The Grain Cafe Long Beach Reviews
This place is so good for vegan food! Oh so yummy!!
Went here with a relative who is on FODMAP. The other two of us aren't veg*n, but the variety of food was amazing and the staff helped us find a dish my relative could eat without stomach trouble. Excellent, especially the pistachio cake! The cafe is clean and bright and intimate and the other clientele were so friendly we traded recommendations. We'll definitely be regulars!
This is not my first time eating food from The Grain Café. Thus far, in my life, The Grain Café is one of the best eateries. The customer service is always on point and the food is always on point. The Club Sandwich tastes really good. The potatoes taste really good. The entire meal travels well (after about forty minutes via Postmates). The Grain Café has a REALLY good developing menu. The outdoor eating area is decent though around/at a corner (I'm not crazy about eating areas near traffic/public areas because of the possibility of unfavorable fumes). The indoor eating area (when available) is decent and far more favorable to me than their outdoor eating area. As of my last in person visit, they are following Covid restrictions. I think The Grain Café is a go to eatery for anyone looking for a satisfying bite or drink.
This Oaxaca inspired menu is one of the best in my neighborhood of Long Beach. Great value and taste of all especially The Grain and the tamales when they are in season. Service is excellent especially Luis who is attentive and friendly every time we visit. It’s hard to believe that’s it’s Vegan as well.
The Grain Café is my go-to spot for delicious vegan food! The menu is huge, with tons of options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I especially love their chilaquiles and tofu scramble for breakfast, and their veggie crepes are amazing. The staff is always super friendly, and the outdoor seating is a great spot to hang out. They also have plenty of baked goods, with their carrot cake being a must-try. Parking can be tricky during busy times, but the food is totally worth it.
I’ve been to many vegan restaurant but this by far is the best, great food with a huge menu, clean facilities and very cool stuff (Macy she is a sweetheart very attentive to her customer , thank you), it is a must visit and the prices are reasonable too, only problem street parking...
There are a ton of Vegan and Vegetarian options these days but this is the place you gotta go. Their menu is extensive and delicious. They have everything from juice and smoothies to burritos and salads. My personal favorite has to be the Mole Burrito, the rich flavors around and inside that tortilla delight can't be beat. Chill spot for good food!
I winded up coming here twice during my weekend in Long Beach. A club sandwich the first visit, then a few tacos and a slice of cake a couple days later. All were great! Staff was nice too. This would definitely be a regular spot for me if I was a local.
This place is amazing. Everything on the menu is delicious, but our favorite is the chorizo and eggs. Just so we're clear, everything on the menu is plant based and out of this world. We had our first vegan Thanksgiving there this year and it was better than any meal that we can remember. All of us at infiniti marketing group love the grain cafe
It's really nice to have a dedicated vegan restaurant in the neighborhood. I'm not vegan, but I enjoy the food here. There's plenty of options and they do a good job preparing their dishes, so it's worth checking out. They're also open late, which is a nice option to have especially for a healthier choice.
Soo soo yummy and FILLING vegan food at incredibly reasonable prices! Sometimes I'll get tacos a la carte or a Cobb salad, but this day I got the waffle deluxe w tofu scramble. You can sub roasted potatoes for the hash browns. Also, I like the LB location better than the Redondo one because even though the menu is the same, LB has more flavor! 😋
I met up with a childhood friend here, and it was the perfect location. I looked for a place that had gluten-free and dairy free options, and The Grain Cafe didn't disappoint; they are all organic and vegan. I got the huevos a la Mexicana and gluten-free pancakes. It's safe to say I'll be back! Big bonus is that their menu has 4 items with nuts, so for a family that has life-threatening food allergies this is big for a vegan restaurant. Thank you for the first time experience!!
The food was amazingly authentic, fresh and so good. I would recommend this place to anyone.
Easy moving mid-range vegan cafe. I had a "maca" beverage with cat foam art which I really needed that touch today. Try the home made salsa, almost like a mole but medium heat. I had the huevos con chorizo pictured below-fresh and honest vegan eats. Street parking only. no dog except outside dining. Spent 22 bucks on good eats the vegan way!
