Parking was not too hard to find, which made arriving stress-free. Once we checked in, there was a short wait, but it wasn’t bad at all and definitely worth it.Raymond was a fantastic host. He took the time to share how Rantei came into being, which added a personal and welcoming touch and instantly elevated the experience. The food truly stole the show. We ordered several of the chef’s specialty rolls along with a donburi, and every item highlighted the freshness, quality, and balance Rantei is clearly known for. We ordered the following: Rantei Roll – a beautifully balanced roll featuring yellowtail and avocado, topped with salmon and tuna, finished with tobiko and spicy mayo. Rich yet clean flavors, with the fish shining through without being overpowered. Sakura Roll – made with tamago, eel (unagi), and avocado, then topped with seared salmon and black tobiko. The sweetness of the tamago and eel paired perfectly with the lightly seared salmon, creating a smooth, elegant bite. Ginza Roll – a bold and flavorful combination of yellowtail and avocado, topped with seared escolar, jalapeño, spicy mayo, and black tobiko. The heat from the jalapeño and spice was perfectly balanced by the buttery fish. Philly Roll – a classic comfort roll with salmon and cream cheese, done cleanly and correctly, letting the simplicity shine. Kaisen Don – an absolute showstopper. A generous bowl of uni, hotate (scallop), bluefin toro, kani, and ikura served over perfectly seasoned rice. Every bite tasted incredibly fresh, rich, and luxurious. Even before tasting, the presentation spoke volumes where the vibrant colors, glossy fish, precise cuts, and generous portions. The freshness was obvious, and the flavors fully delivered. Between the excellent service from Raymond, the high-quality ingredients, and a smooth overall experience, Rantei Sushi stands out as a must-visit spot.

It was our first time here and i was happy to see how busy it was. We got sat quickly and our orders taken soon. Despite it being busy our server paid us detail attention that was impeccable and the food was delicious! We will definitely return.

Rantei is one of our favorite Japanese restaurants in San Jose. Sashimi was always fresh. Rantei roll was our favorite special roll. Yellowtail collar was high recommended. Chicken karrage served in good portion and temperature hot. It has fresh wasabi, but I am not really recommend it due to the value of its cost. This restaurant don’t take reservations. The level of noise is generally good. Its staff were friendly but very busy.

Rantei is such a gem in Santa Clara! We came on a Friday evening so there was a little bit of a wait (no reservations for parties less than 6), but they are quick. We got a combination of sashimi, omakase special, and rolls. The sushi here is super fresh and you can really taste the quality in every bite. The staff is really friendly and welcoming, and the whole place has that cozy, neighborhood feel where you can tell they take pride in what they do. It’s not flashy, just really good, authentic Japanese food done right. Definitely one of my go-to spots now whenever I’m craving sushi. Highly recommend if you’re looking for something that feels a little more special than the usual sushi chains. We came for a birthday and they had a nice surprise at the end.

Full house but no wait at 8pm on a Wednesday night. Delicious chirashi, rantei roll and tonkatsu curry. Also a cute mochi for a birthday surprise! The waiters were all very sweet.

Dinner was delicious!! We were here for a friend's birthday and had a large tetami room. Several of us ordered the Kaisen Don and it was DELICIOUS!!! The presentation is unique and very nice, the quality was top, and we were so happy!! We all had a great time and I will definitely come back again when I'm visiting CA!

Rantei is my favorite sushi restaurant in the entire Bay Area. Number one, everything tastes extremely fresh. The Chirashi Don Deluxe is my go-to sashimi. Better than the standard Chirashi and IMHO better than the more expensive Kaisen Don, though that one is also the bomb. Baked sushi and grilled scallops? Other cooked sushi? Try ‘em! So good. I like the Lion King Roll. Garlic edamame will knock you for a loop. They have both the standard and fresh wasabi. Give the fresh a try… it’s not as spicy as the horseradishy stuff. They also have a nice crepe cake for dessert. Not quite Lady M standard but still delicious Service is generally good. Sometimes they get backed up and the sushi chefs can only go so fast because the food presentation is always on point. They take care making their food. They have sushi bar and tables. And I saw tatami mats but I don’t know how you get to sit there. Someday I’ll try sitting there. Location is great with lots of parking around. You’re gonna wanna get there early unless you feel like waiting though; at least on the weekends. It’s a bit pricey but we don’t eat here every week. It’s a nice treat. October 2025 update: the omikase sushi was fantastic. Green tea matcha cheese cake nice way to finish the meal.

