This is a quaint small restaurant tucked back behind Lido Island on the peninsula reminiscent of Old Newport Beach. The food is southern style with a modern twist. Delicious. I would highly recommend this restaurant for lunch or brunch and my friend who was with me said they eat dinner there frequently. Definitely a must-go.
This place is a must go to breakfast place! The Bloody Mary was fantastic and I don’t even like Bloody Mary’s. The food was top tier and a decent portion size. Would recommend if you are in the area! The outside patio has heaters as well if it’s chilly that day, they will be on!
What a great restaurant. My friend recommended eating here instead of going to taco Tuesday and I’m so glad we ventured here. The trout was excellent as was the ahi (both pictured). The fried salad is a must as are the fried green tomatoes. Portions are large so it’s advisable to share and eat family style.
Just say yes to the cheddar pinwheels. OMG! Then for our meals…lobster stew and cornbread, red beans and rice, and a delicious pork chop with a fried risotto patty. This food is gourmet southern, not your auntie’s yummy slop. But it is every bit as good as auntie’s and likely prettier too.
Randomly stumbled upon this restaurant just looking for a new spot to try on the peninsula! And wow this place was fantastic! All of our food was extremely fresh and tasty!
Omg I had by far the tasting breakfast/brunch here in a while!! It was delicious and flavorful. The cocktail was just okay but the food made up for whatever was missing. The service was exceptional. I definitely want to go back and I wish there was a location with the same menu in San Diego, but for the level of tasty I don't mind driving to Newport Beach. You have to check this place out!!
We stopped by this restaurant for dinner one night during our trip to Newport Beach. This was a Thursday evening during the off season. We did have a reservation, but it was nearly empty at 6pm. We were immediately seated ( we chose outside seating in the dim light). The food was absolutely outstanding. We had the scallion cheddar pinwheels, fried green tomatoes, Mac and cheese with collard greens and cheddar jalapeno grits with shrimp and lobster gumbo sauce. Dessert was the jumbleberry biscuit and the apple beniets. If I would say anything, the service was really lacking; especially given there was only one or two other occupied table in the restaurant. We weren't checked on frequently and had to ask multiple times for drink refills.
10000/10 I truly cannot recommend this place enough. It is one of my all time absolute favorites, Every year when I come to Newport this is the place I beg to go to. It's a cozy spot with great service and THE BEST food. We come with a large group and everyone always leaves happy.. (it's not easy to find a place that has something for everyone but this is the spot!) Over the years we have tried a little of everything and I have not ever had something that wasn't delicious BUT my husband and I's favorites are- * The Maine lobster and corn chowder with corn bread. * Pulled Pork Sloppy Joes * Shrimp and Grits *Cinnamon and Apple Beignets *Chips and Salsa *Fries (You may think meh they are just fries, NO as an Idahoan potato champion.. These are fantastic fries!) I wish there was one in Idaho but I will keep stopping here Everytime I'm in Cali ❤️❤️
The place is very cute and the food was excellent. I ordered the Vanilla French toasts and they were the best I've tasted. Crunchy on the outside, soft and creamy on the inside, with the loveliest blueberry jam. However, the service is the highlight here! We were greeted with smiles from the moment we got in and everyone was incredibly nice and kind. I really appreciated that they didn't rush us eventhough they were busy. We were a group of 6 +2kids for brunch on a Sunday and our waiter was patient with us, checked in often and food came fast. Overall 10/10! Thank you ❤️
Definitely come here. Charming little spot what looks like an old converted house. The food was really delicious. The staff was all really friendly and had smiles on their faces. Highly recommend the crabcake Benedict. The coffee was good too. Will definitely stop back here when in the area.
Outstanding service, atmosphere food and cocktails. I visited 3 times on our vacation for breakfast, happy hour and dinner. The French toast were to die for, as was the fried chicken and cornbread salad. Highly recommend!
Food was delicious and their patio was dog friendly. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Tons of food options, cocktails, and drinks. Cute little hidden gem. Will be back.
First time and not the last! Excellente meal with amazing taste and deliciousness seasoning. Eggs platter with potatoes was magical. The toast with egg and avocado was tasty and yummy. The price range was 10-20. Excellente spot .. about 10 Min walk from the beach.. breakfast spot recommended !

