At Village Diner, we're thrilled to share our passion for delicious comfort food with you. Located in the heart of Hillsborough, NC, our restaurant is a local favorite, with customers raving about our signature dishes like panqueques de arándanos and tortilla de jamón y queso. We've worked hard to create a warm atmosphere where friends and family can gather, with some tables available outside for a lovely breeze on a sunny day. Our team strives to provide attentive service, even if it means a little extra time between courses – we want you to savor the flavors!
Village Diner is becoming a regular spot for some, known for its good food, especially the pancakes. However, some customers have experienced slow service and found the prices unreasonable for the portion sizes, particularly for breakfast.
Tip: Be prepared for potentially slow service, especially when the restaurant is crowded.
This is a very busy restaurant. We were able to get the last of the inside seating. There are a few tables outside. The service was a little slow, but the two waitresses were hustling. The blueberry pancakes were awesome and definitely worth the wait. Everybody in my party enjoyed the quality of the food. The restaurant was clean and tables were being cleared quickly for waiting customers.
Delicious food! The french toast with fried apples is perfection, not too sweet! The grits are so good! Home fries are cooked just right! Biscuit is fluffy and moist. Overall fresh homemade food! Highly recommend!
I truly enjoyed my first experience at The village diner. Tony really knows how to make an amazing cocktail! He's super friendly and really knowledgeable. I had the spinach salad and it was truly to die for! I will definitely be back!
Great breakfast! Everyone liked it. 4 year old, Ada, says, "It was yummy. I like the blueberries." Staff was friendly and flexible. Def worth checking out if you're passing through the area :)
Hot and heavy pizza-hold the siracha was great. Sausage had enough spice. Crust was just right. Cesar salad was over the top. Pilsner beer finished nicely. Daily specials sound good too so we'll be back.
This is my favorite restaurants in Hillsborough. It is an unassuming storefront that looks like it might be another average small-town diner but it really is much nicer than that. They have a relatively small menu with some very high quality items. I have been several times and tried something new every time. I've really enjoyed everything I've had. The pulled pork I had was great, as was were the grits I had another time. The last time I was there I tried a vegetarian meal. I got the cauliflower steak. I want sure what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. This place is a little away from the downtown area but is definitely worth checking out.
Located at the north foot of Occoneechee Mountain lies the town of Hillsborough, the fifth oldest town in North Carolina. There you can find some interesting history as well as the Village Diner and a truly outstanding breakfast. If you pulled up to this building and there were no cars there, you would fully believe that the place was abandoned—the outside is that stark. Furthermore, it is located in a section of West Hillsborough that is very run down. Indeed, as I drove through the neighborhood to get to it, I had almost convinced myself that there was some error and there would be no restaurant in this neighborhood. But there it was. Two of Orange County’s finest were inside...so at least I will be safe. The inside was completely different from the outside—it is beautifully (if simply) decorated with a wood theme undertone. My server was outstanding—polite, friendly, accommodating, and cheerful—one of those who truly understands the food service industry and strives to do well. In fact, the entire staff was nice, with one other server greeting me, and the owner or manager giving a heartfelt goodbye and thank you as I left. I ordered an array of items: Eggs: I ordered them over easy, but they came medium. If you have read my reviews, you know how picky I am about my eggs. Nevertheless, I am going to forgive this one transgression because everything else was so positively outstanding. Sausage patties: wonderfully seasoned, excellent flavor. The pork comes from local farmers and is seasoned and pattied in house. This is some of the best sausage I ever et. Freshness matters! Bacon: excellent smoky taste and cooked perfectly. Grits: stone ground in Albemarle, they were creamy and delicious. Again, outstanding. Gravy: a bit non traditional in both color (darker rather than whiter) and flavor—I detected the distinct but not overwhelming taste of...wait for it...oregano. Who woulda thunk it? But trust me— it works! The gravy was delicious! Biscuit: this also deviates slightly from what would be considered a traditional southern biscuit, but it was excellent and is one of the best biscuits I’ve ever had. Coffee: ranks in the top few restaurant coffees I’ve ever had—rich and flavorful—being beaten only by Smith Street Diner in Greensboro. The price is higher than most breakfasts, but I would cheerfully pay it again. Food this good is worth paying for. While you are in the area, I would highly recommend visiting the Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area. An easy hike to the 867 foot peak and overlook is well worth it. The view from this vantage point—overlooking the Eno River and Hillsborough—is like none other in this part of the state.
