The Olive Branch Edinburgh Reviews
Absolutely charming eatery! We were made most welcome by the lovely staff. We'd had a disappointing evening up until we'd stepped across the threshold, so the Olive Branch was our "plan B" but ended up being five star across the board. From the get go, the staff were friendly and professional. Delightful original menu. We both opted for local dishes; local bass, and a dish of chicken thigh, scallop and black pudding bombe. DELICIOUS!!!!! Finished with a local cheese cheeseboard and a port. Sensational!!! It's is wonderful to find an intimate, independent eatery a little off the well- worn track, that delivers such exemplary service and food. Well done everyone! We plan to return!
Want a hunger busting breakfast recommendation? Head to @olivebranchbistro on Broughton Street 🫒 Superb staff 😃, fabulous coffees ☕️, massive beautiful plates of breakie scrumptiousness🍳 and a window seat in the sunshine 🌞 Sundays done right!
Delicious food and fall cocktails, only complaint is the midges that swarmed the table from the wall next to the bar (our table was under the light)
Been meaning to leave a review for this place but just never got around to it. My girlfriend and I came here back in the winter and thought it was lovely. Very friendly service, food and atmosphere. Also a generous portion of brunch! Will come again when we are next in Edinburgh!
The food here was SO good! We had the fish & chips, the soup of the day (carrot and lentils), the steak, and the fried broccoli. The fried broccoli was amazing, wish I could eat that a million times over. The steak was mediocre but the fish and chips were really good. Staff was friendly but a bit slow. Wasn’t very busy when we went. I got the tequila sunset, that was really good.
This was our first meal in Edinburgh and it did not disappoint!!! Our waitress was extremely helpful and even helped my wife find a place to go do her eyelashes and eyebrows! While we ate, she looked up a bunch of different places and gave her like three or four different recommendations so she definitely went above and beyond! We had the Haggis, which was absolutely amazing and we were also introduced to Irn Bru which is a MUST try if you’re in Scotland! everything we ate was delicious. Would highly recommend this place to anyone!!!
Amazing food! Amazing service! Can't wait till we can come back for more!
Fantastic spot for lunch. Loved the chicken club and the cucumber cooler drink. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming and we would definitely come back again.
Very nice place for brunch. All the food was very good, definitely recommend the potato rosti. The poach eggs were perfectly cooked as well. Definitely a must go for some food. Not a massive place though but waiting a bit is good.
Had a nice relaxing dinner with friends while visiting recently in Edinburgh. The goat cheese on sourdough grilled cheese with fig and apple was superb!
Just what we wanted for lunch. Delicious soup of the day with plenty of bread. We also had fantastic tempura broccoli and a decent bowl of chips. Glass of red wine on a cold day. Lovely service too. Lots of choice on the menu and the Scottish breakfasts looked huge!
Tasty food, nice and welcoming service and dog friendly, at least we were welcomed with our dog 🐕
It was our first gastronomic stop on Edinburgh, so we went for the classic fish and chips, it was delicious, fish was very crunch outside and soft inside. We tried the dark chocolate cheesecake and I have no words to how delicious it was.
Lovely restaurant on broughton street in Edinburgh, so many food options, staff are so lovely and accommodating! Food is delicious, drink options and indoor, outdoor seating options 🤍 will defo go back and try it out for dinner next time!
I try to visit the Olive branch on a monthly basis because their menu for breakfast and brunch is completely gorgeous. I'm super fan of the Rosti, but I have also tried the French toasts, pacifico eggs and the porridge. Everything is delicious! Good coffee as well. I have been also recommended to try their menu for dinner, well noted. This last time there was a Spanish waitress that was absolutely lovely, but I can say that all the staff are great!
Absolutely amazing food. Ordered the lamb shoulder and the flavor was out of this world. So good. Cheesecake was also very smooth and light
Haven't had such an excellent dinner in ages! The atmosphere is very nice and comfortable. Staff is very nice and professional. Can only recommend! Give the waiters a good tip ;) Would recommend to book a place for the evening.
Not sure my photo does it justice but the brocoli tempura was delicious and the Thai panang curry was as good as in Thailand! Very friendly staff.
