Walking into Sweetfin’s Downtown-LA outpost (735 W 7th Street), you feel the hum of the city around you — the clack of shoes on concrete, the hurried stride of office workers, the scent of asphalt and ambition. Amid that urban rush, Sweetfin offers a pocket of calm: a fast-casual poke bowl joint where simplicity, freshness, and flavor meet. Sitting down with my bowl, I was immediately struck by the color — the lush green kale or herbs, the bright threads of shredded carrot, the clean white of bean sprouts, and flecks of fresh fish or protein peeking through. There’s a sense of abundance and balance rather than heaviness. The Bowl — What’s Working • Freshness & texture: The crunch of bean sprouts and leafy greens plays in harmony with the soft rice (or whatever base you choose) and tender fish/chicken/tofu. The bowl in the photo delivered a clean, crisp bite — nothing weighed down by heavy sauces or soggy toppings. Every forkful felt alive. • Flavor balance: Sweetfin doesn’t rely on globs of creamy or overly sweet sauce to carry the dish. Instead, sauces seem thoughtfully applied — enough to complement, not overpower. The toppings (herbs, maybe cilantro or parsley; possibly fried onions or garlic for crunch; scattered microgreens) add aromatic lifts and complexity. Customizability: As with all their bowls, you can go from a straightforward salmon poke over rice to a fully customized medley of proteins, veggies, bases, and sauces. For someone who doesn’t want the same bowl every time, or has dietary preferences (vegetarian/vegan, gluten-free), that flexibility is a huge plus. • Light but satisfying: A bowl from Sweetfin feels nourishing without being heavy. It’s the kind of meal that refuels without bogging you down — ideal for a busy downtown lunch, a pre-event dinner, or a post-gym bite. In short: this isn’t your overly drenched take-out bowl. It’s thoughtful, balanced, and — dare I say — slightly elegant for fast-casual fare. To truly appreciate Sweetfin is to understand what it represents in L.A.’s evolving food scene. • Pioneering poke in SoCal: Sweetfin (originally Sweetfin Poké) was founded by Alan Nathan, Brett Nestadt, and Seth Cohen in 2013 — though their first store opened in Santa Monica in April 2015. Since then, they’ve grown to dozens of locations across Southern California (Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego). •Pole to Bowl” & sustainability: Sweetfin isn’t just about convenience — they take sourcing seriously. Their menu is 100% gluten-free, and they emphasize sustainable fish and produce. Sauces, bases, and toppings are made in-house daily. For a city that moves fast, Sweetfin offers something purer and more mindful. Chef-driven, California-inspired vision: Their culinary direction — often led by chefs such as Dakota Weiss — mixes traditional poke roots with Californian creativity, and often draws on Japanese and Korean flavors. This translates to bowls that don’t just feel Hawaiian — they feel like L.A. Cultural impact: Sweetfin is widely regarded as a pioneer that turned poke from a niche Hawaiian dish into a mainstream, nationwide phenomenon. Many of the poke-bowl restaurants that followed in the U.S. trace part of their inspiration back to Sweetfin’s early success. Growing footprint & evolution: Over the years, Sweetfin has expanded across the Southland and even attracted investment from abroad (Poke House, a Europe-based fast-casual poke brand, became a major investor to accelerate Sweetfin’s U.S. expansion). They’ve also experimented with delivery/ghost-kitchens, digital ordering, loyalty programs — blending L.A. convenience with gourmet sensibility. In many ways, the bowl on your table is the final expression of that journey — a fusion of sustainability, Californian freshness, and fast-casual convenience.

I love the food—it’s always so yummy! I’ve ordered many times and tried a variety of dishes, from the build-your-own options to the set menu, and everything has been consistently fresh and delicious. The staff is always so friendly and welcoming too. Definitely a 10/10!

Love this poke place. My fav @ DTLA. Best part, they have cauliflower rice. Their protein sizes are decent for the price. Also, great selection of add ones, sauces and bases. It’s gets real busy during lunch time, I try to go there after 12:45pm or 11:30am. Must try!

