Casa Benigna Madrid Reviews
HOME AWAY FROM HOME! This is not just a restaurant—it’s an experience. I was in Madrid for just one day and stumbled upon this place at the last minute. Without a reservation, I decided to take my chances and do a walk in. To my surprise and delight, the woman who greeted us was nothing short of heaven-sent. She went above and beyond, not only welcoming us in but also seating us at their best table: a private room tucked away at the back, accessible through the kitchen—offering a charming behind-the-scenes look. The chefs we passed along the way were all smiles, and it truly warmed my heart. From the way they interacted, it was clear they’re treated like family, not just staff. As someone who doesn’t drink alcohol, I didn’t want to miss out on the classic tinto de verano. Once again, they accommodated without hesitation, making a light and refreshing version just for me. And then came the star of the show: the paella. We ordered the arroz con costilla, their house specialty, and it was absolutely phenomenal. Without exaggeration, it was the BEST paella I’ve ever had—rich in flavor, perfectly crispy, and cooked with clear care. A squeeze of lemon and a bit of their homemade aioli took it to the next level. Gracias por hacer mi visita a Madrid memorable! Desde México y RD para el mundo.
We chose this restaurant Casa Benigna for a very special occasion, meeting for the first time the parents and brother of our daughter’s boyfriend and it was a fantastic experience. The rice dishes are a culinary masterpiece cooked on a special copper pan for a crisp and delicious rice, and we selected the black ink and a second batch of rice with ribs. The decor is elegant and eclectic with philosophical sayings by the founder Norberto who started this establishment 35 years ago, now run by his son Lars and wife Celia. If you’re a large group they have a “secret” private room in the back that you access passing through the kitchen. A must meal if you’re in Madrid, you will thank me…
An absolute gem in Madrid. Casa Benigna offers one of the most authentic and heartwarming dining experiences I’ve had in Spain. The food is exceptional – you can truly taste the care and tradition in every bite. My absolute favourite was the black rice with alioli. It was rich, perfectly cooked, and full of deep flavour, with the alioli adding just the right touch of creaminess and balance. Truly unforgettable. Their signature paella, cooked in the traditional patella, was also outstanding. Every dish felt thoughtful and full of soul. The service was warm and personal, with a team that made us feel genuinely welcome. It’s clear they love what they do and want every guest to leave happy. The setting is elegant yet relaxed, with a cosy charm that makes you feel right at home. It’s the kind of place where you slow down, enjoy the moment, and savour every bite. Casa Benigna is more than just a meal – it’s an experience. I’ll absolutely be coming back and highly recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Spanish cuisine made with heart.
An extraordinary gastronomic experience! We booked this restaurant 6 weeks in advance on a friend’s personal recommendation. To say it met our expectations is an understatement! Our taxi dropped us off beside an inconspicuous wooden door beneath the sign Casa Benigna in modest surrounds. We found the door locked and thankfully noticed the large brass door knocker which you were expected to use to get the attention of your host! Once inside we were enchanted by the decor and were greeted by non other than the owner of the restaurant Lars. He loved telling us the story of his restaurant which was founded in 1990 by his father - Norberto and now owned by him. He talked us through the menu and made brilliant recommendations which we absolutely devoured!! The hot smoked salmon brought fresh from Norway and smoked in house and the eggplant with duck confit were both divine. The smoked salmon was the best I’ve ever had an just melted in your mouth. The paella is the highlight of this restaurant as the family hailed from a little village near Valencia. We just had to try at least two. The chicken and vegetable paella was beautiful to look at and burst with flavour. The Iberian pork paella is a house classic which we loved also. Although this was all very filling and we just couldn’t make room for dessert the owner treated us to a little thin crispy wafer made from nuts and a small pot of decadent chocolate sauce which we couldn’t refuse. An experience I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Madrid. Book ahead!
Casa Benigna delivers an exceptional Spanish dining experience that showcases both traditional preparations and outstanding hospitality. The excellent jamón bellota slices, paired with their homemade butter and bread, create a perfect appetizer that sets the tone for quality throughout the meal. The premium ham's nutty, rich flavors complement the fresh bread and creamy butter beautifully. The highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the tomato sauce noodles with sliced lobster - so delicious that you could smell the aromatic tomato sauce before it was even mixed into the pasta. This dish was definitely my favorite, combining the sweetness of fresh lobster with a vibrant, fragrant tomato base that created an unforgettable flavor combination. The paella de costilla ibérica (paella of pork ribs) was equally delicious, featuring the coveted crispy rice bottom that paella enthusiasts seek, paired with tender pork ribs that provided a lovely crunch in every bite. The balance of textures and the depth of flavor demonstrated masterful paella technique. The paella of rabbit and snails offered an interesting flavor profile that represents traditional Spanish countryside cuisine, though this combination is admittedly not for everyone. The preparation was authentic and well-executed for those seeking genuine regional specialties. The strawberry sorbet served as an amazing palate cleanser and dessert ending for the evening, providing a refreshing, clean finish that perfectly concluded the rich, savory meal. A special shout out to the Filipino kitchen and waitstaff crew who were very attentive and enthusiastic throughout the evening. Their dedication to excellent service and genuine warmth significantly enhanced the dining experience. Would I eat there again? Probably not. Reservations take a long time to book, and while the food is good, it's not worth coming back for given the hassle of securing a table and the abundance of other excellent dining options in Madrid. Casa Benigna successfully combines authentic Spanish cuisine with exceptional service, but the difficulty in booking and the lack of truly memorable dishes that would justify repeat visits make it more of a one-time experience than a regular dining destination.
Just had one of the next meals in Madrid. Came here for lunch alone and it was all local diners. The owner and his daughter introduced themselves and gave my his recommendations and the history of the restaurant. The aubergine was amazing. I got the pork paella and it was the rice was so crispy!! At the end of meal, then even gave me sweet note and comped my meal. Can't recommend this place enough!
We began with a variety of appetizers, each thoughtfully prepared, with the jamón being particularly exquisite. The paella, cooked in their signature patella pan, was outstanding, featuring a flavorful socarrat that showcased the chef's dedication to perfecting rice dishes. Desserts were equally impressive, rounding off a proper dinner. The service was warm and attentive, making us feel like honored guests. The cozy, home-like atmosphere added to the charm. Highly recommended for those seeking authentic Spanish cuisine in Madrid.
Small and eclectic restaurant in Madrid that serves some of the best rice dishes in their own patented metal plate. The menu is short (5 starters and 7 main courses all rice or pasta) but all items are a must try. The house smoked salmon excels, served warm with an ultra crispy skin. All rice types are flavourful and cooked to perfection with a bit of socarrat (burnt rice). The service is very professional, attentive and friendly.
This place nails both style and substance. The decor is quite unique (with clothes and else hanging from the roof and other details which make the place cozy) and the device very welcoming. The paella was one of the best I’ve had—perfectly cooked rice but also the possibility to take several types of paella to share among us. The smoked salmon was incredible too, with a depth of flavor that makes sense once you learn the owner has Norwegian roots (or at least that’s what I understood). A spot that feels special without trying too hard—definitely worth a visit!
I have lived in Barcelona and traveled extensively throughout Spain, believe me when I say that this is THE MOST EXQUISITE Paella I have tasted! The service is outstanding and the food is incredibly delicious. I don’t like cooked salmon but I devoured this one, enjoying each bite! MOST VISIT!
Lovely experience; very friendly staff and absolutely delicious food. The smoked salmon is a house specialty and it was quite possibly the best bite of salmon I’ve ever had. The pasta and paellas we ordered were flavorful, unique and well prepared. This place is a must if you’re ever in Madrid. Chef Norberto even took the time to give us recommendations in other cities in Spain. (There would be better pictures but the food was so delicious we ate it too quickly!)
Favorite meal in Madrid This was my favorite meal in Madrid! The food was phenomenal. My 10-year old said the paella was the best thing he had ever eaten :) amazing services out server was Vangie she was excellent. In general everybody was so nice. The owner explained all dishes before server it.
This dining experience makes me emotional, the place and the staff makes me feel like I am at home, and it was the best experience that I had when I visited Madrid as a tourist. I came across this restaurant when I was nearby wandering around the city, I didn't make any reservation as I didn't know the restaurant is so popular and didn't think too much. I knocked the door and the manager opened the door for me, and managed to arranged a table for me at 3:30pm ( I really appreciate her effort to fed the hungry me as I was just randomly checking). I went back after an hour, and they have set the table, as a tourist I really asked a lot of questions about the food, and they were patient. I ordered one-person size baked aubergine with duck confit and seafood paella. I love how they serve the butter with a bucket, it is special. While I was waiting for my food, I checked the decoration, it is very chic and it gives a cozy family vibe, which I really love. Dishes: 1. Baked aubergine with duck confit: the duck was so crispy! the aubergine was tender and had such a harmony with the sauce, I personally don't like aubergine AT ALL (hahah I know but because of the recommendation I decided to give a try, and it was beyond my expectation), it is so good and I love how they combine the ingredients with everything. 2. Seafood paella: as a Chinese, our rice usually is soft and it is my first time to try paella. I was shocked by how crispy and chewy the rice was! and it was well seasoned, the crispy rice under gives a different flavour and texture( crunchy rice crust is my favourite and it sometimes at the bottom of the cooking pot when we cook the rice) the dry texture added extra flavour. the service was good and they really took good care of the table with the right amount of attention. when I asked for bills, they delivered me a note and I immediately got teared up after read it (uploaded in the picture). they could have just rejected me from not making a reservation but they didn't, instead they made the best effort to provide the best service to me - a random tourist that might even never visit Madrid again. It was the warmest and best memory that I had for this trip, I just want to say thank you again to all the staff in the restaurant. thank you Casa Benigna, I will definitely come back with my family and friends in May, thank you so much for making the best memory for my trip, hope to see you guys very very soon, and this time I won't forget to make a reservation :)