My wife and I were looking for a place to eat breakfast over the weekend. There aren’t many options in Hillsborough, but I did find this diner on google and decided to give it a try. I am so glad we ended up going because everything we had was very good and we will definitely be returning!
We went to the Village diner today during its soft opening. The updates to the interior look good and the place is really clean. Each of our breakfasts where good. My Millworkers Breakfast was quite good, especially the hash browns. We will be back!
Was driving down I-85 and looking for a spot to grab dinner. They had great reviews so decided to stop in with my fiancé. Everyone seemed to be eating pizza on a Friday night, so we ordered the California Yardbird. So good! Will definitely stop by again if we are in the area.
The Village Diner is not far from our house, which is dangerous because we end up eating there so much! Food is delicious and worth the wait if you go during their busy hours (basically brunch hours Sat and Sun). BBQ sandwich is the best I've ever eaten. The diner has a lovely sunny atmosphere and friendly staff. Could use one more server during busy hours! 😊 But overall one of our favorite Hboro restaurants!
The owners are very nice. It looks like they have really done a lot of remodeling. You can certainly tell there is a lot of passionate folks that work there. David rocked the Apple pie and the chess pie as well. Can't wait to visit you all again!!
This marvelous dinner was PACKED because the food was so amazing. The management is obviously experienced at making things in food work well. I cannot say enough good things about my first visit here this year. I'm so eager to see what's in store as they make the rest of their updates.
Hands down the absolute best BBQ sandwich I have ever eaten. To start with, the bread was flaky and yet had just enough of a crunch to know it was toasted on the inside. The BBQ sauce was a dream for this Midwestern girl. The meat was tender and just sauced enough to flavor and not BE the sandwich. The slaw has become a topic of conversation in our house all by itself. This slaw let cabbage be the star instead of being vinegar with a hint of cabbage. The drizzle of sauce on top the slaw was, at first glance, unnecessary. However, after first bite, amazing. Delish. Fantastic. Dreams are made of this sandwich. I live over an hour from this little gem and yet my husband and I talk about making the trip just for the sandwich. If I haven't described it to a point that makes your mouth water, I haven't done a very good job because I'm about to drown in my own spit just thinking about it. Oh yeah, and the service was great as well. It could have been awful and we probably wouldn't have cared because the food is the star. You won't regret going here!
My husband and I love this place. Everything we've ever gotten there has been outstanding. Try their bbq. It would collapse a nearby establishment if the word got out. The banana pudding is world class. The staff is wonderful. Always a great experience, try it for yourself!
Great down home cooking. Buffet style. Reasonable rates. $9.99 for the full buffet, but you can order from the menu if you prefer. Seems the locals come here alot. I recommend the fried chicken and peach cobbler. The country style steak wasn't good... the meat seemed 2nd rate quality somehow. Overall... great hole in the wall, down home cooking. Highly recommend.
my 7 years old call this place "mind-melting burger place". food here is simply superb; fresh, made to order, great selections, small dining area, lots of flavors, and fast wait staff. price is very reasonable for the portion and quality. We come here once a week minimum for breakfast or lunch, we will check out dinner one day.
Fantastic brunch, fantastic service! This place nailed it. Will definitely be back. Even when business picked up the service was still attentive. Daily specials no doubt keep a fresh menu on hand for regulars and add a bit of variety for those of us just passing through.
A well executed, family friendly neighborhood diner. Decent beer choices, especially for a diner. Our party of five including kids was welcomed and enjoyed good burgers and brunch items. Solid service. Looking forward to going back.
Absolutely amazing. A+. Everything I've tried here is wonderful. I love the meatloaf. For all theirs entrees they use locally grown products and they cook from scratch. Owner used to be the general manager of the Hillsborough bbq co. and he brings great experience with him. The food is a southern style with a modern approach. The banana pudding is the best thing you'll ever taste, a perfect 10.