Covid19 Compliant. NO Dine-In. Takeout & Delivery [via Mealpal] Only. My first time here. The place was clean. I had a small simple poke bowl. It was filling. It was fresh and tasty. It was a nice healthy alternative. I will definitely be coming back again. Also, they have Sweetfan rewards for members. Check them out.

Great portion sizes for fresh fish, fresh vegetables and rice/noodles. Prices are also decent too. The lady serving was so sweet and very helpful!

Easy to customize, friendly staff, great free cucumber water, fresh ingredients, fast, very air-conditioned (too much!?), and prices just a little bit too expensive (which is better than most restaurants lol). Overall, one of the best food chains you could go for a meal imo!

Parking sucked but the food excellent! The taro Chios were to due for. I thoroughly enjoyed the wasabi seaweed they were flavored with. The place can be pricy, but you can find specials on UberEats for some credit. I had the BYOB poke, which was perfect. ALWAYS PAY FOR TRUFDLE SAUCE AND MUSHROOMS 😋😋😋

Nice poke chain, makes for a good alternative in DTLA. The service was polite, helpful, and friendly. Loved having a brown rice option which is not always available. The restaurant is clean with modern sparce appointments. Quick lunch tip: they have an app which is a great option for ordering ahead if you work in the area where the lunch rush can be trying. Enjoy!

I had the large Spicy tuna bowl with fried garlic added and my fiancé had the large gochujang salmon bowl. Bothe were delicious and there were a large variety of additional topping options. With that said, it was pricey for the size of the bowl. I received a delivery promo that put this restaurant on our radar, so I would have been more disappointed had we paid full price. Especially compared to our normal local options where the same price is closer to double the food.

The guy who helped me was great. Very friendly and efficient. The food was bad. The sesame oil tasted rancid, and the fish was not fresh. Two of the pieces had a very fishy taste. Will not go back to this location, otherwise I might be playing Russian roulette

Overall was decent but my bowl was ruined by this mysterious hard object almost breaking one of my teeth. I have no idea what this is but could've really caused some damage. Won't be coming back again.

I decided to check out Sweetfin after hearing good reviews. Ordered one of the signature bowls: Gochujang Salmon. To be honest, this is so disappointing. My bowl is barely full. I ordered a small but this looks like a kids portion. Barely any protein, rice or kelp noodles slaw. What's worse is the lack of flavor. Gochujang is supposed to be spicy and sweet. But all I taste is bland veggies and sesame seeds. Service was fast but I also think that's part of their issue. This is not worth $13 dollars. I suggest you go elsewhere.

the service was good, atmosphere was clean, the food is inedible and the price is ridiculous for this portion size.

They hide everything (the food) and make you order first so that they can take your money for a large bowl and give you the portions of a small one. I asked them to double my veggie portions, they told me they did but no they didn’t. Very small portions of the seafood too. I asked for more veggies and they told me no. They are very rude. $16 for this? I’ll keep going to poke bar instead.

Just finished eating about 1 hour ago and both my husband and I are experiencing food poisoning. Not fun in the hotel room and can’t go out anywhere our first time to downtown LA. Both ordered the yellowfin and albacore with various different toppings. Tried calling the store and couldn’t get connected to anyone to tell them to stop serving the raw fish. First time ever getting food poisoning from poke or sushi.

Myself and other person got food poisoning from this location! We ordered the Yuzu Salmon and the Truffle Yuzu Albacore, both had small portions with uncooked rice (boarder line inedible) . The fish was bland and stinky. Highly don’t recommend!

I didn't find the food to be overly that great. A lot of it is flavorless and unseasoned. The opposite of what Poké should be. Literally EVERYTHING I ordered was flavorless. Worst Poké spot I've eaten at thus far. Also, the taro chips? Horrible! They have a very hard, stale consistency and again, almost no flavor whatsoever. I also tried the BBQ flavored ones since a bag came free with my purchase if I spent at least $25. Those weren't any better. Just BBQ-flavored staleness. Wouldn't eat again. I got the Customized Sweetbox, and there was literally nothing to write home about. Had to pretty much add my own seasonings and drown everything in Ponzu sauce to make it even remotely edible. The only thing I can give any credit for is the way they packaged the order; it was very well-done. But the food itself was just not very tasty. Felt like a waste of money. 1/10 wouldn't order here again.
