The DownTowner Fort Lauderdale Reviews
Review from a non local! Riverside seating and views made our meal delicious and fun. Ordered the mahi fish tacos with Spanish fried rice, sirloin steak tacos, shrimp cocktail appetizer, and Lauderdale Brewery Coconut Porter. Everything was delicious! Hot and fresh. Absolutely delectable. The coconut porter was very interesting; tasted like a Guinness with coconut. Service was wonderful and very attentive. Our server was excellent and was very knowledgeable of the menus. Family friendly restaurant. I really loved the water views. Everything was nice already but the waterside seats made it just more fun. Highly recommend!
The kitchen actually was slow, but we were fine with it. Our waitress (Sharia sp?) was professional and lovely. Our meals were fine, but nothing exceptional. However, with drinks, seating canal side, and great weather, altogether made for a memorable day. Free parking behind the restaurant.
Always a classic in Fort Lauderdale! Come sit by the water enjoy the views and whole Fort Lauderdale vibe. Food is great and you can waste hours away enjoying cocktails and the locals. I got the Famous Fish and Chips and the breading was amazing. Tasted very fresh, my wife got the poke bowl. I had a bite of the clam chowder and it was delicious!!! Friendly staff!
My Hamburger was great with the Bacon jelly! We ate right on the water. Captain Bob recommended we came here and he was spot on! He was our Captain on the free water taxi. Our waiter was Ray. OK this guy's eyes .... wow! Ok in all seriousness he was so nice and friendly and communicated with us on our meal status often. Top notch service. I would definitely agree with Captain Bob on this one. Go here!
It was the perfect ambiance for a surprise birthday party and staycation combined! Our waitress Lindsey was very attentive to be sure we were all pleased with our selections. The shrimp taco was the winner dining choice. Get there early, like 4:00 p.m if you want a table on the water. Live steel drum music, what a nice happy atmosphere. Please add gluten free option on dessert menu! 😋😋😋
Superb! If overeating wasn’t a sin I would surely get another chicken and waffle to go! Then again I wouldn’t want to mess up the pretty presentation, the scrumptious waffle, the tender flavorful chicken in a to go box. This gives me perfect reason to drop in for brunch again 😘 The portion size-insane, flavor profile- mouthwatering, just get the dish, you won’t be disappointed. After chatting with the proprietor, today, 4/28 was their first brunch in 4yrs because….yea, Covid. I couldn’t have dropped in at a more perfect time. After wrapping up 4 events that week, this floral designer needed ambiance and food. The Downtowner, keep rocking those amazing dishes and service…shout out to Matthew my server!!! I’ll be back.
This is one of my favorite lunch spots in Fort Lauderdale. You can dine right on the new river and watch the million dollar yachts go by. The service is exceptional. The food is delicious. The views are amazing.
Gathered her for dinner and to celebrate my niece’s White Coat ceremony a couple of hours before dusk. Seating is available inside, outside, and outside across the street along the river. Dined along the water, there were a few annoying flies and we fanned a lot. I ordered the fried meatballs and conch fritters, they both were tasty. Wanted to know about parking and when so phoned ahead, no one answered the phone. Paid $3 for an hour of public parking, my brother then said there was lots of free parking behind the restaurant. Lots of motor boats quietly sailed by and the condos, other buildings, and activities across the river made for a nice view. This place is a nice place to gather after work for a cold one.
More like a sports bar, but we had a dinner when ot started to rain. And it was all good! This is typical american sports bar with lots of screens woth all kinds of sports. It is near the river, so if you sit oitside you can watch ships running besides.
We came for the boat viewing and they had great Sunday drink specials and good food! We even saw a boat we were going to buy a few years ago pass by. Relaxing environment and great reminder of why we live here! Been here for several private events as well in the Maxwell room in the back.
Came here with family from Minnesota to cheer on the Vikings today! Delicious food, excellent service and very friendly and accommodating staff! Great menu selection and drink specials! Beautiful place in the New River with outdoor seating! Relaxing afternoon with family & friends!!!
Daryll had us at hello! Saw a group of women leaving a tiki boat and on our brief rest back to our vehicle, he approached us and asked if we needed to use the ladies room. Well, that led to us being seated, ordering, eating, and getting to know Daryll quite well! He made our visit to Fort Lauderdale much more enjoyable! He was very courteous and personable! Almost thought he was the owner! Feels good to get Great food, Great service, and to have an amazing and awesome employee representing this restaurant! Hopefully I didn't jack up the spelling of his name! We were the group of ladies celebrating Bachelorette Weekend and Motherhood! If you're ever in that area of New River Road and need a nice view while dining outdoors, stop at the Downtowner and ask for Daryl! You won't be disappointed!
