Food is exceptional, like a little bit of Texas in San Diego, service is excellent if you’re not familiar with BBQ they will definitely put you right. I would definitely recommend Coops. We ordered a little bit of everything and left happy , fulfilled, and ready for a nap.

"I’m still thinking about this beef rib. The bark was legendary—a thick, peppery crust that had a satisfying crunch before giving way to incredibly tender meat. The fat was rendered down to a buttery silk, and the smoke ring was a deep, vibrant pink. It’s a massive 'dinosaur rib' that manages to be both gargantuan in size and delicate in texture. No sauce needed; the natural beef flavor does all the heavy lifting here." 💯💯😋🤤♥️

If a man approaches you & offers you a sample plate of pork necks.. you should accept. This review does not hold me liable if you have to file bankruptcy over smoked meats though. Namely, smoked pork necks smothered in gravy, over rice. With a side of greens & a house made sweet tea. Pictured is a pulled pork plate with greens & potato salad. Pulled pork 10/10 Greens 8/10 Potato salad 2/10 Housemade BBQ sauces 10/10 Smoked pork necks 950/10 - unbelievably tender & juicy. suck the bone clean kind of good.

I had such a wonderful experience at this BBQ spot! The food was absolutely delicious — the brisket was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. You can tell a lot of care goes into how everything is prepared. The staff really made the visit special — they were professional, patient, knowledgeable, and incredibly friendly. They took the time to explain the menu and made sure we had everything we needed. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, perfect for families or anyone looking to enjoy a great meal in a comfortable setting. Overall, it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. I can’t wait to come back!

I am excited to have found Coop’s West Texas BBQ. My teenage sons and I ordered various things to try, including brisket, mac-n-cheese, potato salad, rice beans, cornbread, and peach cobbler. All of it was delicious, but the surprising winner was the spicy chicken. Coop’s West Texas BBQ is worth the trip. I also purchased a gallon of the sauce to use at home.

There are only 4 tables but the place is always packed and for good reason, the food is definitely made with love and skill. The BBQ is Top-Tier, pulled pork has a perfect smoke ring and the house made bbq sauce add to but does not overpower. To the say the house made Arnold Palmer is like others would be a lie. I have been to a plethora of BBQ places in So-Cal and Texas and have yet to have had better. Why are you still reading go get some. ❤️

Visited 23AUG2025 - First time but won't be my last time. I went at 11am, shortly after opening. Ordered the rib tip combo that included 2 sides, ¼-lb chicken, ¼-lb brisket, and an extra side of red beans & rice. There were enough rib tips for 2 meals. The rib tips were a little dry but tasty enough to smash them all. I chose collard greens and mac & cheese. The greens were good and the mac & cheese was savory. The chicken and brisket were perfect. Both were juicy, tender, and flavorful. I'd definitely order those again. I can't wait to continue exploring the menu.

A little bit of Texas in San Diego! Thank You Mr. Coop and your staff for all of your hard work that goes into preparing all of your delicious food! You are truly a gift. Service is always great! Food is exceptional!!! Treat yourself, friends, families to this amazing food! Because you will have to wait until next Fri-Sun to have it again! Do yourself a favor and just come on down wherever you might find yourself reading this. Thank You Coop’s for everything you guys do!

Best BBQ ever! I agree with their motto of "Legendary BBQ". The aroma hits you in the parking lot and tortures you until you get to eat! We love the pork ribs. The BBQ sauce is also amazing! The sweet is probably our favorite but the hot is great, also. (The heat builds and sneaks up on you.) You can't go wrong at Coops. Oh!! Their collard greens are absolutely bomb-diggity!

Visited Coop's BBQ for lunch. Had a pulled pork w/mac 'n cheese. Also, the brisket w/beans. Brought home the pork rib tips, brisket & another pound of pulled pork. Pics to follow. The place smelled like a BBQ/smoker should smell like. Perfect.

Love it when the community comes together to save a small business from fully closing. Coop’s is now open on Fri-Sun 10-3. CASH ONLY. We came on a raining Sat and was the first in line by 9:15am. We placed our order at 9:57am and got our order in 15 mins. Rainy day special of 10% off. We got a 1/2 slab pork ribs, 1/2 lb brisket, 1/2 lb jerk chicken, 1/2 lb sausage, candied yams, Mac n cheese, corn bread (requested corner piece) and sweet tea. Everything was so tender, moist with a smokey flavor of oak wood (they ran out of mesquite wood). The sausage and chicken was our least favorite. The pork ribs and brisket were our top two. The ribs had so much flavor deep into the bones and didn’t need sauce. Both had the right amount of fattiness. We asked for corner cut pieces of the corn bread to get the extra crispiness on the edges. Sweet tea is a must at bbq places. Be prepared to take on that pre diabetes goodness. My fiancé said it’s one of the best Mac n cheese he’s had. I’m not a Mac n cheese gal but I liked it bc it was cheesy without being cheesy. Know that Coop’s bbq is Texas dry rub style with a thin wet layer, not drenched in sauce. They do give you spicy and non spicy bbq sauce. Parking is in a small lot with tons of street parking. Four picnic indoor tables. Across the parking lot, there are outdoor seatings in the former Coop’s chicken and waffles building.