An amazing brunch. We will definitely be back.
We went here for a office lunch party from Lloyds Bank. We enjoyed the food and ambience. It was a great fun.
Fantastic breakfast menu. I had the potato rosti but I couldn’t decide whether to have smoked bacon, haggis or black pudding so they gave me all three!
First class food and excellent service. The staff were lovely & very welcoming. Would highly recommend a visit here!!
Excellent food selection, nice atmosphere and friendly staff... recommend the beer battered fish and chips 👍
My husband and I popped in on a Sunday night without a reservation. They clearly went out of their way to accommodate us on a busy evening. Shortly after we ordered my husband was not feeling well. I hated to inform them after the appetizers were set that we had to leave. they were so gracious. Apps were delicious and they understood that we are human and things happen. Excellent service.
Incredibly nice staff!! And great food with cute and beautiful presentation. Went for lunch and took 6 starters/small plates as a group of 4. Fantastic! Haggis, squid especially exquisite. Thank you!
We had the most wonderful experience at The Olive Branch this evening. Despite being very busy nothing was too much trouble for the staff who were warm and welcoming. The food was absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. We will definitely be returning soon!
Soup was good but the beef brisket sandwich was amazing.
We just happened upon the Olive Branch, but we're glad we did. The food was inventive and incredibly flavorful. We loved all of our meals & would go back in a heartbeat.
Introduced to the Olive Branch via my partner. The owner and staff are all really friendly and you're instantly made to feel welcome. Had several meals here from the brunch to the evening menu, its obvious that the ingredients are well sourced, the menu is amazing and the food is so tasty. Have and will recommend 😊
Loved it. Food great. Service efficient and friendly. Would definitely recommend.
Lovely place in Edinburgh! Really good food, really nice coffee and really friendly service! Would recommend anything with haggis, especially the potato rosti!
Very accomodating when I made last minute change to booking, added one more diner. Price/quality well balanced. Friendly attentive staff, not rushed. Don't think you can ask for more.
Pre booked for Christmas Sunday brunch, visited yesterday and all 6 of us had house breakfasts, with individual requests. The food was beautiful, service fantastic and whole experience faultless. Top marks.
Had a relaxed brunch. Good location, central but not too busy. We had brunch. Food was great, highly recommend
Delicious meal here yesterday evening. Lovely atmosphere and quaint little cosy place. Staff very attentive and pleasant and super friendly. Accommodated my dietary needs very well.
We booked a table at 930pm and the restaurant closed at 10pm. As it was end of the day it was empty and no ambience of dining. The waitresses were lovely and knowledgeable. I was disappointed with the food despite the sound of the small plates. I had Vegetable Gyoza which was over cooked and too oily and crispy. The sweet chilli dip was like tomato ketchup. The squid, guacamole and siracha was good however after a few eaten it was very salty. The goats cheese and fig on sourdough was average. The fig was overwhelming and too much. I think the waitress was not dressed appropriately for a restaurant ie denim shorts
Very nice restaurant, good food, great wine and lovely staff. I'll start with desert, I had a chocolate bread and butter pudding. I thought there was too much sauce but it was just the right amount. Wine was lovely.
Three of us sat outside in the sunshine and enjoyed the smoked salmon sandwich (x2) and special salad. Lovely food, good service... You can't beat outdoor eating and drinking in the sunshine in glorious Edinburgh..
A good option for date night if you want a decent meal in a decent restaurant but don’t want to spend a fortune. Service was a bit odd - maybe training new people this time but not a spoiler. Not the first time I’ve had to help somebody open a bottle of wine.
Popped in for brunch for 4 this morning. The food (full breakfasts and eggs Benedict) was excellent and reasonably priced. Arrived on hot plates. Good friendly service and would definitely revisit
The service was a bit slow here. We ordered a few drinks to have before the actual meal, but the drinks did not arrive for 30 mins. So we basically sat there till the 40th minute when the food arrived. Had to cancel the prosecco because it was meant to be had before the meal. It was still included in the bill and I had to request they take it off. Though service was slow, the food was good.
