Loxton Cellars Glen Ellen Reviews
We had such an incredible time at Loxton Cellars. Chris Loxton gave us an incredible tour and walk around his winery. He is knowledgeable, friendly, and an expert at crafting wine! We can’t wait to return and will certainly recommend this place to anyone we know going to Sonoma.
Let me start by saying this was an amazing wine experience. We visited Sonoma a few weeks ago for my birthday. This was our first tour of our stay and it likely made all the others a slight less enjoyable. Chris was phenomenal. He was so knowledgeable. We walked around the property and learned about the land, grapes, neighbors, natural agricultural techniques, and even the animals on the property. To describe this experience as enjoyable, would be an understatement. We would 100% recommend. Thanks, Chris. It was the perfect start to our week. We honestly compared all the rest in Sonoma and Napa to this one.
Of the eight wineries we visited on this trip, Loxton was the best tasting experience hands down. From the second we stepped out of our car, Chris and his wife - who was amazing, so sorry I've forgotten your name! - were lovely hosts. We received both an in-depth tasting experience and just a wonderful conversation in general. The wines were delicious; our favorites were the Syrah, Cab, and both Port-style wines, but everything was great, and very reasonably priced as well. There's several places to sit outside and soak up the beautiful vineyard and hillside views as well. We will definitely be back on our next trip!
If you are going to go to one winery this is the one. Or if you are going to many this should be your first. We did the winery tour with Chris the owner and vintner. His personality and his passion for his craft shines through. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with him. The wine was hands down the best that we tasted in our time we spent in Sonoma.
Amazing experience, we went as part of a tour group and got an almost two hour tasting with the owner. He’s incredibly knowledgeable about everything wine making, and gave what’s probably the best wine tour I’ve ever had covering both technical details about winemaking, facts about the area, and interesting stories. Great wines too! I would highly recommend visiting especially if you can get a tour!
Wow! We were so lucky to visit Glen Ellen Loxton winery in Sonoma in my platypus tours! So nice to see & chat with such an amazing Aussie Winemaker in Sonoma/‘Napa! We tried his Rosè & that was fabulous! All the wines were exceptional! Well done to him! I should have said that as a fellow aussie but will do next time I visit! Well done! 💕
My wife and I had the best time at Loxton. We booked the Walkabout tour with Mr Loxton, and we were impressed by the knowledge and charisma he showcased during our approximately 2 hours there. We left the premises with a few bottles of wine and joined their Boomerang club. That should be enough to show much much we loved it!
Great people, great wine. Everyone at Loxton has so much heart & soul! They have a good spectrum of wines. Something for everyone. Even if you don't normally enjoy port, you've got to try it!
What an absolute delight! This winery experience was exceptional and it was all because of the personalized tour that we were fortunate to get with Chris! He has an encyclopedic knowledge of the craft but it was his passion for the craft…and how to sustain it into the future…that really amazed us. He was patient with our questions (we had lots!) and his humour is delightful. We spent 1.5 hrs with Chris and we could have listed to him for 5 hrs. We learned so much and his small batch wines were excellent (our favorite was the Pinot noir). This was a highlight of our trip and we cannot thank Chris enough for his expertise and engaging personality. Highly recommended 👌
Beautiful and price-friendly tasting experience! The inside was closed to customers when we went recently, but we had an enjoyable time outside and took home some rosé and WONDERFUL port to comp the tasting fees. Most unique and drinkable port I’ve ever had.
Loxton is an absolute gem. Stop here if you're looking for something outside of the typical Cab experience. Amazing hosts and beautiful wines. Would absolutely recommend to friends and family when visiting Sonoma.
Love this boutique winery! Been several times. Small producer. On one occasion, the wine maker was pouring out tastings. Dog friendly. Always leave with a few bottles.
Great tasting experience, Nappa Valley taste with an Australian touch! I loved the reds (I can't pass up a great Cab Sauv), but the Década Tawny (2010) was the best dessert wine in all of Napa or Sonoma that I tasted this year.
Impressed by their non-alcoholic Cabernet Sauvignon. It embodied all the aspects of red wine including the tongue feel and taste but minus the alcohol. Quite amazing.
Great spot with great wine and a wonderful view! The Adirondack chairs under the tree were perfect! It’s a great value too! Go ahead and stop on by!
