They have everything you would expect on the menu, plus things that matter. The Chicken Mole surpassed all expectations. Not too salty and just the right amount of cocoa. Everyone was friendly and attentive to anything we needed. We will definitely go back!
Lived in Mexico off and on for approximately 20 years and the food here is authentic. I go for the red posole on Thursdays and it's as good as it gets. The staff is always very helpful and accommodating and very warm. The chile rellenos is excellent and the bistec empanizada (breaded flank steak) with ranchero sauce is one of my favorites! When you add the fact they make their own Aguas, (tamarindo, pepino, horachata etc.) it's a hard to beat combination and a real Jewel for our area!
Been here a few times and it never fails, amazing food every time! You do have to wait a bit for your food to come out, but everything comes out fresh.
Great food ! Fish Tacos Chicken Mole Fresh tortillas are light and airy. The chicken flautas were amazing. Not oily crispy Would like a bit more filling personally. Shrimp Cebollas was delicious with flavor punch.
This place is always too busy to get into so when we saw a chance to stop in, we did. No disappointment here! Chicken Enchiladas were fantastic and the House Burrito filled up the hubby. An absolute stop for great Mexican food.
Real deal authentic here. They're making legit dishes you can't get anywhere else around.
Five stars for food, atmosphere. Service staff are kind and wonderful too. would have given them 5 stars too, but for not being able to explain the menu and suggest alternatives. We had fried fish. Delicious and well presented. It was a good enough portion for two.
This place is AMAZING!! Their food is great and the people are great! Their service might be slow at times but that’s because it’s always nice and busy!
Always packed when we came by last summer so we came back when it's slower. Found another place for real Mexican food! House burrito filled with 🥑 and pollo, enchiladas great too. We'll be back. Back for 🌮-yum
What a great find! We were a group of 3. It was definitely a busy hour we went but we got seated quickly and given our menues and drinks in good time. After placing the order our food came out in a timely manner. Everything was absolutely delicious. From the queso and guacamole dip to our entrees. Every bite was savoured.
This is our go to place for tacos, fajitas, and catering. The owner is extremely friendly and the food is always a hit. 10/10 would recommend.
Ixtapa was a great stop on my drive from D.C. to Atlanta. The food came out SO fast. The quality was pretty good and the staff were super friendly. My wife had the idea of ordering coffee. I must say, I didn’t have very high expectations. When it came out it had a very interesting twist of cinnamon and some other spice. I did enjoy it but I would have preferred it to be a bit stronger. Overall, I’d suggest this place to anyone passing through!
The food was amazing. Got the Flautas and the Bistec with onions. The tortilla chips are flour instead of corn and so delicious. Highly recommend the guacamole. Got two of the green sauce tamales to go. They are huge and more meat than masa. Delicious with a nice kick! I didn't care for the tres leches but I'm kind of picky with how I like mine. Super friendly staff. Place has a great boho old school vibe.
Not fancy but it is lovely to sit outside. There are lots of toys for the children out on the lawn. Freshest Mexican food around, and much more authentic
This is THE BEST Mexican place within hundreds of miles. The food is ALWAYS so delicious. The menu is always great. The tacos are a delight, the burritos are on point. The weekends they do Aguachile; it is phenomenal! This is one of the three dishes we had on Saturday. We also had their mixed fajitas, and they were perfectly seasoned. Let’s talk about their tortillas, soft and delicious. They have a great selection of beverages from horchata to beers to fresh coconut water. Their deserts are even solid. Basically this is a MUST GO spot in the triangle. It is the best Mexican food you will have in the state. That’s not an exaggeration. I am someone who loves food; and regularly enjoys going out to eat as well as cooking. I love this spot and I will go after hikes as often I can. I hope they continue to do well and expand!
The service was amazing! The lady who helped us was quick and efficient. Patient with us as we were a big group, some of us kids who didn't know what they wanted. The food was yummy, I recommend the shrimp taco for sure!! The little bathroom was nice and clean. Had we explored the seating a bit more we definitely would have gone down to the big sycamore tree area with the kids play things. It was an excellent stop on our road trip through the area.
