John's Char Burger Livermore Reviews
Loved it! It's the closest that I've been able to find, a really good cheeseburger and fries that reminds me of a childhood restaurant at the corner of the street where I grew up, called Happy Hound. I miss that place. I will be returning, maybe to try a chili dog.
The burgers are great here and prices also great considering how expensive food has gotten. I feel like the building could use some updating or upgrading, but if it keeps the prices down, then so be it.
Been eating here my whole life as a Livermore native. Took my husband here for the first time and he was wondering why I was “holding out on him” for so long every time we were back in town. Tastes like an authentic backyard burger, and you’ve got to get their fries and onion rings. If you’re looking for a nostalgic burger experience, this is the place! Happy to support local and delicious food. (We visited twice in the 5 weeks we were in town)
I’m an In n Out fan for many reasons, including price and consistency. But I have to say during my stay in Pleasanton my visit to Joh’s became my first visit of many. Their burgers may be the best I’ve ever had. In fact, while typing this I’m wishing for another!
We order the 2/3 double char burger with fries, onion rings and fried shrimp. Burgers were great and well seasoned. The onion rings and shrimp were fried to perfection. Too many fries, not enough time. I will definitely be back there again.
Paying $2.90 for bacon on a burger and not getting it is crazy. Not worth the drive back as it was a to-go order. I don’t make it a habit to rummage through a bag of food before I leave otherwise I would have noticed it. Edit: I appreciate the owners urgency to try and fix the error. Not sure when I will be back but is really showed me that they care about their product and customers. Appreciate that! Review adjusted.
Update 03/03/2023 It had been a while so I ordered the 1/2 lbs. burger which is with two patties, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. Wow, why did I wait so long:). It was delicious. fresh, hot and tasty. If you haven't tried this place and like burgers, do yourself a favor and try it, you will not be disappointed. By the way this burger was $8.75, CRAZY! Absolutely one of the best cheeseburgers I have had to date and there has been a few all over the country. The patties were cooked to perfection with melted cheese all over. The produce used was fresh. The flavor was outrageously good. I will go back for sure and take family and friends. 07/29/2022 Update- Today it was even better than the last time. you taste the care they put into their food. Burger is well seasoned, the bun is fresh and the greens are fresh as can be with good quality dill pickles. I absolutely enjoyed my lunch very much. Did I mention the burger was only $7.80 including tax? There you go:) YOU NEED TO TRY THIS PLACE, I PROMISE YOU WILL LOVE IT.
If you're looking for something fancy you need to find a different place; However, if you want an old school style hamburger and other like comfort foods, you need to try this place out. What a great burger with that open fire char flavor that I love and with fries that are pretty darn good too. More matchstick style then most places, but they are very good.
Don't let the facility exterior turn you away. A very unique location with walk through order window and interior with a homey/old time feeling inside. The facility did have some strange issues like the chairs being a little warped, but good food at a good price. Lettuce wrapped burgers were wrapped thoroughly and didn't spill. Service was helpful and attentive as well.
Had bookmarked this place for a long time. Finally had a chance to try it. Maybe it was because of a weekday lunch, I did not have to worry about parking. But seems like there is enough parking. The place did not disappoint and satisfied my burger craving. My wife is not a burger person so she had a ribeye sandwich. She thought it was okay and wished it was an actual piece of steak. lol The onion rings were not as good as I had expected. I thought they would be bigger rugged pieces so I’d taste more of the onion, but the batter was half of it. I would certainly come back for the burger. Perhaps gonna get the 2/3 lb next time.
The burgers are a classic diner style cheesy and and delicious. The beef is juicy, bread is airy, and the beef has a great smell with a light yet noticeable and tasty char to it. Feels like a real backyard burger from the past. The fries were also very tasty and fresh, made when I ordered it and had the perfect combination of crispiness and fluffiness. The entire burger itself is only off 1 star due to a lack of anything extraordinary in terms of flavour but it is an otherwise terrific burger that I highly recommend, definitely hits the spot.