This is not your standard American Diner! They have a very eclectic menu that changes often. SInce I'm from New York I would never order pizza from a diner but I did on the recommendation of a good friend and their Pizza is excellent! Very friendly staff they're being responsible during the pandemic. I highly recommend trying this restaurant if you're anywhere near it
I was looking for a spot midway between Raleigh and Greensboro for a quick catch up with friends and family. This restaurant popped up on Google search and is truly worth the drive. Yes the food is great, as too the servers. One of the servers I've had, mabe one of the owners, is a blacksmith and made the booths in the restaurant. Stories add to the experience. Meeting friends for the fourth time.
Fabulous hidden gem in Hillsborough, NC. Do not judge this book by its cover! The food at Village Diner is beyond good, maybe more than great, and totally worth a few visits. I have had the pleasure of trying lunch twice, dinner, and breakfast and have yet to be disappointed. There are a few things to consider, however. Despite the name and appearance this is not a diner in the traditional sense. This place serves updated takes on southern cuisine classics. The menu is small and that is appropriate for a restaurant that focuses on quality rather than quantity. The prices are higher than a traditional diner but so is the quality. Remember, with food you tend to get what you pay for. Quality ingredients and skill tend to require a higher cost. If you want a more traditional diner experience this is not the place for you. If you want a refreshing take on southern classics and understand that you pay more for quality food, this is the place for you.
Kristen did an awesome job! She was super polite and attentive to the table's needs. The food was some of the best breakfast I've had in a long time. I'll be back next time I'm through Hillsborough and I'll definitely recommend The Village Diner to anyone I know in the area.
Not your parent’s Village Diner. Under new ownership this is the NEW Village Diner. Village Diner 2.0 for all the millennials out there. Same location but the interior has been renovated and now sports a clean industrial look. Gone is the buffet option that the previous owner offered back in the mid 1990’s which was never any good anyway. This new version of the Village Diner is light years better! Well maintained. Nice and clean. Great energy and a chef with a black belt in cooking! I’ve had breakfast, brunch, lunch, and a few dinners there. All have been great! Fresh hot and tasty every time. Fried Oyster salad is out of this world good. Catfish sandwich is excellent. Biscuits and Gravy has great flavors and comes out steaming hot every time. The menu offers many different and creative choices. Wednesday through Saturday they offer pizza but I have not tried that yet- others report the pizza to be excellent! They also offer daily specials that seem to be the chef’s way of flexing his culinary muscles! Not to nit pick but I have noticed some QC issues (pancake orders have varied in size as have some plates of home fries) but this is really the only negative I could think of. There is no better breakfast option in Hillsborough. None! Service is good and food has always come out quickly.
I’ve only ordered DoorDash so no review on the service or atmosphere. However the food was absolutely fantastic and is as classic as breakfast foods get. Bacon was crispy, hash was greasy but well seasoned and the omelette was worth every dollar(filling and delicious).
A nice cozy place with a great food and beer menu. The pizza is fantastic, up there as one of the best in town. But don’t skip the burgers they are top notch. They have really good special menu items as well. And they do a great breakfast too. You really can’t go wrong here.
This just all around a great dinner joint. Haven’t been there for brunch yet, but have only heard good things. A little on the loud side, if you happen to be easily over stimulated just go early when not as crowded. Food is delicious and always great beer options on tap.
I ate here in July 1994. My helper, Brent and his Father, joined us for dinner. I remember Harold being nice enough to allow me to pay for the meal even though he invited us and picked the place. I guess he needed to save up for a gambling debt or something, "rumors". Anyway, I recall that I wanted to return as soon as I could but...life and kids and work and I just haven't been able to be in that area again to eat. In fact, I don't think I have eaten since then in preparation for my next meal. So, be on the lookout for me, I'm marking this place down as my go to place to eat my next meal! Stay well! Yah
Delish. We tried the (special)omelet, French toast, biscuits and gravy, bacon and eggs. All were yummy! Home fries too! Adding to the rotation of our regular places. Been 2x in 2 weeks 😄. Friendly staff.