What a great tasting experience!!!! And GREAT WINE, will be back to stock up. Owner and his staff are great and love to share the story of their wines. Don't miss this one
An amazing experience! While Chris Loxton was out of town and could not give the 10:30 AM tour, Sandy did a great job filling in and she was very knowledgeable. She answered all our million questions easily as she is very involved in this small winery. The small, intimate vibe of the place makes it feel very special. We went on a Monday and we were the only ones there, besides a later tour group that came on a bus, tasted quickly (far away from where we sat) and left. The tasting was great, drink slowly and sit for a bit afterwards and you should be good to drive. We tasted 5 wines and she was nice to let us try another white Port that was amazing and we bought it. We sat in a couple of Adirondack chairs overlooking the vineyard and it was lovely! If you buy 1 bottle then you get half off your tour. Tour was $40 per person with tasting included, so buying a $30 bottle (which you will want to do, as the pricing is very reasonable and it’s always good to support smaller vineyards) after a 2-person tour would be 40+20+30= $90. So, only $10 more than you’d already be spending. Overall I think this is a fantastic experience and the best value for your money you will get around Sonoma.
$20 for 5 wines. Walk-ins possible. Great wine (some produced with rarer grapes: e.g. Zinfandel) with even better stories behind them. Highly recommend.
Wonderful, engaging experience! Chris is a true storyteller and taught us so much.
Excellent wine. Chris is very informative and entertaining. It was a wonderful tasting experience!
The wines were delicious, the wine maker's assistant was so knowledgeable and meeting the winemaker Chris was so nice. We got to see his passion for making truly beautiful and distinctive wines.
Chris is such a character in the best meaning possible for the phrase. His candidness is refreshing and his humor is delightful. The wines are absolutely wonderful and his patience to answer questions and share his love of his craft is icing on the cake.
Had a great time. The owner Chris came out and spoke with us. The wines were fantastic. We were able to bring a picnic and eat lunch at their picnic table. This is a very small winery. You can't find their wines anywhere else. They have no distribution so you know that no one else you know will have had their wines unless they visited the winery and you will be able to share something with you friends that they have never had before. We will definitely go back when we return to Sonoma
This was so fun! Chris was hilarious and entertaining. It was like have a comedy show with a tasting! The wine was delicious, we had to sign up for the wine club.
A GEM in the wine country! Absolutely wonderful! Walk-Ins are welcome and is true. A lovely and unique experience, because is not a commercial venture. Quiet and charming. The tasting is waived if you buy one bottle, the wine is so good people end with more than one. A must is the port! After visiting so many wineries, this one was the star of the trip. Will come back for sure!

First stop of our visit to Sonoma and it was awesome! Nancy was super friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable as we sampled their incredible selection of reds including Syrah and Cabernet. It’s brilliant value if you want a beautiful, quiet and easy going winery!
The perfect small winery. Chris Loxton was a delight. His depth of knowledge and witty humor was only equaled by his outstanding wines. It’s hard to find better examples of varietal expression. No gimmicks or Mega Purple additives here- just excellent fruit and excellent wine making. Truly a diamond.
Amazing experience at their harvesting this morning! Chris' team is super knowledgeable and committed to sourcing smaller production high quality wines. They walked us through the process from picking through fermenting, and it truly was a great experience! We enjoyed a tasting later in the day and happily left with a bottle of their Zinfandel.
We loved the entire experience. After our wine tasting, the owner, Chris, was very gracious and spent time showing us around and explaining their wine making process. We especially loved all the sweet wines and between 6 of us we bought 2 cases. Normally we shy away from the dessert wines, but these were outstanding.
Out of the 7 total wineries we went to in three days, this was maybe my favorite. Very down-to-earth, personalized wine servant who was genuinely passionate about her work, the wine, and clearly had respect for her boss - the owner of Loxton. Great tasting wine and awesome experience.
I attended the 10:30 walk around with my wife and several other people. Chris was very informative, entertaining and interesting. We loved the wines but more than anything, the knowledge gained from the 40 minute walkaround and subsequent tasting. This was by far the most informative and interesting tasting that I've attended and I've been to several others in Sonoma and Napa. It was great to hear from the winemaker himself. Both ports were amazing so we walked off with 6 of each!
Highly recommend this winery for anyone looking for great wine and a fantastic winemaker all at reasonable price! Chris was funny and delightful to spend an afternoon with.
