.
Best Ramen I’ve ever had. Chashu Ramen - 13 slices of pork?! Was unheard of so I had to order. The pork slicked were thick. The broth was tasty and refreshing. Ordered with a topping of egg ($1). Fried chicken - didn’t have any expectations but was pleasantly surprised how good it was. It was very crispy and the side sauce was a nice compliment. Would I go again? Definitely. If I get the fried chicken again, I would have to share the ramen because i was so full.
AWESOME best Japanese ramen i have ever tried in the US. Its soup is not as thick or greasy like other places. it's very light in grease but full of flavor. JUST PERFECT!! its steamed pork is also a delicacy! Try it! also none of those disgusting pork smell~ The noodle was so chewy. I tried both hot and cold basic noodle soup. I liked them both. Very reasonable price!! There are a lot of people in lines though, so if you don't like waiting, avoid busy hours! Happy Eating~
I think this is the best ramen in so cal, it could compete with any of the places in LA for sure. always great and fast service once you're in. though the lines are always long, it's totally with the wait. they make there own noodles and they're delicious, broth is tonkatsu style, and the chasu pork is very tender and flavorful.
Went on a Sunday and it took about 45 minutes to get seated since the place is so small and popular. The food was cooked perfectly. The Juicy Fried Chicken was amazingly delicious and heightened even more with the lemon slice they provide. I got the Aburi Miso Ramen and I was not disappointed! Each component of the bowl came through so beautifully and before I knew it the whole bowl was gone! The staff is great, too! I was a bit of a klutz and spilled a drink and they took care of it promptly! It's a lovely place with tasty food and wonderful staff.
Finished shopping in SCP, spent a fortune and got hungry & tired. What’s the cure? Ramen nearby! Only less then 10 mins away, and it was recommended by a friend born and raised in OC, it can’t go wrong. Ramen was great and food aside, the service is one of the best I’ve ever had, cheers!
The freshly-made noodles are fantastic, with a seductive softness and the right amount of chew. Broth is flavorful as well. The Aburi Miso Ramen is wonderful, but I recommend kicking it up a notch with the Umani Chili (a paste of dried chili, sesame and seaweed) if you are into spicy food. The Green Chili Shio Ramen is very clean and unctuous, supposedly spicy but I got more heat from the white/black pepper than the shredded green chili itself. The juicy fried chicken is a must have; it is true to its name and super juicy. About the service: Somehow our order of fried chicken appetizer didn't make it into the POS. Not only did they apologize profusely, the chicken came pretty quickly and they gave each of us a free Yuzu sorbet! That is the sign of a good restaurant, they took responsibility for the error and made sure customers leave happy. Highly recommended!
I've been here twice so far and I really like it. Probably the best ramen I've had in OC, albeit I haven't had much. I get there right before 11 when they open so you don't have to wait for lunch. Ramen is decently priced and at lunch they have free white rice or $0.50 spicy rice which is great. Green Chile ramen is great
Ordered take out for a family of 4. The food was packaged well for travel. We had gyoza, fried chicken and Chashu ramen with seasoned eggs. Everything was quite delicious.
This ramen shop is a true local favorite! Though small, the space is perfectly cozy and efficiently organized, creating a warm atmosphere. The food is consistently the main attraction—always delicious, perfectly prepared, and offered at a very reasonable price point, making it an incredible value. Beyond the fantastic bowls, the service is outstanding. The staff is remarkably efficient and expeditious, even with new team members, and they genuinely ensure every single customer leaves happy. This spot nails the perfect balance of great food, great value, and great service. Highly recommended!
Excelente servicio y deliciosa comida. De sus especialidades probamos Aburi Miso Ramen con huevo adicional y Chashu Ramen con extra de algas. Todo delicioso. Es un lugar popular así que la lista de espera puede ser larga. Vale la pena!
