Delicious food and a really good service

Based on ambience alone this place deserves five stars. The nineteenth century interior is really not to be missed, as is the famous bullet hole in the ceiling left by Pancho Villa. But the food and very professional service were equally five star worthy. We got the caracoles al chipotle, the molcajete, and fantastic enchiladas verdes, and everything was just amazing. I'll definitely go back one afternoon just to have a drink at the beautiful bar.

My friend said that his grandfather put a bullet in the ceiling in the 1920s. If you can find the bullet hole, please post a picture! It's a famous old cafe from the era where they were trying to look like Paris, and it's the best place for a drink and a rest while walking from the Xocaló to the fine arts museum

You must try ! This establishment has been here forever, even Porfirio Diaz used to be a regular ! Staff is so professional and attentive and the food was great.

Very attentive service, the place is so beautiful and welcoming. Food was great. We took our time to order and the server was very polite with recommendations. We are definitely going back!

We really enjoyed our dinner here - Mario provided excellent service - he spoke excellent English which helped us out and had lots of patience to let me work things out in Spanish. The enchiladas were very good and the flan and my Manhattan were excellent. There was live entertainment at the table next to us - it was a very enjoyable evening 😊

Delicious food, fantastic service, the best restaurant in our trip to Mexico City! It was a dream to go and sit in the best seat in the house, right under Pancho Villa's historical bullet hole! The service was so amazing and the food was honestly WOW! LOVED IT!

Awsome place with good drinks and food. The octopus a la Gallega and the Tartar meat were excellent. Prices are decent and service is good. Located in the historic downtown of Mexico City.

Despite the poor reviews I have to say that this is actually a very good budget option. For 199 pesos you have an unlimited menu of about 6 dishes. We each had a fried fish and shared a prawn tostada and another prawn dish. The food was decent enough - you get what you pay for. We were encouraged to order more but was full after what we had. Total bill for two including beers was 500 pesos. Excellent value. We paid in cash.

We came here in May after our walking tour guide suggested it, since it has been visiting by various famous people throughout time. We ordered sopa de medula, salad and an order of tlacoyos. Staff was friendly, attentive and hapoy to make suggestions or give you a mini history lesson of the place. It was a good lunch spot and some menu items do rotate.

Had better food many other places in CDMX, but still perfectly good and more for the beautiful atmosphere and design. Note that the tacos are more like taquitos if you care for that differentiation. Very nice service

I asked for parrillada, I love it 🥰 the meat was delicious and my husband ordered lengua other Mexican dishes which was amazing. Ask for artesanal beer, the perfect drink. ☺️

Went for drinks, missing beers from the menu, poorly made Bloody Mary. The ceiling is special, ornate and gilded with gold in this old school establishment, but beyond that rather pedestrian.

We had the chicken tacos and enchiladas de mole. The chicken tacos were more flutas than tacos. But the tacos were tasty. The mole was too sweet for our liking. The main reason for the lower food rating was the bug I found in my drink. All the food was either good or great.

This is a highly rated restaurant in Mexico's historic district. The place is beautiful and the food is well prepared but the appetizer of cheese and ham was not up to par.

We had a great time there! It was such a beautiful old world favor inside with the detailed painting and architectural details. Live Mexican music and all. The fried red snapper was a little dry, but maybe ask them to fry it less time. The onion soup was different than was expected, but tasted good. The Caeser salad was good. We didn't try their beef dishes. The prices were reasonable. Maybe the red snapper was a little high from what we have been paying.

Late night stop in at the bar for food and a drink. Beautiful setting in a classic old building, but very sad boiled, tasteless vegetable medley, a poorly constructed old-fashioned. The saving grace was the ahi tostada which was fresh and balanced . Uninspired but nice if you want to enjoy the ambience of a beautiful building. .