Chris and his wife were kind enough to let us have a tasting ahead of our reservation. Chris could not assist us because he had a tour going on, but his wife was so wonderful. I'm not a wine-drinker and I think she suspected that. After telling her I usually drink Moscatos, she scrapped the remaining tasting menu and let me try their dessert wines instead. I ended up buying a bottle. Great explanations to someone who doesn't know much about wine and super down-to-earth. View is super nice and I enjoyed hearing the animals nearby.
Highly recommend! My fiance and I recently visited this winery as part of a winery tour. A must-visit winery!! The wine is fantastic and Chris is so knowledgeable and fun to listen to as he explains the winemaking process and tells a story about each wine. I appreciate the time he spent with our group. We learned so much and had a great time. The rose' was the best rose' I've ever had. I tend to lean towards red wines in general, not typically drinking a rose', but this one at Loxton was incredible and changed my entire perspective. All of the wines we tasted were excellent. The grenache and syrah also were favorites. Superb winery and hope to visit again someday!
Just delightful and not pretentious. The curly dark haired younger guy (Ryan) gave a great explanation of the growing process, the vines, how the wines are made - just outstanding. This was the best vineyard we saw – we bought a case
hands down one of my favorite tasting experiences ever. chris is knowledgeable and hilarious and the wines are exceptional. we had to limit ourselves to 4 bottles just because of room in our luggage. will absolutely be back
Nancy is AMAZING! She is so knowledgeable about the entire wine making process, and made the tasting so fun. We bought two bottles and were able to have them ship it to our home. Thanks for a great time!
Had a great experience here!! Chris was incredible and so knowledgeable. The wine was so good. Definitely stop here!!
Turned out to be one of my favorite wineries to visit while in Napa/Sonoma. Chris was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining as well. Beautiful property. You can tell he truly cares about the wine he's making and is always striving to make it better.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Luxton Wines, owned by Chris, whose journey from Australia to Illinois and eventually to Napa Valley is truly inspiring. His deep knowledge of wine, combined with a great sense of humor, made the tasting experience both educational and entertaining. Each wine we sampled was exceptional, with the standout being the Port. Impressed by the quality and value, we eagerly joined the wine club, which allows us to select our preferred wines twice a year. I highly recommend Luxton Wines to anyone seeking a memorable wine tasting experience.
Chris shared his wine and his stories. A wonderful experience. Highly recommend stopping in.
I did a tasting here awhile back with some friends. 1: the owner is excellent. I want to hang out with him. 2: the wine very high quality, i did this tasting months ago but had to leave a review (we bought a few+ bottles). Truly, excellent wine. The value is supreme. Charging $50 a bottle is truly a show of the owner’s character. Much better than the most expensive wines I’ve ever had.
We had such a refreshing experience here. Very good wine. Maybe the best Rose we had in Sonoma. The winemaker Chris is hands on and hilarious. Bought some wine to be shipped and joining the wine club.
This was the last winery we visited on my trip to Napa with friends. It came recommended to us by another friend. We chose it for the last day as we knew it was smaller and more relaxed. We had a LOVELY time sitting in the sunshine and doing our tasting with Chris Loxton. It was so special to have the winemaker and owner be the one showing us around and telling us about his winery! We were all compelled to fly wine back with us. Chris was funny and knowledgeable and we had a wonderful time learning from him. We all hope to come back! PS he makes the best port wine I have ever tasted. Sometimes, ports are too thick and honey-like for me. His was amazing! We were all very impressed.
A true gem! By far the best wine I ever had. Chris is very knowledgeable and passionate (and funny too!) he makes the experience very special. It was definitely my favorite of over 20 tasting rooms I visited.
We came to the Wine county as a part of our California road trip. We also visited some of the big wineries, but we really liked the personal touch of Loxton’s. They were great, attentive and knowledgeable people.
If you are looking for a cute, family run winery this is the place to go. The owners Chris and Christy are terrific. The wine tastings are affordable, the setting is beautiful and quaint. It is located just off Hwy 12 in Glen Ellen and a great stop when you are wine tasting in Sonoma County.
Delightful owner and winemaker with tasty wine. We had a wonderful experience at Loxton Winery and you know you are learning from someone who loves his job and his relationships with the growers. We learned a great deal and would highly recommend!
Fabulous tasting hosted by winemaker Chris Loxton. Clearly detailed the entire winemaking process including showing us the grape vats and barrels. Luckily we were there at harvest time and got a real time look at the complexities of winemaking. Loxton wines are wonderful and it was a remarkable day for all 15 of us! Thank you!