We always enjoy our time when we visit Tupelo Junction! The food and service is always on point. Bria is usually our server and she is always friendly and happy to serve us.
Outstanding!! Best meal I've had out in a long time... Great service, generous portions, great flavors. Not the easiest place to find, but a true hidden gem. Highly recommended. And don't leave without having dessert...
Decent southern food in Newport. Who would've thunk. Their grits aren't the 5 minute kind, you can tell they have figured out how to make grits southern style. The collard greens are excellent and so is the fried chicken. They give you free rolled bread pieces or something of the sort but I couldn't stop eating them and we even asked for more. My southern accent came out a little when I left. Definitely will be going back soon.
Killer west-coast take on southern comfort. 10/10 recommend this quaint, victorian-esque hang restaurant. The food is on point, absolute must-try are the crab-cakes w/a nice pauted remoulade, fried chicken salad (with good hunks of corn bread naturally), pork chop, or if you're feeling something heartier, have the burger mid-rare, I would suggest opting out of the fries/salad for the onion rings- they have a killer batter with a side of their dill dressing. The service is fantastic, bar service great, and the owner is very hands-on and an absolute sweetheart. Tucked away in old-town newport, there is a very hustoric value to this area, close to the bay and off the main drag, an absolute must to both locals and out of towners.
It's always nice to try a new eatery and you're so glad you did! Lovely place, cozy feel. The mimosa and the bloody mary both came in a mason jar, the mary adorned with a stonecrab claw - wonderful! The fish n chips were tasty, a lot of food for being listed under "small plates". Can't wait to try other dishes. Very nice server. Not outrageous prices for the area. Lively atmosphere, yet not too loud. Will definitely go there again. Thank you for being a smaller eatery, cozy yet still having a couple of TVs to check on games😊👍
Quaint little restaurant tucked away in a neighborhood in Newport Beach, Lido Isle area. Crafty cocktail concoctions, savory and delicous food masterfully inspired with Southern influence. Bacon biscuits were tasty! Fun for a large group or just a date night out. Staff was well informed and friendly, attentive service. Making it a priority to visit again very soon!
I live in Los Angeles so coming down Orange County and spending the weekend with some friends I have no idea really were to go. However my girlfriend and husband live very close to this restaurant so as she made the suggestion, we pulled up I said "absolutely". When we walked in it was very empty at 6:30 a little bit more crowded before we left but a very surprised it isn't packed. The food is excellent, it's fresh it tastes like it's supposed to taste so it's not overwhelmed by too much seasoning. The mix drinks are off the chart good especially the marguerita to whichI added a little bit of jalapeno. Very comfortable lovely people great food!!
Absolutely perfect. Everything on the menu is not only beautifully presented, but absolutely top notch. We’ve traveled all over the place, and Tupelo is in the top three.
Wow! What a great breakfast! We had the veggie scramble and crab cake hash, both were delicious! Waffle was perfect, great flavor, not at all too crisp, again just perfect. Excellent service with Cassie.
Great breakfast! The cinnamon apple beignets are fantastic as is the vanilla French toast. Wife had the Dungeness Crab Cakes that she said were great too. Even the coffee was solid! And the service was that perfect level of attentive without being intrusive. One of my favorite breakfast spots in OC
We knew and loved Tupelo Junction when it was in Santa Barbara and are thrilled it is now closer to us... had small family birthday dinner party there last week and it's as fabulous as ever ... best Bloody Mary EVER and the Collard Greens are AMAZING as is the Mac/Cheese and the Fried Chicken ... hard to decide so we ordered some of most everything and 'shared' .. including the Mud Pie to wrap up the celebration with a bow! Thank you to all who made for a most memorable evening!
Such a great find! Wonderful location off a not-too-busy street, parking was pretty easy. The MOST accommodating staff! We were a large party with a reservation and they seated us immediately. An amazing southern inspired menu and yummy cocktails. It was a super quaint and relaxing atmosphere too.