Wandered into La Opera on Avenida 5 de Mayo to have a well deserved cold beer on a hot Sunday afternoon. Had great expectations from this historic place. But the disappointment hit as soon as I sat at the bar. The total indifference and apathy from the bar tenders was such a turn off I felt like getting up and leaving. I was an entertainer for years and the bar business/ staff attitude towards customers is what carries a place regardless of location or decor. I made a comment to myself " do they have service here" and the local gentleman sitting next to me reached out to the indifferent bartender and told him to please take care of the señorita. Yes. Client intervention in CDMX. As a regular traveler to this vibrant city it's the first time I experience bad service at any place anytime. I have no intention of returning to La Opera on my next trip or sitting at one of the fancy tables for food. Not worth it. Adios amigos. I know better places to go while in this amazing city.

Terrible

The interiors are terrible. Toilets are grim. We saw the “all you can eat” promo from outside and came in. You can only have each of 4 items once. So, we got half cold French fries, two tiny chicken wings with feathers that smelled like burnt feathers, 4 small squares of pork on a bone and something else we could not even name. Not impressed

We were attracted to sitting in a second story bar to drink cervesa and watch people in the Centro Historico area. We got the nachos con carne and the meat was mostly gristle. Not very appealing.

I was overcharged for a drink here

A
Angelica Cobb

Ordered 6 beers. Brought in a bucket with no ice. Never came back to the table. Then tried to charge 50 pesos more ‘for service’. We had to open our own beers. Smh. One guy has been passed out at the table since we got here. And at least 4 guys fall asleep at their tables. And kept serving… If you’re in a bind for entertainment and to get out of the cold come with exact change.

They overcharge tourists and the experience was very unpleasant. Bathroom was gross, beers came out half filled after I asked the sizes and they told me there is only one size (other tables had full glasses). They charged 5x what other bars charged and expected a 25% tip.

R
Ruben D Urena

Asked for a tequila and then a Johnnie Walker Black which was watered down. The JB did not looked or taste like a scotch, definitely altered!! I had to throw it out. Both overpriced!!! Tourist trap😪

M
Melanie Canuel

Be careful!! Make sure you ask the price before ordering anything!! Definitely ripped us of with 200 pesos half full plastic cup beer and asked for tip aggressively. Tourist trap!

T
Teo Ekstrom

Nachos have no cheese and are just covered with mayonnaise and cold beef crumbles. Margherita had the salt stirred in and was also watery... The toilets had no toilet seats. They secretly added a 15% tip, and asked for another one...legit felt scary when I said no. I cannot recommend this restaurant.

O
Omar CHAVEZ

Servers are kind and attentive. Beer tasted stale and prices were oversized. Food was OK but still expensive and bland.

K
Kris Zarate

SCAMMERS, DO NOT GO!! They over charge tourists vs locals, they also charged my credit card twice after they told us their credit card machine was not working and told us to pay cash. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME AND HASSLE… ALL TOURIST SHOULD AVOID THIS PLACE!!!!

J
J Argueta

BEWARE THEY WILL OVERCHARGE YOU!! Get your wallet ready to be ripped off. 👎🏽

Food mediocre.I think this is an overated restaurant. I had paella valenciana; the rice was a bit watery and lacked flavor. My daughter had fettuccine alfredo which looked like a lake of white sauce flavored with fake cheese. My husband and son each had a fideo seco dish which was just ok. I should have followed my instincts when I first saw the menu. But the service was fine, and so were the waiters.

I am deeply disappointed by my recent experience . I witnessed a disturbing situation where a blind man, accompanied by his guide dog, was denied entry into the establishment. This is not only a violation but also a lack of basic empathy and respect for individuals with disabilities.

Anna Walker
Anna Walker

They hid my little tacos in a kilo of lettuce. They were the size of my finger. They didn’t bring us forks and there was no music or atmosphere. The soft drinks and water were mini sized and no one came to see if something was needed. Very expensive for what it is. There are many better restaurants in the city center where you can eat better. The ceiling was beautiful but the booths were giving “grandma’s haunted bedroom set”
