Rivera's Long Beach Reviews
Rivera's took over a long neglected Italian spot on 7th St. many years ago. The facade does not do justice to the wonderful autintica inside. There is the little grab and go counter on the Gladys Ave side, but I've met people who didn't know about the dining room and banquet room. Family owned and operated. Real food. Solidly delicious food.
At Rivera's, the authenticity of the food, attentiveness, politeness and best prices were outstanding! I really wish I would have taken pictures of all our delicious hot plates. You too will be amazed once they start serving the wonderful food! For a party of 8 including cocktails the pricing was excellent. We were all deliciously satisfied! This is one of those hidden gem cozy places with awesome authentic Mexican food so , (like my big brother would say,) never judge a book by its cover. Sincerely, Dave G.
Ambiance; comfortable and clean Service; attentive, friendly & inviting But go for the large bowl of "POZOLE" you can taste the 30 years of experience in the most favorable broth, hominy, tender pork with all the fresh vegetable "fixings." With these cold Winter temperatures nothing is more warming and comforting. The Best 😋
The food was easily 11/10, I came here with my partner one night because it was close by our new place and ended up loving it. They have a takeout section or a dine in section, we did take out but I would love to dine in soon.
Went for the menudo, because of the excellent reviews, let me tell you it was so good lots of flavor and lots of meat ,the service was excellent they greeted me with the chips and salsa. Really hot chips and Great salsa. Definitely coming back
If you're searching for authentic Mexican food then look no more! Great all around Mexican vibe. The food, decor, service, all top notch. Would definitely be back when coming through Long Beach again.
The food is Awesome as always. It been our family tradition to order the catering sizes burrito every Christmas eve and big family gatherings. The customer service is wonderful and friendly. The atmosphere is warm and colorful.
Wonderful, family owned restaurant! It's a charming, friendly place with excellent food! They do a fantastic job with catering and have a room for very large groups at the restaurant. We highly recommend Rivera's!!!
The food at the establishment is always fresh and delicious. Everything is homemade with good generous portions. It is a family owned restaurant with a small staff but very friendly . Even the carryout portion has the best Mexican food. My husband adores this place and I like it very much. If your looking to have a generous and good food, make a trip to Rivera's.
My wife and I have been going to this quaint little restaurant for close to 20 years, and we have not been disappointed yet. The food is superb, as we started off going in for burritos and have now elevated our palates to Fajitas, Pozole, Chili Colorado, and Chili Verde (all recommended dishes by the way). Rivera's is a family run business where they pride themselves on excellent customer service. Since we've been going for so long, we have met the entire immediate family, and we are all so happy when we see each other. Rivera's also caters, something that they have done for our family and jobs many times. Additionally, they have a space available adjacent to the restaurant for small parties, which we have also used several times for baby showers and surprise birthday parties. I recommend this restaurant 10 out of 10. When you get there, please enjoy the music, all of the art on the walls, and ask for George; tell him that Ray and Mari sent you. P.S. Please don't be deterred by the price, as the $50 to $100 per person was because we ordered Guacamole, 2 cups of Pozole, 2 Mango Margaritas, Combo Fajitas, and Chili Verde. We also ordered a cup of Pozole to go and Flan. Our price was much closer to $50 per person than $100. The food is quite affordable for the amount that you receive and worth the price.
The food is super terrific! George and Mrs George are excellent hosts, always make customers feel warm and welcome. And the prices are right to boot. Of course the parking is a problem, but overcoming it leads to great food in a most friendly restaurant!
WOW absolutely amazing experience here! The food is great & the service is even better! They really take care of you while you’re here, always full drinks. George was an amazing server! Definitely coming back when I’m the area.
Very cozy, great music, and amazing food!!! Loved it!!! I come from a Mexican family that loves to cook so we know good Mexican food from not so good. Unfortunately not to many Mexican Food restaurants have quality food. Also, our server was kind, fast, and just awesome! I will definitely make it out to Rivera's again.