Me gusto muchísimo
Muy buena comida
Kitakata never disappoints when it comes to their ramen. The quality of their ramen is always a 10/10. I've been coming here religiously for the past 8 years whenever I visit Orange County. My go to ramen is the green chili shio ramen. I love that the broth is light and it has a kick from the fresh green chili. I like it extra spicy since I like the burn so I would ask for extra of the green chili. Their chashu is always a nicely sliced even layer and if you're big on meat, they have a ramen option to get more meat (chashu ramen). I also really like the texture of their ramen. It's flat and thicker than normal ramen noodles. I feel like today's service was kind of slacking a bit. They forgot our extra chili that we ordered and when asking for extra napkins, they forgot about it. Parking is limited when it gets busy and during rush hour, there will be a wait time so make sure to join the waitlist on yelp if you're in the area before arriving to cut down on wait time.
We joined the waitlist and the staff was new they missed us for more than 1hr. We need come reminding them. The food was worth of waiting, I specially like the noodle, it’s not at every ramen shop to have. The noodle size is a little bit bigger, but it was al dente cooked, even it stayed long in the broth, it didn’t soften itself.
Came here to try the Kitakata style of ramen and wasn’t disappointed. Very tasty broth and ramen was just right.
Small ramen location of a large chain. You start with a basic ramen lacking the seasoned egg and seaweed. By the time you add these options in, the basic tonkotsu ramen is close to $20. While the flavor is good, it is more expensive because if the nickel and diming with the options. The green tea tea bag here is $3.75 each, while Ai Restaurant charges $0.95 for the same.
If you are planning to try this.. Arrive 30 minutes before it opens otherwise Expect long waits. Really small parking lot for the complex. We were 2 people and went on a wednesday at 11 to avoid the wait, but still jad yo wait an hour. We ordered the juicy chicken and two ramens. Everything was just okay, it tastes good but not wait for an hour good.
I love the ramen here. Kitakata ramen is pork based broth with shoyu flavor. The broth is light and the ramen is not too soft. I ordered the extra chasu one. Thus it's called Chasu Ramen. The picture is for Chasu Ramen with green chili paste to enhance the flavor since I love spicy food.
Great food. I took my girlfriend tonight and was very satisfied with the ramen. Surprised that this place is stuck in a small strip mall. My only gripe is how small it is and how loud it gets. Felt a little rushed to order. I get it though. It's so small that they need you to get in and get out. I wish this place well. Well enough that they can move to a bigger location. Wanted to have a nice dinner and have a nice conversation with my love, but this isn't that type of place. Go for a quick bite of Ramen goodness. Don't expect to take a date, relax and enjoy the meal though. Use their Yelp wait-list. It's small and even at 6pm on Friday there was a short wait. Parking is bad. Super small spots and it was full. If you have a big truck or SUV, don't bring it!
One of the best ramen places I've been to in socal! Their broth is full of flavor and not just salty like other places. The tsukemen is amazing! The broth is nutty and rich, I could just drink it alone. The aburi miso ramen is more intense flavor. The noodles have a great chew to it. Only thing I didn't like was the chashu, it had a very strong soy sauce flavor which is to salty for my taste. The egg was also a let down as it was more of a hard boiled egg than a soft boiled egg. Overall the broth and the noodles are that great to overlook the negatives!
We arrived around 6:30pm and there was already a line. They said that it would be about a 25 minute wait. It went pretty fast and I'm glad we waited. The ramen was pretty good. Actually the noodles were very good. The broth was a bit different than what I'm used to and I found the chasu to have a bit too much fat but overall it was good. We also tried the Juice Fried Chicken and that was good as well, especially with their sauce. Service was quick and the staff were very attentive. Next time I have to try their gyoza.
Good place to try ramen. Many different styles of ramen that are well prepared and flavorful. Efficient and professional staff that will serve you well and make your experience positively memorable.