Came her with the fam and they staff and food was incredible . The blueberry & pistachio cheese cake was even better . Had to left a $100 tip .
I got the Grain Salad~Marinated tempeh, black wild rice, quinoa, mixed greens, spelled berries, kale, carrots, and pumpkin seeds tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette. I loved it, it was fresh, filling, and flavorful. I paired it with some fresh green juice. Service was good, friendly staff. The desserts looked amazing, was too full to splurge. Had a taste of the torta, I loved it. Bought a bag of organic date seed powder to try later as a replacement for coffee ☕
It was our first time here. This was a while back before this whole quarantine. Man these are by far the best huevos rancheros I have tasted. Also the coffee I had was wonderful with a hint of cinnamon. They also added some cute character to it. My fiance had tofu scrambled eggs pancakes and sausage. Please continue to order and keep small business like this open.
Came here after my gym session to get a good vegan meal in and this place didn't disappoint! I got the chilaquiles and they were so good! The portion looked small but it was very filling. Environment was pretty chill and the servers were friendly. Parking here is not too bad, had to park down the street but not too far of a walk. Will definitely be back to try out more things from the menu when I'm in Long Beach again.
Love this place! Outdoor tables available, friendly staff, excellent food. This morning I had the Huevos ala Mexicana Breakfast, and my friend had pancake breakfast with tofu egg scramble. Tea, latte, fruit plate to complete. Every visit here has been most enjoyable! (The corn tortillas are amazing!)
Wow this place was so good I was a little nervous about having imitation chicken but you would have never known the difference the burrito that I had was extremely tasty the vegetables and seasoning was perfect and I have no complaints whatsoever if you're a vegan or thinking of becoming a vegan this has got to be the place for you to visit I highly recommend it and hope you give it a try and I truly believe just like me you will not be disappointed.
This is my new favorite vegan restaurant! My sister brought me here a week after they opened and i have to say that i was so surprised at the variety and options they offer. Friendly staff, fast service, and yummy food! I ordered the vegan chilaquiles and they were so flavorful. The bits of zuchini and mushrooms gave it auch a kick in flavor. The maca coffee is so good! Sweet and so creamy! To go i ordered their pineapple ginger lemonade. Hands down the most refreshing drink for a hot day. Will be back!
Cute spot. What stood out to me was the staff - they were very pleasant. The food was p good, but personally don’t feel it matches the current price point. That said, I would come here again for just the service alone. I was having a crappy day and the guy who took my order was so communicative & friendly. Thank you! 🌻
Visiting from out of town and randomly stopped by for brunch - what an amazing find! Amazing smoothies & homemade juices. We’re not vegan and it was still delicious. Great service too. Highly recommend
I got the grain salad, my spouse got the burger and both were delicious. We got a fruit crepe for dessert and loved that too. We will definitely be adding this to our list of places to go on the regular.
The Grain in Long Beach is a casual dining spot with wonderful vegan and vegetarian options. I usually eat breakfast here so will mainly comment on that. The food is made intentionally and I absolutely love their Tofu egg and pancakes! They have a Mexican-Oaxacan inspired cuisine that blends contemporary American food with more traditional staples. They also offer a nice selection of Vegan cakes by the slice and full cakes for pre-order. Luis is a wonderful server who is always welcoming with a warm smile. I am thankful for this location and will continue to frequent for breakfast and other meals!
Customer service was perfect! Both waiters were attentive and helpful in my food selection. The chilaquiles with red sauce was good with nice presentation. Their house hot sauce paired well with it. The caramel mocha was enjoyable. Good prices. This meal and coffee were $21.50 including tax.
This has become one of our favorite places to eat. The best part is that it's ALL VEGAN. A good variety of meals, from American to Italian and Asian to Mexican. Tonight we enjoyed the Sopes and Molotes from the Oaxaca menu. Along with dessert and cappuccino. The staff are always GREAT and make this a pleasant go to vegan cafe.