It looks like nothing special from the outside. But once inside, it’s easily classified as one of those “hidden gems”. The staff is attentive & happy to be of service. And any slight modifications to an order aren’t a problem either. Portion size for the burritos that my date & I ordered were more than ample & leftovers were definitely taken home. And yes, the food is delicious.
This restaurant is a hidden gem in Long Beach, ca!! When we walked in we were greeted and sat at a table. Great customer service! The food was delicious! It was like going to someone's house for a mexican dinner! The decorations and music was wonderful! I definitely will be back!!!
I am writing this review to express my deepest gratitude for Rivera’s Catering, who went above and beyond for my wedding this past weekend. They weren’t just caterers; they treated us like family. From start to finish, their kindness and professionalism were unmatched. No matter what unexpected issues came up, they handled everything with grace and without hesitation. When we had an unexpected problem with the venue’s linens, George and Ana immediately stepped in to help, providing extra linens without a second thought. Their quick thinking and willingness to go the extra mile saved us from what could have been a stressful situation. As for the food—our guests are still raving about it! The beef Colorado was a huge hit, and many of our friends and family couldn’t stop talking about how delicious everything was. We also requested coffee for our reception, and Rivera's graciously provided it, adding a warm and personal touch that we truly appreciated. I honestly can’t thank Rivera’s enough for their generosity, impeccable service, and attention to detail. If you’re looking for a caterer who not only delivers amazing food but also treats you with care and kindness, I highly recommend Rivera’s Catering. They will not disappoint!
As soon as you walk in, it smells like heaven. They are always so friendly, and the food is always delicious. They're my favorite Mexican spot in long beach! They've got a good number of vegetarian options too. Their veggie burrito actually has vegetables in it too rather than just being beans and rice.
The food here is amazing! I highly recommend the beef chimichanga, it is one of the best ones I’ve had! We went around 4 before the dinner rush and the staff was very friendly and attentive. I will definitely be returning the food was quality and the atmosphere was great!
Fun, funky, mexican restaurant with faux vines on the ceiling and different fruits hanging from them; my daughter turned it into a game to find them all. The art work is great, and there is plenty to look at while you wait. The food is delicious! I had the shredded beef quesadilla and my husband had menudo. He was happy that he could order it without the hominy. We will return.
We went there for lunch with Chef Paul. It’s a cozy spot with sweet decorated interior. The food is delicious (and I am not a fan of Mexican cuisine ;-)) we could adjust our dish so I think it was awesome!
I don’t eat cheese — it makes my face break out. So I ordered a meal without cheese, and ordered that way, the flavor wasn’t great. I told my waiter (one of the Rivera family), and he wanted to bring me something else. I looked at him carefully to see if he meant it, and I could tell that he did. I told him I would think about it. When he came back, I told him I was thinking about the beef enchiladas, but worried that without the cheese, it wouldn’t be that good. He assured me that they would be flavorful. I said ok, and took them to-go. I’ve just eaten the beef enchiladas, and he was absolutely right: they were “¡Rico!” I enjoyed the food, appreciated the recommendation, and I’m now happy about the fact that the server insisted on getting something for me that I found delicious. I can’t imagine how tough it is to run a successful restaurant, and I feel they went above and beyond to make me happy. And the 3 Leches cake is also the bomb! I’ve only ever had 2 of them that were this good (in probably 30 years)!
Menudos good , slow service took long to get seated on a empty Sunday
I think we’ve been coming here for the menudo since 2009? It still is some of the best menudo around. I just had the Albondigas the last time we stopped by, very good!!! I was not disappointed.
George was gracious enough to host my small family group (less than 20) in his banquet room. The buffet lunch with carnitas & chicken fajitas was delicious - the chile rellenos especially fluffy & tasty but the warmed tortillas, guacamole, salad & desserts - churros with chocolate sauce, creamy flan, super creamy tres leches cake & cheesecake all great! We were kept well supplied with yummy drinks like jamaica & horchata as well as iced tea, lemonade & soda. Service by George's wife, Ana & daughter, Lia was excellent. The space itself was lovely with linens & lights & nice latino music. Highly recommend for a family gathering or special event!