The ssssalivation is REAL! Coop knows how to do it right! His Q is legit. Tasty, tender, juicy ribs n brisket that don’t need any sauce. Every bite that slides off the bone has loads of smokiness. They go down like buttahh... But, le’me tell you, that spicy sauce is so dope. It’s bursting with so much flavor and adds some heat to the bites. It’s just a cherry on top of the sundae. So ask for the spicy sauce. It’s so good. Their sides are all great. Starting with that cornbread. The pieces are huge and perfect. They have the right amount of moisture that they don’t get all crumbly n crummy. So yummy! I could stop there, but I love their bbq beans that have chunks of pineapple. Didn’t expect that my first time there when they first opened. But I’ve been a sucker for it ever since. If you don’t want something sweet, the red beans n rice are also great. They even have chunks of the brisket in it. I must say, I never really had collard greens till I discovered Coops. I’ve had it since at other places, but I really like the way they make the greens here. I always gotta have it on my plate to complete my scrumptious meal. I usually order for pick up and bring my stash home for the fam. There is limited seating inside and outside if you can’t wait to get home. The tortuous drive is the hardest part for me! Thanks for keeping the legend goin, Coop! (The only drawback: the hours! Please stay open past 3pm. People don’t grab dinner before then. The business will at least triple if it stayed open to at least 6-7pm! And summer is coming! I’ll do (5) stars for service then. ; D )

This is the best BBQ place I've found not only in San Diego county, but anywhere outside of Texas. Anyone who raves about Phil's BBQ needs to try Coop's. Phil's ribs without BBQ sauce are bland and fatty. Coop's ribs are lean, smoked, and super flavorful without any BBQ sauce. When you add one of their BBQ sauces, it takes the flavor to another level way better than Phil's with BBQ sauce. My other favorites at Coop's are the homemade Texas sausage, and the tender and flavorful jerk chicken. Coop and his staff are very friendly and eager to answer questions for first timers. Update: Got a pound of Texas sausage and a medium potato salad, both excellent. Update: The boneless version of the jerk chicken is back! Got one pound each of Texas sausage and jerk chicken, plus a medium side of potato salad. Everything was excellent! 5 stars! Update: Got 1lb Brisket, 2lbs Jerk Chicken, and a medium potato salad. The brisket was tender and juicy, but less flavorful than in the past. Maybe a little dry rub would make it great again? The jerk chicken and potato salad were excellent. Our friend got the Spuds N' Que with Brisket and liked it. Update: Got 2lbs of Texas sausage. Excellent as usual. First visit in 2023, and the girls were super busy putting together orders, so left a 30% tip. Update: Got the Texas sausage and it was excellent as usual!

Coop's BBQ never disappoints! I have been here several times over the years. A friend of mine was craving some BBQ for her birthday and I recommend Coop’s West Texas BBQ. We ordered half a rack of ribs, 1 pound of sausage, half a pound of pulled pork, corn bread, white bread, and a large order of mac and cheese. Everything was delicious! The ribs were fall off the bone good, the pulled pork was juicy, the corn bread was moist and not dense like some other spots, and the sausage was peppered just right. Each dish had so much flavor, what a meal. There are no tables(or seating) inside the restaurant, so be prepared for just take out. We ate at some picnic tables across the parking lot. The customer service was also excellent. Suemi was friendly and helpful. Coop's is a Lemon Grove Institution and my favorite BBQ in San Diego. I can't wait for my next visit. Eat up!!!

Look I loved this place, the staff were super friendly and they gave out free refills just like the they do in the south. Sadly the barbeque itself was the only thing stopping it from being a five star experience. I love BBQ and this place was good but it just didn't meet my high expectations, the ribs and brisket were not as moist as I would have hoped, there wasn't enough flavor in the meat it definitely was there but you had to struggle to find it, I felt like it need sauce which isn't bad but good barbecue shouldn't need it. The drinks were great and the sides were exceptional everything was good but just a little let down by the BBQ itself.

Had the brisket with Mac, first time seemed the food quality was above average, a friend and I had the same combo, he had coleslaw. Both sides seem good. Didn’t get a chance to try any of the other food to explain. Sauce seemed above after, no tang or spice. Not sure if they have other flavors. Enjoy

I visited in July 2024. I stayed at NAS North Island, Coronado for helicopter technician training with the South Korea Navy. I came here twice with my Navy buddies. The BBQ was awesome, the beer was cold, and the staff were super friendly. It was a really great experience. Hey servers! Do you remember the stylish South Korea Navy guy who gave you Korean cash as a gift back in July 2024? 😄

I would say it's only okay. I've tried Texas bbq at places ranked in the top 3 on the Texas Monthly and of course it can't compare with those but the meat wasn't that appetizing, just average. The sides also need improvement, especially the Mac n cheese. Was not good. Pricing is pretty standard, Texas bbq is always expensive.