The food is delicious. The chicken tacos are so flavorful and the portion size was great. The beans and rice were very good and I loved the red salsa they brought to the table. The desserts we got were yummy and I got a caramel latte, the coffee had a really good flavor. We also got a dragon roll and my kiddo loved it. We will be back when we come to town. The only downside for me is the music is just a bit too loud but the atmosphere is great and the decorations were very cool.
Service was great! The servers were friendly and the food came out fast; we were only two and arrived at 11:30am on a Friday. The variety of food was delicious; we tried a waffle, veggie omelet, veggie crepe, and iced vanilla latte. For the amount we received the prices were good. Also, the cafe is pet friendly!
Love this place! I’ve come here many times over the years and have never been disappointed. Today I had the club sandwich, my friend had the wet red sauce burrito and I got a hot dog to-go for my hubby. I love that all their ingredients are homemade instead of beyond or impossible meat. I had my club sandwich with potatoes which were so well made and not greasy, but simple and flavorful. My friend and I shared a slice of lemon cake which was also tasty. I feel good and nourished after eating at The Grain Cafe!!
From the first moment I visited this establishment I have been impressed. The atmosphere is cozy, accessible and has a very welcoming host of hospitality professionals. The entire experience has an “at home” feel. Eight steps in I was welcomed by a display of crafted pastries fit for a fairy tale. I was skeptical but intrigued by it all. My order(s)… each time I’ve ordered, were filled with balance, flavor and care. I have yet to be disappointed with “The Grain’s” culinary mastery of vegan cuisine. Top notch establishment and I highly. recommend.
Quite cute, rusty place. Stopped by for a cup of mocha and a cake. Parking can be tough since it’s street parking only. Service is nice and friendly. The cake was great and tasty and moist and coffee is good. The decor, for me, dark and rustic feeling and they have a waterfall wall so it’s relaxing. The place is right on the corner of 4th Street & Ximeno Ave so you got the corner view of both streets. They do have indoor and outdoor seating for all seasons. They do have other plain base foods but we’re here in the morning so couldn’t able to try the foods yet but my friends said that it was great with reasonable price too. Will definitely come back and try them out.
I have ordered food for delivery many times. The Grain Cafe is my most reliable eatery in Long Beach. They are very accommodating and remove ingredients I cannot eat. This food is the best flavorful plant-based for in the area. The menu has lots of variety and the desserts are everything. Lemon cake, chocolate, and carrot are my three faves. My entreé ks always the spinach crepe and the sushi rolls. So good!
Had lunch here while visiting Long Beach for the day. The exterior is not very inviting but what waits inside was an incredible surprise. Some truly terrific vegan Mexican food. My guest had a fajita burrito with vegan chicken and green sauce. I had burrito with Tempeh and red sauce. The plates arrived with very generous portions and arranged on the plate like a work of culinary art. I knew then that this was going to be something special and it was. So delicious! I couldn't finish it all and I don't normally get a box to take food home. This time I did, it made a great dinner tonight. There was a case filled with tasty looking desserts. We got 3 to go, a brownie, carrot cake, and a Coconut cake. They where all incredible. I can't wait to eat here again. The service was excellent too. This place is truly a rare find and I have added it to my list of favorite vegan restaurants, I think it just became #1.
Oh I love this spot!! It’s the first time I’ve been here and my aunt lives across the street. I am not much of a vegan food type of person because I love my meats and real cheeses and eggs, but this place was AMAZING! Don’t let the outside fool you. There are so many options here and you will not be disappointed. Isidro was the best as providing recommendations. He also gave us a taste of their famous lentil soup, which tasted like grandma’s recipe. It was really tasty, but we had already ordered way too much! We had the homemade hummus plate with fresh veggies, an avocado salad (the most beautiful!), and the hummus and avocado veggie spinach wrap. I really loved my wrap! It made me smile eating it, which is what food should do. I also loved knowing that what I was putting in my body was healthy and not processed. Oh, I also ordered a freshly made juice - I chose beets/apple/orange/carrots. You can choose up to four ingredients from their various fruits and veggies. I can’t wait to come back!