My family and I went here for Sunday brunch. Best breakfast I've ever eaten. Real stone ground grits, the best sausage gravy imaginable, thick cut smoky bacon, and fluffiest pancakes I've ever seen. Everything was wonderful. We can't wait to come back. Waitstaff was awesome, owner checked with us a couple times to make sure we were happy. Do yourself a favor and eat here.
This is a solid bet for breakfast. No frills but real, home-cooked food. Service is always good, they brought the kid's food out for us faster. They created a breakfast bowl for my friend who is vegan, no problem. Grits, biscuits, French toast, pancakes are all delicious. Definitely worth a visit.
What a surprise! Nestled in a Hillsborough neighborhood and super unassuming from the road -- this place was great! Food is excellent -- pancakes were thick and fluffy (they don't come with a whole lot of syrup but they will bring more if you ask), grits were perfect, biscuits were excellent, etc and so forth. They were slammed when we were there and our server was still very attentive. Awesome!
We are here for the holiday weekend and today is my husband's birthday, so we decided to try them for breakfast. Absolutely just awesome!!! My husband ordered the special Grits and Shrimp I'm not a fan of Grits so I passed and ordered Blueberry pancakes. He offered me to try them and was instantly regretting my pancakes choice, not that they weren't good just that was so awesome.. He actually gave me half and ate some of my pancakes .. Will definitely stop back here when we come at Christmas holiday..
We met out of town friends there for dinner. Everyone decided to go with their pizza special. We ordered two for the four of us. It as delicious and we didn’t save any for takeout. The lady talked us into sharing a slice of home made chocolate cake. It to was great and we argued over who got the last bite.
After driving by this place for a year , my husband and I decided to take a chance and try this restaurant. Upon walking in we were very surprised how cute it was. Please do not judge this place by the outside as it is a gem of a fine. The service was excellent , especially on a Saturday night , very busy and most of all the food was fantastic! Good comfort food that is delicious and beautifully displayed. Steak fried steak and meatloaf was the best ever and the banana pudding is a must to try. I can not wait to visit again and this will become our regular weekly dinner restaurant. We are very happy customers ! TRY EVERYTHING !
I really enjoyed the pizza I got from them. The Hot n' Heavy was well balanced and you could taste each ingredient. From what I understand they are expanding their indoor seating. They also have a few tables on the outside where you can eat.
Best breakfast around, best biscuits in the county, best grits this side of mamma. This was once the steamer-tray buffet that served the local mill workers. Classic over-cooked comfort food. But, new owners reinvented it as a wonderful, budget-friendly foodie joint. They first opened as breakfast only and hit a home run there. They've since branched out to lunch and dinner and both are well worth the trip. Its small, and there will be a line for breakfast if you show up after 8:30 on the weekends, but its worth the wait. My *only* complaint: the coffee. Its... lets just say its not to my taste. But, you can't be perfect at everything, and I happily concede the sub par coffee for all the other wonderfulness.
Love, love, love it here! The food is always delicious, the service is always excellent, and the atmosphere is so comfortable it makes me want to move in. This is the go-to brunch spot for my mom and me when we get together, although it's pretty out of the way for both of us. If you're ever in town and looking for a great meal, don't miss going to the Village Diner!
They're known for the Sunday brunch, but don't miss the pizza! We loved both the Funky Veggie and the Green Thumb. I like a thicker crust, but hey, that's just my personal preference. Even this thick-crust diehard loved their pies. We'll definitely be coming back soon.
I've seen this space transform from what it used to be, into what it is now, and couldn't be happier for something like it to exist in Hillsborough. If there's a downside, it's that West King St. isn't as walkable as the rest, so parking may become an issue at some point - but the food and environment can't be improved. Best pizza in town, easily.
Busy but efficient and a great menu selection. Everything taste great and is large portion sizes like you would expect from a diner. The food is a step up from standard diner though, rich and flavorful versions of the staples you expect. The BLT is so perfect in its distribution of contents, with perfect structure of the bread, it’s a must have.