Small quaint little cafe with amazing food and service. The owner is very proactive and always available to answer any questions or help accommodate for anything you may need. I would highly suggest getting there early for brunch and trying some of their signature dishes, I've been here twice and both times were amazing and to die for. I would recommend anything on the menu. It's a good size and not overly complicated like some other places, they work hard to perform and perfect the dishes so each one is one point and always consistent. Great for a date for two or if you just want to try something new with the family.
The place is super cute and kind of hidden. A wonderful date place for dinner. The food is excellent and very flavorful. The blackened salmon was flavored with just the right flavoring to make your mouth sing. The scallops with shrimp and cheese grits were delicious with the scallops nice and tender and each bite of the shrimp delicious. The grits were very flavorful and filling. The Bloody Mary was excellent and easily the best I have ever had. I really recommend this small hidden gem. The atmosphere was very empty when we were there but it has a confusing vibe of southern sports bar. Honestly though not a problem as the food is so good.
Great food, I had the eggs Benedict for the third time, its so good i can seem to order anything else. I also shared the spicey chicken and waffles, amazing very mild spice, amazing flavor and texture. Great service and the plain coffee is good.
Amazing place! The food is great! If you arrive before 6pm you can get both food and drink off the Happy Hour menu. Plenty of choices and everything is delicious! 😋😍 Service is also very good! Everyone that works there is very nice and friendly! The owner is Amy and is usually hanging around checking things out when she isn't cooking or mixing drinks, which are also phenomenal!
Simply delicious. Everything we ordered was phenomenal. Service was good and the atmosphere was nice and chill. Highly recommend the chicken and waffles and the bacon spinach onions etc scramble
Delicious food, great service. Best French Toast I've ever had and my wife loved their crab cakes and has. Cute spit right next to the harbor and a short walk to the ocean. Highly recommend this place! We love it.
Delicious food. I loved the attention to detail when it comes to allergen menu items. The owner was extremely helpful when I stressed to her that I have a gluten allergy. She told me she did as well. She recommended items on her menu that she specifically created for us gluten-free folks. I can't wait to come back and try other items on her menu. Thank you soo much! -M
I never leave reviews but I love this place and they deserve it. This place has the best breakfast on the peninsula. The food is great, but the people that work here make it amazing. Our waitress was so nice it made the meal even better. Can’t remember her name, but it’s such a nice breakfast when you have someone like her to interact with. The grits are so good and I will get them every time. Bloody Mary with crab claw is perfect. I love this place and will be back soon
This restaurant always delivers...good food, great service, and decent prices. We remember when they were located next to the movie theater, and the new place is great as well. The Spectrum cycles through restaurants, and this place has survived a long time. Highly recommend.
Stumbled upon this lunch spot while making site visits. The service was extremely friendly and the atmosphere was very clean and quaint. The food was a fantastic! I'd recommend the fried green tomatoes.
Food and service was excellent. I was surprised at the extent of the menu selections. We love Cajun food, and this place did not disappoint. Note: Make sure you pay for your street parking. I hear the fine would run a person about $75.00
Super cute, great food, good service. What more could you want? I wish they had a few more gluten free options, but other than that, I can’t find any faults!
This is definitely a go-to for us in Newport Beach. While the menu is daunting at first pass, it's also can't-miss. Everything is stellar. To start, consider "table beignets" for your party. Topped with cinnamon caramel apple sauces and crema, they are a perfect brunch starter to share. The crab benedict was delightful, plenty of crab, no skimping. Absolutely devoured the heuvos rancheros and smoked bacon scramble. The biscuit with that was spot-on perfection. Our boy also got the "kids version" of the dipped French toast with berry syrup and whipped cream. (We regretted the sugar intake later, but he loved it.) Only tried breakfast/brunch there so far, but if lunch/dinner is anything like it, we'll be back for many more meals. 5 stars, 10/10 would recommend.
I came here this morning for the first time and loved it! Our server, Bria, was super friendly and attentive. She suggested the crab cake hash and I 10/10 recommend. So good!
Food was great...fried green tomatoes, fish and chips and eggs Benedict. Drinks were great, too. We had last come here before the pandemic and moved away in 2021. Came back this summer and happy to see they bested covid. Next time the red beans and rice and shrimp and grits will be sampled...I expect they will still be tasty. Would have given 5 stars for service except the server told us she had to close out our tab because she had another job to get to. She needs to learn a different "out."