The atmosphere and service were great and the food is authentic and absolutely fantastic. Authentic Mexican food that, so I'm told, is made by mom and dad working in the kitchen. Even with a rowdy group of 7, service was quick and very friendly. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Long Beach!
Absolutely love riveras! What a wonderful restaurant for authentic Mexican food. The service top notch and food out of this world. I highly encourage anyone in long Beach California to go try this place. Been here for years and always visiting as we can't get enough of their menu.
Stopped by for some beans and rice to complement breakfast and a few churros. Friendly staff and delectable churros and awesome beans and rice!
This is a great place for authentic Mexican food. The food is excellent. The customer service is always on point. Plus it’s family owned you can’t beat that! The atmosphere is very cozy and once I’m there I never want to leave. I also went to a wedding there once and it was so much fun.
We found this place for 4 years ago and it has grown is us so much that we frequent it regularly and absolutely love going there. What is most impressive is how the great service and excellent food quality never disappoint. Rivera’s has Pozole and Menudo everyday -unlike a lot of Mexican places where both or one are only served on weekends. Honestly, every item in their menu is very tasty -you can’t go wrong with anything you order. Also, if you’re looking to host an event and you wish to give Mexican food to your guests, Rivera’s can help. My family had an event there and they all loved the experience and the food. What’s best is that you’re allowed to decorate the annexed space. It is cozy; we all had a blast eating and dancing. Only downside perhaps is the parking, but consider using across street parking and you should be fine. You could also recommend guests to carpool (as we did) to minimize vehicles -just a thought.
I’ve been missing out by not going here until recently. The Teco burrito is my favorite in Long Beach. Downright delicious.
Thank you for the outstanding service you provided for our Chicano and Latino Studies Banquet. The graduates, their family members, staff and faculty enjoyed the delicious buffet and service. The server was very attentive and friendly. George you went out of your way to accommodate and set up the banquet room and we truly appreciate it. We will definitely use your restaurant for future events.
This is home cooked Mexican food at its best. The red enchilada sauce is made in house and is the best!
What an incredible find! This family-owned Restaurant is something spectacular. The food is incredible and the service is excellent. Jorge is a scholar and a gentleman. I went here to explore options for a corporate meeting and left knowing that this is going to be my new go-to place on Sunday. The menu options are endless and I am super happy that we found this place! Thank you Jorge and staff for your awesomeness!
This little place is special, best pozole i had in long beach so far.The shrimp and fish tacos are delicious too. Customer service is top-notch.Our server Jorge was very attentive and pleasent to have around; He made sure table was always clean and we had everything we needed. P.S. their chips and salsa are amazing!!
Great, hole-in-the-wall Mexican! We were visiting from out off town. I got the Asada Wet Burrito. It was tasty, authentic and huge! I couldn't finish it... which is saying something. My wife got the Chicken Fajitas and loved them. Salsa had a great flavor. Staff was very friendly. Parking and seating is very limited, so takeout might be your best option.
It was cozy and delicious. A nice, quiet(ish) spot in a bustling town. They keep up with the demands and make things from scratch. The pozole (pictured in this review) and menudo are fantastic. The staff are very friendly. This restaurant is the namesake of Diego Rivera, a very influential artist of modern Western Civilization. The artwork inside is reminiscent of this fact, sporting visages of his art work. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and I will be returning. The only down side was the parking situation. But the for was well worth that struggle.
Absolutely one of the better Mexican restaurants I’ve been to Their hospitality is unmatched They food is amazing, the portions are over filling 10 out of 10 experience Family owned and run , the waitress was so kind and helpful. Definitely coming back
First time being here. Stopped in for a late lunch so wasn’t so busy. The decor is Latin style and a lot of cool stuff to look at while you’re there. Learned that Rivera’s is family owned and operated, the mom and dad were in the kitchen while their son was handling the front of the house. Let me tell you that once I tasted the food I felt that I was back in Mexico having abuela’s homemade Camarones a la Diabla, this is my go to plate when trying new places and I could not be happier with the freshness and preparation of this plate from Rivera’s. I will defiantly be back and try other dishes.