Great diner for breakfast. Small dining area but they also have outdoor seating. The food was cooked perfectly and the wait staff made sure our needs didn't go unmet. I would go back!
Village Diner is well worth a visit. Their biscuits are outstanding. Whenever we are in town we make sure to stop for breakfast.
Amazing buttermilk pancakes and bacon! My group also enjoyed the Millworker's Breakfast and Build-Your-Own biscuits. The coffee was well above what you'd normally find at a little diner, and the mimosa was nice as well. The service was pleasant, and our waiter was very apologetic when my order got lost in the shuffle and came out late. We will definitely be back!
A delightful lunch was had by me and a friend. We we're traveling toward Durham. I search Yelp for a lunch spot. This came up and we decided to try it. Evidently from what I read there has been a recent change in ownership/management. There was great hospitality and delicious food. The dessert we split was especially awesome!! I hope to have the opportunity to eat here again soon.
We've made a regular habit of going on Sunday for breakfast/ brunch. I love the grits and also the French toast is a sweet treat we often split. We've also been for dinner and I think this might be my new favorite place for pizza in Hillsborough! It is on the smaller side and when it's crowded it's loud inside.
Started with a Ceasar Salad that was to die for. Our pizza was the Hot & Heavy. An absolute must try. Sat on the patio because the evening was perfect and our table was shaded. Service was perfect without being annoying. Very informative about the few beers they have, which was our only complaint. No beer selection at all. Otherwise, a definite place to hit for pizza when in Hillsborough. Say hi to Megan!
Gloria and Sarah are always so nice to us! We love to come and see them both every weekend! Food is always hot and fresh! Great mimosa!
Sarah is the best - super hospitable and welcoming! Try the pepper jelly, it’s great.
Absolutely amazing experience at this gem of a restaurant! The burgers are juicy and perfectly cooked, and the pizzas boast a divine crust with top-notch toppings. The drink selection is fantastic, with creative cocktails that perfectly complement the meal. Service is friendly and attentive, making us feel welcomed and valued as customers. Highly recommend for anyone craving quality comfort food in a cozy and inviting atmosphere!
Being newish in town it's nice to have a local diner-type place to go. My husband and I went for pizza last night, our third or fourth time going, and once again, awesome food. It was busy, as it should be for how great the food is. The servers are always super friendly, seem to know their regulars really well, and always have great suggestions on what to try. The food is really excellent, the specials are awesome and way more creative than you'd expect from a small town diner. We hope to be regulars here, so keep doing what you're doing!
Best diner in Hillsborough! Comfortable and great food always
All the food is stellar, food prices, great service. The pizzas are best I've had anywhere, including NYC, Chicago, and west coast. The crust is thin and crispy yet still chewy; the flavor combinations are surprising but always really balanced and delicious. Sandwiches and burgers are great, biscuits too on Sunday morning. The desserts are awesome sublime. Simple but amazing taste and texture.
Too many Good things to say about this dinner! Staff is Super friendly(even though there is always 5-15 min wait) Best part is the Food, the Cooks having Amazing Attention to Detail and consistency(as if they are cooking for there own family). I had the ham and cheese(Don't ever remember a better one), home fries are Awesome, Everything is Fresh, (Unforgettable Pancakes made from scathing!!w/ Fresh blueberries). Promise this will be your favorite place!
Great food and great customer service! Was looking forward to a Friday night pizza, but unfortunately my husband called in the order to the wrong place. I showed up during rush hour to pick up the pizza to find no order was received. Despite being super busy, the staff was quick to remedy the situation and put in the order which was provided rapidly. I really appreciate the way the staff handled the situation and I was back out the door 10 minutes later. The pizza here is phenomenal! Looking forward to trying the various other food options offered and checking out the live music during the warm weather months. Definitely recommend!