Great place to pull up your boat and enjoy some oysters and a drink. Seating inside and outside. I recommend you coming to what I believe is the oldest restaurant in Ft Lauderdale?. Friendly and helpful staff . Dog friendly.
The DownTowner is a great bar and restaurant overlooking the Las Olas New River and the Andrews draw bridge. It a great place to Yacht see and get a cold brew. I really enjoy the entire menu and lean toward their Jack Burger. They use quality meat and their fries are crispy with a flakey texture. They also have fantastic salads and fried grouper sandwiches. The interior is very bar like and they have lots of outside seating. Attached to the bar/restaurant is the famous Maxwell Room. This space is great for parties and receptions. You will want to make reservations for availability and bring your own decorations. Lots of parking on the back side of the building in the free parking lot for customers.
My first visit was awesome. The oyster is a must... They have an assortment of cocktails and draft beers. Atmosphere is a laid back island vibe and friendly hosts. This place is a must. It sits on the river. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The oldest bar in Ft Lauderdale? If not, it’s one of them. Situated on the New River just south west of Andrews Avenue Bridge, this is one of the best places to relax and watch the river traffic. Tables on the river fill up fast and an unofficial line for them can form even before the place opens. Always worth a visit if you need to unwind.
This place is amazing. I used to go here all the time for lunch, but hadn't been here in a while. I thought it was a great place already, but to my suprise, they upgraded the menu. The food was delicious and the presentation was beautiful. We had the nicest waitress with an English accept. The customer service was outstanding and the view incredible. They bought new and more comfortable tables that are right on the water. They are super dog friendly and you have access to a really nice walk before or after.
Great somewhat hidden place. All the food looked great. The fish and chips I had was some of the best fish I've ever had. Great seasoning on the light breading. The calamari was delicious. Our server was very helpful and responsive. Definitely planning on returning.
Smokey blues, watermelon mojitos and locals brews while watching the boats sail by. The perfect fort Lauderdale Sunday brunch place to be. Not to mention any other time of the day and day of the week. Sit outside and feel the sun and the breeze for the perfect brunching feel. The burgers are juicy and lots of seafood dishes for those who prefer to go burgerless. The salmon sandwich is a grilled party with a side of the lightest tasty tarter sauce you will ever have tasted. Pair that with a local Funky Buddah tropical draft and you are in Paradise.
A classic local hangout, this place has been around forever. The food is really, really good. The cheese steak is freaking phenomenal. Conch fritters and artichoke dip are also amazing. They are dog friendly and we sit on the dock with our girl. The staff are attentive and they give her treats, which is so cute. We like to go on week nights. They have a full bar and we always have fun when we go. Then we walk it off with Frida after our meal.
Happened to be around the area on a Saturday night and all places Las Olas were packed. Then, I remember I had visited this restaurant many years ago and there it was, still on the same spot next to the river. Laid back atmosphere, place where locals go. Good drinks, good service. Everything was delicious. The calamari was exactly what I was looking for lightly dusted and not too salty. The burger was cooked to order and very juicy. The quesadilla was full of meat! Wow, I'm glad I found this place again 💯
The DownTowner served as the perfect place to surprise a friend visiting FL from Europe, whom I hadn't seen in 30 years. The staff understood my purpose and were happy to assist. A very special shout-out to Nancy (bartender) and Ray (host), and also T who helped on the phone. Our visitors enjoyed delicious American fare and also enjoyed the surrounding Ft. Lauderdale River Walk. Thank you Historic DownTowner for an occasion to cherish for a lifetime.
The best place by the water in the tri-county area. The ambiance is incredible. It's fun, but not crazy; lively, but cozy. Additionally, they will take care of you with a smile on their face. Clancy, the manager came to greet us personally and helped our party of 12 get a fantastic table by the river. Vincent II, our server, is out of this world. He recommended fantastic beers and dishes to everyone, and ensured that every dish came out as ordered. See it for yourself.
An amazing hidden spot!! EVERYTHING was spectacular!! The location, the views, the decor, the food variety, the food quality, the service, the speed, the prices, the specials, everything! I will definitely return many many times again. Not sure if I will sit inside because sitting by the water is just too indulging even though inside is top notch. The inside is a cozy sporty Route 66 themed place. Very spacious and excellent for big parties.
I had an amazing lunch with my uncle Paul! The margaritas were on special and 100% agave and fresh! The fried shrimp platter was exquisite, perfectly tender and white, U10 shrimp and battered fries. Ceasar salad was green and fresh. Paul got the blackened Mahi sandwich and he ate every last crumb! We watched all the boats go by and launch and dock!