I’m a big fan of Restaurante Ixtapa! While the restaurant is unassuming, that doesn’t bother me—the food and hospitality more than make up for it. The Chile Relleno is always fantastic, and the homemade chips pair perfectly with their guacamole. The family who owns and operates the restaurant is incredibly kind and welcoming, which adds to the warm atmosphere. I keep coming back for the authentic food and great service. Highly recommend!.
One of my close friends invited me for the first and the staff and the vibes were so nice I decided to bring my family the following week. My family fell in love with it as well, and they even went again without me(sad, haha). The staff really treats you like family, and if you sit in the back by the banana trees, it feels like you're in a family members house. Would recommend to anyone who loves GOOD authentic Mexican food and enjoys good vibes!
Love this place already, but I recently attended an event they catered and it was done so well, it reminded me how awesome they are. Sweet and hospitable with tasty food always prepared and presented with care, no matter what I order (though the huarache is my favorite!). Occasionally service is challenged at the restaurant, but it's ALWAYS friendly and caring. When you're tucked into the banana plants and mandevilla outside with a cold beer on a hot day, it's like a mini-vacation!
I have a big problem with this place, and that is I wish I could eat here food more often. This place is such a great spot for a date night or the whole family. Outdoor seating is where its at for me.
I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW THEIR FOOD IS SO DELICIOUS! I found this restaurant through google because we were traveling from Long Island, NY and we weren’t familiar with the area. My whole family was looking for authentic food and we decided to come here plus it was super close to our hotel. We were greeted immediately and seated as well. The servers are so welcoming and they help you with their menu. My whole family is Spanish speaking and the servers quickly bounce from Spanish to English if necessary. They have daily specials and amazing tacos. We decided to go a second time before our departure and this time it was even better. The restaurant had coconuts ready to be cracked open if ordered and we ordered 4. Our server told us the owner would be serving our coconuts and he was AMAZING! He thanked us for coming to his restaurant and trying his authentic Mexican food. My family enjoyed their dine here and I’m writing a review to express how down to earth everyone is here. We have lots of family who travels to NC and we will be recommending this place to everyone and anyone we know. Thank you to the owner for having amazing conversations with us and also the staff who is VERY HELPFUL AND ACCOMMODATING. thank you!!!
The food was incredible, great place for families, large outdoor tables, tire swings, and space for kids to run around Update- I saw a review from a guy about the coconuts- yes they’re expensive but there are two types of coconuts- those with a lot of meat, and those with a lot of water. He seems to have wanted a unicorn coconut and I hate that his ignorant review brings down their rating- this place is incredible!!
Food was delicious and quick. Really liked the outdoor dining experience. The umbrellas were perfectly situated to block the Sun and provide you with shade. The homemade corn tortillas were very good.
Love, love, this place. Best fish tacos around and the kids thought the food was amazing. The chips and guacamole were out of sight. Highly recommend you stop in if you're ever in Hillsborough. Plus the owner is super friendly. My only complaint was the lack of margaritas but I could do without just to eat their fish tacos, they do have a small beer selection. It looks like they have great outdoor space as well.
Stopped here for a late lunch just because we wanted to sit outside. What a find! The fish tacos were wonderful - light and tasty. Chips and guacamole both very good. Beer was cold, service efficient and staff were wearing masks. We'll make an effort to go again.
We had the most delightful and delicious breakfast at this cute spot! The restaurant was pretty quiet during our morning visit, but I bet it gets pretty busy as the day goes on. If we're in the area again, we'd love to come hang outside and eat dinner on the patio!
Even though it has a rough look on the outside, it is truly authentic Mexican food. The Barbacoa just melted in your mouth and the spices were heavenly. The rice and beans were fresh. The coke in the glass bottle was a perfect way to complete the meal. The staff was super friendly. The atmosphere was laid back.