Solid go-to spot for authentic ramen! Before the pandemic I’ve always heard of the long lines... now they have a good system with online ordering directly on the website. I just wish there were better descriptions of each dish. For the foot itself: the ramen has the perfect chew (I ordered the fresh uncooked noodles and cooked them at home). 🍜 The broth was a bit too salty for me and the chasu was extremely fatty/thin. But I ended up pan frying and it was delicious. The star of my meal was the fried chicken appetizer. So so good and must order! 🍗
Muy Rica la comida, siempre hay mucha gente
Food and staff were amazing, seemed like a busy night and everyone was doing their best to provide great service. Now for the atmosphere... Seems like ownership needs to make a visit during business hours. Had a woman next to me get her beer taken off her tab due to all the glasses designated for alcohol were already in use. Why are you not providing enough dishware for your staff to serve their customers? Alcohol is an great product to boost business sales, and your management team should be aware of that. By not providing proper dishware for serving alcohol, and in turn denying sales because of it, you are killing your profit. Since you don't seem to care about the well being of your employees, care about your sales and the people who pay to keep your doors open. Hope everyone there gets tipped well, and gets more dishware for their dinner service.
I had relatively high expectations however the type of noodles caught me off guard. It wasn't ramen, or at least ones that I'm used to eating and loving. It has less substance and is filled with more empty/wasted space which I think was water. Broth was okay and meat was slightly in the salty side. Service and ambiance was great though, still I come for the food so couldn't give it more than 3 stars.
I ordered to go only a snack, goyza. Much smaller than the photo on menu, but ok, I would recommend trying a regular dish instead. They were pretty busy so it's a popular place. Person at the front was very friendly and helpful so that's a plus.
Out of 5 Cleanliness 3 Service 0 Food 3 Atmosphere 2 Price 3 I wish I had better things to say about this place considering the amazing reviews it has. When we first got there, the wait was thirty minutes (I don’t mind). While waiting, I asked for a menu, the host frowned at me and says: yeah, sure. I guess you can take this one. And then proceeds to let me know that there is a menu outside. So I leave the menu and look at the outside menu instead. Once seated, the table and menus were still crusty… there was still crumbs of food on our table. That host… I don’t know if he’s a new trainee or what but he did not know how to be a good server. They never refilled our waters and when I asked, he reached over the end of the table and motioned with two fingers for me to hand him my cup. He then disregarded the rest of our table and I had to share my water with a friend. My order was forgotten. Twice. Everyone else got their food and then two waiters came by to ask if everyone had their food. We informed them, twice that I did not. By the time my food came out, everyone else was done. Also, my friend said the noodles were clumpy but the broth is good. Your karaage is the one thing that semi redeems you. I will not come back ban nai. Your food is mediocre and service horrendous. Thanks but no thanks.
Staffs are friendly, however the noodles and fried chicken are over cooked. And the taste is on the salty side, not much flavor in the broth.
Exceptional ramen, unfortunately the place is just too small for comfort. Feels like your shoulder to shoulder with the table next to you. Especially when there’s a party of 8 which takes up 40% of the space. The restaurant needs to consider relocating.
My husband and I ate here tonight. We were disappointed in the meal. We sat at a dirty table. The floor was filthy. It was not busy at all. It took 10 minutes after we sat down before we were asked what we wanted to drink. The servers just stood in the middle of the restaurant where the kitchen is. After bringing us our food, no one ever asked if we needed anything or how our meal was. We had to ask for our check. It as strange because the place is tiny. The service was not bad, it was nonexistent. I ordered the Kitakata Ramen. It has 5 thin pieces of pork, which is the best part of the meal. The broth smells strange. The noodles are chewy and flavorless. The bamboo pieces have a bad flavor. My husband ordered the Juicy Fried Chicken Bowl. It was a mix of white and dark meat. Though his meal was slightly better than mine, we still did not like the flavor. The best part of his meal was the steamed rice. I gave this place one star because it was open. I gave it a second star because the food looks good. We were excited to eat here before we tasted the food. As long as you don’t plan on putting it in your mouth, it is fine.
imagine spending a bunch of money on their food for delivery and the messed your order up. Now you have to drive all the way back to their restaurant and they make you feel like you're in the wrong...
It was great until something happened 2-3 years ago. Noodle is sagy- saw they washing noodles in cold water to separate noodles that was stick together. N broth was salty n no flavor. What is going on? I'm sure anybody making foods in there, they never had Japanese Ramen before or zero experience. Shame shame shame.