We’ve been coming here for years and this feels like family, that makes the best specialty Mexican food. Hubby calls it comfort food and has his fav, stuffed chicken burrito wet. Gorgeous shredded chicken, cheese, beans, all made fresh daily. My fav is the fresh made secret recipe albondigas. Fat meatballs floating in the perfect broth full of veggies, spices, fresh chopped onion and cilantro topping. Riveras service, the best. Yep, it’s a habit we’re keeping. Don’t forget the margaritas!
Great food! You can tell its all made with love, the flovors are so fresh. There's so much to look at in the restaurant, I love the inside. Service was on point! They have pozole and manudo all week! Only downside I see is beers are kinda expensive for bottle beer but not a biggie. The food is that good!
This is a family owned and operated business and it is a great place to come have a meal. They have lots of art pieces on the walls and the food is great! Be patient however as it can get very busy and there are lines during the weekend, but it is most definitely worth the wait. If you are in LB you gotta give this place a visit.
I wanted authentic Mexican food and what's more authentic than sharing the same last name 🙂 The service was impeccable! I only ever eat my moms tamales but decided to give this place a try because the energy & vibes told me it would be worth it The beef tamales were very flavorful w/ the perfect masa to meat ratio!! Can definitely tell someone's momma had a hand in making these delicious tamales! Homemade was in every bite!! Delicious!!!
I almost don't want to post a rating. I don't want them to get flooded when influencers and travelers. The food here is that good. I remember the days of food that was actually seasoned and not just over salted. Rivera's takes me back to those days. The beans don't look like someone already chewed them. The rice has good flavor and they put more than a strand of chicken in the enchiladas. I will never waste my money or calories on any other place.
This place is a gem. I really loved the atmosphere at Rivera’s—the vibe, the photos on the walls, and just the overall feel of the spot. I didn’t catch our server’s name, but he was super cool and made sure we were taken care of the whole time. I came in pretty hungover and had heard they serve really good menudo… and I’m so glad I listened. As soon as I walked in, I heard a lot of Spanish being spoken and saw multiple tables ordering menudo, which felt like a great sign—and it absolutely delivered. This is some of the best menudo I’ve ever had, hands down. It seriously cured my hangover. I was also stoked to see they carry my favorite Mexican beer, Victoria, so I had a little hair of the dog to go with it. Perfect combo. My girlfriend ordered a margarita and it was delicious too—fresh and well made. I’m really happy I found this spot and I’ll definitely keep coming back, especially for that menudo. The fact that they even offer patas with the menudo just takes it to another level. Highly recommend!
I came here today to get some good authentic food. I got more than I bargained for! The food is amazing!!! The restaurant is beautiful and the staff is the best I've had in a long time. Absolute MUST visit!! And it family owned!!
Tried menudo for the first time here tonight and absolutely loved it, especially with the little bit of hominy, fresh lime, onion, and cilantro! The shrimp ala diabla was also fantastic, perfectly spicy and so full of flavor, and a super generous portion. The tres leches cake was luscious but not too sweet and was a great way to cap off the meal! If I lived in the area I would absolutely make Rivera's a regular in my restaurant location!!
It was an absolutely amazing discovery and fantastic food and service. Portions were big and delicious. The servers were extremely nice and welcoming with great recommendations for what to eat. Unlimited nachos and tasty salsa while u wait for your amazing food. We were very delighted and thankful for finding it after our cruise and traveling. The atmosphere was very cute and filled with mexican art and the iconic Frida.
The food is so delicious! The staff did a great job on keeping the drinks filled and the chips and salsa flowing. The food was amazing! So much flavor. Highly recommend this restaurant.