Amazing drinks (virgin blueberry mojito), had the ahi tuna and it was delicious!
Sunday September 8th was our first time ever visiting Tupelo. We never knew Tupelo was here until we stumbled across it as we walked around the backstreets of Newport. We are so happy we came across this hidden gem! We sat on the cute back patio and was instantly greeted by our server Bria. She made the experience feel like we were being served by a close friend. She was extremely personable, funny and suggested amazing options. We ordered the crab cake potato hash as well as the chicken and waffles. We completely finished every last bite! The food was absolutely unforgettable. Thank you Tupelo for the amazing food. Also a huge thank you Bria for making our first time phenomenal. We will be back and we will suggest to sit in your section!
The food is cooked to perfection and is so delicious. Our server, Jess, was so personable and nice. Our table ordered fried green tomatoes, 2 blackened salmon dishes, seared ahi, pear salad and the salad with blue cheese, and for dessert we got the best carrot cake. I highly recommend this hidden gem.
This was a wonderful little gem of a restaurant. Everyone enjoyed their food and the service was perfect, just the right amount of attention. Went on a Wednesday morning. Best dish was the crab cake. Not sure what my daughter had because she scarfed it down before I even saw it!
This place is awesome. Has a nice little back patio, it’s never too busy, the service is always stellar, and the food is great! It’s southern style food, which lends well to breakfast and brunch. Also, one of the best Bloody Marys around, so if you’re into that, you’ll be jamming here!
Great place near Lido. Not Mississippi related btw. Richard is a fun guy to know and has been our family’s go to server/bartender for great brunch. The other veteran staffers are nice as well. The owner is usually there every day checking in on you. Check out Tupelo Junction next time you’re looking for something good. You’ll be glad you did.
Very good southern food! A few vegetarian options. Good cocktails - I had an espresso martini. There was plenty of metered street parking on a summer weekend - which is a miracle but I heard that it’s common in this neighborhood. Lovely for brunch and a walk afterwards!
I got the chicken and waffles and it was fantastic! I didn't know how to feel about the gravy served on the side but I honestly felt it was perfect. When you think about chicken and waffles you think about the balance between salty and sweet. The chicken is the savory and salty side and the waffles and syrup is, in most cases, the sweet part of it. I didn't think about how the gravy would play into that equation but it turns out it's perfect. It's perfect to contrast a bite of emphasized savory/salty when you have waffles with gravy and chicken. Then you backtrack and get kicked over to the sweet side with that same bite, save the gravy, plus syrup. It's the perfect back and forth palette refresher. Definitely try it!
We stopped in for lunch at 3:00. We were waited on by the bartender at a regular table. We split a dinner of fried chicken. With mashed potatoes, gravy, roasted corn. Very delicious, well seasoned. Beignets were the bomb. Sorry, the Mrs couldn't wait for the picture. The back patio was very cute but temps in the 60s so we ate inside.
This is a great place to eat in Balboa. Southern style cooking and they nail it. Very cool atmosphere and the price is fair for such high quality food.
Great little place with a very homey feel! There is metered parking on the street that takes coins/credit card for parking. The food here is all so good, the chicken and waffles were crispy and moist, the orange juice is extremely fresh and delicious, and the huevos rancheros tastes as good as it sounds. Will be back to try a lot more of their menu.
🌟 If I could give 500 stars, I absolutely would.🌟 Tupelo Junction is a true gem — a place that immediately wraps you in warmth the moment you step inside. The friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere makes you feel like you’re being welcomed home, even if it’s your first visit. And the food? Amazing. Every bite is thoughtful, comforting, and made with heart. The fried green tomatoes in particular… wow. One bite and I was transported straight back to my grandmother’s porch in North Carolina. The flavor, the crispiness, the seasoning — it stirred something deeply nostalgic in me. It wasn’t just a meal, it was a memory. Beyond the food and ambiance, what truly sets Tupelo Junction apart is the staff. I lost a very special necklace there — one with enormous sentimental value — and the team went above and beyond to help me find it. They searched diligently, kept me updated, and returned it to me with so much kindness and care. That level of service is rare and speaks volumes about the integrity of this place. Tupelo Junction isn’t just a restaurant — it’s an experience. Delicious food, soulful hospitality, and genuine people. I’ll be coming back again and again.