Been passing by this place for months, always interested, and FINALLY visited! And I wish I visited sooner! The food is great and the staff are very friendly! I highly recommend it! They had a moringa latte as well. Which I've never come across before. Tasted like a diluted matcha. But moringa has much more health benefits 💚 loved the cute large art too lol.
I enjoyed this place, I met up with family for a bite to eat and they had so many yummy vegan dishes, it was hard to choose! The location is a small dining area but just enough for a cozy vibe with a small group, music playing and the aroma of delicious food cooking in the kitchen. Our server was great, she explained some dishes to help us make a decision and the food came quick and we were beyond ready. I chose a Reuben sandwich, very tasty mix of sauer kraut and tempeh which honestly I normally wouldn't like but here, at this place it was seasoned to perfection. I washed this yummy sandwich down with a mint lemonade... again... yummy hits the tastebuds with a refreshing cool splash of mint and lemons - a great combination. I saw a almond strawberry cake on the menu and although I was too full to eat it there, I put that bad boy in a to go box and was a happy camper! The location was kind enough to allow us to sit for hours and catch up with each other, I live this place and their food!
AMAZING experience. This was so refreshing - If I had one of these by me they'd have all my money. I got a latte with coconut milk, nachos, a club sandwich with potatoes, and finished off with a green tea cake. They served some kind of homemade hot sauce that was so good. They are very allergy friendly I noticed too. Whether you're allergic to nuts, or gluten free, etc, they have options for you and are very inclusive with that. The menu is a great size too. Everything was 10/10. This is real food.
I had the chilaquiles. Amazing ❤️ as always. I get extra of the homemade spicy 🌶 salsa and bought a couple of bottles for the house. The wife had the English muffin with all the fixens. I had a bite and it was 😋 delicious. The kids had pancakes 🥞 & waffles 🧇. They really enjoyed it. We did the outdoor seating. Great vegan spot.
Really good food, fun service and decent prices. We had a green wrap and a pita. Both could have had a little more of the "chicken", but the flavors are great. The collection of flavors in the pita had a bright, crisp quality. I would definitely have it again, but there are so many tasty looking options on the menu. We didn't have desert, but the bakery case looks fantastic. We sat inside, but they do have outdoor seating. One small frustrating challenge, there was a metro bus that sat next to the building for an extended period and because the door kept opening for new customers and for staff to serve the outdoor tables the noisey, rattly bus made conversation inside difficult. I should mention that i am old and don't hear well anyway so others may not notice. Still planning a return visit soon and hope to save room for dessert this time.
Really lived the atmosphere, convenience, and endless array of vegan choices. Dinner meets casual zen restaurant with an authentic vibe. My only let down was the cheese seletion and omelette. I added cheese to my veggie omelette and out came shredded cold mozzarella on a tofu scramble mixed with some veggies in the shape of an omelette. Very misleading and incorrectly named. Otherwise everything else was spot on. Breakfast ALL DAY!
Great food with a unique twist! The flavors were bold and well-balanced, making each dish a delight. Service was friendly but a bit slow during peak hours. Overall, a solid choice for a fun dining experience!
Vegan Crepes are such a rare find! The texture of the crepe was thick and impressive with an overwhelming amount of fruit. 10/10 No complaints. The hot dog was housemaid so it didn't look like a hot dog...but it tasted good so I give it a 9/10. The Jamaica drink tasted pure and delicious. Excited to go back and try more options, the menu is huge.
Firstly, for a vegan restaurant the food was actually pretty good. I don't usually go to vegan restaurants, and I assumed they would serve me some kind of leaf or mushrooms, but no. I got the club sandwich and it was pretty solid. They used some kind of fake bacon and chicken, and it wasn't bad. My wife got the black bean burger deluxe and she loved it. She's also part vegan so don't take her word for it, because she actually enjoys healthy food. Anyway, the service was great. The lady was super nice, these are some things she did: Turned on heater for us sitting outside, she even placed a napkin on a wobbly table for us, she gave us water for the dogs, etc. She was extremely friendly. Atmosphere was cool, we sat outside and they turned the heater on for us. I also loved watching the people go by outside. I would come back if my wife was with me because she's cool and vegan, but by myself --- no!