Ixtapa is a fabulous hole-in-the-wall style restaurant with tons of outdoor seating and cozy indoor patio seating with heaters for the winter months. This is the kind of restaurant I adore, where 100% of the focus is on the food. I've tried nearly everything on the menu now and have never been disappointed by the food I received. They're famous for their fish tacos and deservedly so! Their service is very friendly though it can get pretty slow on busy days. That said, this hasn't been the case recently, so they may have instituted some changes to speed up their process. In addition to their fish tacos, I highly recommend their Tuna Pescadillas and their Camerones a la Diabla (deviled shrimp), if you like spicy food.
Love, love, love this place! Authentic, excellent Mexican food. Great outdoor seating. Homemade corn tortillas. This place is an absolute favorite and the prices are good. Highly recommend if you like authentic Mexican. If you like Americanized Mexican, you must try this place and you’ll never go back to your Americanized place.
Very good traditional Mexican. Family-owned restaurant. Update: October 2020. Best outdoor seating & dining in Hillsborough! Breakfast is great, and am slowly working through the menu. Mixed fajitas are superb, as are the chicken enchiladas -- large portions, too. Loved their table salsa, queso, and chips.
I decided to check out Ixtapa after reading the great reviews and had a fantastic experience! The parking lot is small but there is plenty of available parking along the road. There are many places to sit including inside, outside on a covered patio, an open patio area and also seating in the grassy area next to the restaurant. I sat in the grassy area where there's also a play area for kids and a tire swing. The service was fast, and the staff was very friendly. Lots of options on the menu. I recommend the flautas, carnitas, the chips and guacamole (super fresh guac and homemade chips!), and the horchata if you love cinnamon. Relaxing atmosphere, delicious food, and good prices means I'll be coming back!
Incredible food! And great pricing. We go every couple weeks. Have never been disappointed
First visit today to this lovely restaurant and loved it from start to finish! True, authentic Mexican cuisine! They were really busy at the time I visited, however, I was still attended to within a reasonable amount of time. All of the food was delicious and the service was great. Definitely recommend and definitely will be back next time I visit NC!
accidently found this place because of a wrong turn, best mistake ever! Love everything on the menu, especial the fried sea bass and fish tacos. came back for lunch and dinner and tried everything on the menu. fast, large portion, omg the portions!! great price, fresh ingredients, cant beat it.
I've been visiting and loving Ixtapa for several years, but hadn't ordered takeout since the pandemic. Today I ordered a takeout lunch of Tostadas de Ceviche and their "Don Burrito" with carnitas (pulled pork). Honestly, if the only thing I had to eat for the rest of my life was that tostada de ceviche, I'd be content. Crisp homemade tostadas (two, for only $8.50) covered with delicious, tart and tender ceviche and huge, perfect slices of avocado. The burrito (only $7.50) was beautifully presented, flavorful, and enough to feed two people. In the past I've enjoyed their homemade guacamole and totopos, and any number of their authentic seafood dishes, and I've always left happy and full. It feels, especially now, when the crowds are thin, like visiting a neighbor's house and being served from their kitchen. I encourage you to visit and support this gem in the Hillsborough community.
Food: incredible Service: fast and friendly Atmosphere: very informal, funky and if the weather is nice the outdoor area is a wonderful park
I knew this place was awesome before I even sat down. They sell candy at the counter. Yup, Candy! Then under the table top each table the have currency from all over the world. Alll of this before I’ve even eaten. I’m salivating... I gave this place 5 stars before eating. This place is a “foodie’s” wet dream Then I got my food!
Very good food . Best tacos in the area The whole staff is really nice . Outdoor seating, great place to bring the family
Yummy food, but the kid-friendly atmosphere makes it a 10/10! Play house, tire swing, lots of cars and trucks to ride in. Pure heaven.
Ixtapa is a hidden treasure in Hillsborough. The food is delicious at amazing prices, service is quick, and the atmosphere is wonderful. They've got indoor, screened in, and outdoor seating with a playground area for small children. My favorite dish is the barbidillas. It's the best I've had. Highly recommend eating here if you're in the area. Won't be disappointed
Nothing else matters. Food is absolutely delicious.