One of my favorite hidden gems- Lovely owner and staff. French toast is a must!
Tupelo Junction Cafe is a total hidden gem in Newport Beach. Owned and operated by a mother and son, this cozy spot radiates charm, heart, and hospitality from the moment you walk in. We visited with our team and were seriously impressed—not just by the food (which was absolutely delicious) but by the genuine, top-notch service that made us feel right at home. Every dish was bursting with flavor, beautifully presented, and clearly made with care. The drinks? Just as impressive. Whether you’re local or just passing through, this place is 100% worth the stop. It’s the kind of place you almost don’t want to tell people about… because you want to keep it all to yourself.
I like it. They have vegeterian "potebelo mushroom" Waitress is awesome, she remembers everything we order. )
One of the best restaurants in the Newport area. Phenomenal food.
This is a hidden gem! We shared cheddar pinwheels, a red pear, candied pecan, goat cheese salad, the filet, and for dessert I think it was called huckleberry shortcake. Every single thing was so fabulous! The only bad thing is it's located here and I live in Texas! This place is great!!
Obsessed is an understatement. It was our first time and everyone was so nice! Our food was fast and delicious, and the mood lighting was fantastic. We had the scallion pinwheels, BBQ ribs, Jidori chicken, and beignets, and all of it was amazing. Our server recommended the Bees Knees martini and that was also fantastic and strong. The music was great! Whoever was in charge of that was playing banger after banger and we couldn't have had a better anniversary meal. Thank you so much for the great experience! Also, there's a cute art studio next door, Dana Ridenour Art Studio, and it was fun to bop over and see live painting before dinner. We will be back!
The service was great very attentive to us. Even though we closed them down for breakfast and lunch it was nice not being rushed out as others would have done. The food is home style which I loved good size portions. We will definitely be back again soon
What a joy! This cute spot is off the main drag but worth the extra few steps. Great food first and foremost. Attentive staff and delightful patio dining available. We will be back- we had the Pork Chop, lobster bisque, pork sloppy Joe's, cheddar pinwheel and fried green tomatoes. It was amazing. So grateful for finding this gem.

Decent food, nice location very quaint. The food is decent nothing exciting but refreshing. Wish there were more biscuits, the smoked salmon was good and heuvos rancheros was good as well worth trying. We had coffee that was alright.
Good food, slow service, decent atmosphere. Prices are on the higher side. Food quality is good. Portions are on the smaller side. Service was kind of slow. All in all I recommend trying this place out. I will be back just not sure when.

What a pleasant surprise. We were bummed when Tupelo left Santa Barbara and then we found them blocks from son's new home. Expensive for new grads but a nice place to treat for proud parents. Eclectic and tasty food served on a nice patio by a friendly staff. Grits, muffins, crab claw bloody Mary, egg dishes were all terrific.
Totally surprised to find this place, it looks like a house from the street. The food was pretty good, portions were reasonable. The waitress spent more time flirting with the guys at the table next to us than she did checking on us. Will probably come back to try more food from the menu. Breakfast was tasty
Really good replacement for the porch. Very similar vibe but a bit busier. Menu is a good size and the food is pretty tasty. There are some small touch up things that could go a long way with decorations (seems like they are still inbetween remodel jobs) but pretty good brunch spot for the peninsula
Great cajun/southern food. Typical hole in the wall/bar ambiance.
Overall liked the ambiance and menu. Sat in the patio area. The only down mark was I had ordered a cheeseburger and fries because I believe all restaurants can be graded on how they do their burger. I had asked for medium rare Plus and I received a well done Burger with french fries that were not cooked fully. I asked the waitstaff if they thought my burger was cooked to my request and she agreed that it was badly overcooked. She offered to have it cooked again but I was short on time. Now to the fries, they are hand cut, nice. But they were not cooked fully, they came out white and bendable kinda soggy. I asked if this is how they do their fries and she for the most part yes. I tried to add salt but the salt shakers are very miserly with this salt..it took 3 minutes to get it onto my fries. 😉 I won't be ordering another cheeseburger but there are some entries in the menu that are intriguing so l will be back for those...