We absolutely loved it 😋😋 super super delicious. This is a charming and quaint spot. Family owned and operated and you can feel and taste the love. I also love all the Frida Kahlo art on the walls. Try not to fill up on the delicious house salsa and chips. I had the 2 enchiladas ( one beef & one chicken w/ rice and beans. My husband had the chilaquiles. He said it was the best he's had in a long time. They also have a take out and catering service. You won't be disappointed. We weren't and we are fussy 😂
carne asada with tortillas. substituted rice and beans for vegetables and made it all that much delicious. Was afraid I couldn't finish it all. Whoever was the waiter was fantastic. Always checking up and making sure everything was OK. Felt like I was at home with my brother serving me after being away for a bit. Thank you.
Last take-out order is 7:30 pm and dining room closes at 10 PM. Food tastes authentic here. I like that they don’t skimp on veggies and herbs like other Mexican restaurants. It makes a difference. Everything taste home-made: cooked with love. Chicken Tortilla soup: 5/5. The best I have ever tasted in my entire life. Carne Asada wet burrito: 5/5. Carnitas wet burrito: 4/5 only because I like my carnitas pulled And theirs was too Chunky for My liking. Chicken enchiladas: 4/5 Chips and salsa: 4/5 due to preference. Chips are freshly made but I prefer pico de gallo and theirs are fresh but made with only herbs and tomatoes. I would give them a 5 if their salsa has onions in them.
I've lived in Long Beach for 10 years now, and never bothered to try this place out... shame on me! Finally visited last week since I heard they had a good wet burrito. I was not expecting to visit a place with amazing decor and atmosphere. This place is easy to miss given how busy 7th street is. The neighborhood is a bit run-down and parking may be a small challenge, but don't let that stop you from giving this place a shot. As soon as you walk in, you're surrounded by classic Mexican pictures, decorations, and an overall amazing atmosphere that takes you back to simpler times. They have an express entrance for to-go orders and one for the actual sit-down restaurant. My server was incredibly kind and attentive. I ordered the wet burrito and got a sizable portion. It had the perfect ratios of meat, sauce, cheese, and rice. The server brought a load of chips and salsa, which is always appreciated. It was also a nice touch to see that they had Bohemia. Not many Mexican restaurants in the area have that beer, so I definitely ordered one. As good as the burrito was, the flan stole the show. Everything from the presentation, freshness, to quality was unbelievable. Great place to visit and I look forward to coming again.
Such a great spot for excellent Mexican food. I would highly recommend this place. I had the special of the day (2 carnitas with rice and beans) and it was excellent. The other people in my party highly enjoyed their meals as well. Their shredded chicken was some of the best I have ever tried and was so moist. The staff was very nice friendly and attentive.. The restaurant is quaint so I would recommend calling ahead for a reservation to make sure you can get in. They do have a to go counter so you can order and take it to the beach. House salsa is also delicious and very flavorful! Looking forward to coming back again. Only downside is the parking is a little sparse so plan ahead to look for parking.
Great little local hot spot. Food was delicious! George and Anna Rivera are super sweet people who provide great customer service. The albondigas soup with all the fixn’s (cilantro, rice, onions, lemon and green hot sauce) was especially yummy. Their mango and Cadillac margaritas were excellent.
My boss recommended this place, said it had better Mexican food than Mexico. I loved it. The service was extremely fast and friendly. I ordered the wet shredded beef burrito, it was huge! I had also ordered a chicken taco, not realizing how big the burrito would be. Both dishes were very tasty, spicy but not overpowering. The complimentary chips and salsa were also good. The prices were good, too. I will definitely come back here next time I'm in California.
Good place to have a birthday party. Good food, good service, Mariachis and plenty of space to hold a large group of people. I personally have not gone just to the restaurant but I know it's my aunt and uncle's fave Mexican food place in Long Beach. All my review is based on is there hall, party space, service and party buffet.