Met a friend visiting from Guam here on a random Wednesday. No resi but for two at the bar took 5 minutes. They forgot our ikura order (it was punched in never came out til we asked after we finished our food) but we were catching up enjoying a kirin and large hot sake. Delicious cuts Decent size to price Great ambiance. About $55 a person with Large hot sake shared Garlic edamame Hamachi toro sashimi (4pc) Gyoza Warriors roll Ikura roll 1 kirin each

I’ve been wanting to try @ranteisushi ‘s infamous Kaisen Don for almost a year now. So I was super excited, and it did NOT disappoint, so delicious! Each bite just melts in your mouth. The Omakase Sashimi was beautifully presented, with all different assortment of sashimi. The chicken skewers were so tender, while the bacon mochi skewers had the perfect chewiness to it. The Dragon and Lion rolls were delicious and so creamy. The best part was, having our own private Japanese tatami-style dining room! It was so intimate, memorable, and fun. Awesome customer service too! Can’t wait to bring my family here.

I love this place. The sushi is fresh and scrumptious. The servers are kind and the managers are sweet. It gets really busy because it's so popular and it makes sense why. The food is so good. I'm very picky with sushi places and this is one of my favorite spots in the South Bay Area.

Chirashi had decent cuts, sushi rice wasn't overpowering. Rice was good quality but needed a tad more water. Fish portions were small. Dragon roll had a lot of avocado. Scallop skewer was a win while the beef skewer was dry. Service was absolutely terrible. Even worse, their website doesn't have pictures of their own food.

Truthfully, some of the best quality sushi and sashimi I had in the USA. However, I do have to take off points for the portion sizes of the omakase set. There are some amazing parts of the omakase set(specifically the otoro, salmon toro, and sweet shrimp), however, it is not worth the price in my opinion due to how small the portion sizes are for some of the dishes. I think if it is your first time at this restaurant, it is worth eating the chirashi, rolls, and sashimi. The sashimi especially was divine and is best paired with a side of rice. The food was high quality. The service could have been more attentive however. Atmosphere is only a three because while it is clean and traditional looking, it is very very cold in the restaurant. I guess it's to maintain the temperature of the fish but it was freezing and uncomfortable. I have been to Japan and been to high class sushi restaurants and it was never freezing cold. In spite of that, I would still like to go back to try other things, as the quality of the food was great and almost as good as the ones I had in Japan.

Great range of items on the menu. We ordered a few appetizers and like everything. I ordered an Omagase sashimi set and it was good for the price. I don't expect it to be the same as real Omagase experience as it's not, but this is not bad for this price range. The ambience is also not bad. Plenty of tables. We couldn't make a reservation so decided to walk in for early dinner and got seated within 10 min. Noted: one person in our group had a food poisoning next day and she suspected it might be the oyster.

Generally good food and good service. Sashimi is very fresh, sushi is also very tasty. We tried dragon roll and lion king, all are good. Also recommend beef skewer. This place is really popular. We arrived at 5:50 on a Friday night and got the seats without waiting. But after we finished, there was already a long line outside. It's good to arrive early to avoid wait.

I guess I had too much expectations. First of all, I was most dissatisfied that I couldn't make a reservation. The quality of the food was not bad, but it didn't look very good to stack plates removed from the table on the side of a restaurant that sells uncooked sashimi. If I paid more attention to cleanliness, I think it could be a better restaurant. I ordered scallop sashimi, but I couldn't order any more when I saw the serving person dusting the plates with his hands. That is very unfortunate. The fried shrimp was good.

3.5 star We sat at the bar alone, but the hostess should have asked us if we wanted to. Because on a date, it would be better to sit face to face. The quality of the sushi is pretty good, I ordered the nigihama roll, bay scallops roll, and crunchy Cal roll. For yakitori , chicken cartilage is great , but bacon mochi and wings just ok , especially the wings is not grill I think they fired it .

Long wait if you arrive after 5:30pm. Ours was about an hour. Food was ok, but nothing was remarkable. The wait staff were good, but flag them down whenever you need something or they'll just rush by. Service is slow, and needed to be reminded that some of our orders were not served. Next time for us, there are better choices for a sushi joint.

This was unfortunately my first time eating at Rantei Sushi, and it was a really disappointing experience. We waited an hour just to be seated, and once we were finally at the table, the service felt very disorganized. The salads arrived with greens that were extremely wilted and slimy, which was off-putting right from the start. We ordered the White Dragon Roll, but all I could taste were fried shallots and spicy mayo , there wasn’t much flavor at all. The Victoria Roll was slightly better, but still overall lacking and forgettable. The only item I actually enjoyed was the Agedashi tofu. I don’t think I will ever dine here again.

My first time to get food from this place via DoorDash. My daughter ordered couple of sushi. I had the dragon roll and tasted on the sour side compared to other sushi place. The California roll doesn’t have that umami taste. The aguedashi is just ok. The miso soup is diluted. Hope they improve the tastes😔