Always good! Always fun! Sit by the intercoastal enjoy a nice burger, sandwich, taco, salad... whatever u like. The menu is extensive. Full bar. TVs galore, live band sometimes. Events also happen here. Sunday jazz brunch is really nice also. A local spot. This restaurant was featured in an 80s movie called flight of the navigator. Classic

buen servicio y la comida excelente con buena vista
Charming place right on the New River, get an outdoor table and watch the boats go by. We had a great burger on the daily special for $7(!). If I lived near there I’d be back for the burgers. Perfectly cooked also. Our server Matthew was great. We also shared a shrimp Cobb salad, very good. Lovely place for lunch. I’d try it for dinner too.
Excellent water front dining on the intercoastal. It is a first come. First serve open sitting inside. We were able to walk right in and get a table. Randomly stopped dead while visiting downtown Fort Lauderdale. Really cool view at night. The food was good, but nothing special. I felt our service could’ve been a little better which would’ve helped the experience. Overall will try it again.
8/12/22- Got a spot on the dock again , air-conditioning inside was fabulous they have outside seating as well. We had the fish fry Friday nice three pieces and nice french fries and coleslaw was very good. Nancy at the bar was pleasant . Got a dock spot. Score. The place was packed. Sports bar and lots of games and TV’s. Kitty was our sever. As busy as she was she was great, cool calm and collective she talked to us to joked with us and I’m telling you the place was wall-to-wall people. We wanted a beer and a bottle of wine. G had a hamburger. It’s was huge with FF. I had the lobster bisque and Marie had the French onion, looked real cheesy. My gf and I split the wine , plus I ordered their fish and chips the batter was was light real good . Marie had the Philly steak which came with peppers and onions we asked for shrooms on side. Kitty the server was truly a seasoned server.
Went for a team outing tonight. Started off with some refreshing cocktails. I had a few Pina Colada’s. They were good though a tad on the small side from a portion perspective. While my colleagues and I perused the menu for apps / entrees, we had a waiter come over (from another table) and give us his picks and WOW was he refreshingly honest and hilarious (kudos). The apps were good (calamari could have been the slightest bit more tender) but otherwise all were solid. I had the “Salmon Rockefeller” which had an artichoke topping with bacon - it was delicious and the mashed potato pile was good too. Only other slight miss was waiting for the bill, we had a final round of drinks but the waitress forgot to bring a couple waters back. Minor gripes aside, it was a good place with good food and for the most part good service as well. Would revisit.
I was craving a burger and wanted to be by the water and this was the perfect spot- the sun was out, I sat right next to the intracoastal and for once, it wasn’t humid out. There was even a cool breeze under the shade. I got the Bacon Jam burger and asked for a medium. It ended up more on the medium rare side, but it was still good. Their fries were also really good which is important to me since I usually munch on those first. The flies were a little relentless, but that’s what happens when you sit outside sometimes. tl;dr Great spot to be outside and enjoy the nice weather. Great selection of burgers.
Great atmosphere, city lights, chill park setting, yacht views on the New River. Visited on a Friday night. We requested for a table on the river, wait said to be 30-40 minutes they would text when table was ready. Enjoyed a walk in the park and enjoyed the views of some fancy yachts. Wait ended up being over a hour. Menu was good. My fiancé ordered Fish tacos with mahi and I got the Teracado mahi. The vegetables with the Teracado were bland, but the pineapple rice was very tasty. Weather was prefect and we enjoyed a night stoll after, in the beautiful area of the city.
Must've been a bad night. The service was not what my party expected. The manager that night was in a terrible mood. I love this place and come here with clients during lunch all the time. This was a special occasion that I had called ahead for and got details. I was very let down primarily the service. Food was not that great that night either. This was hopefully just a bad night. I won't give less than 4 stars because they are not deserving of a bad review. I'm hopeful next time will be better. Oh and they have fully renovated inside for those that remember the rustic look inside. Much more modern and very nice.
Me gusta mucho. Es relajante la sentada al lado del Canal. La comida excelente.
At the Downtowner Restaurant, the service came with a dash of attitude but was effective overall. It’s like a straightforward, no-frills approach to getting things done. Regarding the food, I ordered the fish and chips and a burger. Both dishes were unremarkable, fulfilling basic expectations without offering anything particularly special or memorable. However, the standout feature of this restaurant is its appeal to Minnesota Vikings fans. The place is tastefully themed with Vikings memorabilia, from posters to various other items, creating a welcoming atmosphere for supporters of the team. It’s a nice touch that adds character and a sense of community for fans. Overall, while the food at the Downtowner might not be a standout, the atmosphere, particularly for Vikings fans, gives it a unique charm. It’s a decent choice for a casual meal in a setting that celebrates a bit of Minnesota sports culture.