Good was ok - nothing special. Covered in cheese doesn’t make it good. The problem is they are overcharging and people are paying it. The prices are outrageous compared to other hole in the wall Mexican places. I get we need to raise prices - not that much.
Ordered one soft chicken taco to go. It was a good size, since I was expecting a street taco. The flavor was good, but the two tortillas that it was wrapped in, the outer one was hard...not sure if it was over cooked or old. The inner one was fine. I only ordered one so I am not sure if it was an anomaly. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say it wasn't old.
I was in the neighborhood, wanted to grab something to eat so thought I'd try Riveras since it had pretty good reviews and assumed their prices would be less than Taqueria Brand up the street. Ordered the asada fries and nachos to go and much to my dismay, they had the same price point. Even saw them microwaving the container with my nachos in it. 👀 I went to a friend's after, not even a quarter mile away, sat down to eat and my chips were already soggy. My nachos looked like a blob. Smothered with beans and cheese, TOO much cheese. Carne asada meat quality was poor and dry. Asada fries, same situation. We were disappointed. We've had Taqueria Brand numerous times; never soggy, better quality tasty meat, proportioned well. We tried something new but never again.
I got one chicken enchilada, and one beef enchilada. The chicken one tasted like it was just cooked in water and slapped into the food. The beef enchilada had a lot of flavor and it was very full. BUT the enchilada sauce tasted like the stuff they gave us in high school. I won’t say it was bland, but it was zesty and it wasn’t even red. But the cheese, I couldn’t even cut it w my utensil! Made me think of plastic cheese. They were super quick though! If you wanna grab them go, this is the place!
I was expecting really good food from the 4.7 star reviews and was disappointed. I ordered the Menudo and it lacked flavor and tasted watered down. It's very easy to cook and it needs to be properly cleaned (connective tissue) prior to cooking and it wasn't. I've yet to find a good Menudo at a restaurant. I'll stick to making it at home for now on.
Agree with Erika down below. I don’t get it. They seem to have their regulars who love it though. Everyone around me was buzzing how great it is as I waited 45 minutes to be seated. I tried the pozole and omg was the review of oregano water on point! No depth to the flavor. I also tried one of their taco combos and the taco was placed on top of the beans so the whole thing disintegrated into the bean sauce. The entire platter was very bland with a lack of zest, tang and any sort of kick. I left underwhelmed and completely unsatisfied. I didn’t finish anything and didn’t even bother taking it to go because I knew I wouldn’t want it.
My wife called to make an order and was placed on hold for a good while. Not even a hold button so you can hear what's going on. The young lady just ignores the phone. So I decide to call and instead of acknowledging the call, she picks up the phone and places it down and leaves me on. The food is great. Too bad the service isn't. I usually spend 80 or more. Not ordering here again.
Waiting 10 min no greeting to place an order to go 2 cook and servers saw me and didn’t even acknowledge me
I don’t know who’s writing all these positive reviews but I guarantee you 100% it’s people who have never had authentic Mexican food ! Pozole was the worst thing I have ever ate!!! it was water with oregano NO FLAVOR !!!! ZERO!!!! I should have known when I asked for a salsa to go with pozole and server brought me a tapatio bottle ! No salsa macha o de aceite NADA! Please let this be the review you read and helps u make up your mind NOT to waste your money on red oregano luke warm water with hominy and random pork pieces soup no espinazo o patita or carne maziza ! I spent $66 dollars on trash food and a cafe de Olla that’s 100% regular coffe with cinnamon added and non dairy trash creamers on the side ! This is truly one place I wish I never went and spend my hard earned money on ….
I literally sat here at the restaurant reading almost all the reviews. That's how long I've been waiting for food. Ordered a wet burrito and a torta. 20 minutes for that. I asked for a sample of the menudo and it smelled like it wasn't cleaned right. Im not sure if im at the same restaurant all these reviews were written about or they just haven't had true authentic Mexican food. I will say the presentation is nice to look at. Very disappointed..