Great food and plenty of space inside and outside with toys for kids to play on/with!
Great place to eat. Was my first time there and was very impressed. Keep up the good work.
The location is great, with a nice big grassy area and toys for kids. The servers were friendly and efficient. Food was delicious, too! The manager was extremely kind and understanding about the needs of the children in our party. He was so welcoming that we will recommend this restaurant to other families!
Huge menu, good quality food, kind staff, and above all a great environment with outdoor seating options. The location of this spot is tucked away and surrounded by greenery, including a trail access point. Highly recommend a visit. The vibe and family-owned local aspect of this restaurant make it a nice business to have in Hillsborough.
It's got to be good, the police ate here. This was a midway location to meet my daughter. She from Danville, me from Raleigh. The food was great and big potions. The staff was friendly & helpful. Picking just one entrée off the menu was hard. We even got the cake for dessert. She definitely wants to met here again.
This place is so great for having a nice meal with another adult while the kids play. The food is great, kids are entertained, adult conversation can be had. If you’re a parent, you will be happy here.
The restaurant itself is a little outdated but the food, portions and service are top tier. Everything was fresh and delicious and the service was fast and friendly! If I lived closer I would be there a lot!!
This is a go-to casual place with little kids when the weather is nice - outside seating in a lovely spot surrounded by trees (and a few banana plants). Kids can play in the grassy area and there are toys set up for them. Recommend the fish tacos and burritos!
Bbq resturant closed we annually meet at. On mlk day we found good link up point. Recommend supporting this estsblishment. Everything was great, quiet and fast service. The food was awesome and bountiful.
Small spot just past Weaver’s with a few tables indoors and on the covered patio. Patio is heated and comfortable during the winter. Food is excellent, would definitely recommend Ixtapa for Latino food in Hillsborough
Love their set up. Small indoor seating area, a slightly larger covered outdoor patio and then a much larger patio with umbrellas. Food is good. Slightly hidden from the main thoroughfare in Hillsborough and worth the visit.
Authentic Mexican food with a great atmosphere! Try the coco frio, they cut the coconut in front of you! Service is a little slower, but the staff is extremely kind and the great food makes up for it. The Diabla tacos are my favorite.
This place is an experience more than anything. The majority of the seating is outdoors with music and lots of blooming plants. It's really lovely and rustic, though the music was so loud we couldn't hear our conversation. If you want a relaxed meal, definitely sit indoors. The food was fresh, and there were lots of options. Oddly, no prices are listed on the menu. My table enjoyed the carnitas, diablo tacos, and chori pollo. I went here because it was recommended in the local gluten free forum, though only two items on the menu were actually marked gluten free --pico and chips. The rest requires inquiry and modification, which was easily and safely done.
The burritos are huge and delicious. Fish tacos also very tasty. Great outside dining is available, playground for kids too. Prices reasonable. Wait staff pleasant. Will go again.
The food was a little bland and could've benefitted from more spices. A very frustrating thing was that when we went, they were out of a lot of things that we ordered. It is expected to occasionally be out of some things but it was 6 or so things we ordered that were out of stock. Plus, they'd take the order, go to the kitchen, and come back about 15 minutes later saying they were out. On the plus side, the food was still really tasty and they had quite an assortment of things to try. Plus the staff is extremely friendly and were more than happy to substitute meat options for their veggie options with no extra charge, which is important to me.
Great authentic Mexican food. The guac is amazing and tacos are wonderful. Lots of outdoor seating and can accommodate large groups. No prices on the menu is a bit odd.
First off 4 stars not because of quality or quantity of food. This is a small place of 8 tables so it is a bit close. The server was friendly but was trying to do too much. She had to serve, clean the tables take the money and take outs while 4 others in the back. Portions were good and food was tasty. My only complaints were that you have to pay for chips and the sour cream portion was not much larger than a thimble. Will eat again just a little disappointed about the chips and sour creme.