I ordered the Huevos Rancheros with scrambled eggs - they use pulled pork. With my scrambled eggs request and their pulled pork, doesn’t make this a traditional Mexican dish but I enjoyed it for what it was- delish! I LoVe a place that serves breakfast beyond the AM! I ordered an Espresso Martini 🍸 ☕️ hey! It’s my birthday 🥳 🎂 why not?! I would come back again when I’m in the area.
I had a nice time. The place was cute, and the service was decent. My sloppy joe was very good. I also ordered the wedge salad; the lettuce tasted on the verge of turning - and the bacon was extra hard and overly smoky. With all the amazing restaurants in the area, it may be a while before I return.
The waffle was light and fluffy, but I wasn't really impressed with the chicken. The meat was tender, but the breading was too hard and dry ( not crispy at all) and falls apart. Not really worth the price. My server lady was really kind though.

The food tasted average, crab cakes we ordered were not fresh as such & even salmon couldve been better. Clam chowder was exclusively bad, it was watery & warm at best. The cheddar jalepeno grits & blackened shrimp was okay as well, shrimps were regular cooked & couldn't taste the cheddar & jalepeno grit. The Mai Tai was good but not great !!!
Have no idea how good the food is because we never received service. Sat down for 20 minutes with no response. Watched 3 other parties who arrived after us receive drinks and have their orders taken. My wife let the waitress know we intended to leave and she offered the most pathetic "sorry" I can remember. We walked. To be fair, the staff seemed overwhelmed despite it not being terrible busy (it was a Monday morning). Maybe they were short-staffed. Nevertheless I will never return. Also, semi-unrelated: the menu had soda listed for 6 dollars which is exorbitant.
I've been dying to come here because of the glowing reviews. Finally came here on a Saturday afternoon around 4pm for the happy hour menu (small plates). I ordered the cheddar jalapeno grits with blackened shrimp & lobster gumbo sauce. It took at least 15 min for the dish to come and lo and behold, it had only two shrimps ($10). The taste was ok but not great. The southern fried chicken I ordered had exactly two chicken strips for $10. The chicken tasted pretty bland. The beignet was good but not great. The food was extremely overpriced for the portion and value provided. Overall it was a fairly disappointing and subpar experience. The food was mediocre and the service was extremely slow and inattentive considering how few guests they had at the time.
You know what... here we go... I had my engagement party here. I signed the check and the party of 40 people. Since the moment I walked in I felt unwelcomed - and if I was inconveniencing Tupelo as well as my fiancé and family and friends. Love a family owned business - but they dropped the ball and the owner is rude. We asked in advance if table cloths or menus put on before the party is possible - and it was agreed to. When we arrived 30 mins before and it didn't happen we were greeted from the owner like we slapped her in the face for asking. We started the day with "is there a problem?" from the owner. Uh... yes... there is. We agreed weeks before via email that they could place them on tables - we provided them and dropped them - as they don't provide linens. My fiancé asked politely (while also apologizing for a late email) if they could put the menus down at the tables (the menus THEY printed which is standard operating procedure) "You sent that request late last night" was the response we got. A simple "we don't accommodate would be nice".. or just putting them on the table...... maybe? Our event was 2-5pm. We paid for this time slot. As of THAT DAY, we were supposed to be out at 4pm. My guests received their omelets at 3:40pm. We ordered at 2:25pm. I will never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever recommend someone comes here. If you can't handle a normal sized party of 40 people - then don't have them. Not one of my guests felt welcomed, I didn't feel welcomed, my mother in law didn't feel welcomed, my grandmother in law didn't feel welcomed. The moment I paid the bill we were showed the door - even though they have a bar that everyone was willing to continue paying beers/wine/alc. not interrupting incoming service. I thanked the staff profusely (the son of the owner and the waitress) provided them a $50 extra tip on top of 20% gratuity. I will add that I have worked at country clubs, fine dining, and dive bars. PS: after a professional follow up email the owner has wished us 'well on our marriages' and couldn't spell the word accountability or class. PPS: when you have 40 people from CA - NY- NJ - NV - AZ from ages 23-80 years old and they ALL have THE SAME feedback about the restaurant experience your classless owner should maybe LISTEN to the feedback. Stupid is what stupid does. Class: 0 Food: 8 Service: -10000 Good luck and figure it out ;).