I was really nervous because we had never eaten at the Village Diner and when we arrived there were just two couples and one person at the bar. We almost left because how could a place so well rated be so empty? Maybe I'm wrong to judge a restaurant like that, but when you rarely eat out you want it to be good. 😄 Anyway, we decided to stay and enjoy our Valentine's dinner together and we have zero regrets! It was so yummy! As a bonus, it came out hot! (It’s so common my food is cold or obviously under a lamp for forever when we go out.) We shared a chicken bacon ranch pizza and didn't dare leave leftovers for the kids to beg for because we wanted it all to ourselves. We later heard staff express their shock at being so dead and we all concluded it must be because it's February 15 and everyone went out to eat the night before. So, lucky us! We got to enjoy awesome food and the place to ourselves!
Had lunch today and the food was delicious. We have frequented this restaurant over 7 years and have never been disappointed. If you're looking for a "go to" place for homemade freshly made food cooked to order in a warm, cozy and friendly setting, you won't be disappointed.
We were among their very first customers when the Diner opened after changes were made. We are regulars so.....obviously.....we are fans of the food. We do wish they would stabilize their server staffing. We have seen significant turnover and the actual dining experience is dependent, in part, on who happens to be working. Best tomatoe soup I have ever had!
Their pizza is great! We really like the atmosphere on Thursdays when they have live music. Sometimes the kitchen gets behind and there will be a bit of a delay is picking up takeout. Usually I grab a beer at the bar while I wait.
I did Sunday brunch. Breakfast was very good. (Ask for butter and molasses for your biscuit). So good. Everything I saw looked good. Staff was very friendly and helpful. We tried several different dishes so our bill was higher than average.
It was diner food, but slightly higher quality (less greasy) than some. The menu selection is somewhat limited. Staff was friendly.
Very good grilled cheese and tomato soup. Staff was a little overwhelmed yet friendly. Nonetheless food was really good. Coffee cup was covered in butter and sent it back. Read another review about the dirty dishes. You’d think they would pay extra attention to this but they didn’t. Still the food was good.
My husband and I had dinner last night in the new bar. The bartender was great. We both ordered salads, I had the spinach and my husband the Ceasar, with grilled shrimp. While the salads were tasty, the presentation left a lot to be desired. I guess I watch too much Food Network. :) The salad bowls looked like 60's woven wood. Mine had a big chip on the side. These salads would be so much more appealing on a white plate where all the ingredients would shine.
Village Diner is becoming a regular spot for us. The food is good - especially the pancakes, the ham and cheese omelette, and the biscuits with gravy. I even liked my BLT with pepper jelly and the hash bowl. But the grits I had last time were bland and a weird texture that made me stop the waitress and ask, essentially, what the heck is this? I’ve lived in the south my whole life. Those grits were memorably bad. But everything else has been good… if a little bland and in need of salt. We often have Gloria as our waitress - she is a SOLID professional who really elevates the experience from a “meal someone else cooked” to something the whole family looks forward to. She remembers our kid’s name and gets her excited to be there, no cheap crayons and kids menu required. My husband and I have - together - worked 25+ years in the food industry and I cannot say enough good things about Gloria. She’s the kind of waitress who encourages regulars and community in a restaurant. honestly, the food is fine but it’s the staff and atmosphere that brings us coming back.
Staff was okay but not terribly friendly or accommodating. The The potatoes with my eggs overcooked. Prices were good. It was okay but honestly said go to again
I'm not sure if they maybe have a day where they do a buffet but it had no buffet option advertised anywhere except on their Google maps listing. The food is limited: a pancake dish, French toast, a la cart, and some lunch sandwiches covers most of what is available on the menu. What food is there was decent and well made. Although I had a side of toast which ended up being oiled and grilled bread the same as it looks like they use for their lunch sandwiches. The price is slightly higher than your average breakfast place to match the quality of place that I think they want to be perceived as. To me, the prices were a tad high for the experience. The atmosphere is that of a small local place and it's got a small bar to match, it's nice. I'm not sure how crowded it gets but I could see it possibly getting tight if it were to fill up.
We had to wait about thirty minutes from when we sat down to order and finally receive our food. Thank goodness we weren't starving. The food was ok. But we will never go back. Sorry, nothing special.