This is an interesting little place. It is little by the way. Probably the smallest restaurant I have ever been in. It looks like its very clean and they have a high sanitation score posted from the country. The food was tasty. A lot of the things we tried were a little on the salty side but not to the point where it became a major issue. The guacamole was the best tasting of all the things we ordered. Tacos were a little disappointing. (chicken and chorizo) I will need to try the shrimp and fish tacos next time to see if they are any better. It seems that the specials of the day if probably the way you want to lean when ordering. Service was very friendly but slow. Overall a cute place for a casual dinner.
The fish tacos and guacamole were excellent and very generous. I had wished they had ceiling fans or screens on the patio to keep insects down. The place is rich with atmosphere - you feel like you are in latin America - not fancy but definitely atmosphere. The prices seemed a tiny bit high but not so high that I would not return.
The food was really good and priced so well! Our waitress took our order and seated and served drinks to 2 other tables after us. I assumed she just forgot and went to nicely remind her and was jumped on by what I assume was her supervisor. She was rude and spoke to me like I had done something terribly wrong and this was before I opened my mouth. What a shame to ruin our experience. And we definitely will never go back!!
Nice outdoor seating. Unheated though. I don't recommend coming close to closing but it's probably pretty good otherwise. The picture of my food was pretty different than what I got. I didn't realize they put cheese on the beans for everyone so if you don't want that ask. I asked for no ice in my water but they gave me ice anyway. I thought the corn tortillas were good. They don't do fountain drinks which is really better that way. They have cans and bottles. I wasn't crazy about my guacamole dip either. I think the patio is so cute but I just don't think the menu is for me.
I really enjoyed the food, really top quality and felt super authentic. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the people were nice. However, the service wasn't that great, they didn't give us the right food, and though of course they took it back and exchanged it, altogether the service was a bit lacking.
Overall just ok. Atmosphere was great with there being a live band. The hustle of the service was good but they didn't bring our food out at same time. Two in our party got their burritos and finished them before the rest in our party. One kids meal was completely forgotten so had to wait on that. I had the Flautas and they were overcooked with bone-dry chicken inside of them. Rather than any kind of sauce or pico, they piled a mini salad of iceberg, an onion slice with a couple of tomatoes and barely any dressing. The rice had hardly any flavor and the refried beans were grainy with tiny, hard pieces if beans. That part was awful! Lastly there are NO prices on the menu. Another one in our party paid the bill so can't comment on if the prices were fair or not. Would go back for the atmosphere but drinks and apps only. No to the food 😞
Staff is nice, but incredibly disorganized and slow. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to how they pick a table to grab orders when they're busy (so we ended up being behind in service to others who arrived later). It took us over an hour to order and get our food (simple tacos). We never received any refills and ran out of drinks before we finished eating. They did only have 2 waitresses, one taking drink and chip orders, one taking food orders. We waited 30 mins for our drinks and chips, while others waited just 5 mins, it was weird. The tacos were decent. The chorizo one was the best and I highly recommend it since it's hard to find good chorizo tacos that aren't too salty. The chicken was okay, a bit dry, but well-seasoned. The carne asada was terrible and rubbery, lesson learned on that one. The chips are good. The pico is awesome. The cheese dip was bland and tasteless. In the end, it was a lot of money for a meal that was hyped up in the review but failed to live up to expectations. It was nice to have outdoor seating.
The food was unfortunately not all that great, needed flavor. I had the chicken enchiladas verdes and my partner had the Don burrito Pastor. It's like they didn't put any seasoning in it, no onions in the dish, but for some reason the pico that was supposed to be on top was a slice of onion, a slice of tomato and a slice of avocado. The creama tasted like it was just mayo. Very inexpensive, so if you're on a budget it works. The outside areas and the sunroom were beautiful, so it's great for hanging out and drinking a sugar cane Coke.