Tried this as a couple as we were in the area, staff were friendly, nice decor. Had the two courses for £12 option, which was ok-ish value, not a massive choice though. Between us we had the pate and bread starters, and chicken and beef burger for a main. Although nothing to complain about, the food was nothing to rave about either. And a minor niggle, in the menu they had Innis and Gunn Rum Cask which I ordered, but they actually served Blood Red Sky- same brewery but a different beer (albeit it has rum cask on the label, so perhaps easily done but you would think a venue serving food and drink for a living would get this right).
We visited OB last year during the festival and had a truly enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, this year's visit was a letdown. The restaurant felt unclean—from the floors to the toilets and even the water jars, which looked quite unpleasant. The food was greasy and lacked flavor. While the staff were generally friendly, the service wasn’t as attentive as before, and one woman at the bar looked especially grim. Prices have gone up since our last visit, but sadly, the overall quality has gone down. We’re not sure what changed, but it’s disappointing considering how much we loved it last year.
The risotto was only passable, but miserly in portion. Other dishes similarly small. Desserts were also only ok. Very pricey, yes, I know it's Edinburgh, but why be mean with veg? One broccoli spear per person?
Lovely food in terms of taste & presentation and a nice atmosphere, service was poor as a few others have pointed out (one waiter chatting at the bar and forgetting about us multiple times, we had to ask for cutlery/dessert menu/go up to the counter for bill). A shame as I can understand that with better service you’d definitely want to come back here!
Was really looking forward to this meal. The fries came with Cajun spice on, the staff did not ask about dietary requirements and it did not mention on the menu that there was anything extra on the fries, when they arrived we let the staff know that one of our party had an allergy and the waitress told us we should let her know before. Which I found pretty rude. Don't think the cost was worth the service.
We stopped in for a quick breakfast, but what got was some of the slowest and most disorganised service I`ve experienced in a long time. The staff seemed to have plenty of time to chat at the bar, but simple tasks - like brining a sauce for our breakfast - took so long that we had practicallyfinished our food by the time it arrived. Getting the bill and paying also took an eternity. Beyond the frustraring service, the restaurant enviroment was disappointing. The space felt grim and dirty, and the tables were packed so closely together that it was genuinely difficult to slide in or even leave without bumping into other diners. While the food itself was good (the only positive of our visit), the rest of the experience was extremely poor. To top it all off, a service charge was included on the bill. Im happy to pay for good service, but frankly, given poor experience we had, I would honestly prefer self-service to the "service " we received.
I don’t usually write reviews, but having been here before and knowing how good it used to be, I felt I should share our recent experience. The food was nice, though a bit pricey for what you get. The real issue was the service. The staff were loudly chatting about their personal lives, which made the atmosphere uncomfortable. They also didn’t seem confident about the wine or some of the ingredients and had to keep going back to the kitchen to check. Compared to our last visit, the service has dropped a lot, and it seems others have noticed the same. The toilets could also be cleaner. Sadly, the service on this visit is enough to put us off coming back
We went to The Olive Branch on Sunday morning at 9:45, knowing they opened at 10, so we waited outside. At 10:00, we politely asked if they were open, but the girl preparing to open replied with an annoyed attitude that they would open “soon.” While we were waiting, we also saw the waitress brushing her hair over the tables — I don’t know about you, but I personally find that quite unhygienic. When they finally opened, we walked in, and with the same unpleasant tone she told us not to sit down and to go to the counter first to check if we had a reservation. She then gave us a table outside and even told us to set up our own tables and chairs. My father, upset by the level of disrespect, decided we should leave. Unfortunately, the poor attitude, lack of basic hospitality, and questionable hygiene completely ruined the experience before it even began.
-Servers failed to check if we were happy with our meal. - Had to voice dissatisfaction with food to server, however, no comment or feedback from the kitchen. - ok food, not well balanced flavours. - Not asked if we would life any other drink. - Blanked for removing service charge, however, service charge is for good service (something we didn’t receive). Generally poor food, service and over priced for what was provided. It is fair to say I felt ripped off. The food wasn’t the most expensive, however, when you receive somewhat poor food and service then it is easy to feel like you’ve been let down.