Good atmosphere, lots of space, and a local business. However, I cannot recommend it as a local, although I am rooting for them as a neighborhood staple. The menu is not reasonably priced for their main items and portions, especially breakfast. Nothing in the menu stands out and no specific item makes me come back here just for that. For example: veggie omelette has mushroom, onion, and 3-4 spinach leaf in it with some cheese on top and potato wedges on the side. It's tiny and that's it. No unique sauce. Biscuits are small and several menu items are highly priced with the protein (i.e. a sausage) being an added cost +$3. Their hashbrown plate with sausage gravy (no sausages/patties) is $17. Ignoring price, food was cold, no sauces/toppings unless you ask (ketchup and salt/pepper I guess), and nothing in the menu is something that can't be found elsewhere (burger, basic omelette, hash browns, etc.) We waited 15 minutes for menus, 40 for food. Also very restrictive for people with dairy and other allergies. All items have cheese, but 2-3 menu items can get them removed. Other allergies I'm not sure since the menu doesn't provide much info around allergens.
The food is doing a lot of heavy lifting for that fourth star. Food was delicious, like really good. It’s farm to table. Portions were very small for the very big price. Two people eating breakfast at a diner should not spend 50$ no matter how good the food was. Service was not great, we were rushed through ordering and never offered a refill for our drinks, all while our waitress spent 10 minutes chit chatting at the next table with whom I assume were her regulars. Really disappointed because the food was so good but we won’t be back because of the service and prices.
Cute place and decor. Ordered the gravy and biscuits but sent it back due to it being very bland. Tried the Brule grapefruit instead, it was fine. If you are looking for large portions of food this is not the place. You also cannot order a mimosa before 10 a.m. Unfortunately I will not be a returning customer.
What could be a great lunch alternative in Hillsborough can't make the grade because of service and price. Certainly you can't go here and expect to get back to work in a reasonable amount of time. But make no mistake... this place does not offer diner food. It's good food and the four of us had 3 different dishes and everyone was pleased. I was not, however, pleased with the bill $57, before tip.
BLT didn’t have the LT? pizza crust was good but the toppings were so salty it was hard to enjoy. It was ok, not for the cost though. It was our first time, but probably won’t be back.
For me, this was a miss. Very Poor service, food was just warm. The food did have great flavor. Lots of outdoor tables, which was nice.
When we first walked in the hostess was a bit rude, then it took them 30 minutes and just only be able to take our drink order and then another 30 minutes to get two cups of water and a cup of coffee which was less than satisfactory. During our wait there were constant stares at me and my family (we are a minority family), as well as some unwelcoming gazes. When our 1 hour wait just to get our food order taken was over, and (though I could tell the waiter was trying his best) when our food arrived it was VERY bland. But, in all the experience was okay. And I am disappointed that I will be leaving this kind of review on this neighborhood staple.
We had breakfast here yesterday (Saturday). I ordered the pancake platter with blueberry topping. Since the platter doesn’t come with eggs, I added a side of eggs. My wife had the Millworker—the breakfast plate without pancakes—and said the food was criminally underseasoned. Portions were small for the price. Our kid had the chocolate pancakes and was happy with his choice. As for the service—it left a lot to be desired. Our waitress took our order, brought the food, and then never stopped by the table again. We had to flag her down multiple times just to get a coffee refill or more water. I don’t think guests should have to chase down their server for the basics. Overall, we will be choosing a different breakfast spot.