What I loved about this place was they are vegan and used sustainable products like no plastic straws but compostable ones and silverware, so no plastic there too. We ordered a customized juice, which was good. Ordered a pancake for the kid (no complaints), Huevos Rancheros and Tofu scramble. The portion sizes were very small for the prices, hardly filled our stomachs! The food was spread out in such a way to look as if they filled the plates, but the quantity was too little in reality!
This was our first vegan meal. We decided to give it a try in an overall effort for our family of three (all adults) to improve our health and maybe lose a few pounds. First impression - the gentleman who helped us was excellent. Friendly and knowledgeable. The food was OK. We are used to dishes that are full of flavor (my wife was born and raised in Mexico and is an AMAZING and enthusiastic cook). We all decided on breakfast for dinner. My daughter had the breakfast burrito, I had pancakes with tofu eggs and tofu sausage, and my wife ordered a fajita dish with imitation chicken. The pancakes were good, if a bit overdone. My eggs needed ketchup, the burrito did too, plus some kind of hot sauce. The fajitas sauce was delicious, but the "chicken" was not a good copy of the real thing. Oh - the decaf coffee I ordered was very good.
Not a good brunch spot. Maybe better for lunch or dinner? I ordered the veggie omelette. They gave me a tofu veggie scramble. How do you not know how to make a vegan omelette? Or why would you call it an omelette when it's not? First of all, there was no daiya or vegan cheese on the scramble "omelette". The spinach was overcooked. The bell peppers were sliced too thin and the tofu was scrambled to bits. Didn't have a good texture. The potatoes were overcooked and hard to chew. I could not eat much of it. My man friend got the veggie scramble. Our dishes looked the same, except his dish came with tempeh "bacon" and sweet potato cubes. The sweet potato cubes were too mushy. They get 3 stars for effort and for using sliced avocado on the "omelette."
Incredibly welcome addition to the neighborhood. Would give it five stars but the decor has a early 90s vibe-- like an Orange County strip mall restaurant-- and the music can be bad. Update, 11/2019: I think its portions are shrinking, at least for the breakfast burrito. Update 11/2021: food feels ok not amazing, dropped from 4 to 3 stars. This "omelet" was ok, for instance, but was not very omelet like and was more like stir fried peppers sprinkled with small amounts of tofu bits. (See photo)
OK vegan in Long Beach We had an just ok meal here. The extensive menu sounded great and it was hard to choose. The Pizza was overcooked and dry. The Patty Crepe looked great but was bland. The Tofu scramble was good. Even the vegan cake was only fair. Wanted to show more love but didn't really dig it ... we did spend 2 weeks in Greater LA eating exclusively at vegan places so maybe we were just spoiled. Pros: vegan, big menu Cons: pizza way over-cooked, generally bland
Always excited to find a "mostly" organic and vegan restaurant. My biggest complaint is they use canola oil in some of there products. Not a big deal to most but when you eat mostly organic and healthy its a negative thing to see. Pozole was rich and delicious. Chilaquiles was pretty good as well but lots they unfortunately gave me a lot of black avocado. Lots of gluten free options.
So disappointed in my order from this place today! Ordered 2 breakfast burritos to-go and the order came out to nearly $29. I'm happy to pay that for decent portions of healthy and fresh vegan food. However, my husband and I were totally shocked to find that when we opened our orders there were only 12 pieces of potatoes in our meals. We thought there had to be a mistake so I called them and asked if this was normal. The gal said yes, the side of potatoes in very small. I feel ripped off considering the price!