Bottom line: tasteless food, late and below average service. I ordered fajitas (which according to their menu is their specialty). It was a Friday evening, and it was mostly full (but not crowded). But, they took way longer than usual time to serve the food compare to fajitas in other Mexican restaurants. The taste and food quality does not worth the money you pay for. The service is very slow. During the course of my meal (~30 mins) not a single time waiter came back to ask 'how is the food'. The texture of the food was mostly below average. The salad that came with the fajitas did not seem very fresh. The fajitas (sautéed onion and bell pepper) did not appear to be freshly made either. So, the question I want to ask is how the hell it took more than 25 mins to make the fajitas? The disastrous part of all the fajitas did not have any seasoning!!! None, whatsoever! No salt, no pepper, no spices. A total failure of cooking. That was the waste of my $17 and good 30 mins. I do not know how is any other of their dishes taste like but I will strongly discourage to visit this place. Take your hunger somewhere else.
The food is decent. I can't say anything good or bad about it. However, customer service is horrible it took nearly an hour for food to be brought out, which, by the way, they didn't even apologize for. However, the worst part of it when we actually got to eating, flies began attacking us they were landing on our food from all sides, and I had to eat eat with one hand and get flies away with another hand. Either way, though, you could get better quality of service and an atmosphere free of flies while at the same time having the same quality of food at any other Mexican restaurant in the country.
Was pretty bad I won't lie. We ordered a few enchiladas and it took over an hour for the food to come. Multiple people who got there after us got their food before us as well. When the food finally got to us, it was cold, which we later learned was because our food was sitting on the counter the entire time. We had to ask to get it replaced. No one asked if wanted a price reduction, and when we finally wanted to get to-go boxes, we had to wait another 15 minutes before going inside to get them ourselves. Not only that but they failed to tell us that they charge extra for drink refills, and we saw other people being seated at tables that were not cleaned after the last costumer. Overall bad experience. Do not come here if you want a pleasant, stress-free experience.
Will NEVER return Awful! The food was nasty and dull. It had no flavor. Our waiter never asked if we needed anything or if we were ok. We waited for over an hour for 3 simple orders. We were told by the hostess that she saw our food sitting for a long time, yet nothing was done. They forgot about us. Because our food was sitting, it was completely cold when we got it. They took the food back to heat it per our request, which added more time to the hour wait. This is the most disorganized, inept restaurant staff that I've ever dealt with, and it's the absolute worst restaurant service that I've ever had. There are too many good Mexican restaurants in the area to waste time going to this one. Horrible.
Too many flies in the restaurant. Hard to eat when they attack you. Service is really slow. Corndog from children menu was cooked in 1 hour. Food is average. Chicken and steak very dry, not juicy at all. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
Cute outdoor seating. I only ordered the guacamole and it was very good but the service was very slow and the wait staff was curt and not friendly. Took 30 minutes to get drinks. The drinks actually came after the food. Also, they say the house-made tortilla chips are gluten free but my daughter is a celiac and she didn’t feel comfortable eating them bc they looked like deep fried flour tortillas. I could be totally wrong and they could be gluten free but the staff wasn’t friendly enough or trustworthy enough to be sure. This place could be a cute road side Mexican food place, but the staff is the worst.
Went today to buy a fresh coconut, but I got the worst one. These people should know when a coconut has gone bad. The lady let me choose a fresh one. Opposite of what it was. Sour water and no meat in the inside. Also 8.50 for a coconut that isn’t good. Never get a fresh coconut from them. Get a mature coconut instead.
First timer here. Brought my family here for our weekly family dinner out. It was laughable....no prices on the menu....dull, droning service as if we were just another dumb group that had to be waited on. The food looked atrocious and only one of us ate...the kids chicken looked like 3-week-old fish sticks. The place is like a hole in the wall, dirty, gross......they have cameras everywhere and can take payment at your table which seems funny since they could invest in a better environment and cleaner restaurant....but chose this technology instead. There was dirty silverware presented in paper bags....I honestly could go on. It was a big let down because I have heard good things about it. After visiting and seeing it for myself I can honestly say I'd never set foot in there again or even consider getting take-out.