Coffee my wife had wasn't hot, Luke warm and no refill offered. Pricey for a breakfast! Won't frequent again

Had a 10 yrs old kid taking our order! Wow. All young kids working there. We just left
Our group was 5 adults and 2 toddlers so we understand we are a larger party so we aimed for our arrival to be after the brunch rush. When we arrived they said they needed to get a table ready for us. Understandable. We stood outside for 20 minutes with waitstaff coming in and out the entire time. A group of 5 walked in and was immediately sat so we decided to ask for an update on our table. The staff said our table had been ready, but no one decided to tell us? They saw us standing at the door. We get sat and a literal 11 year old (we asked) started taking our order. Nothing against his age but it was very obvious he didn’t know what he was doing. He took our drink orders and by the time he came back we were ready to order our food. He said he needed to go take someone else’s drink order who was just sat. So I waved down a different wait staff, told her we were ready to order, she just said “okay” and walked away. Eventually, the 11 year old came back and took our order. I explained that the 2 toddlers would need their food as soon as it was ready as they were hungry and tired of waiting. He said he understood. He takes all of our orders and sends it to the kitchen. 20 minutes go by, I asked for an update on the toddler’s meals and the waitstaff said it’ll be right out. Eventually they bring out ALL of our food. Not a huge deal but the toddlers were doing their absolute best to be patient. When the food is brought to our table every single order was cold. And my husband’s food was never even made. No one came by to ask if everything came out correctly or if we needed anything. We had to keep flagging waitstaff down to tell them we were missing food and that we needed refills on all of our drinks. The food was average, especially for the price. This entire experience was a huge miss on every level. When they first reopened they used to be so good. No clue what happened but definitely not planning on going back anytime soon.
I honestly hate leaving a bad review but our experience was that bad! I am hoping an honest review might help see that they have to do something different. Five of us went in looking forward to a late breakfast not knowing it would be after lunch time before we got anything. It was literally 1 hour, 25 minutes, before we got our food, well before we started getting our food… one plate at a time. Two had French toast and side of eggs and sausage. After asking if we would get any food soon they brought the toast and eggs out completely cold, but being so hungry they ate anyway. After they finished theirs, they brought some of the other plates out. When we were just finishing ours they brought the sausage to the guys that had the cold French toast! After waiting over 40 minutes we went and asked our waitress who was standing at the counter if we could please get our drinks. Sure she said, but it was at least 20 minutes before she brought them to our table 10 feet away. Many people walked out after seeing what was going on. When we asked the little waitress she said we are just really busy, but the part that was hard to understand was what they were busy with! There were several waitresses, none of whom ever bothered to bring our drinks, never once asked if we would like more coffee or anything. And we were right by the door from the kitchen but practically no food was coming out. The vast majority of the tables were people with no food. I 100% have NEVER had an experience quite like it!!! I don’t know what has happened here since we used to go and it was nothing like this…. Good food and good service but it was far, far from that today. I will say they charged plenty for this unique experience! 😂🤣
I do not usually leave bad reviews, but I am very disappointed as I try to support local businesses and I remember when this was a reliable local diner to get a good breakfast. I cannot really rate the food because we did not get any. Sat for an hour with no one checking on us, no refills on coffee, no food, and the very young waitress ignoring our efforts to flag her down. We finally got her to come over, asked where our food was, and after checking she said our orders had been "lost" and could we order again. We said no and walked out. I'm not sure who is running this place, but you need to at least be present in your dining room. It should not be this hard to get some bacon and eggs.
Really terrible experience where we waited nearly 2 hours without receiving any food. The staff was inattentive and we had to find our waitress and ask for an update after an hour, at which point they told us the kitchen was busy (which didn’t make sense because the place was half-empty and people who came after us were finishing meals). The people next to us ordered at the same time as us and were already done eating, but their orders came out wrong and they didn’t want to send it back for fear of taking too long. After another hour of no food we just walked out.
After eating at the Village Diner in person twice. We decided to order take out. This was a major disappointment because the portions were much smaller, the bread was soggy because the gravy was not separated for transport, and the customer service was unacceptable. We called the restaurant to complain and were told "sorry". Basically it sounded like they were "sorry" that WE could not be pleased. The person who answered our call was not sympathetic to our concerns. At an average of $20 per person, we found this response unacceptable. The Village Diner will not receive any business from us again.
Undercooked grits, I got a sheet of egg omelet but I ordered 2 eggs of over easy, not hot enough biscuit, all these hot foods were served on cold plate. The worst part is we got there around 12 am, and waitress informed us the restaurant would be closed by 1 pm. Huh?? Either they only welcome their selected guests but not everyone. Children run around and scream in the restaurant like a monkey. Their parents were bust talking. Is this called restaurant??