To say I'm dissapointed is an understatement...when I got there I wasn't greeted by anyone, had to even go to the front to get a menu on my own. Went to one table, the surface was sticky, so went to another table and was still sticky?? Not sure what the coating is on the tables..but weird that its sticky like your arms are resting on dried soda. I ordered nachos, mole burrito, sausage pizza and carrot cake.. all that got rave reviews online... Nacho chips were stale and chewy and all the toppins were bland, not tastey at all..not sure how old those chips are..(just go the store to buy chips and guacamole, will be a much better experience..) The mole burrito had some weird, gross tasting brown barbeque looking sauce poured on top, so you couldn't even hold it in your hand. On the side they gave you some poorly seasoned black beans and mexican style rice, no flavor, even salsa provided wasn't good. Also the burrito was filled with probably 80% fried bell peppers, so if you like bell peppers get it? Probably the worst burrito I ever had, bell peppers completely took over, couldnt really determine any other flavor but that? Completely the opposite of the reviews I saw saying it was bomb...it was lame, I would feel bad even giving it to a homeless guy. Then the sausage pizza had wayyyy too much cheese, tomato sauce on it was ok, but the "meat" had a weird texture/flavor, even the dough wasn't good.. overall gross.. also came with some bland potato cubes on the side, seriously anyone can do better at home..(by the way, they use daiya cheese, which last time I checked isnt organic or "natural" like they claim.. why are you lying to customers? What else is "non organic" that you serve? Just be honest) Last I had the carrot cake, because how can you mess up a carrot cake right??? But no...they managed to do even that...wayyyy too sweet, too much frosting..even after scraping the frosting off, was still too sweet. Couldn't enjoy it because the sugar overload, plus they put some vegan whip cream on the side...not sure what its made of, but it wasnt good either. Oh, did I mentioned the lady who brought 3 kids inside that were screaming the whole time? Yep, was the icing on the cake, staff didn't even consider addressing it, guess that's normal there? Really had high hopes for this place after reading all the positive reviews...but sorry, overall the food was terrible. Also very expensive, everything was $70 bucks. Still left a tip for the waittress because she was nice enough..but the food was a horrible disappointment, straight up gross and overpriced. If you like vegan food, go to Native Foods (bomb nachos by the way #nostalechewychips) or Nice Burger instead. Never been disappointed at either place and ambiance and vibe are much better. Not sure what people were smoking before they wrote positive reviews for this place, but I wont be returning here, save your money and go somewhere else that doesn't want to make you throw up🤮
Edit 2025: I used to love their strawberry almond cake from here years ago but my husband recently bought a slice and it was not fresh, the frosting was completely different and very dry. This place is not the same. I've tried different foods from here. A must would be the waffle with fruit and the strawberry cake. Everything else is just ok. Don't come here if you have a big appetite because you won't be filled. This time I tried the veggie wrap with bacon and it was different. I was expecting the tofurky tempeh bacon which is delicious but I didn't like the tempeh bacon from here. The seasoning of it is not great in my opinion. I'm sure it would have tasted better without the tempeh bacon. I also added ketchup and it tasted much better. They should come up with their own sauce for the wrap. The chicken crepe is ok. Couldn't taste the garlic aioli. Definitely opt for the salad instead of the potatoes.
My husband and I have never been disappointed with the Grain Cafe before (we go to the LA location) so we were excited to see another location in Long Beach when we were visiting today. First, the first table we sat at was very sticky for some reason (like the whole surface of the table actually). We then moved and I noticed the waitress helping another couple that came in after us. We ordered some guacamole and chips that had a black hair coming out of it after 2 bites in (my husband and I gave colorful hair so it's not ours) and that turned into a situation because we tried to call the waitress over and kept helping other tables instead of us! Eventually, she came and said the entrees weren't ready yet so I guess she assumed we were just being impatient. That was when we showed her the guacamole hair. She took the guac and brought us a new one eventually but she brought it along with the main meals. Then came pizza situation, I had ordered my pizza with a side of potatoes but I received a salad instead and the hot pizza was plopped on top of the cold salad that had dressing in it! We were not refunded for the guacamole or offered anything to compensate really. We will not be returning, this was a very disappointing experience.