I attended my friends' engagement party here with 30 ppl and I have to say it was one of the most uncomfortable dining experiences I've had. From the moment we arrived, it felt like the restaurant didn't want us there - the owner/staff was visibly annoyed when we got there. The vibe felt cold and unwelcoming from the staff which was understaffed seemingly, which was such a shame for a celebration meant to be fun and exciting. I was asked by the staff to help clean up The food itself was good, but it came out super late like 1.5 hrs late and some of us got our meals just as the party was wrapping up. Despite everyone being ready to keep celebrating (and spending more at the bar), we were basically kicked out. I felt for the couple and their families - they deserved much better service for such an important day. I would not recommend this place for a special event
I hosted my engagement party at Tupelo Junction Cafe in June, and while I don’t take lightly the act of leaving public reviews, this experience was so upsetting that I feel obligated to share — especially for anyone considering this venue for a special event. Despite confirming key details with the owner in advance — including setup, timing, and service flow — nothing was ready when I arrived. The tables weren’t set, linens I provided were ignored, and the flower arrangements were sitting in a corner. When I arrived, the tables had no linens despite the fact that I provided all the tablecloths and runners, and Tupelo does not supply linens themselves. Because Tupelo failed to do the simple job of putting these linens down, the florist I hired was unable to set up the flower arrangements properly. This was due entirely to Tupelo’s lack of communication and failure to fulfill their responsibilities. It felt as though they knowingly set the party up for failure. My fiancé, friends, and I had to scramble to get everything set up ourselves in under 20 minutes — while asking early-arriving guests to wait outside. It was messy, stressful, and completely avoidable had there been any basic communication or preparation. There was no point person present at the event — the owner left before it even began — and the only two staff members assigned to the party were visibly unhappy to be there. Both were cold, dismissive, and rude to my guests. Food came out slowly and unevenly, with half the table served while the other half waited awkwardly. And even though all our orders were submitted well before the kitchen cutoff, we were abruptly told our event was over an hour early, while food was still being served. The entire energy of the afternoon felt tense and uncomfortable — not celebratory. Nearly all of my 38 guests noticed and commented on how off the atmosphere was. The final insult came afterward, when I reached out to the owner directly with a calm, respectful email detailing what had gone wrong. Her response was not only dismissive — it was shockingly inappropriate. Instead of addressing the issues, she lashed out with personal attacks, including below-the-belt remarks about my relationship and future marriage. It was truly unhinged behavior from someone running a public-facing hospitality business. I come from a family-owned restaurant and deeply understand how much work goes into events and service. I also have a reputation in the community — both on television and social media — for supporting and promoting local businesses. I had hoped to be able to do that with Tupelo Junction. But unfortunately, this experience fell far short — not just in execution, but in basic human decency. If you’re planning a special occasion and want your guests to feel welcomed, supported, and celebrated — this is not the place.
I had a very bad experience at this restaurant during brunch. The total bill was $185. We intentionally wrote $0 tip and totaled $185 on the receipt due to the waitress’s poor service. She did not handle the table well and behaved inappropriately after my parent’s credit card initially declined. We clearly explained that the card only works when inserted, not swiped or tapped, but this was not handled professionally. Despite this, the waitress later added a $30 tip without our authorization, increasing the charge on my Visa card. This was not a mistake. The tip was manually added after the transaction. It also appeared she assumed we were not from the U.S. and felt entitled to add a tip. We live in San Diego, and this assumption is unacceptable. Adding a tip without customer consent is fraud, regardless of assumptions or personal judgment. I no longer have the receipt, but the restaurant has a copy, and the credit card company can verify the original amount. This behavior completely breaks trust. I would strongly not recommend this place and am disputing the charge with Visa.