Came here for Tuesday trivia night and let’s just say they loved their trivia! There was so much going on I didn’t even take pictures of the food because I forgot. I had the mahi sandwich it was over cooked and nothing special. My partner had a plain burger which he said was over cooked as well. I will say the fries and drinks were good, but then again how do you mess up fries, beer, and tequila soda. The reason why we give 3 stars is because we came for trivia night which was fun despite everything that was going on. We didn’t win but we had fun trying. Not too much to say about this place but if you come for trivia night, just order drinks and prepare for it to be really loud.
I’m going to be the unpopular review here, and it’s not meant to be negative or unkind, but just honest, an opinion, and I’m always a tough grader anyway. The staff and that were nice enough, sitting right at the edge of the canal was nice, but my biggest upset was with the food itself, mind you it wasn’t terrible...The shrimp platter was just meh, just some fried shrimp thrown together with some sad, lacklustre fries, and some cocktail sauce which leaned more on the side of catsup than cocktail sauce. My oysters were fine as well. The overall experience was average at best, I can understand and respect the hype with it being a local icon, I was just left wanting.
Most of the seating is outside along the New River. We sat inside because our friend has some medical issues and can't sit outside. An old time bar serving food. Started with the SPICY TUNA WONTONS , sushi grade tuna, seaweed salad, cusabi, soy, sriracha & sesame. 4 nice portions which where very good and not too spicy. For entrees, my wife ordered the BBQ ribs, just ok and I ordered the Gulf Shrimp Platter, nice portion of fried shrimp. Both came with cole slaw and French fries.
We went here for lunch for the first time. I will start with the positives. Positives: The location is nice right across from the water & lots of beautiful yachts parked in the area. Another positive is the waiters Kitty was nice & friendly. They had mocktails on the drink menu and I had a coconut mojito and it was good. Negatives: We ordered Conch fritters and they were ok but they served it with cocktail sauce and that was not a good combination. I ordered the shrimp & grits & it was horrible. It taste like they added sugar to the meal. It was the worst shrimp & grits I ever had. My husband ordered the salmon Rockefeller and I had to spit it out it was horrible. When I went inside to use the restroom I felt out of place and uncomfortable. Overall it was a horrible experience. I will never come here again.
We came to the Downtowner this evening for dinner. It was my son, husband, a friend and myself. Our server was great. She was attentive and brought our drinks rights away. I will say that my burger, the bacon jam burger was decent. Fries were crispy. Sons burger was also satisfactory. This is where it goes downhill. Our friends burger was ordered medium rare, came out medium well and had no flavor at all. Lastly, my husbands meal was atrocious. He ordered the chimichurri steak. As you can see from the picture...the size was laughable. THIS WAS A $22 PLATE. $22.....enough said. As the server walked back by, she checked in to our table and we pointed out the sad steak. She seemed to understand immediately and said her manager would be over. She also mentioned that this was not the first complaint this week over this dish. While we waited...my husband was hungry and had two bites....two bites too many. The flavor was "off". The friend we had with us happens to be a chef and added that when he tried a bite, it was definitely far past it's use by date. We fear that this steak may have been known in the cooler as the little one and past over too many times and likely not rotated with the stock. Regardless, the manager eventually came over and said he would replace the meal. My husband was definitely not eating anything else from this restaurant at this point. We were assured that this steak was an 8 oz portion but anyone with eyeballs can see this thin little piece of steak was far less. Side note...the picture was taken BEFORE any bite of the meal was taken. We were comped the steak meal but unfortunately we were definitely left with a sour taste in our mouths....pun intended. We will not be returning to the Downtowner which is unfortunate because we are locals and live very close. Here is the Downtowners $22 steak. 🤣🤣🤢
Very disappointing. Pros: Server was very attentive and kind, nice atmosphere (outside on the patio) Cons: food. was. awful Snapper was so over cooked it was hard to eat. Pineapple rice was obviously not freshly prepared - also over cooked. Fires were cold My friends salmon was also over cooked and rubbery. Would not recommend.
Nos pedimos ceviche con conchas negras y me dio cólicos, el lomo saltado lo sirven con papas de hamburguesa, nunca en mi vida he comido el lomo en esa presentación!!!!! No lo recomiendo