This restaurant was out of this world. The food, the service, the atmosphere, and the owner—Lars—made for an incredible dinner and evening. A must in Madrid.

The place is small and intimate. The staffs were friendly but one staff kept asking to clear up our plate 😵💫 The plates looked a bit stained eventhough it was clean. Maybe because of its age. The paella is okay but we thought it was quiete pricey considering they put limited amount of the protein. For example the rabbit is chopped to tiny bits. The bread was a bit hard and not warm.. the butter taste good. And €5 per person is a bit too much compared to the other resto in Madrid. The eggplant was the best meal we tried that night. Friendly host/owner and nice decoration / atmosphere.

EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE for a small, undercooked, oily portion of paella with barely any protein. Our waiter was attentive but the service was again not reflective of the abnormally high price (€150 for three paellas, an appetizer, and a lemonade). It's also written inconspicuously in fine print on the menu that the bread (which I thought was complimentary) is €5 / person, which the staff told us nothing about. DO NOT be fooled by the high review count and (at the time of writing this) 4.7/5 stars... the other reviews mention a change in ownership that lead to the quality "plummeting" over the last few years. The smoked salmon appetizer was good but be prepared for it to be very smoky and quite oily. As an indian I can confidently say that you are better off eating some biryani than this "paella" 😂. I am surprised they are completely booked for the next three weekends for something of this poor quality and high price. I assume other people are buying into the bandwagon/historically good reviews that aren't applicable for the quality you'd experience today.
